Static-Dynamic Fluorescence Patterns Based on Photodynamic Disulfide Reactions for Versatile Information Storage

Convolution Neural Network-Assisted Smart Fluorescent-Tongue Based on Lanthanide Ion-Induced Forming MOF/HOF Composite for Differentiation of Flavor Compounds and Wine Identification

Wine flavor is a vital quality characteristic in wine, influenced by those flavor components with low sensory thresholds. It is crucial to recognize and classify the wine components related to their flavor contribution. The integration of fluorescent sensors and artificial intelligence shows huge potential in flavor recognition by emulation of the gustatory perception system. Meanwhile, achieving information identification of wine based on multiple information barcodes has hopeful applications in anticounterfeiting. In this study, we present a simple method in which organic linkers are weaved into a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) for the available transformation of a metal-bonded organic framework (MOF) induced by lanthanide ions (Ln3+). The fluorescent Ln-MOF/HOF composite exhibits high sensitivity, rapid response, and good recyclability for detecting seven flavor compounds in wine, including tannic acid, ionone, vanillin, anethole, anisaldehyde, hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxy-2-methylacetophenone. Depending on its satisfactory detectability, a novel strategy is provided in which a fluorescent sensor is able to function as a smart fluorescent-tongue (F-tongue) by the aid of convolutional neural network to differentiate these seven flavor compounds. In addition, the Ln-MOF/HOF composite has been used to prepare multiple information barcodes for wine information identification on the basis of dynamic fluorescence response toward tannic acid. The mimetic gustatory perception system developed in this study may offer a promising strategy for flavor recognition in food and further food anticounterfeiting.

Smart Triboelectric Nanogenerators Based on Stimulus-Response Materials: From Intelligent Applications to Self-Powered Systems

Smart responsive materials can react to external stimuli via a reversible mechanism and can be directly combined with a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to deliver various intelligent applications, such as sensors, actuators, robots, artificial muscles, and controlled drug delivery. Not only that, mechanical energy in the reversible response of innovative materials can be scavenged and transformed into decipherable electrical signals. Because of the high dependence of amplitude and frequency on environmental stimuli, self-powered intelligent systems may be thus built and present an immediate response to stress, electrical current, temperature, magnetic field, or even chemical compounds. This review summarizes the recent research progress of smart TENGs based on stimulus-response materials. After briefly introducing the working principle of TENG, we discuss the implementation of smart materials in TENGs with a classification of several sub-groups: shape-memory alloy, piezoelectric materials, magneto-rheological, and electro-rheological materials. While we focus on their design strategy and function collaboration, applications in robots, clinical treatment, and sensors are described in detail to show the versatility and promising future of smart TNEGs. In the end, challenges and outlooks in this field are highlighted, with an aim to promote the integration of varied advanced intelligent technologies into compact, diverse functional packages in a self-powered mode.

Dynamic Fluorescent Patterning Based on Visible-Light-Responsive Diselenide Metathesis

A diselenide bond, as a dynamic covalent bond, is a versatile tool to construct smart interfaces, which can respond to visible light. In this work, we used microcontact printing (μCP) to construct diselenide patterns on quartz substrates. Fluorescent patterns were obtained on the modified surfaces via the visible-light-induced diselenide metathesis reaction, which allowed the patterning process to be fast, dynamically erasable, and compatible with different fluorescent molecules including rhodamine B and boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) used in this work. A variety of analytical methods offered comprehensive evidence for the success of the printing of diselenides here. We further printed diselenide and disulfide intersecting stripes on one single quartz substrate layer by layer and introduced rhodamine B and BODIPY to obtain a multicolored pattern simultaneously. By taking advantage of their responsiveness to different wavelengths, the composite pattern of disulfides and diselenides could be erased by two stepwise stages. The fluorescent images of the modified substrate showed a good agreement with the pattern of the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamp, indicating the methodology with a potential application for information storage.

Materials with Tunable Optical Properties for Wearable Epidermal Sensing in Health Monitoring

Advances in wearable epidermal sensors have revolutionized the way that physiological signals are captured and measured for health monitoring. One major challenge is to convert physiological signals to easily readable signals in a convenient way. One possibility for wearable epidermal sensors is based on visible readouts. There are a range of materials whose optical properties can be tuned by parameters such as temperature, pH, light, and electric fields. Herein, this review covers and highlights a set of materials with tunable optical properties and their integration into wearable epidermal sensors for health monitoring. Specifically, the recent progress, fabrication, and applications of these materials for wearable epidermal sensors are summarized and discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the next generation wearable devices are proposed.
