Gemella morbillorum Cryptogenic Brain Abscess: A Case Report and Literature Review

A case of cryptogenic brain abscess caused by Gemella morbillorum is reported in a 28-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with seizures and hemiparesis. The patient underwent successful stereotactic drainage of the abscess with complete resolution of symptoms and radiographic evidence of resolution. We report the significant pathogenic potential of a normal commensal rarely identified in neurologic infections.

Gemella morbillorum: an underestimated aetiology of central nervous system infection?

A case is reported of cerebellar abscess and diffuse cerebritis due to Gemella morbillorum. The clinical course was 'biphasic', developing with an acute meningeal infection followed shortly afterwards by suppuration in the cerebellar and cerebral parenchyma; this pattern seemed to suggest a latent survival of the aetiological agent, probably within the central nervous system (CNS), despite systemic antibiotic therapy. Based upon a review of cases so far described, infections of the CNS caused by G. morbillorum appear to be an emerging reality.

Cerebellar abscess by Gemella morbillorum in a patient with inter-atrial communication

Gemella morbillorum, a commensal of the oropharynx, upper respiratory, urogenital and gastrointestinal tract is rarely associated with infections in humans. However, an increasing number of infectious processes in different locations have been reported. Cerebral abscesses caused by these bacteria are extremely uncommon with only four cases previously described in the literature. We present the case of a cerebellar abscess by Gemella morbillorum in a 50 years-old man with inter-atrial communication dealt by surgical excision and antimicrobial therapy.

Meningitis due to Gemella haemolysans in a pediatric case

Gemella haemolysans is a rare pathogen in cases of bacterial meningitis. We present a case of meningitis due to G. haemolysans in a 17-month-old boy. This is the first reported case of Gemella meningitis in a child. The patient completely recovered following intravenous therapy with linezolid and chloramphenicol.
