The Effect of Calcineurin Inhibitors on MMPs Activity in Heart and Their Side Effects-A Review of Literature

This review focuses on the role of metalloproteinases in the pathogenesis of myocardial injury in various disease entities. It reveals how the expression and serum levels of metalloproteinases and their inhibitors change in many disease states. At the same time, the study offers a review of the impact of immunosuppressive treatment on this relationship. Modern immunosuppressive treatment is based mainly on the use of calcineurin inhibitors, including cyclosporine A and tacrolimus. The use of these drugs may carry a number of side effects, specifically to the cardiovascular system. The scale and degree of long-term influence on the organism remains unclear, but a significant risk of complications for transplant recipients who take immunosuppressive drugs as part of their daily treatment is to be expected. Therefore, the knowledge on this subject should be expanded and the negative effects of post-transplant therapy minimized. Immunosuppressive therapy plays an important role in the expression and activation of tissue metalloproteinases and their specific inhibitors, which leads to many tissue changes. The presented study is a collection of research results on the effects of calcineurin inhibitors on the heart, with particular emphasis placed on the participation of MMP-2 and MMP-9. It is also an analysis of the effects of specific heart diseases on myocardial remodeling through inductive or inhibitory effects on matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors.

The pathogenesis of aging-induced left atrial appendage thrombus formation and cardioembolic stroke in mice is influenced by inflammation-derived matrix metalloproteinases

Elderly people without atrial fibrillation (AF) still have a high incidence of cardioembolic stroke, suggesting that thrombus formation within the left atrial appendage (LAA) may also occur in an AF-independent manner. In the present study, we explored the potential mechanisms for aging-induced LAA thrombus formation and stroke in mice. We monitored stroke events in 180 aging male mice (14-24 months) and assessed left atrium (LA) remodeling by echocardiography at different ages. Mice that had stroke were implanted with telemeters to confirm AF. Histological features of LA and LAA thrombi were examined, as well as collagen content, expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and leukocyte density in the atria at different ages, in mice with or without stroke. Also, the effects of MMP inhibition on stroke incidence and atrial inflammation were tested. We detected 20 mice (11 %) with stroke, 60 % of which were within 18-19 months of age. Although we did not detect AF in mice with stroke, we detected the presence of LAA thrombi, suggesting that stroke originated from the hearts of these mice. Compared with 18-month-old mice without stroke, 18-month-old stroke mice had enlarged LA with a very thin endocardium, that was associated with less collagen and heightened MMP expression in the atria. During aging, we found that the expression of mRNAs for atrial MMP7, MMP8, and MMP9 peaked at 18 months, which closely correlated with reductions in collagen content and the time-window for cardioembolic stroke in these mice. Treatment of mice with an MMP inhibitor at 17-18 months of age reduced atrial inflammation and remodeling, and stroke incidence. Taken together, our study demonstrates that aging-induced LAA thrombus formation occurs through a mechanism involving upregulation of MMPs and breakdown of collagen, and that treatment with an MMP inhibitor may be effective as a treatment strategy for this heart condition.

Circulating miR-451a Expression May Predict Recurrence in Atrial Fibrillation Patients after Catheter Pulmonary Vein Ablation

Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent tachyarrhythmia in clinical practice, with very high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality with a high-cost impact in health systems. Currently, it is one of the main causes of stroke and subsequent heart failure and sudden death. miRNAs mediate in several processes involved in cardiovascular disease, including fibrosis and electrical and structural remodeling. Several studies suggest a key role of miRNAs in the course and maintenance of atrial fibrillation. In our study, we aimed to identify the differential expression of circulating miRNAs and their predictive value as biomarkers of recurrence in atrial fibrillation patients undergoing catheter pulmonary vein ablation. To this effect, 42 atrial fibrillation patients were recruited for catheter ablation. We measured the expression of 84 miRNAs in non-recurrent and recurrent groups (45.2%), both in plasma from peripheral and left atrium blood. Expression analysis showed that miRNA-451a is downregulated in recurrent patients. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that miR-451a in left atrium plasma could predict atrial fibrillation recurrence after pulmonary vein isolation. In addition, atrial fibrillation recurrence is positively associated with the increment of scar percentage. Our data suggest that miRNA-451a expression plays an important role in AF recurrence by controlling fibrosis and progression.

Matrix Metalloproteinases in Cardioembolic Stroke: From Background to Complications

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are endopeptidases participating in physiological processes of the brain, maintaining the blood-brain barrier integrity and playing a critical role in cerebral ischemia. In the acute phase of stroke activity, the expression of MMPs increase and is associated with adverse effects, but in the post-stroke phase, MMPs contribute to the process of healing by remodeling tissue lesions. The imbalance between MMPs and their inhibitors results in excessive fibrosis associated with the enhanced risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), which is the main cause of cardioembolic strokes. MMPs activity disturbances were observed in the development of hypertension, diabetes, heart failure and vascular disease enclosed in CHA₂DS₂VASc score, the scale commonly used to evaluate the risk of thromboembolic complications risk in AF patients. MMPs involved in hemorrhagic complications of stroke and activated by reperfusion therapy may also worsen the stroke outcome. In the present review, we briefly summarize the role of MMPs in the ischemic stroke with particular consideration of the cardioembolic stroke and its complications. Moreover, we discuss the genetic background, regulation pathways, clinical risk factors and impact of MMPs on the clinical outcome.

The Role of Major Inflammatory Biomarkers in the Pathogenesis of Atrial Fibrillation

Many studies have reported a relationship between inflammation and atrial fibrillation (AF). According to the literature, inflammation is the key component in pathophysiological processes during the development of AF; the amplification of inflammatory pathways triggers AF, and, at the same time, AF increases the inflammatory state. The plasma levels of several inflammatory biomarkers are elevated in patients with AF; therefore, inflammation might contribute to both the maintenance and occurrence of AF and its thromboembolic complications. Numerous inflammatory markers have been linked to AF, including CD40 ligand, fibrinogen, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, myeloperoxidase, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and serum amyloid A. There are many pathophysiological aspects of AF that are linked to these inflammatory biomarkers, including atrial structural remodeling and atrial dilatation, increased atrial myocyte expression, fluctuations in calcium cycling, cardiac remodeling promotion, increased cardiac myocyte proliferation and terminal differentiation, production of several MMPs, the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and cardiomyocyte apoptosis, an increased degree of fibrosis in atrial myocardium, and the progression and development of atherogenesis and atherothrombosis. The present review article aims to provide an updated overview and focus on the basic role of different biomarkers of inflammation in the pathophysiological aspects of the pathogenesis of AF.

Mechanisms of Quercetin against atrial fibrillation explored by network pharmacology combined with molecular docking and experimental validation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common atrial arrhythmia for which there is no specific therapeutic drug. Quercetin (Que) has been used to treat cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmias. In this study, we explored the mechanism of action of Que in AF using network pharmacology and molecular docking. The chemical structure of Que was obtained from Pubchem. TCMSP, Swiss Target Prediction, Drugbank, STITCH, Pharmmapper, CTD, GeneCards, DISGENET and TTD were used to obtain drug component targets and AF-related genes, and extract AF and normal tissue by GEO database differentially expressed genes by GEO database. The top targets were IL6, VEGFA, JUN, MMP9 and EGFR, and Que for AF treatment might involve the role of AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, MAPK signaling pathway and IL-17 signaling pathway. Molecular docking showed that Que binds strongly to key targets and is differentially expressed in AF. In vivo results showed that Que significantly reduced the duration of AF fibrillation and improved atrial remodeling, reduced p-MAPK protein expression, and inhibited the progression of AF. Combining network pharmacology and molecular docking approaches with in vivo studies advance our understanding of the intensive mechanisms of Quercetin, and provide the targeted basis for clinical Atrial fibrillation treatment.

Association between T-tau protein and Aβ42 in plasma neuronal-derived exosomes and cognitive impairment in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation and the role of anticoagulant therapy and inflammatory mechanisms

BACKGROUND

This study explores whether the differences in cognitive performance among individuals with permanent atrial fibrillation (AF) are attributable to the duration of AF and anticoagulant therapy and explores the possible inflammatory mechanism of cognitive dysfunction related to AF.

METHODS

A total of 260 patients aged 50-75 years without previous cerebrovascular events were enrolled in this study. These 260 patients had been divided into the AF group (140 patients) and sinus rhythm group (120 patients). In the AF group, we divided participants into cognitive impairment (CI) group (90 patients) and cognitive normal (CN) group (50 patients). In the sinus rhythm group, we also divided participants into CI group (61 patients) and CN group (59 patients). The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess the cognitive function of all participants. Neuronal-derived exosomes were enriched in peripheral blood by immunoprecipitation and were confirmed by a transmission electron microscope, nanoparticle tracking analysis, and western blot. Alzheimer's disease-pathogenic exosomal proteins and inflammatory cytokines were quantified. The association between AF and cognitive function was estimated by logistic regression analysis. ANOVA or Welch's t-test compared the difference in protein concentrations between groups.

RESULTS

Non-anticoagulant therapy in patients with AF was significantly associated with CI (OR = 13.99, 95% CI: 2.67-73.36, p < .01). The incidence of dementia in patients with AF > 3 years was significantly higher than in patients with AF ≤ 3 years, but there was no significant difference in total cognitive dysfunction (mild cognitive impairment [MCI] + dementia) (p = .126). The adjusted exosome concentrations of T-tau and amyloid-β protein 42 (Aβ42) in the CI group were significantly higher than in the CN group (p < .001). The serum concentrations of IL-6 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in patients with AF were higher than those in patients with sinus rhythm (p <  .001).

CONCLUSION

Aβ42 and T-tau in peripheral blood neuronal-derived exosomes maybe be associated with the early diagnosis of CI in patients with permanent AF. However, the value of Aβ42 and T-tau for CI in patients with permanent AF still needs to be confirmed in future randomized control trials.

The importance of matrix metalloproteinases in the development of atrial fibrillation in obesity

Background. One of the trends in modern cardiology is the study of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) system. Currently, an increase in plasma concentrations of some MMPs and their tissue inhibitors is considered as one of the earliest biochemical markers of myocardial fibrosis in various diseases of the cardiovascular system. Discusses the importance of MMP in the development of atrial fibrillation (AF). Aim. To study the effect of the MMP system on the development of AF in obese patients. Materials and methods. The study included 105 patients with a body mass index of more than 30 kg/m2. Depending on the presence of AF, the patients were divided into 2 groups. The criterion for inclusion of patients in group 1 was the presence of documented AF paroxysm in 55 obese patients. The comparison group (group 2) consisted of 50 obese patients without heart rhythm disorders. When patients were included in the study, in order to assess the severity of visceral obesity, all patients underwent a general clinical examination, echocardiography. To determine the activity of the MMP system, venous blood was taken from patients. Results. Significantly higher values of MMP-9 were detected in patients with obesity and paroxysmal AF 315.753.4 ng/ml than in patients with obesity without heart rhythm disorders 220.954.7 ng/ml (p=0.002); the values of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 were 185.342.2 and 119.242.6 ng/ml, respectively (p=0.007). In patients with obesity and paroxysmal AF, a correlation of moderate strength between the level of MMP-9 and the volume of left atrium and a direct dependence of moderate strength between the ratio of waist volume to height and the plasma values of MMP-9 was revealed. The MMP-9 index (AUC 0.92) had a high diagnostic value for determining the probability of having a paroxysmal form of AF in obese patients. With an increase in the level of MMP-9 more than 295 ng/ml, it is possible to predict the presence of paroxysmal AF in obese patients with a sensitivity of 74.5% and a specificity of 94%. Conclusion. In patients with obesity and paroxysmal AF, a significant increase in the parameters of the MMP system (MMP-9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1) was revealed when compared with obese patients without heart rhythm disorders (p0.05). With an increase in MMP-9 of more than 285 ng/ml in obese patients, the appearance of AF with a sensitivity of 74.5% and a specificity of 94% can be predicted.

Prestroke Statins Improve Prognosis of Atrial Fibrillation-Associated Stroke through Increasing Suppressor of Cytokine Signaling-3 Levels

BACKGROUND

Cerebral infarction associated with atrial fibrillation (AF) has relatively higher mortality and morbidity rates than other types of stroke. Statins are being commonly prescribed to patients with stoke. However, the use of statins in AF-related stroke, especially prestroke, has not been well studied. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of prestroke statins could improve clinical outcomes in patients with AF-related acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and its mechanism.

METHODS

This prospective study enrolled 453 AF-associated AIS patients from 4 medical centers and divided them into 2 groups based on the statin use before the stroke episode. All patients received comprehensive clinical examinations including 72-h Holter electrocardiogram monitoring and were followed up for 3 months. Plasma suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS-3) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels were measured by ELISA on admission and days 3 and 7 after enrollment. The endpoints were death, major disability (modified Rankin Scale score ≥3), and composite outcome (death/major disability) at 3 months after the AIS episode.

RESULTS

Plasma SOCS-3 levels were significantly increased and MMP-9 levels decreased in patients in the prestroke statin group on hospital admission and days 3 and 7 after enrollment (p < 0.001). Furthermore, our data suggested that baseline plasma SOCS-3 levels were associated with increased risk of 3-month mortality (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.012; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.006-1.018; p < 0.001) and major disability (adjusted OR, 1.013; 95% CI, 1.007-1.02; p < 0.001). Similarly, baseline plasma MMP-9 levels were also associated with increased risk of 3-month mortality (adjusted OR, 1.037; 95% CI, 1.022-1.053; p < 0.001) and major disability (adjusted OR, 1.038; 95% CI, 1.022-1.55; p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Our data suggested that the prestroke use of statins improved the clinical outcomes in AIS patients with AF by upregulating the level of SOCS-3 and reducing the plasma MMP-9 level.

The Role of Oxidative Stress in Cardiovascular Aging and Cardiovascular Diseases

Aging can be seen as process characterized by accumulation of oxidative stress induced damage. Oxidative stress derives from different endogenous and exogenous processes, all of which ultimately lead to progressive loss in tissue and organ structure and functions. The oxidative stress theory of aging expresses itself in age-related diseases. Aging is in fact a primary risk factor for many diseases and in particular for cardiovascular diseases and its derived morbidity and mortality. Here we highlight the role of oxidative stress in age-related cardiovascular aging and diseases. We take into consideration the molecular mechanisms, the structural and functional alterations, and the diseases accompanied to the cardiovascular aging process.

Serum Matrix Metalloproteinases and Left Atrial Remodeling-The Hoorn Study

Extracellular matrix protein turnover may play an important role in left atrial (LA) remodelling. The aim is to investigate the associations between matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) and LA volume index (LAVI) and if these associations are independent of TIMP-1 levels. Participants from The Hoorn Study, a population-based cohort study (n = 674), underwent echocardiography. Serum MMPs (i.e., MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-9, and MMP-10) and TIMP-1 levels were measured with ELISA. Multiple linear regression analyses were used. MMP-1 levels were not associated with LAVI. Higher MMP-2 levels were associated with larger LAVI (regression coefficient per SD increase in MMP (95% CI); 0.03 (0.01; 0.05). Higher MMP-3 and MMP-9 levels were associated with smaller LAVI; −0.04 (−0.07; −0.01) and −0.04 (−0.06; −0.02) respectively. Only in women were higher MMP-10 levels associated with larger LAVI; 0.04 (0.00; 0.07, p-interaction 0.04). Additionally, only in women were higher TIMP-1 levels associated with smaller LAVI; −0.05 (−0.09; −0.01, p-interaction 0.03). The associations between MMPs and LAVI were independent of TIMP-1 levels. In conclusion, serum MMPs are associated with LAVI, independent of CVD risk factors and TIMP-1 levels. In addition, these associations differ according to sex and within MMP subgroups. This shows that the role of MMPs in LA remodelling is complex.

Suppression of experimental atrial fibrillation in a canine model of rapid atrial pacing by the phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor cilostazol

OBJECTIVE

Atrial fibrillation (AF) represents the most common arrhythmia encountered in cardiology department. The purpose of this study was designed to investigate whether cilostazol, an oral phosphodiesterase 3 inhibitor (PDE3) could have protective effects on atrial remodeling in a canine model of AF and explore the potential molecular mechanisms.

METHODS

Dogs were randomly assigned to Sham, Paced, Paced + cilostazol group, 7 dogs in each group. In Sham group, pacemaker was instrumented but without pacing. Rapid atrial pacing (RAP) at 600 or 500 bpm/min was maintained in Paced group and Paced + cilo group for 2 h or 2 weeks in acute or chronic experiment, respectively. The Paced + cilo group of dogs were pretreated with cilostazol orally (10 mg·kg^-1·d^-1, cilo) for 1 h or 2 days prior RAP induction and served as treatment group. Atrial effective refractory periods (AERP) at different basic cycle lengths (BCLs), inducibility, and duration time of AF were measured after pacing for 2 h. The blood sample, echocardiography, histopathology, inflammation and oxidative stress makers, protein and mRNA expression levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 were detected after 2 weeks pacing in each group.

RESULTS

Significant changes in electrophysiological parameters were observed in the acute RAP canine model, the AERPs shortened with increased inducibility and duration of AF, which was attenuated by cilostazol (P < 0.05). The serum inflammation makers as interleukin-8 (IL-8) and toll like receptor 4 (TLR 4) levels and oxidative stress indicators like xanthine oxidative (XO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the Paced group was significantly higher than that in Sham group (P < 0.01), and was significantly reduced by cilostazol treatment (P < 0.01). The level of mean platelet volume (MPV) which is one of the platelet indices was significantly elevated in Paced group (P < 0.01). While after cilostazol treated for 2 weeks, the level of MPV was obviously decreased than Paced group (P < 0.01). Pathology and echocardiography studies showed that cilostazol can also prevent RAP induced cardiac fibrosis and structural remodeling. The MPV level has close correlations with IL-8, TLR4, XO and ROS (all P < 0.01). MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression were significantly increased in Paced group (all P < 0.01), which can be attenuated by cilostazol.

CONCLUSIONS

Cilostazol may have protective effects on RAP-induced atrial remodeling by anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative stress action and regulate the extracellular collagen matrix in a canine model. Moreover, MPV level is associated with inflammation and oxidative stress response of RAP, which might be an important predictors of new-onset and recurrent AF.

Atrial contractility and fibrotic biomarkers are associated with atrial fibrillation after elective coronary artery bypass grafting

OBJECTIVE

New-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation is common after cardiac surgery. Less has been reported about the relationship among fibrosis, inflammation, calcium-induced left atrial and right atrial contractile forces, and postoperative atrial fibrillation. We sought to identify predictors of postoperative atrial fibrillation.

METHODS

From August 2016 to February 2018, we evaluated 229 patients who had preoperative sinus rhythm before elective primary coronary artery bypass grafting. Of 229 patients, 191 maintained sinus rhythm postoperatively, whereas 38 patients developed atrial fibrillation. Preoperative tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1, pentraxin-3, matrix metallopeptidase-9, galectin-3, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, growth differentiation factor 15, and transforming growth factor-ß were measured. Clinical and echocardiographic findings (tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion for right heart function) and calcium-induced force measurements from left atrial and right atrial-derived skinned myocardial fibers were recorded.

RESULTS

Patients with atrial fibrillation were older (P = .001), had enlarged left atrial (P = .0001) and right atrial areas (P = .0001), and had decreased tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (P = .001). Levels of matrix metallopeptidase-9 and pentraxin-3 were decreased (P < .05), whereas growth differentiation factor 15 was increased (P = .001). We detected lower left atrial force values at calcium-induced force measurements 5.5 (P < .05), 5.4 (P < .01), and 5.3 to 4.52 (P = .0001) and right atrial force values at calcium-induced force measurements 5.0 to 4.52 (P < .05) in patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation. Multivariable analysis showed that advanced age (P = .033), decreased left atrial force value at calcium-induced force measurement of 5.5 (P = .033), enlarged left atrial (P = .013) and right atrial (P = .081) areas, and reduced tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (P = .010) independently predicted postoperative atrial fibrillation.

CONCLUSIONS

Advanced age, decreased left atrial force value at calcium-induced force measurement of 5.5, enlarged left atrial and right atrial areas, and reduced tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion were identified as independent predictors for postoperative atrial fibrillation.

Qiliqiangxin attenuates atrial structural remodeling in prolonged pacing-induced atrial fibrillation in rabbits

Qiliqiangxin (QL) can attenuate myocardial remodeling and improve cardiac function in some cardiac diseases, including heart failure and hypertension. This study was to explore the effects and mechanism of QL on atrial structural remodeling in atrial fibrillation (AF). Twenty-one rabbits were randomly divided into a sham-operation group, pacing group (pacing with 600 beats per minute for 4 weeks), and treatment group (2.5 g/kg/day). Before pacing, the rabbits received QL-administered p.o. for 1 week. We measured atrial electrophysiological parameters in all groups to evaluate AF inducibility and the atrial effective refractory period (AERP). Echocardiography evaluated cardiac function and structure. TUNEL detection, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, and Masson's trichrome staining were performed. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting (WB) were used to detect alterations in calcium channel L-type dihydropyridine receptor α2 subunit (DHPR) and fibrosis-related regulatory factors. AF inducibility was markedly decreased after QL treatment. Furthermore, we found that AERP and DHPR were reduced significantly in pacing rabbits compared with sham rabbits; treatment with QL increased DHPR and AERP compared to the pacing group. The QL group showed significantly decreased mast cell density and improved atrial ejection fraction values compared with the pacing group. Moreover, QL decreased interventricular septum thickness (IVSd) and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD). Compared with the sham group, the levels of TGFβ1 and P-smad2/3 were significantly upregulated in the pacing group. QL reduced TGF-β1 and P-smad2/3 levels and downstream fibrosis-related factors. Our study demonstrated that QL treatment attenuates atrial structural remodeling potentially by inhibiting TGF-β1/P-smad2/3 signaling pathway.

Evaluation of left atrial function via two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with coronary artery ectasia

BACKGROUND

Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) is a segmental dilation of an epicardial coronary artery. Our aim was to evaluate the left atrial (LA) function in patients with CAE.

METHODS

Twenty-seven consecutive patients with CAE and 33 subjects without significant coronary artery disease were included in our study. LA function was evaluated with two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2DSTE).

RESULTS

The systolic, early diastolic and late diastolic strains and strain rates were not statistically significantly different between the two groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings demonstrated that LA function may not be affected by CAE when assessed with 2DSTE. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Clin Ultrasound 45:231-237, 2017.

The serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 level is an independent predictor of recurrence after ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation

OBJECTIVES

This study investigated whether the serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 level is an independent predictor of recurrence after catheter ablation for persistent atrial fibrillation.

METHODS

Fifty-eight consecutive patients with persistent atrial fibrillation were enrolled and underwent catheter ablation. The serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 level was detected before ablation and its relationship with recurrent arrhythmia was analyzed at the end of the follow-up.

RESULTS

After a mean follow-up of 12.1±7.2 months, 21 (36.2%) patients had a recurrence of their arrhythmia after catheter ablation. At baseline, the matrix metalloproteinase-9 level was higher in the patients with recurrence than in the non-recurrent group (305.77±88.90 vs 234.41±93.36 ng/ml, respectively, p=0.006). A multivariate analysis showed that the matrix metalloproteinase-9 level was an independent predictor of arrhythmia recurrence, as was a history of atrial fibrillation and the diameter of the left atrium.

CONCLUSION

The serum matrix metalloproteinase-9 level is an independent predictor of recurrent arrhythmia after catheter ablation in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation.
