Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although different digital occlusal analyzers have been marketed, comparative studies are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the repeatability and reproducibility of 2 different digital occlusal analyzers (T-Scan and OccluSense) for measuring the right- and left-side balance of occlusal contact forces. MATERIAL AND METHODS The repeatability and reproducibility of the 2 digital occlusal analyzers for measuring the balance of occlusal contact forces were determined and compared by using the Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility tests based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 5725-2 and ISO 5725-3 standards. Ten different dental casts were mounted in the maximum intercuspation position on a semi-adjustable articulator. Then, the balance of occlusal contact forces in each of the 10 articulated dental casts was measured 24 times with each of the 2 digital occlusal analyzers. In addition, as the OccluSense, unlike the T-Scan, does not have a centering support for the piezoelectric film sensor, measurements with it were performed without and with a custom-designed and manufactured centering support. Finally, the repeatability and reproducibility of both digital occlusal analyzers were determined and compared using the Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility tests. RESULTS The repeatability and reproducibility tests revealed that only 0.8% of the variance of the measurements obtained with the T-Scan was due to repeatability and reproducibility (0.4% repeatability, 0.4% reproducibility). In contrast, 12% of the variance of the measurements obtained with the OccluSense was due to repeatability and reproducibility (2.2% repeatability, 9.8% reproducibility). However, when using OccluSense with the centering support, the variance decreased to 6.4% (2.8% repeatability, 3.6% reproducibility). According to the Automotive Industry Action Group classification, the repeatability and reproducibility of the T-Scan were good, those of the OccluSense poor, and those of the OccluSense with the centering support medium. CONCLUSIONS The repeatability and reproducibility of the T-Scan were significantly better than those of the OccluSense for measuring the balance of occlusal contact forces. Furthermore, the repeatability and reproducibility of the OccluSense were significantly improved when used with a device to center the piezoelectric film sensor between the incisors. Nevertheless, the repeatability and reproducibility of the T-Scan were better.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Digital occlusal analyzers allow the recording of dental contact forces. Some authors assume a unique location for the center of contact forces at the position of maximum intercuspation, while others indicate variations in dental contact forces when recorded at different times of the day. Which approach is more appropriate is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze whether a change in the balance of masticatory forces influences the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three different dental casts, selected under dental criteria, were mounted in maximum intercuspation on a semiadjustable articulator equipped with a pattern indicating 9 different force application points (intersection point between 3 longitudinal rows and 3 transverse columns). A force of constant magnitude (169 N) was applied 10 times at each of the application points, and occlusal forces were recorded with a digital occlusal analyzer. Then, two variables were studied: the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude. Each force application position (9 positions × 3 dental casts=27 in total) was repeated 10 times, and measured data were statistically analyzed with 2-way repeated measures ANOVA (α=.05) test. RESULTS The repeatability of the method indicated that the coefficient of variation mean was 0.37% in the location of the center of contact forces and that its magnitude was 3.70%. The 2-way repeated measures ANOVA test revealed statistically significant variations in the location of the center of contact forces and its magnitude, revealing that longitudinal changes of the application point of masticatory forces affected the magnitude of contact forces and that longitudinal and transverse changes of the application point of masticatory forces affected the location of the center of contact forces. CONCLUSIONS The location of the center of contact force and its magnitude provided by a digital occlusal analyzer at the position of maximum intercuspation are not necessarily unique to each articulated dental cast. Even if the intensity of the masticatory force remains unchanged, changes in its lateral or longitudinal balance also influence the result of the occlusion forces.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The simultaneous presence of maxillary and mandibular clear aligners alters the vertical dimension and the quantity and quality of occlusal contacts. Few data in the literature explain how this occurs and the effects on neuromuscular coordination. This study aimed to evaluate occlusal contacts and muscular balance during treatment with clear aligners over a short follow-up time. METHODS Twenty-six female adult patients were enrolled in this study. The center of occlusal force (COF) was evaluated using a T-Scan II device, whereas muscular symmetry and balance were determined through surface electromyography using a standardized protocol that reduces anthropometric and electrode variations. Both evaluations were performed in centric occlusion and with aligners worn before treatment, after 3 months, and after 6 months. RESULTS A statistically significant variation in COF position was reported in the sagittal plane but not in the transverse plane. The shift in the COF position was followed by a change in muscular balance evaluated through surface electromyography. CONCLUSIONS Treatment with clear aligners resulted in an anterior shift of the COF when biting in centric occlusion and a posterior shift when the aligners were worn in healthy female patients after 6 months of observation. This change in occlusal contact was followed by an improvement in muscular function symmetry in the short term when aligners were worn, compared with the centric occlusion during treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to analyze the 5-year occlusal change in posterior implant-supported single crowns and the association between the relative occlusal force (ROF) and peri-implant bone level. MATERIALS AND METHODS Partially edentulous patients who had received implant-supported single crowns in the posterior region were included. Occlusal examinations with a computerized occlusion analysis system were conducted at 0.5, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months after delivery of the implant-supported single crown. The ROFs of implant-supported single crowns, mesial adjacent teeth, and control natural teeth were recorded. Intraoral periapical radiographs were taken at each follow-up time to evaluate marginal bone level (MBL). Ordinary least square regression was used to analyze the association between ROF and MBL. RESULTS Thirty-seven posterior implant-supported single crowns in 33 participants (23.9 to 70.0 years) were followed up for 0.5 to 60 months [(42.4 ± 26.0) months]. The ROF of implant-supported single crowns increased from 2 weeks to 3 months (P < 0.01) and increased continuously between all two sequential time points from 6 to 36 months, with significant differences (P < 0.05). Then ROFs of implant-supported single crowns were significantly higher than those of control teeth at 48 and 60 months (P < 0.05). Regression analysis showed that ROF was significantly associated with MBL with a coefficient of 0.008 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The ROFs of posterior implant-supported single crown have significant change during 5 years' follow-up. The association between ROF and MBL has limited clinical significance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The occlusion of implant-supported single crowns should be carefully monitored during follow-up examinations, and occlusal adjustment should be considered to prevent overloading.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of masseter muscle activity during wakefulness and sleep on tooth wear. METHODS Sixteen participants with no or mild tooth wear (NMTW group) and sixteen participants with moderate-to-severe tooth wear (MSTW group) were enrolled. The severity of tooth wear was evaluated using the occlusal and incisal indices of the tooth wear index. Surface electromyography was performed to record the electrical activity of the left masseter muscle during wakefulness and sleep. Electromyographic activity was detected using an electromyographic threshold of 5% and 20% of maximal voluntary clenching (MVC). The total duration of electromyographic activity and bruxism episodes were calculated. RESULTS The mean ages of the NMTW and MSTW groups were 71.75 ± 7.61 years and 71.69 ± 7.49 years, respectively. The mean cumulative duration of electromyographic activity during wakefulness using a threshold of >5% MVC was 6.44 ± 4.52 min/h and 13.62 ± 10.08 min/h for the NMTW and MSTW groups, respectively (p=0.048). The mean total durations of electromyographic activity during wakefulness and sleep using a threshold of >20% MVC were 1.08 ± 1.70 min/h and 1.05 ± 3.02 min/h, respectively, in the NMTW group and 4.78 ± 6.37 min/h and 1.61 ± 1.79 min/h, respectively, in the MSTW group (p=0.048 and p=0.003, respectively). CONCLUSION These results suggest that masseter electromyographic activity during wakefulness and sleep may be related to the severity of tooth wear.

Abstract
Objective—To perform a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) study at five Dental Colleges, using intraoral sensors and muscular electrodes. Methods and Materials—One hundred students were randomly assigned to a treatment group to receive the ICAGD coronoplasty, or a control group that received tooth polishing. All subjects answered symptom questionnaires: Beck Depression Inventory-II, Functional Restrictions, and Chronic Pain Symptom and Frequency. Subjects self-reported after ICAGD or placebo at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. The Student’s t-Test analyzed the measured data. The Mann–Whitney U Test analyzed the subjective data (Alpha = 0.05). Results—The Disclusion Times, BDI-II scores, and Symptom Scales were similar between groups prior to treatment (p > 0.05). At 1 week, all three measures reduced in the treatment group, continuing to decline over 6 months (p < 0.05), but not for the controls (p > 0.05). Symptom Frequency, Functional Restrictions, and Pain Frequencies were higher in the treated group (p < 0.05), but declined after ICAGD compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusions—ICAGD reduced Pain, Functional Restrictions, Symptom Frequency, and Emotional Depression within 1 week, which continued for 6 months. The tooth polishing did not initiate a placebo response.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the temporomandibular joint, the prevalence of single and multiple diagnosis and potential sided domination of temporomandibular dysfunction in patients with temporomandibular disorder-myofascial pain with referral. The study group enrolled 50 people-37 females and 13 males between 18 and 25 years old with an average age of 23.36 ± 2.14. The patients underwent joint vibration analysis. Sixty seven percent of all examined tem-poromandibular joints were classified as group I according to Mark Piper's classification. Class IIIA appeared in 17% of joints. Eight percent of temporomandibular joints were classified as class IVA. There were no statistically significant differences in the prevalence of temporomandibular disorder with respect to gender (p = 0.838639). The relatively high prevalence of multiple diagnoses proved the overlapping nature of muscle and intraarticular disorders. Twenty eight percent of the subjects suffered from a combination of myofascial pain with referral and bilateral temporoman-dibular dysfunction. In 62% of the patients a lack of intraarticular disorders was reported. The suggestion that there exists sided domination in the occurrence of temporomandibular disorders has not been confirmed. Due to the small sample size, such differences cannot be excluded. Fur-ther research is needed.

Abstract
The maintenance of postural balance can be influenced by the lifestyle of a population. This study aimed to determine the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles during mandibular tasks and habitual and non-habitual chewing in indigenous individuals to reveal the differences among white Brazilian individuals. Sixty Brazilians (18 and 28 years) were divided into two groups: 30 Xingu indigenous individuals and 30 white Brazilian individuals, with 20 men and 10 women in each group. The individuals were assessed using the normalized electromyographic activity of mandibular tasks (rest, protrusion, right and left laterality) and electromyographic activity of masticatory cycles in habitual (peanuts and raisins) and non-habitual (Parafilm M) chewing. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test (p < .05). Comparisons between the groups demonstrated significant differences. Indigenous individuals group presented a decrease in the normalized electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles during mandibular rest [right masseter (p = .002) and left masseter (p = .004) muscles]. There was increase in the normalized electromyographic activity during protrusion [left temporal (p = .03) muscle]. There was increase in the electromyographic activity during chewing: peanuts [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .001) and right temporal (p = .01) muscles], raisins [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .002), right temporal (p = .008), left temporal (p = .01) muscles] and Parafilm M [left masseter muscle (p = .05)]. From the findings of this study, we concluded that in the comparison between indigenous and white individuals, positive changes were observed in the electromyographic pattern of the masticatory muscles in the mandibular postural conditions, with greater masticatory efficiency in the indigenous group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This pilot study was planned to analyze masticatory activation in bruxism patients with and without attrition by ultrasonographic evaluation of mandibular adductor muscles. METHODS Sixty bruxism patients (group 1: 30 without attrition, group 2: 30 with attrition) and an age-sex matched control of 30 (group 3) were clinically examined. The thickness of bilateral temporalis and masseter muscles during clench and rest was measured by ultrasonography. RESULTS The mean muscle thicknesses were higher in bruxing patients than in controls. In group 2, the clench/rest ratio (C/R) of the right and left masseter and temporal muscles were higher than the control group (p = 0.03, p = 0.01, p = 0.04, p = 0.03, respectively). CONCLUSION The thickness of chewing muscles increases with bruxism. The occlusal forces in the teeth increase, and therefore, the tooth wear increases. Ultrasonographic muscle thickness can be used to determine muscle activity in bruxism patients.

Abstract
Background. The aetiology of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) is multifactorial, whereas occlusal disharmony is one of the predisposing factors. Researchers still discuss the relation between occlusion and TMD. Objective. The study aims to investigate the relation between static occlusal parameters and TMD clinical symptoms using T-Scan II analysis system. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 44 persons divided into the treatment group of 20 TMD patients and the control group of 24 subjects without TMD. The main task of T-Scan II computerized occlusal analysis system was to record every patient’s occlusion and estimate static occlusal parameters: centre of occlusal force, asymmetry index of maximum occlusal force and occlusion time. These results were compared between groups, data related to patients’ complaints and clinical symptoms. The analysis was carried out using Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests. Results. Averages of the centre of occlusal force in TMD subjects were 6.55 ± 0.99 mm, in the control group – 5.88 ± 0.69 mm; the asymmetry index of maximum occlusal force averages: 15.90 ± 2.71 and 12.93 ± 1.88; occlusion time: 0.281 ± 0.036 s and 0.236 ± 0.022 s, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between two groups but they were found in the centre of occlusal force and the asymmetry index in the two groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions. There exists a relation between complaints of patients with TMD and static occlusion parameters. Values of the centre of the occlusal force distance and the asymmetry index of occlusal force in TMD patients with pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) were significantly higher than in the control group.

Abstract
Worn dentition, often accompanied by occlusion changes such as reduced vertical dimension, poses a big challenge to both diagnosis and treatment. Current established causes fail to explain the observed tooth wearing patterns, and the treatments based on the documented pathogeneses are often unpredictable and require frequent maintenance. From the perspective of stomatognathic system, we postulate that the role of maxillo-mandibular relation is a crucial part in the tooth wear progression patterns, and should be well addressed in treatment planning. Incompatible occlusion with the inherent tendency of maxillo-mandibular relation has a profound effect on either wearing of natural teeth or failures of restorations. With the aid of cephalometrics and analysis of occlusion it is now possible to reduce this fallacy and achieve a harmony by re-designing the occlusion. According to our treated worn dentition cases, the restoring treatment guided by the tendency of maxillo-mandibular relation showed very promising results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to assess how the morphology of the occlusal surfaces of premolars and molars influenced the occlusion time in a mixed gender group of young adults with full natural dentition. METHODS Fifty healthy volunteers with Angle's Class I occlusion were included in the study. After clinical examination, the alginate impressions of both arches were taken, and plaster casts were prepared. To assess the morphology of lateral teeth, the digital models were measured. Occlusal analysis was performed with the T-Scan® III to assess occlusion time. RESULTS A direct correlation was found between the cusp distance for the first upper premolar and occlusion time (r = -0.29, p<0.05) and the distance between distal buccal and distal lingual cusps of the first lower premolar and occlusion time (r = 0.33, p<0.05). The parameters that had their impact on occlusion time were the opening angle of lingual cusps for the lower molars and the furrow angle of aperture between cusps for first upper premolar. DISCUSSION Occlusal surface morphologies of premolars may have direct impact on occlusion time. However, anterior guidance parameters and morphologies of molars could also influence the time teeth are in contact coming to maximal intercuspation.
