Abstract
The dynamic price increases of fertilizers and the generation of organic waste are currently global issues. The growth of the population has led to increased production of solid municipal waste and a higher demand for food. Food production is inherently related to agriculture and, to achieve higher yields, it is necessary to replenish the soil with essential minerals. A synergistic approach that addresses both problems is the implementation of the composting process, which aligns with the principles of a circular economy. Food waste, green waste, paper waste, cardboard waste, and animal manure are promising feedstock materials for the extraction of valuable compounds. This review discusses key factors that influence the composting process and compares them with the input materials' parameters. It also considers methods for optimizing the process, such as the use of biochar and inoculation, which result in the production of the final product in a significantly shorter time and at lower financial costs. The applications of composts produced from various materials are described along with associated risks. In addition, innovative composting technologies are presented.

Abstract
With the continuous development of agriculture, Agricultural organic waste (AOW) has become the most abundant renewable energy on earth, and it is a hot spot of research in recent years to realize the recycling of AOW to achieve sustainable development of agricultural production. However, lignocellulose, which is difficult to degrade in AOW, greenhouse gas emissions, and pile pathogenic fungi and insect eggs are the biggest obstacles to its return to land use. In response to the above problems researchers promote organic waste recycling by pretreating AOW, controlling composting conditions and adding other substances to achieve green return of AOW to the field and promote the development of agricultural production. This review summarizes the ways of organic waste treatment, factors affecting composting and problems in composting by researchers in recent years, with a view to providing research ideas for future related studies.

Abstract
White and brown rot fungi efficiently deconstruct lignocellulose in wood, Earth's largest pool of aboveground biotic carbon and an important natural resource. Despite its vital importance, little is known about the metabolomic signatures among fungal species and nutritional modes (rot types). In this study, we used GC-MS metabolomics in solid wood substrates (in planta) to compare brown rot fungi (Rhodonia placenta and Gloeophylum trabeum) and white rot fungi (Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus) at two decay stages (earlier and later), finding identifiable patterns for brown rot fungi at later decay stages. These patterns occurred in highly reducing environments that were not observed in white rot fungi. Metabolomes measured among the two white rot fungi were notably different, but we found a potential biomarker compound, galactitol, that was characteristic to white rot taxa. In addition, we found that white rot fungi were more efficient at catabolizing phenolic compounds that were originally present in wood. Collectively, white rot fungi were characterized by measured sugar release relative to higher carbohydrate solubilization by brown rot fungi, a distinction in soluble sugar availability that might shape success in the face of "cheater" competitors. This need to protect excess free sugars may explain the differentially high brown rot fungal production of pyranones and furanones, likely linked to an expansion of polyketide synthase genes. IMPORTANCE Despite the ecological and economic importance of wood-degrading fungi, little is known about the array of metabolites that fungi produce during wood decomposition. This study provides an in-depth insight into the wood decomposition process by analyzing and comparing the changes of >100 compounds produced by fungi with metabolic distinct nutritional modes (white and brown rot fungi) at different decay stages. We found a unique pattern of metabolites that correlated well with brown rot (carbohydrate selective mode) in later decay. These compounds were in line with some of the physiochemical and genetic features previously seen in these fungi such as a faster sugar release, lower pH, and the expansion of polyketide-synthase genes compared to white rot fungi (lignin-degrading mode). This study provides spatiotemporally resolved mechanism insights as well as critical groundwork that will be valuable for studies in basic biology and ecology, as well as applied biomass deconstruction and bioremediation.

Abstract
Composting is an effective way to prevent and control the spread of pathogenic microorganisms which could put potential risk to humans and environment, from rural solid waste, especially sewage sludge and food waste. In the study, we aim to analyze the changes of pathogenic bacteria during the co-composting of rural sewage sludge and food waste. The results showed that only 27 pathogenic bacteria were detected after composting, compared to 50 pathogenic bacteria in the raw mixed pile. About 74% of pathogen concentrations dropped below 1000 copies/g after composting. Lactobacillus, Bacillus, Paenibacillus and Comamonas were the core pathogenic bacteria in the compost, of which concentrations were all significantly lower than that in the raw mixed pile at the end of composting. The concentration of Lactobacillus decreased to 3.03 × 103 copies/g compared to 0 d with 1.25 × 109 copies/g by the end of the composting, while that of Bacillus, Paenibacillus and Comamonas decreased to 2.77 × 104 copies/g, 2.13 × 104 copies/g and 3.38 × 102 copies/g, respectively, with 1.26 × 107 copies/g, 4.71 × 106 copies/g, 1.69 × 108 copies/g on 0 d. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that physicochemical factors and substances could affect the changes of pathogenic bacteria during composting, while temperature was the key influencing factor. In addition, certain potential pathogenic bacteria, such as Bacteroides-Bifidobacterium, show statistically strong and significant co-occurrence during composting, which may increase the risk of multiple infections and also influence their distribution. These findings provide a theoretical reference for biosafety prevention and control in the treatment and disposal of rural solid waste.

Abstract
Bioplastics are contemplated as remarkable substitutes for conventional plastics to accommodate green technological advancements. However, their industrial production has not been fully implemented owing to the cost of carbon resources. From another perspective, valorizing different paper mill wastes has become a prominent research topic. These materials may serve as an affording sustainable feedstock for bioplastic production. Adjustment of cardboard waste hydrolysate as suitable fermentation media for production of bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) has been investigated. Cardboard samples were defibered and dried before enzymatic hydrolysis. The enzymatic degradation of commercial cellulase was monitored over 15 days. Interestingly, 18.2 ± 0.2 g/L glucose yield was obtained from 50 g cardboard samples using a 1.5% (v/v) enzyme concentration. The samples exhibited maximum weight loss values of 69-73%. Meanwhile, five soil samples were collected from local sites in Lodz, Poland. A total of 31 bacterial isolates were screened and cultured on Nile blue plates. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the most potent producer revealed 100% similarity to Bacillus mycoides. Cardboard hydrolysates whole medium, modified MSM with cardboard hydrolysate and nitrogen depleted MSM with cardboard hydrolysate were utilized for PHA production, followed by PHA productivity and cell dry weight (CDW) estimation compared to glucose as a standard carbon source. An impressive PHA accumulation of 56% CDW was attained when the waste hydrolysate was used as a carbon source. FTIR and NMR analysis of the isolated PHA indicated that functional groups of the polymer were related to PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate). Thermal analysis demonstrates that PHB and PHB-CB (PHB produced from cardboard hydrolysate) have degradation temperatures of 380 and 369 °C, respectively, which reflect the high thermal stability and heat resistance compared to the same properties for a standard polymer. This is the first demonstration of full saccharification of corrugated cardboard paper waste for high-level production of PHA. In addition, the attained PHB productivity is one of the highest levels achieved from a real lignocellulosic waste.

Abstract
The effects of iron-carbon (Fe-C) particle amendment on organic matter degradation, product quality and functional microbial community in food waste composting were investigated. Fe-C particles (10%) were added to the material and composted for 32 days in a lab-scale composting system. The results suggested that Fe-C particle enhanced organic matter degradation by 12.3%, particularly lignocellulose, leading to a greater humification process (increased by 15.5%). In addition, NO3--N generation was enhanced (15.9%) by nitrification with more active ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase activities in the cooling and maturity periods. Fe-C particles not only significantly increased the relative abundances of Bacillus and Aspergillus for organic matter decomposition, but also decreased the relative abundances of acid-producing bacteria. RDA analysis demonstrated that the bacterial community was significantly influenced by dissolved organic matter, C/N, NO3--N, humic acid, volatile fatty acids and pH, while electrical conductivity was the key factor affecting the fungal community.
