Removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands: a review

AbstractPharmaceutical compounds are a significant source of environmental pollution, particularly in hospital wastewater, which contains high concentrations of such compounds. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a promising approach to removing pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater. This paper aims to review the current state of knowledge on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands, including the mechanism of removal, removal efficiency, and future prospects. Pharmaceutical contaminants have been considered to be one of the most emerging pollutants in recent years. In this review article, various studies on constructed wetlands are incorporated in order to remove the pharmaceutical contaminants. The nature of constructed wetland can be explained by understanding the types of constructed wetland, characteristics of hospital wastewater, removal mechanism, and removal efficiency. The results of the review indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater. The removal mechanism of these compounds involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, including adsorption, degradation, and uptake by wetland plants. The removal efficiency of constructed wetlands varies depending on several factors, including the type and concentration of pharmaceutical compounds, the design of the wetland system, and the environmental conditions. Further research is necessary to optimize the performance of these systems, particularly in the removal of emerging contaminants, to ensure their effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

Study on the performance of vertical flow constructed wetland microcosm with Canna sps. for treatment of high chromium-containing wastewater

Chromium (Cr (VI)) pollution has plagued the environment due to chromite mining and various industrial actions. Constructed wetlands (CW) have emerged as a potential wastewater management technique that utilizes physical, chemical, and biological processes. The present study investigates the use of vertical flow-constructed wetlands (CW) using manure-rich garden soil and sand as substrates in planted CW (CW-P) and unplanted CW (CW-UP) to remove Cr (VI) from simulated wastewater. The experiment was performed in two phases, i.e., Phase I and II, in the same system. In Phase I, initial Cr (VI) concentrations were varied between 5 and 200 mg/l at a fixed hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48 h, while in Phase II, the effect of HRT (24 h, 48 h, and 96 h) was studied at a fixed Cr (VI) concentration of 200 mg/L in the influent. At 24 h, HRT removal efficiencies were 90.20% for CW-P and 86.41% for CW-UP. However, at 96 h of HRT, the system showed nearly the same removal efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersion X-Ray spectroscopy analysis suggested the conversion of Cr (VI) to Cr (III) in soil precipitate and the translocation of Cr (VI) in plant tissues (Canna sps.). Moreover, microbial diversity profiling indicated that microbial diversity involved in pollutant removal differed in both systems. The phytotoxicity test clearly showed the decrease in toxicity level in the treated effluent, concluding the reusability of treated water. This exploratory study suggested that the CW can potentially remove a higher concentration of hexavalent chromium at longer HRT.

A comprehensive review on microbial lipid production from wastes: research updates and tendencies

Microbial lipids have recently attracted attention as an intriguing alternative for the biodiesel and oleochemical industries to achieve sustainable energy generation. However, large-scale lipid production remains limited due to the high processing costs. As multiple variables affect lipid synthesis, an up-to-date overview that will benefit researchers studying microbial lipids is necessary. In this review, the most studied keywords from bibliometric studies are first reviewed. Based on the results, the hot topics in the field were identified to be associated with microbiology studies that aim to enhance lipid synthesis and reduce production costs, focusing on the biological and metabolic engineering involved. The research updates and tendencies of microbial lipids were then analyzed in depth. In particular, feedstock and associated microbes, as well as feedstock and corresponding products, were analyzed in detail. Strategies for lipid biomass enhancement were also discussed, including feedstock adoption, value-added product synthesis, selection of oleaginous microbes, cultivation mode optimization, and metabolic engineering strategies. Finally, the environmental implications of microbial lipid production and possible research directions were presented.

Low-temperature phenol-degrading microbial agent: construction and mechanism

In this study, three cold-tolerant phenol-degrading strains, Pseudomonas veronii Ju-A1 (Ju-A1), Leifsonia naganoensis Ju-A4 (Ju-A4), and Rhodococcus qingshengii Ju-A6 (Ju-A6), were isolated. All three strains can produce cis, cis-muconic acid by ortho-cleavage of catechol at 12 ℃. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the proportional composition of low-temperature phenol-degrading microbiota. Degradation of phenol below 160 mg L^-1 by low-temperature phenol-degrading microbiota followed first-order degradation kinetics. When the phenol concentration was greater than 200 mg L^-1, the overall degradation trend was in accordance with the modified Gompertz model. The experiments showed that the microbial agent (three strains of low-temperature phenol-degrading bacteria were fermented separately and constructed in the optimal ratio) could completely degrade 200 mg L^-1 phenol within 36 h. The above construction method is more advantageous in bio-enhanced treatment of actual wastewater. Through the construction of microbial agents to enhance the degradation effect of phenol, it provides a feasible scheme for the biodegradation of phenol wastewater at low temperature and shows good application potential.

Enhanced photocatalytic decomposition of phenol in wastewater by using La-TiO2 nanocomposite

In this work, La-TiO₂ nanocomposite was synthesized by loading lanthanum onto TiO₂ and used for improving photodegradation of phenol in wastewater. The characterizations of La-TiO₂ demonstrated that the loading of La onto TiO₂ not only increased its adsorption light zone up to 470 nm but also decreased the band gap energy from 3.1 to 2.64 eV. Photoluminescence spectra of La-TiO₂ confirmed the enhancing separation rate between electron and hole, leading to improve photodegradation efficiency of phenol. The removal rate of phenol was influenced by solution pH and alkaline conditions could bring better removal efficiency. In presence of light, the photodegradation efficiency of phenol by TiO₂ was 64.1%, while it increased up to 93.4% by La-TiO₂ photocatalyst. La-TiO₂ nanocomposite was tested for five cycles and it showed only 13.8% dropping in the photodegradation efficiency of phenol. Besides, over 82% of phenol was removed from the wastewater sample by modified TiO₂, demonstrating the potential of La-TiO₂ photocatalyst for water pollution control.
