Abstract
Stressor-related disorders are a growing issue for both the individual and the organizations. The aim of the study was to analyze the strategies used by nurse managers to face crises. A systematic review of the literature, including qualitative studies was performed. Data were analyzed using framework-based synthesis and summarized into domains. Quality was evaluated using the JBI QARI Checklist. 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. Data collection was based on interviews, followed by questionnaires and focus groups. Good communication, organizational commitment and emotional support were the principal domains. Institutions should support nurse managers to cope with stress and make suggestions for adaptations.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT Mental health wards can feel unsafe. We know that patients and staff have different ideas about what makes a hospital ward safe or unsafe. Patients are often the first to know when the atmosphere on a ward becomes tense, but often, no one asks them for their views. Patients and staff are experts and should be included in discussions about how to make wards safer. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE We got together with some service users and staff, and made an app that helps patients to tell staff when they are not feeling safe on a mental health ward. We tried it out on six wards and we asked patients and staff what they thought. The app was easy to use and most people liked the look of it. Patients said staff did not talk with them enough and so they liked using the app. However, some staff said they could tell how patients were feeling without an app and so they did not need it. Ward managers told us that staff were often very busy and did not always have time to use the app. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This app could help staff know straightaway when patients do not feel safe on the ward, so that they can act quickly to calm things down. To make the most of the app, staff need to get used to it and bring it into ward routines. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Safety improvement on mental health wards is of international concern. It should incorporate patient perspectives. AIM Implementation and evaluation of 'WardSonar', a digital safety-monitoring tool for adult acute mental health wards, developed with stakeholders to communicate patients' real-time safety perceptions to staff. METHOD Six acute adult mental health wards in England implemented the tool in 2022. Evaluation over 10 weeks involved qualitative interviews (34 patients, 33 staff), 39 focused ethnographic observations, and analysis of pen portraits. RESULTS Implementation and evaluation of the WardSonar tool was feasible despite challenging conditions. Most patients valued the opportunity to communicate their immediate safety concerns, stating that staff had a poor understanding of them. Some staff said the WardSonar tool could help enhanced ward safety but recognised a need to incorporate its use into daily routines. Others said they did not need the tool to understand patients' safety concerns. DISCUSSION Foreseeable challenges, including staff ambivalence and practical issues, appeared intensified by the post-COVID-19 context. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The WardSonar tool could improve ward safety, especially from patients' perspectives. Future implementation could support staff to use the real-time data to inform proactive safety interventions.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an increase in the workload of nurses and changes in working conditions. Stress and the increase in workload during the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on nurses' intention to leave. This study aimed to determine the current rate of intention to leave the job among nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak by conducting a rapid systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODOLOGY/METHODS The review procedure was conducted by the PRISMA criteria. The researchers searched PubMed and Web of Science databases for studies providing the rate of nurses' intent to leave, published until 31 December 2021. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test, and publication bias was measured by Egger's test. RESULTS The estimated overall intent to leave the profession among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic was 31.7% (95% CI: 25%-39%) with significant heterogeneity (Q test: 188.9; p = 0.0001; I2 : %95.2; Tau2 : 0.225). Additionally, Egger's regression test suggested no publication bias for estimating the pooled rate of nurses' intent to leave during the COVID-19 outbreak. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Since the research is a meta-analysis study, a literature review model was used. Ethics committee approval was not obtained because the literature review did not directly affect humans and animals. CONCLUSION This study showed that approximately one-third of nurses working during the COVID-19 pandemic had thoughts about intending to leave their job. The findings indicate the need for strategies involving precautions and solutions to minimise the psychological impacts of COVID-19 among nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE In this period when the global nurse crisis exists, it is of great importance for institutions to retain their nurse workforce. There is an urgent need to prepare nurses to cope better with COVID-19 pandemic. Identification of risk factors for intention to leave could be a significant weapon giving nurses and healthcare systems the ability to response in a better way against the following COVID-19 waves in the near future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Australia has been confronted with a severe nursing deficit, making it difficult to maintain a strong healthcare workforce capable of meeting the mounting demands of healthcare organizations. AIMS This study aimed to understand how personal and organizational resources influence career optimism and job-related affective well-being of Australian nurses during a pandemic using the Conservation of Resource Theory. METHODS A cross-sectional online survey was emailed to 123 Australian nurses from January to February 2021. The survey consisted of self-reported measures, including mindfulness, career optimism, job-related affective well-being, personal and job resources measures, and the Dirty Dozen scale. Correlations, independent sample t-test, and a series of hierarchical regressions were conducted on the cross-sectional data with SPSS Version 27. The STROBE checklist was used to report the results. RESULTS Findings suggested that mindfulness, perceived supervisor support, and job autonomy were significant predictors of job-related well-being, whereas mindfulness, perceived supervisor support, and opportunities for professional growth contributed more to career optimism of nurses during a health crisis. Male nurses in this study reported significantly higher mindfulness, career optimism, and job-related well-being levels than female nurses. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION Developing mindfulness among nurses, allocating organizational resources to facilitate more supervisor support, and providing job autonomy may enhance career optimism and job-related well-being of nursing staff who work in disruptive and high-demand work environments such as those experienced during the COVID-19 health crisis. Supervisors should also facilitate and encourage nurses to reflect and be mindful of their behaviors with their peers and patients which can help to reduce exploitative or arrogant behaviors in the workplace.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurse managers play an important role in coordinating the multidisciplinary teamwork, which is specifically important in emergency and crises situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this qualitative study is twofold: (1) to explore the experiences of the Intensive care units (ICU) nurse managers regarding their work during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) to analyse what implications might be provided based on experiences of nurse managers for future possible epidemiological crises. METHODS In-depth phone interviews were conducted to explore the experiences of ward managers-nurses (n = 15) working in different hospitals across Poland. Interviews were taped and transcribed verbatim, and then qualitatively analysed. RESULTS Three main categories were identified: (1) Challenge of working with the unknown, (2) Nurse managers' expectations, and (3) Methods of coping and received support. The COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected the work of ICU nurse managers and uncovered the malfunctioning of the healthcare system. CONCLUSION It is important to improve the knowledge and competence of hospital management personnel through exercises and in-service training on how to handle emergencies in order to improve the management of healthcare facilities, increase the safety of patients and employees, and the quality of healthcare.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant challenges for frontline healthcare workers' (FHW), raising many mental health and wellbeing concerns for this cohort. To facilitate identification of risk and protective factors to inform treatment and interventions, this study investigated key predictors of psychological distress and subjective wellbeing in FHWs. Methods During the Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic (January 2022), Victorian (Australia) doctors, nurses, allied health and non-medical staff from Emergency Departments, Intensive Care units, Aged Care, Hospital In The Home, and COVID Wards completed a cross-sectional survey consisting of the Kessler 6 item (Psychological Distress), Personal Wellbeing Index (Subjective Wellbeing), Coronavirus Health Impact Survey tool (COVID-19 related factors) and occupational factors. Multivariable linear regressions were used to evaluate unadjusted and adjusted associations. Relative weight analysis was used to compare and identify key predictors. Results Out of 167 participants, 18.1% screened positive for a probable mental illness and a further 15.3% screened positive for low wellbeing. Key risk factors for greater psychological distress included COVID infection worries, relationship stress and younger age. For both psychological distress and lower wellbeing, health status and supervisor support were key protective factors, while infection risks were key risk factors. Only positive changes in relationship quality was protective of lower wellbeing. Conclusion This study highlights the significance of social determinants and individual level factors alongside work related factors, in influencing FHWs' mental health and wellbeing during public health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest that future interventions and supports should take a more holistic approach that considers work, social and individual level factors when supporting FHWs' mental health and wellbeing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This integrative review aims to synthesize literature and evaluate the relationship between formalized nursing leader orientation programs and nursing leadership engagement. BACKGROUND The onboarding and orientation of new nursing leaders should be more supported in healthcare organizations. Research supports that dedicated leadership onboarding and orientation programs increase nursing leadership engagement and retention. METHODS This review was based on a literature review using PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science using MeSH keywords and associated terms, including nursing leadership or nurse manager, engagement, and onboarding or orientation. RESULTS Incorporating formalized orientation and onboarding programs for newly hired or promoted nursing leaders improves leadership engagement. Programs should include a mentorship program to pair new leaders with experienced leaders to promote interprofessional collaboration and incorporate an advanced curriculum focusing on transformational leadership practices that increase nursing leadership engagement. CONCLUSIONS Implementing formalized onboarding and orientation programs for nursing leaders, focusing on mentorship, interprofessional collaboration, and transformational leadership practices can enhance nursing leadership engagement and retention. Healthcare organizations should prioritize implementing these programs to enhance nursing leadership engagement and retention.

Abstract
Background Healthcare systems had an exceptionally difficult time during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Nurse managers in particular made enormous contributions to ensuring the safety of patients and front-line nurses while being under excessive psychological stress. However, little is known about their experiences during this time. Objective The aim of this study was thus to assess the level of stress overload and psychological feelings of nurse managers during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A mixed methods sequential explanatory design study with non-random convenience sampling was performed, following the STROBE and COREQ checklists. The study was conducted at the Affiliated Dongyang Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University, with data collected from six provinces in southern China (Zhejiang, Hubei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hunan and Jiangxi) during March 2020 and June 2020. A total of 966 nurse managers completed the Stress Overload Scale and Work-Family Support Scale. In addition, a nested sample of nurse managers participated in semi-structured face-to-face interviews. The data were then analyzed using qualitative content analysis, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results The quantitative results showed that nurse managers experienced a moderate level of stress load. There was a significant negative correlation between work-family support and stress load (r = -0.551, p < 0.01). Concerns about protecting front-line nurses and work-family support were the main factors affecting the stress load, which accounted for 34.0% of the total variation. Qualitative analysis identified four main thematic analyses that explained stress load: (1) great responsibility and great stress, (2) unprecedented stress-induced stress response, (3) invisible stress: the unknown was even more frightening, and (4) stress relief from love and support. Taken together these findings indicate that concern about protecting front-line nurses and negative work-family support of nurse managers were the main factors causing stress overload. Conclusion Implementing measures focused on individual psychological adjustment combined with community and family support and belongingness is one potential strategy to reduce psychological stress among nurse managers.

Abstract
Background Working as a front-line worker during a pandemic is a unique situation that requires a supportive work environment. An informed understanding of nurses' and midwives' workplace experiences during a pandemic, such as COVID-19, may enable better preparation and targeted support for future pandemics at an individual, organisational, and policy level. Aim The aim of this study was to explore nurses' and midwives' workplace experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic response. Methods A cross-sectional online survey consisting of open-ended questions was conducted with a convenience sample of nurses and midwives (n = 1003) working in New South Wales Health hospital settings, in Australia. Open-ended questions were analysed using content analysis. Results Five themes were identified; 'organisational communication', 'workplace support', 'availability of personal protective equipment', 'flexible working', and 'new ways of working'. Nurses' and midwives' workplace experiences during COVID-19 were influenced by leaders who were perceived to be adaptive, authentic, responsive, transparent, and visible. While many expressed a number of workplace challenges, including access to personal protective equipment, there was opportunity to explore, develop, and evaluate new and alternate models of care and working arrangements. Conclusion It is important that nurses and midwives are supported and well prepared to cope during pandemics in the workplace. Organisational leadership and timely dissemination of transparent pandemic plans may support nurses' adaptive workplace experiences.

Abstract
Background Nurses have crucial roles in caring for patients and preventing the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, nurse managers have a prominent role during the pandemic, being responsible for the support and training of the nursing team to ensure quality care. While performing their duties in this time of fear and uncertainty, nurse managers face several challenges. Aim To identify the challenges faced by nurse managers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods It is an integrative literature review whose search for articles was carried out in Medline, PubMed and Scopus. Qualitative content analysis was used. Results Twelve primary research studies were included. Four themes emerged: (1) Workplace demands, (2) Impacts on physical and psychological health, (3) Coping measures and resilience and (4) Recommendations to better support nurse managers in times of crisis. Nurse managers had their roles expanded or completely changed, and they experienced many pressures and stressors in the workplace. Nurse managers also faced physical and psychological health problems. Nurse managers drew on experience; management skills; social media applications; support from family, colleagues and hospital administrators; training, and continuing education to solve the problems that emerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organisations should use collaborative, inclusive and participatory practices for better crisis management. Conclusions Knowing the experiences of nurse managers during the pandemic period may help health institutions and policymakers better prepare for emergencies.

Abstract
AIM This study was conducted in three phases. Phase 1 aimed to adapt the Cancer Information Overload Scale and conduct content validity testing. Phase 2 aimed to conduct factorial validity testing of the scale. Phase 3 aimed to assess information overload and the sources of information used by nurses and midwives to keep up-to-date about COVID-19. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey of nurses and midwives working in a metropolitan Local Health District in Sydney, Australia, was conducted from May to June 2020. METHODS Adaptation of the Cancer Information Overload Scale and content validity of the modified scale (as the Pandemic Information Overload Scale) was undertaken by an expert panel comprising of senior nurses and researchers. Factorial validity and reliability of the Pandemic Information Overload Scale were evaluated using exploratory factor analyses using one subsample of the data. Using the second subsample of the data, information overload and sources of information used by nurses and midwives to keep up-to-date about COVID-19 were examined. RESULTS The Pandemic Information Overload Scale is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring information overload among nurses during a pandemic. Its internal consistency was high (α = 0.81, M = 3.84). CONCLUSION The 8-item PIO scale is a brief, reliable and psychometrically sound instrument for measuring nurses' and midwives' perceptions of information overload during COVID-19. Mean scores across this study indicated that participants were experiencing above average information overload. Implementing strategies to reduce this overload would optimize clinical decision making and promote patient safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization estimates that between 80,000 and 180,000 medical personnel perished as a result of COVID-19. Although studies about nurses' organizational commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic have been conducted, the sources of motivations and resilience strategies of nurses in providing a quality healthcare service amidst the COVID-19 pandemic have yet to be explored. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate how motivation and resilience influence nurses to serve and cater to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A sequential exploratory mixed approach was used in this study between July and August 2022. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivations scale (WEIMS), and Garbee and Killacky's Intent to Stay Scale (GKISS) were used to measure resilience, motivation, and intention to stay, among 50 nurses within Metro Manila. Quantitative data were analyzed using quantile regression, while qualitative data from eight participants were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The majority of the nurses were working 12 hours and above (52%) and earning a bi-weekly income of PHP 15,001 to 20,000 (96%). The GKISS scores of most respondents indicated their likelihood of remaining in their current profession was moderately low (Mdn = 12.5; IQR = 12-14). It was also found that there was no sufficient statistical evidence to conclude that intention to stay was associated with resilience (p = 0.914) and work motivation (p = 0.560). The qualitative strand of this study explored the significant influences of motivation, resilience strategies, and sources of intention to stay among Filipino nurses while facing the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary motivations of nurses lie in family, passion for work, and career development, while the resilience strategies include adaptiveness, time management skills, and self-fulfillments. On the other hand, the intent to stay greatly lies in serving the people and the country. CONCLUSION This study concludes that positive and negative resilience and motivations from different facets of the social life of Filipino nurses, including passion, familial ties, patient care, and faith are the antecedents influencing the intention to serve in the healthcare service. In terms of staying for an extended period in a nursing career, the study found that institutionalized interventions, adequate compensation and benefits, and a good workplace are determinants of staying longer in the Philippines as Filipino nurses.

Abstract
AIM We aim to identify measures implemented by hospital nursing directors early in the COVID-19 pandemic and enabling factors. BACKGROUND Managerial factors affect nurses' physical and mental health and willingness to work, especially early in a pandemic. METHOD We used multiple-case study of 15 hospitals, comparing management approaches by interviewing 28 nursing directors and their assistants from August to December 2020. RESULTS Hospitals that accepted COVID-19 patients and hospitals that unexpectedly experienced clusters underwent a nursing provision system organization phase, followed by an adjustment phase to maintain nursing organization function. Two factors aided measure implementation: an emergency system and staff protection policies. CONCLUSION Early epidemic management strategies apply across contexts. The hospital's basic attitude is key to effective implementation of the strategies. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT The results suggest that hospitals, nursing directors and nurses can each prepare for future emerging infectious disease epidemics.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 has brought greater workload pressures to the medical field, such as medical staff being required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). While PPE can protect the safety of staff during the pandemic, it can also accelerate the accumulation of fatigue among operators. Objective This study explores the influence of different protection states on the mental fatigue of nurses. Methods In this study, 10 participants (5 males and 5 females) were randomly selected among applicants to monitor mental fatigue during the nurses’ daily work in four different PPE states (low temperature and low protection; low temperature and high protection; high temperature and low protection; high temperature and high protection). The NASA subjective mental fatigue scale was used for subjective evaluation. Reaction time, attention concentration, attention distribution, memory, and main task completion time were used for objective evaluation. Results The results demonstrated a significant difference in the effects of different protection states on mental fatigue. The state of high temperature and high protection had the greatest influence on mental fatigue, the state of low temperature and low protection had the least, and states of high (low) temperature and low (high) protection had intermediate effects on mental fatigue. Furthermore, the correlation between the subjective and objective fatigue indices was analyzed using a multiple regression model. Conclusion This study clarified the influence of different protection states on the mental fatigue of nurses, and verified that nurses require more time and energy to complete the same work as before under high protection states. It provides a basis for evaluating the mental fatigue of nurses in the unique period of the COVID-19 pandemic and specific ideas for optimizing the nursing process.

Abstract
AIM The study was conducted to understand the experiences of nurse managers with regard to the difficulties and opportunities they encountered during the pandemic. BACKGROUND Although many studies have been carried out to understand how nurses were affected in the COVID-19 pandemic, there are few studies that treat the experiences of nurse managers. METHODS In this qualitative descriptive study with 19 nurse managers working in pandemic management at a university hospital in Turkey during the first three waves of the pandemic, data were collected between April and July 2021 using the semi-structured interview method. Content analysis was performed to analyse the data. RESULTS Six themes were identified with respect to the experiences of nurse managers during the pandemic. These themes were initial reactions to the crisis, ineffective crisis management, excessive workload, the moral burden in decision-making, support of colleagues and other multidisciplinary team and nurse manager empowerment. CONCLUSIONS The nurse managers had difficulties in their managerial roles during the pandemic. However, they also viewed the crisis as an opportunity because they were able to note the deficiencies in management at all levels of the hospital and their leadership and decision-making roles took on more importance. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Nurse managers may use the results of this study to be prepared for the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and any other emergency circumstances that they may have to face in the future.

Abstract
AIM To explore the moral distress experiences of chief nurse officers during the COVID-19 pandemic. BACKGROUND Moral distress has emerged as a challenge for nurses ad nurse leaders, revealing the need for health professionals and health care managers to examine, understand and deal with moral distress un Nurse leaders. METHODS A descriptive phenomenological study with content analysis. RESULTS Thirteen chief/assistant nurse officers were interviewed, and four themes were identified: being a manager in the pandemic, situations that cause moral distress, effects of moral distress, and factors that reduce moral distress CONCLUSION: Faced with various expectations, such as the management of unusual and uncertain processes, and the management of the psychological responses of both employees and themselves, chief nurse officers struggled significantly to maintain their moral integrity and experienced moral distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Extraordinary situations such as pandemics have factors which led to moral distress for a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Healthcare systems in which nurse managers are excluded from decision-making processes, have a traditional hierarchical structure that ignores CNOs professional autonomy, contribute to the development of moral distress. Therefore, CNOs should engage in self-reflection to recognize their own moral distress experiences, examine the existing health system to identify the factors that cause moral distress, and take actions to implement changes to eliminate these factors. To cope with moral distress, CNOs should also improve their communication skills, team collaboration skills, the use of scientific knowledge, and take responsibility in their managerial role.

Abstract
Introduction Increasing evidence suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the mental health of health professionals, including radiographers. Less is known about the effect of the pandemic on the mental health of radiography managers. Radiography managers have led their teams through the pandemic, making unpopular decisions to safeguard staff and patients. This study explores radiography managers’ perceptions regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of themselves and their staff. Methods Ethical approval was obtained from the NHS Research Ethics Committee (ID 287032). Eleven interviews were conducted with therapeutic and diagnostic radiography managers between March–April 2021. Written information was also included from a paediatric diagnostic radiography manager. Data was analysed independently by 2 researchers using thematic analysis. Results Three central themes emerged: 1) Factors perceived to have negatively influenced mental health, which included changing PPE guidance, restructuring of work conditions, social isolation, challenges to patient care and lack of quality vacation leave. 2) Factors perceived to have positively influenced mental health, which included witnessing staff resilience and team camaraderie. 3) Support provided for mental health. Conclusion Managers felt that they had implemented appropriate strategies to support their staff throughout the first year of the pandemic and expressed feeling responsible for the wellbeing of their staff. Strong empathy was evident towards staff and their experiences. Despite the availability of mental health support services, managers felt that resources were underutilised by radiography teams. Implications for practice Managers should be proactive in communicating their appreciation for their staff in an era where remote working can add to disconnect between staff and management. Mental health support services should be promoted and continually reviewed, to ensure that appropriate support services are maintained.
