Microplastic appraisal of soil, water, ditch sediment and airborne dust: The case of agricultural systems

Microplastics in different municipal solid waste treatment and disposal systems: Do they pose environmental risks?

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a significant worldwide environmental and health challenge. Municipal solid waste (MSW) can be an important source of MPs in the environment if treated and disposed of inappropriately, causing potential ecological risks. MSW treatment and disposal methods have been gradually shifting from landfilling/dumping to more sustainable approaches, such as incineration or composting. However, previous studies on MP characteristics in different MSW treatment and disposal systems have mainly focused either on landfills/dumpsites or composts. The lack of knowledge of multiple MSW treatment and disposal systems makes it difficult to ensure effective MP pollution control during MSW treatment and disposal. Therefore, this study systematically summarizes the occurrence of MPs in different MSW treatment and disposal systems (landfill/dumpsite, compost, and incineration) on the Eurasian scale, and discusses the factors that influence MPs in individual MSW treatment and disposal systems. In addition, the paper assesses the occurrence of MPs in the surrounding environment of MSW treatment and disposal systems and their ecological risks using the species sensitivity distribution approach. The study also highlights recommendations for future research, to more comprehensively describe the occurrence and fate of MPs during MSW treatment and disposal processes, and to develop appropriate pollution control measures to minimize MP pollution.

Source-specific probabilistic risk assessment of microplastics in soils applying quality criteria and data alignment methods

The risk characterization of microplastics (MP) in soil is challenging due to the non-alignment of existing exposure and effect data. Therefore, we applied data alignment methods to assess the risks of MP in soils subject to different sources of MP pollution. Our findings reveal variations in MP characteristics among sources, emphasizing the need for source-specific alignments. To assess the reliability of the data, we applied Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) screening tools. Risk assessment was carried out probabilistically, considering uncertainties in data alignments and effect thresholds. The Hazardous Concentrations for 5% (HC5) of the species were significantly higher compared to earlier studies and ranged between 4.0 × 107 and 2.3 × 108 particles (1-5000 µm)/kg of dry soil for different MP sources and ecologically relevant metrics. The highest risk was calculated for soils with MP entering via diffuse and unspecified local sources, i.e., "background pollution". However, the source with the highest proportion of high-risk values was sewage, followed by background pollution and mulching. Notably, locations exceeding the risk threshold obtained low scores in the QA/QC assessment. No risks were observed for soils with compost. To improve future risk assessments, we advise to primarily test environmentally relevant MP mixtures and adhere to strict quality criteria.

Investigating the impacts of airborne dust on herbicide performance on Amaranthus retroflexus

Dust pollution poses environmental hazards, affecting agriculture through reduced sunlight exposure, photosynthesis, crop yields, and food security. This study explores the interference of dust pollution on herbicide efficacy to control weeds in a semi-arid region. In a factorial experiment conducted in 2019 and replicated in 2020, the interaction of dust and various herbicide applications, including bentazon, sulfosulfuron, tribenuron-methyl, aminopyralid + florasulam, foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron + thiencarbazone, 2,4-D + MCPA, and acetochlor, in controlling Amaranthus retroflexus L. were assessed. Dust induced a 9.2% reduction in the total chlorophyll content of A. retroflexus, while herbicide application independently led to a 67.5% decrease. Contrary to expectations, herbicides performed better in dust, except bentazon, which caused a 28% drop in plant height and a 29% decrease in total biomass compared to non-dust conditions. Both herbicides and dust exerted suppressive effects on A. retroflexus's leaf and stem weights and overall biomass. Despite dust presence, tribenuron-methyl (95.8%), aminopyralid + florasulam (95.7%), sulfosulfuron (96.5%), and foramsulfuron + iodosulfuron + thiencarbazone (97.8%) effectively controlled A. retroflexus. These findings indicate that dust's effect on herbicide efficacy is herbicide-dependent but except bentazon, dust generally increased herbicide efficacy and amplified the control of A. retroflexus.

Removal of microplastics from water by coagulation of cationic-modified starch: An environmentally friendly solution

Microplastics (MPs) pose a potential risk to aquatic ecosystems, and there is a growing demand to alleviate the contamination of MPs. Here, we introduce cationic-modified starch (CS) as an eco-friendly bio-coagulant for removing MPs from water. CS with varying degrees of substitution was synthesized and characterized, and its performance in removing MPs was evaluated under different MP sizes, types, and aging, as well as various water conditions. The results indicated that CS efficiently removed MPs, achieving an average removal rate of 65.33 % for polystyrene particles, with higher removal rates for larger, high-density, and aged MPs. The efficiency of CS remained consistent across a wide range of water pH values, but was significantly reduced in the presence of kaolin clay or/and humic acid. The removal efficiency of CS for MPs was enhanced by the non-ionic surfactant, Tween 20, but inhibited by the anionic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. In addition, CS could concurrently remove both MPs and phenanthrene, as a typical water contaminant. Moreover, the applicability of CS was demonstrated in natural water samples from the Ecological Demonstration Zone of the Yangtze River Delta, China, with an average removal rate of 60.13 ± 3.15 %. Taken together, this study offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach for the removal of MPs from water, demonstrating CS has significant application potential as a sustainable solution to mitigate microplastic pollution.

Atmospheric microplastic transport and deposition to urban and pristine tropical locations in Southeast Asia

Atmospheric microplastic transport is an important delivery pathway with the deposition of microplastics to ecologically important regions raising environmental concerns. Investigating atmospheric delivery pathways and their deposition rates in different ecosystems is necessary to understanding its global impact. In this study, atmospheric deposition was collected at three sites in Malaysia, two urban and one pristine, covering the Northeast and Southwest monsoons to quantify the role of this pathway in Southeast Asia. Air mass back trajectories showed long-range atmospheric transport of microplastics to all sites with atmospheric deposition varying from 114 to 689 MP/m2/day. For the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, monsoonal season influenced microplastic transport and deposition rate with peak microplastic deposition during the Northeast monsoon due to higher wind speed. MP morphology combined with size fractionation and plastic type at the coastal sites indicated a role for long-range marine transport of MPs that subsequently provided a local marine source to the atmosphere at the coastal sites.

Potential transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through microplastics in sewage: A wastewater-based epidemiological review

In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2, there is an urgent need to identify and investigate the various pathways of transmission. In addition to contact and aerosol transmission of the virus, this review investigated the possibility of its transmission via microplastics found in sewage. Wastewater-based epidemiological studies on the virus have confirmed its presence and persistence in both influent sewage as well as treated ones. The hypothesis behind the study is that the huge amount of microplastics, especially Polyvinyl Chloride and Polyethylene particles released into the open waters from sewage can become a good substrate and vector for microbes, especially Polyvinyl Chloride and Polyethylene particles, imparting stability to microbes and aiding the "plastisphere" formation. A bibliometric analysis highlights the negligence of research toward plastispheres and their presence in sewage. The ubiquity of microplastics and their release along with the virus into the open waters increases the risk of viral plastispheres. These plastispheres may be ingested by aquatic organisms facilitating reverse zoonosis and the commercial organisms already reported with accumulating microplastics through the food chain poses a risk to human populations as well. Reliance of high population density areas on open waters served by untreated sewage in economically less developed countries might bring back viral transmission.

Spatial distribution characteristics and migration of microplastics in surface water, groundwater and sediment in karst areas: The case of Yulong River in Guilin, Southwest China

Karst regions, due to their unique topography, may be more susceptible to contaminants such as microplastics from other ecosystems. However, few studies reported the occurrence of microplastics in karst areas. Here, we investigated the abundance of microplastics in surface water, sediments and groundwater. In addition, their spatial distribution characteristics and migration were also analyzed in a typical karst area, Yulong River, Guilin, China. Microplastic pollution was found in the sediments, surface water and especially groundwater in Yulong River. The abundance of microplastics was 0-4 items/L, 247-1708 items/kg and 0-4 items/L in surface water, sediments and groundwater, respectively. Microplastics in surface water and groundwater were fiber-based, while those in sediments were fragment-based. Polypropylene (PP), Polystyrene (PS) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are dominant microplastic types in Yulong River. Moreover, the abundance of microplastic pollution in different functional areas ranked as follows: living area > agricultural area > landscape area. Clustering analysis showed that disposable tableware and plastic bags used in tourism activities might be the main source of microplastics. More importantly, our findings suggested that microplastics in groundwater could be the result of hydraulic exchange between groundwater and surface water in karst areas, rather than soil infiltration. These findings provided us with a further understanding of the pollution of microplastics in karst rivers.

Effects of irrigation on the fate of microplastics in typical agricultural soil and freshwater environments in the upper irrigation area of the Yellow River

Agricultural activities are among the most significant sources of microplastics (MPs) in water. However, few studies have explored the effect of irrigation on the fate of MPs in agricultural systems. This study investigated the distribution of MPs in agricultural soil, surface water, and sediment of adjacent rivers, as well as the "MP communities" in various environments before and after irrigation in a typical agricultural irrigation area of the Yellow River. MPs were detected in all of the examined sites. The number of MPs in surface water and sediment increased after irrigation, whereas those in the surface soil of croplands decreased. In the vertical direction, irrigation accelerated the migration of MPs (< 100 µm) deep into the soil. The vertical mobility of fibers in soil was faster than that of other types of MPs. Moreover, irrigation decreased the correlation between soil properties and MPs in soils. MP community analysis indicated that irrigation enhanced the differences between MP communities among adjacent environments. Collectively, our findings confirmed that river water irrigation caused secondary MP pollution in the soil environment and accelerated MP pollution in deep soil. Therefore, this study provides a theoretical basis for the development of strategies for MP pollution control in agricultural soil.

Valoration of the Synthetic Antioxidant Tris-(Diterbutyl-Phenol)-Phosphite (Irgafos P-168) from Industrial Wastewater and Application in Polypropylene Matrices to Minimize Its Thermal Degradation

Industrial wastewater from petrochemical processes is an essential source of the synthetic phenolic phosphite antioxidant (Irgafos P-168), which negatively affects the environment. For the determination and analysis of Irgafos P-168, DSC, HPLC-MS, and FTIR methodologies were used. Solid phase extraction (SPE) proved to be the best technique for extracting Irgafos from wastewater. HPLC-MS and SPE determined the repeatability, reproducibility, and linearity of the method and the SPE of the standards and samples. The relative standard deviations, errors, and correlation coefficients for the repeatability and reproducibility of the calibration curves were less than 4.4% and 4.2% and greater than 0.99955, respectively. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), using the Fisher method with confidence in 95% of the data, did not reveal significant differences between the mentioned parameters. The removal of the antioxidant from the wastewater by SPE showed recovery percentages higher than 91.03%, and the chemical characterization of this antioxidant by FTIR spectroscopy, DSC, TGA, and MS showed it to be structurally the same as the Irgafos P-168 molecule. The recovered Irgafos was added to the polypropylene matrix, significantly improving its oxidation times. An OIT analysis, performed using DSC, showed that the recovered Irgafos-blended polypropylene (PP) demonstrated oxidative degradation at 8 min. With the addition of the Irgafos, the oxidation time was 13 min. This increases the polypropylene’s useful life and minimizes the environmental impact of the wastewater.
