Pupils' Attitudes toward Inclusive Education

The presented research is a study of the attitudes of adolescents toward individuals with disabilities and a description of the level of knowledge about this issue among a selected group of adolescents. The study is focused on the school social environment, specifically on pupils without disabilities and their attitudes toward pupils with disabilities, which is one of the factors influencing their school success. The target group was 1806 pupils between the ages of 11 and 16 from the entire Czech Republic, approached by random selection. The research tool for the quantitative approach was a questionnaire developed by the authors of this article. The questionnaire section with open questions served for the qualitative part of the research. The results show that 70% of the respondents have basic knowledge about people with disabilities. Furthermore, it was shown that these adolescents have an overall positive attitude toward people with disabilities. This attitude is statistically significantly better among the girls than the boys, and the girls are also more open to discussing individuals with disabilities. At the same time, even if attitudes are positive, they still depend on the type of disability. The greatest uncertainty or discomfort is manifested when interacting with individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Access to inclusive sanitation and participation in sanitation programs for people with disabilities in Indonesia

Access to inclusive sanitation for people with disabilities (PWDs) remains a global challenge, including in Indonesia, where 10-15% of its population is disabled. Inclusive sanitation facilities can be achieved when PWDs are involved in the sanitation-related decision-making process, e.g., designing toilet that meets their needs. This study aims to investigate the situation of the sanitation facility in houses of PWDs and understand knowledge, attitude, and practices related to PWD participation in sanitation programs using a case study in two provinces in Indonesia: Nusa Tenggara Barat and Nusa Tenggara Timur. Quantitative data were taken from 129 PWD households, and qualitative data were from in-depth interviews with relevant stakeholders. The latter was presented in a causal loop diagram. Less than 5% had inclusive sanitation at home, mainly due to no supportive tools and bins. The knowledge levels related to sanitation and PWDs participation in sanitation programs were relatively low. Economic condition was one of the barriers for PWDs to participate in the sanitation program. Statistical analysis found that a higher household head education level was associated with a more positive attitude and higher PWD participation in sanitation programs. Although Indonesian law supports PWD participation, the implementation remains a challenge. This study also underlines the need for capacity building in facilitating PWDs' involvement in sanitation programs and community meetings. Finally, barriers to PWD participation can come from different levels and actors, e.g., the family, the community, the district level, and the PWD itself, indicating the need to involve actors at all levels to enhance PWD participation in the sanitation program that leads to inclusive sanitation facilities for all groups.

The relationship of inclusive climate and peers' attitude on children with disabilities in China: A mediating role of empathy

Objective

Peer attitude towards children with disabilities can significantly impact on the successful implementation of inclusive education. The current study examined the attitude of Chinese students toward peers with disabilities in relation to inclusive climate and empathy.

Method

A total of 392 typically developing students (aging from 10 to 17 years old, with average age of 12.7) in primary and middle schools participated in the study by reporting the Inclusive Climate Scale, Peers Attitude to Students with Disabilities Scale, and Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale.

Results

We found that students held a neutral attitude to peers with disabilities, and girls were more acceptable than boys. There were positive relationships among inclusive climate, empathy and attitude to classmates with disabilities. The mediation analysis showed that empathy played a partial mediation role between inclusive climate and the peers' attitude towards children with disabilities.

Conclusion

Implications for improving students' attitude on peers with disabilities were discussed in the paper.

Development and initial validation of a scale for the situational recognition of the basic psychological needs

Centered on the Basic Psychological Needs Theory, recent theoretical underpinnings were used and initial empirical processes were initiated to conceptualize, develop and validate a new questionnaire about how teachers shape instructional goals. In a first exploratory study, 188 university graduates and 211 in-service teachers from both the general and special education domains were recruited to recognize the basic psychological needs of an adolescent with physical and mild cognitive disability presented in a short video vignette. In the second confirmatory study, the sample consisted of 239 in-service teachers. According to the results, the new instrument demonstrated acceptable psychometric qualities. For instance, the goodness-of-fit indices CFI and NNFI were both good (1.00) in the confirmatory factor analysis. In both studies, the recognition of the basic psychological needs was involved in a series of statistically significant correlations with participants’ intrinsic life goals (R ≥ .34), state empathy (R ≥ .38) and intrinsic instructional goals (R ≥ .51). This preliminary research suggested that participants integrated the new concept in their intrinsic motivational style. Overall, the results highlight the importance of recognizing the basic psychological needs by including this construct both in research and practice.
