Association between resting heart rate, VO2max and carotid intima-media thickness in middle-aged men

Associations between Multiple Health Indicators and Carotid Artery Intima-Media Thickness in A Healthy and Active Elderly Population

The purpose of this study was to examine correlations between health indicators (age, BMI, blood pressure (BP), functional strength (FS), handgrip strength, and predicted VO2 max) and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in an active 50 years+ population. Study participants' mean cIMT was also compared to the cIMT mean of the general population. Health screenings were conducted on 1818 participants at the Huntsman World Senior Games from 2016 to 2019. Pearson's correlations, Spearman's correlations, and ANOVA were performed using SPSS. Weak but significant correlations were evident between cIMT and age (r = 0.283, p < 0.001), systolic BP (r = 0.253, p = 0.001), diastolic BP (r = 0.074, p = 0.016), weight (r = 0.170, p < 0.001), height (r = 0.153, p < 0.001), handgrip L (r = 0.132, p < 0.001), handgrip R (r = 0.074, p < 0.029), and BMI (r = 0.07, p = 0.029); non-significant correlations were evident with predicted VO2 max (r = -0.035, p = 0.382), and FS (r = -0.025, p = 0.597). When controlling for age, systolic BP, and sex, only handgrip L (r = 0.225, p = 0.014) was significantly correlated with cIMT. Mean cIMT for this cohort was lower across all sexes and age-matched groups (cIMT = 0.6967 mm (±0.129)). Physical activity is linked to reduced cIMT. Most health-related indicators in this study were significantly but weakly correlated with cIMT. Additional research is needed before common indicators can be used as a surrogate for cIMT and CVD risk. Results from this study can provide clinicians with additional information to reduce CVD risk through modifiable risk factors. Classic CVD risk factors such as systolic BP and BMI should be considered in patients regardless of lifestyle.

Characterization of the Sideritis scardica Extract SidTea+TM and Its Effect on Physiological Profile, Metabolic Health and Redox Biomarkers in Healthy Adults: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

This study aimed to characterize a Sideritis scardica extract (SidTea+TM) and investigate its effect on the physiological profile, metabolic health and redox status in healthy individuals. The chemical profile and antioxidant potential of the SidTea+TM extract were evaluated by UPLC-HRMS analysis and in vitro cell-free methods. Twenty-eight healthy adults participated in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Participants consumed 1500 mg/day of SidTea+TM or a placebo for 4 weeks. At baseline and post-supplementation, participants were assessed for their anthropometric and physiological profile and provided a resting blood sample. SidTea+TM decreased (p < 0.05) systolic blood pressure (-10.8 mmHg), mean arterial pressure (-4.5 mmHg), resting heart rate (-3.1 bpm) and handgrip strength of the non-dominant limb (-0.8 kg) whereas the placebo decreased (p < 0.05) handgrip strength of the dominant (-5.8 kg) and non-dominant (-3.2 kg) limb. SidTea+TM also resulted in an increase (p < 0.05) in estimated VO2max (+1.1 mL/kg/min) and a reduction (p < 0.05) in γ-GT and SGPT enzymatic activity in serum (-3.7 and -3.3 U/L, respectively). Finally, SidTea+TM increased (p < 0.001) total antioxidant capacity and decreased (p < 0.05) lipid peroxidation levels in plasma. These results indicate that SidTea+TM is a potent and safe to use antioxidant that can elicit positive changes in indices of blood pressure, cardiorespiratory capacity, liver metabolism, and redox status in healthy adults over a 4-week supplementation period.

Co-Creating a Feasible, Acceptable and Safe Home-Based High-Intensity Interval Training Programme for People with Parkinson's: The HIIT-Home4Parkinson's Study

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is useful and feasible for some people with Parkinson's (PwP), although long-term adherence may be problematic. If practical, undertaking HIIT in the home setting could be a way to encourage continued participation. However, no home-based HIIT programme has been developed for this population. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to co-create a feasible, accessible, and safe home-based HIIT programme for PwP, including intervention components and logic model. This supports the longer term aim to assess the practicality and utility of home-based HIIT for PwP. The study included three stages. Firstly, an initial HIIT programme and logic model proposal was developed based on existing evidence. This was refined through an iterative, co-creative process of focus groups, exercise testing and interviews involving end-users and relevant stakeholders. Finally, a draft intervention was produced with further co-creator input. During the iterative process, five focus groups, 10 exercise testing sessions and 10 post exercise interviews were undertaken, involving academic researchers, 6 PwP, one family member and two clinicians. These co-creators developed HIIT-Home4Parkinson's (HH4P), a 12-week thrice weekly home-based HIIT programme for PwP based on adaptability, individualisation, and remote support. Despite methodological limitations within the development process, the co-created HH4P programme could be feasible, safe, and useful for PwP. A feasibility study should now be undertaken to address remaining uncertainties prior to a full trial.

Temporal Skin Temperature as an Indicator of Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessed with Selected Methods

The aim of this study was to determine whether there are associations between cardiovascular fitness (and aerobic capacity) and changes in temporal skin temperature during and after a single bout of high-intensity exercise. Twenty-three men with varying levels of physical activity (VO2max: 59.03 ± 11.19 (mL/kg/min), body mass 71.5 ± 10.4 (kg), body height 179 ± 8 (cm)) participated in the study. Each subject performed an incremental test and, after a 48-h interval, a 110%Pmax power test combined with an analysis of the thermal parameters, heart rate recovery and heart rate variability. Thermal radiation density from the body surface (temple) was measured using a Sonel KT384 thermal imaging camera immediately after warm-up (Tb), immediately after exercise (Te) and 120 sec after the end of exercise (Tr). The differences between measurements were then calculated. The correlation analysis between the thermal and cardiovascular function parameters during the recovery period showed strong positive associations between the Tr-Te difference and measures of cardiovascular fitness (50 < r < 69, p < 0.05). For example, the correlation coefficient between Tr-Te and VO2max reached 0.55 and between Tr-Te and Pmax reached 0.68. The results obtained indicate that the measurement of temporal temperature during and after an intense 3-min bout of exercise can be used to assess aerobic physical capacity and cardiovascular fitness.

Relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and preoperative evaluation findings in patients with morbid obesity undergoing sleeve gastrectomy: A cross-sectional study

Evaluating various parameters, including preoperative cardiorespiratory fitness markers, is critical for patients with morbid obesity. Also, clinicians should prescribe suitable exercise and lifestyle guideline based on the tested parameters. Therefore, we investigated cardiorespiratory fitness and its correlation with preoperative evaluation in patients with morbid obesity scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 38 patients (13 men and 25 women; mean age, 34.9 ± 10.9 years) scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Cardiopulmonary exercise stress tests were also performed. Measured cardiopulmonary responses included peak values of oxygen consumption (VO2), metabolic equivalents (METs), respiratory exchange ratio, heart rate (HR), and rate pressure product. Body composition variables were analyzed using bioimpedance analysis, laboratory parameters (hemoglobin A1c, lipid profile, inflammatory markers), and comorbidities. In addition, self-reported questionnaires were administered, including the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), and Moorehead-Ardelt Quality of Life Questionnaire (MAQOL).The average body mass index (BMI) and percent body fat were 39.8 ± 5.7 kg/m-2 and 46.2 ± 6.1%, respectively. The VO2peak/kg, METs, RERpeak, HRpeak, RPPpeak, age-predicted HR percentage, and VO2peak percentage were 18.6 ± 3.8 mL/min-1/kg-1, 5.3 ± 1.1, 1.1 ± 0.1, 158.5 ± 19.8, 32,414.4 ± 6,695.8 mm Hg/min-1, 85.2 ± 8.8%, and 76.1 ± 14.8%, respectively. BMI (P = .026), percent body fat (P = .001), HRpeak (P = .018), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (P = .007), total BDI (P = .043), HDRS (P = .025), SF-36 (P = .006), and MAQOL (P = .007) scores were significantly associated with VO2peak/kg. Body fat percentage (P < .001) and total SF-36 score (P < .001) remained significant in the multiple linear regression analysis.Various cardiorespiratory fitness markers were investigated in patients with morbid obesity who underwent the sleeve gastrectomy. Peak aerobic exercise capacity was significantly associated with preoperative parameters such as body fat composition and self-reported quality of life in these patients. These results could be utilized for preoperative and/or postoperative exercise strategies in patients with morbid obesity scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

Alterations in Circulating MicroRNAs and the Relation of MicroRNAs to Maximal Oxygen Consumption and Intima-Media Thickness in Ultra-Marathon Runners

The impact of long-term training on cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not clear. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) test is recommended as a useful measure to diagnose the early stages of atherosclerosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are altered due to endurance exercise and can be promising biomarkers of pathophysiological changes. We aimed to evaluate the association of circulating miRNAs with physical fitness and markers of atherosclerosis in ultra-marathon runners. Ultra-marathon runners had 28-fold upregulation of miR-125a-5p expressions compared to control individuals (p = 0.002), whereas let-7e and miR-126 did not differ statistically between ultra-marathon runners and controls. In the ultra-marathon runners' group, negative correlations were observed between VO₂max/kg and relative expression of miR-125a-5p and miR-126 (r = -0.402, p = 0.028; r = -0.438, p = 0.032, respectively). Positive correlations were observed between CIMT and miR-125a-5p and miR-126 (r = 0.388, p = 0.050; r = 0.504, p = 0.023, respectively) in ultra-marathon runners. Individuals with the highest quartile of VO₂max/kg had 23-fold lower miR-126 expression in comparison to subgroups with lower VO₂max/kg (p = 0.017). Our results may indicate that both miRNAs may serve as a biomarker for early pathological changes leading to atherosclerosis burden in athletes. Furthermore, the association between miRNAs and traditional risk factors for CVD indicate a possible use of these molecules as early biomarkers of future cardiovascular health.

Cardiorespiratory Fitness as a Correlate of Cardiovascular, Anthropometric, and Physical Risk Factors: Using the Ruffier Test as a Template

Background

Assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a standard procedure in routine clinical practices. Early identification of risk factors through screening is vital in the fight against chronic diseases. Evaluation of CRF can impose cost implications in the clinical setting; thus, a simple and easy-to-use test is to be advocated. The Ruffier test is a simple test that can assess CRF, and it is necessary to find whether the test reflects the effects of compounding factors in CRF.

Objective

This study aims to determine the association between CRF (estimated VO2max) with cardiovascular, anthropometric, and physical risk factors using the Ruffier test.

Methods

A cross-sectional study with a sample of 52 male participants was conducted. Before the Ruffier test, each participant's body weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thickness, thigh length, lower-limb length, thigh circumference, physical activity, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and pulmonary functions were recorded, and these factors correlated with CRF.

Results

There was a significant inverse relationship found between the estimated VO2max and age, height, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, a sum of skinfold, fat percentage, thigh length, lower-limb length, thigh circumference, smoking, blood pressure, heart rates, and diabetes (p < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was found between the estimated VO2max with physical activity and respiratory functions (p < 0.05). In the multivariable model, body weight and resting heart rate were significantly inversely associated with the estimated VO2max(p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Using the Ruffier test, various risk factors of CRF are correlated with the estimated VO2max. This test reflects the effects of different compounding factors on CRF; therefore, it can be used in routine clinical practices to identify the risk factors early.
