Interfacial microrheology and tensiometry in a miniature, 3-d printed Langmuir trough

The Oscillatory Spinning Drop Technique. An Innovative Method to Measure Dilational Interfacial Rheological Properties of Brine-Crude Oil Systems in the Presence of Asphaltenes

The oscillatory spinning drop method has been proven recently to be an accurate technique to measure dilational interfacial rheological properties. It is the only available equipment for measuring dilational moduli in low interfacial tension systems, as it is the case in applications dealing with surfactant-oil-water three-phase behavior like enhanced oil recovery, crude oil dehydration, or extreme microemulsion solubilization. Different systems can be studied, bubble-in-liquid, oil-in-water, microemulsion-in-water, oil-in-microemulsion, and systems with the presence of complex natural surfactants like asphaltene aggregates or particles. The technique allows studying the characteristics and properties of water/oil interfaces, particularly when the oil contains asphaltenes and when surfactants are present. In this work, we present a review of the measurements of crude oil-brine interfaces with the oscillating spinning drop technique. The review is divided into four sections. First, an introduction on the oscillating spinning drop technique, fundamental and applied concepts are presented. The three sections that follow are divided according to the complexity of the systems measured with the oscillating spinning drop, starting with simple surfactant-oil-water systems. Then the complexity increases, presenting interfacial rheology properties of crude oil-brine systems, and finally, more complex surfactant-crude oil-brine systems are reviewed. We have found that using the oscillating spinning drop method to measure interfacial rheology properties can help make precise measurements in a reasonable amount of time. This is of significance when systems with long equilibration times, e.g., asphaltene or high molecular weight surfactant-containing systems are measured, or with systems formulated with a demulsifier which is generally associated with low interfacial tension.

Interfacial Flow around Brownian Colloids

Understanding the flow created by particle motion at interfaces is a critical step toward understanding hydrodynamic interactions and colloidal self organization. We have developed correlated displacement velocimetry to measure flow fields around interfacially trapped Brownian particles. These flow fields can be decomposed into interfacial hydrodynamic multipoles, including force monopole and dipole flows. These structures provide key insights essential to understanding the interface's mechanical response. Importantly, the flow structure shows that the interface is incompressible for scant surfactant near the ideal gaseous state and contains information about interfacial properties and hydrodynamic coupling with the bulk fluid. The same dataset can be used to predict the response of the interface to applied, complex forces, enabling virtual experiments that produce higher order interfacial multipoles.

A miniaturized radial Langmuir trough for simultaneous dilatational deformation and interfacial microscopy

INNOVATION

Interfacial rheological properties of complex fluid-fluid interfaces are strongly influenced by the film microstructure. Experimental investigations for correlating interfacial morphology and rheology are notoriously challenging. A miniaturized radial Langmuir trough was developed to study complex fluid-fluid interfaces under purely dilatational deformations that operates in tandem with a conventional inverted microscope for simultaneous interfacial visualization.

EXPERIMENTS

Two materials were investigated at an air-water interface: poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). Surface pressure measurements made in the radial Langmuir trough were compared with a commercial rectangular Langmuir trough. Interfacial in situ visualization for each material was performed during the compression cycle in the radial trough. Challenges associated with the small size of the radial Langmuir trough, such as the influence of capillary deformation on the measured surface pressure, are also quantified.

FINDINGS

Measured surface pressures between the newly developed radial trough and the rectangular Langmuir trough compare well. Micrographs obtained in the radial Langmuir trough were used to obtain film properties such as Young's modulus. The new advance in colloid and interface science is the ability to capture structure-property relationships of planar interfaces using microscopy and purely dilatational deformation. This will advance the development of constitutive modeling of complex fluid-fluid interfaces.

The role of microparticles on the shape and surface tension of static bubbles

HYPOTHESIS

Surface tension is a critical parameter in bubbles and foams, yet it is difficult to assess when microparticles are attached at the interface. By considering the interaction force between an air-liquid interface and microparticles, modified equations for sessile bubble tensiometry can be derived to determine the surface tension and shape of static microparticle-laden bubbles.

EXPERIMENTS

A modified sessile bubble method, in which the forces between microparticles and the air-liquid interface are considered, was developed and used to analyse the surface tension of bubbles fully coated by a monolayer of silica microparticles of different sizes. The results are compared to those obtained using classical sessile bubble tensiometry. The new method is also used to investigate the contours of particle-laden bubbles of varying particle radius and contact angle.

FINDINGS

While the classical sessile bubble method overestimates the surface tension, results obtained using the modified sessile bubble method show that the surface tension of static microparticle-laden bubbles remains the same as that of uncoated bubbles, with no dependency on the particle size. The discrepancy is due to the fact that microparticles attached to the air-liquid interface deform a bubble in a similar way that changes in surface tension do for uncoated bubbles.

Phase-Dependent Surfactant Transport on the Microscale: Interfacial Tension and Droplet Coalescence

Liquid-liquid emulsion systems are usually stabilized by additives, known as surfactants, which can be observed in various environments and applications such as oily bilgewater, water-entrained diesel fuel, oil production, food processing, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. One important factor that stabilizes emulsions is the lowered interfacial tension (IFT) between the fluid phases due to surfactants, inhibiting the coalescence. Many studies have investigated the surfactant transport behavior that leads to corresponding time-dependent lowering of the IFT. For example, the rate of IFT decay depends on the phase in which the surfactant is added (dispersed vs continuous) due in part to differences in the near-surface depletion depth. Other key factors, such as the viscosity ratio between the dispersed and continuous phases and Marangoni stress, will also have an impact on surfactant transport and therefore the coalescence and emulsion stability. In this feature article, the measurement techniques for dynamic IFT are first reviewed due to their importance in characterizing surfactant transport, with a specific focus on macroscale versus microscale techniques. Next, equilibrium isotherm models as well as dynamic diffusion and kinetic equations are discussed to characterize the surfactant and the time scale of the surfactant transport. Furthermore, recent studies are highlighted showing the different IFT decay rates and its long-time equilibrium value depending on the phase into which the surfactant is added, particularly on the microscale. Finally, recent experiments using a hydrodynamic Stokes trap to investigate the impact of interfacial surfactant transport, or "mobility", and the phase containing the surfactant on film drainage and droplet coalescence will be presented.
