Attapulgite-Based Stable Superhydrophobic Coatings for Preventing Rain Attenuation of 5G Radomes

Superhydrophobic coatings hold immense promise for various applications. However, their practical use is currently hindered by issues such as poor stability, high costs, and complex preparation processes. Here, we present the preparation of cost-effective and stable superhydrophobic coatings through fluorination of natural attapulgite (F-ATP) nanorods and subsequent solvent-induced phase separation of a silicone-modified polyester adhesive (SMPA) with the F-ATP nanorods dispersed in it. Phase separation of the F-ATP/SMPA system forms a uniform suspension of microaggregates, which can be easily utilized for preparing superhydrophobic coatings via spray coating. The coatings have a low-surface-energy hierarchical micro/nanostructure due to phase separation of SMPA and adhesion of F-ATP to it. Moreover, the effects of the solvent composition (i.e., phase separation degree of SMPA) and the SMPA/F-ATP mass ratio on the morphology, superhydrophobicity, and stability of the coatings were investigated. After systematic optimization, the coatings exhibit excellent static and dynamic superhydrophobicity as well as high mechanical, chemical, thermal, and UV aging stability. Finally, the coatings were applied to the 5G radome surface and showed good rain attenuation prevention performance. Thus, we are confident that the superhydrophobic coatings have great application potential due to their advantages of outstanding performance, straightforward preparation procedures, cost-effectiveness, etc.

Enhancing Photocatalytic CO2 Conversion through Oxygen-Vacancy-Mediated Topological Phase Transition

Weak adsorption of gas reactants and strong binding of intermediates present a significant challenge for most transition metal oxides, particularly in the realm of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we demonstrate that the adsorption can be fine-tuned by phase engineering of oxide catalysts. An oxygen vacancy mediated topological phase transition in Ni-Co oxide nanowires, supported on a hierarchical graphene aerogel (GA), is observed from a spinel phase to a rock-salt phase. Such in situ phase transition empowers the Ni-Co oxide catalyst with a strong internal electric field and the attainment of abundant oxygen vacancies. Among a series of catalysts, the in situ transformed spinel/rock-salt heterojunction supported on GA stands out for an exceptional photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity and selectivity, yielding an impressive CO production rate of 12.5 mmol g-1  h-1 and high selectivity of 96.5 %. This remarkable performance is a result of the robust interfacial coupling between two topological phases that optimizes the electronic structures through directional charge transfer across interfaces. The phase transition process induces more Co2+ in octahedral site, which can effectively enhance the Co-O covalency. This synergistic effect balances the surface activation of CO2 molecules and desorption of reaction intermediates, thereby lowering the energetic barrier of the rate-limiting step.

Superhydrophilic and oleophobic sponges prepared based on Mussel-Inspired chemistry for efficient oil-water separation

Superhydrophilic/oleophobic materials are considered to be the best materials for achieving oil-water separation, but their preparation is difficult and the existing methods are not universal. In this paper, a two-step modification strategy was used to prepare superhydrophilic/oleophobic sponges by adjusting the polar and nonpolar components of the materials using mussel-inspired chemistry. While remaining superhydrophilic, the modified sponge surface has a maximum contact angle of 135° with different oils in air. The modified sponge exhibited superoleophobicity in water, and the contact angle of oil could reach more than 150°. In addition, the modified sponges were also reusable, chemically stable, and mechanically durable. Its oil-water separation flux was up to 24900 Lm-2  h-1  bar-1 , and the separation efficiency was above 97 %. We believe that this method will provide an environmentally friendly and efficient way to prepare the superhydrophilic/oleophobic materials.

Advances in the Research of Photo, Electrical, and Magnetic Responsive Smart Superhydrophobic Materials: Synthesis and Potential Applications

With the rapid advancement of technology, the wettability of conventional superhydrophobic materials no longer suffice to meet the demands of practical applications. Intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials have emerged as a highly sought-after material in various fields. The exceptional superhydrophobicity, reversible wetting, and intelligently controllable characteristics of these materials have led to extensive applications across industries, including industry, agriculture, defense, and medicine. Therefore, the development of intelligent superhydrophobic materials with superior performance, economic practicality, enhanced sensitivity, and controllability assumes utmost importance in advancing technology worldwide. This article provides a summary of the wettability principles of superhydrophobic surfaces and the mechanisms behind intelligent responsive superhydrophobicity. Furthermore, it reviews and analyzes the recent research progress on light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials, encompassing aspects such as material synthesis, modification, performance, and responses under diverse external stimuli. The article also explores the challenges associated with different types of responsive superhydrophobic materials and the unique application prospects of light, electric, and magnetic responsive superhydrophobic materials. Additionally, it outlines the future directions for the development of intelligent responsive superhydrophobic materials.

Biomimetic materials in oil/water separation: Focusing on switchable wettabilities and applications

Clean water resources are crucial for human society, as the leakage and discharge of oily wastewater not only harm the economy but also disrupt our living environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient oil-water separation technology. Surfaces with switchable superwetting behavior have garnered significant attention due to their importance in both fundamental research and practical applications. This review introduces the fundamental principles of wettability in the oil-water separation process, the basic theory of switchable wettability, and the mechanisms involved in oil-water separation. Subsequently, the review discusses the research progress, challenges, and issues associated with three conventional types of special wettability materials: superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials, superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials. Most importantly, it provides a detailed exploration of recent advancements in switchable wettability smart materials, which combine elements of traditional special wettability materials. These include stimulus-responsive smart materials, pre-wetting-induced materials, and Janus materials. The discussion covers key response factors, detailed examples of representative works, design concepts, and fabrication strategies. Finally, the review offers a comprehensive summary of switchable superwetting smart materials, encompassing their advantages and disadvantages, persistent challenges, and future prospects.

Preparation of superhydrophobic sponge and its application in oil-water separation and treatment of polymer-containing wastewater

At present, the application prospect of superhydrophobic materials in oil-water separation, an-tibacterial and other aspects have attracted more and more attention. However, preparing a simple and low-cost superhydrophobic material remains a challenge. Using acetone as solvent, candle soot, silver/silica nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane were uniformly mixed to form a mixed solution, and the superhydrophobic sponge was successfully prepared by spraying method. The results show that the superhydrophobic sponge has high water contact Angle (162°) and excellent oil-water separation efficiency, which can realize effective treatment of polymerized wastewater. In addition, the superhydrophobic sponge showed better antibacterial properties on the surface of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In this work, a simple way to prepare superhydro-phobic oil-water separation material is proposed. The preparation process is green, the material is easy to obtain, and it is expected to be widely used in practical production.

Recent Advances on the Abrasion Resistance Enhancements and Applications of Superhydrophobic Materials

Researches on superhydrophobicity have been overwhelming and have shown great advantages in various fields. However, the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic structures was usually poor, and they were easily damaged by external force or harsh environment, which greatly limited the applications of superhydrophobic surfaces. Much attention has been paid to improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic materials by researchers. In this review, aimed at the advances on improving the abrasion resistance of superhydrophobic surfaces, it was summarized and compared three enhancement strategies including the reasonably design of micro-nano structures, the adoption of adhesives, and the preparation of self-healing surface. Finally, the applications of typical superhydrophobic materials with abrasion resistance were reviewed in various fields. In order to broaden the application fields of superhydrophobic materials, the abarasion resistance should be further improved. Therefore, we proposed the ideas for the future development of superhydrophobic materials with higher abrasion resistance. We hope that this review will provide a new approach to the preparation and development of stable superhydrophobic surfaces with higher abrasion resistance.

Design of an interface heating device based on polydivinylbenzene/SiO2/Bi2WO6 and its visible light response performance for water purification

Environmental pollution and the shortage of drinking water are the challenges that mankind is facing. Solar interface evaporation technology has been demonstrated as an important method for producing clean water, but its application to sewage still faces problems, mainly manifested in solubility and oily pollutants. Therefore, an evaporator device contains a superhydrophobic Bi₂WO₆ felt floating layer, a filter paper hydrophilic layer, and a copper foam/CuO photothermal layer, of which the water contact angle of the superhydrophobic felt can reach 159°. The floating layer not only has the ability to adsorb n-hexane but the Rh B degradation can also be realized under indoor/outdoor light conditions. The carrier life of Bi₂WO₆ is 28.8 ns. A copper foam/CuO photothermal layer prepared through a low-temperature treatment is combined with the floating and hydrophilic layer to obtain an evaporation rate of 1.53 kg m^-2 h^-1.

Advances in Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Surfaces Made from Silicones: Fabrication and Application

As research on superhydrophobic materials inspired by the self-cleaning and water-repellent properties of plants and animals in nature continues, the superhydrophobic preparation methods and the applications of superhydrophobic surfaces are widely reported. Silicones are preferred for the preparation of superhydrophobic materials because of their inherent hydrophobicity and strong processing ability. In the preparation of superhydrophobic materials, silicones can both form micro-/nano-structures with dehydration condensation and reduce the surface energy of the material surface because of their intrinsic hydrophobicity. The superhydrophobic layers of silicone substrates are characterized by simple and fast reactions, high-temperature resistance, UV resistance, and anti-aging. Although silicone superhydrophobic materials have the disadvantages of relatively low mechanical stability, this can be improved by the rational design of the material structure. Herein, we summarize the superhydrophobic surfaces made from silicone substrates, including the cross-linking processes of silicones through dehydration condensation and hydrosilation, and the surface hydrophobic modification by grafting hydrophobic silicones. The applications of silicone-based superhydrophobic surfaces have been introduced such as self-cleaning, corrosion resistance, oil-water separation, etc. This review article should provide an overview to the bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces of silicone-based materials, and serve as inspiration for the development of polymer interfaces and colloid science.
