Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) contribute to human health, and LAB functionality has been studied using Caenorhabditis elegans as an alternative host. However, many studies have focused on the efficacy of a single strain of LAB, and few reports have compared various LAB strains. In this study, we examined the effects of 15 strains of LAB isolated from vegetables, meat, and fermented foods on nematode longevity and healthy lifespan. To reduce the frequency of laborious survival observations, we performed a lifespan assay on agar plates containing 2'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (FUdR), which inhibits egg hatching and prevents generation mixing. Four beneficial strains showed significant lifespan extension and increased spontaneous nematode mobility, regardless of treatment with or without FUdR and the frequency of survival observation. These results suggested increased longevity and an extended healthy lifespan, confirming the reliability of our method. The four strains are expected to show anti-ageing effects besides longevity and have effects on age-related degenerative diseases. Our labor-saving method can be used as an alternative to conventional methods and enable simultaneous screening of multiple strains. Future research could explore factors contributing to lifespan regulation by comparing and verifying differential strain effects on lifespan.

Abstract
Bacteriocins are ribosomally made bacterial peptides that have outstanding contributions in the field of food industry, as biopreservatives, and promising potentials in the medical field for improving human and animal health. Bacteriocins have many advantages over antibiotics such as being primary metabolites with relatively simpler biosynthetic mechanisms, which made their bioengineering for activity or specificity improving purposes much easier. Also, bacteriocins are degraded by proteolytic enzymes and do not stay in environment, which reduce chances of developing resistance. Bacteriocins can improve activity of some antibiotics, and some bacteriocins show potency against multidrug-resistant bacteria. Moreover, some potent bacteriocins have antiviral, antifungal, and antiprotozoal (antileishmanial) activities. On the other hand, bacteriocins have been introduced into the treatment of some ulcers and types of cancer. These potentials make bacteriocins attract extra attention as promising biotechnological tool. Hence, the history, characteristics, and classification of bacteriocins are described in this review. Furthermore, the main difference between bacteriocins and other antimicrobial peptides is clarified. Also, bacteriocins biosynthesis and identified modes of action are elucidated. Additionally, current and potential applications of bacteriocins in food and medical fields are highlighted. Finally, future perspectives concerning studying bacteriocins and their applications are discussed.

Abstract
This narrative review was aimed at identifying the opportunistic bacterial pathogens that can be transmitted by contaminated food and represent a current threat for patients particularly susceptible to infections because of underlying conditions or predisposing factors. The analysis was focused on recent case or outbreak reports and systematic reviews published in the years 2019 to 2023 and resulted in sorting 24 bacterial groups comprising the genera or species able to cause a variety of systemic or invasive infections if ingested with food or drinking water. These included both bacteria known to cause mild infections in immunocompetent persons and bacteria considered to be innocuous, which are used in food fermentation or as probiotics. No recent cases of infections transmitted through dietary routes were reported for the critical nosocomial pathogens widely found in food products, primarily Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, the very first sources of their introduction into the clinical environment still need to be established. In many instances, risky dietary habits, such as eating raw fish, seafood, raw meat, unpasteurized milk, and their derived products or the lack of control in fermentation processes, has led to the reported illnesses, pointing out the necessity to improve the hygiene of production and consumer awareness of the risks.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Despite a growing recognition that the type of nutrition received by preterm infants influences their intestinal microbiome and health outcomes, the microbiota of mother's own milk (MOM), pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM), and infant formula remain poorly characterized. In our study, we found that the structure of microbial communities, bacterial diversity, and relative abundances of specific genera were significantly different between MOM, PDHM, and formula. Additionally, our results suggest that the microbiota of MOM changes as a function of time and maternal factors. Lastly, we identified three lactotypes within MOM that have distinct microbial compositions and described the maternal factors associated with them. These findings set the stage for future research aimed at advancing our knowledge of the microbiota of preterm infant nutrition and the specific influence it may have on health outcomes.

Abstract
Background The gut microbiota has emerged as an intriguing and potentially influential factor in regulating bone health. However, the causal effect of the gut microbiota on bone mineral density (BMD) appears to differ throughout various life stages. Methods We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the potential causal relationship between gut microbiota and BMD in five distinct age groups: 0-15, 15-30, 30-45, 45-60, and 60 years and older. The analysis employed three different methods, namely MR-Egger, weighted median, and Inverse-variance weighting, to ensure the robustness of our findings, a series of sensitivity analyses were also conducted, such as horizontal pleiotropy tests, heterogeneity tests, and leave-one-out sensitivity tests. Results In the age group of 0-15 years, Eubacterium_fissicatena_group and Eubacterium_hallii_group were identified as risk factors for BMD. During the 15-30 age group, Phascolarctobacterium, Roseburia, and Ruminococcaceae_UCG_003 were found to be protective factors for BMD. In the 30-45 age group, Lachnospira genus demonstrated a protective effect on BMD, while Barnesiella and Lactococcus were identified as risk factors for BMD. Moving on to the 45-60 age group, Eubacterium_ventriosum_group, Lachnospiraceae_UCG_004, and Subdoligranulum were observed to be protective factors for BMD, while Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group, Fusicatenibacter, and Lactococcus were associated with an increased risk of BMD. In individuals aged 60 years and older, Fusicatenibacter and Ruminococcaceae_UCG_002 were also noted as risk factors for BMD. Conversely, Eubacterium_ruminantium_group, Ruminococcus_gauvreauii_group, Alistipes, and Coprococcus_3 were found to be protective factors for BMD, whereas Barnesiella and Sellimonas were identified as risk factors for BMD. Conclusion A robust causal relationship between gut microbiota and bone mineral density (BMD) exists throughout all stages of life, with Firmicutes phylum being the primary group associated with BMD across age groups. Gut microbiota linked with BMD primarily belong to the Firmicutes phylum across age groups. The diversity of gut microbiota phyla associated with BMD depicts relatively stable patterns during the ages of 0-45 years. However, for individuals aged 45 years and above, there is an observed increase in the number of gut microbiota species linked with BMD, and by the age of 60 years, a trend toward an increase in the Bacteroidetes phylum categories is proposed.

Abstract
Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) is the primary organism for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and is a globally recognized safe microorganism for the regulation of the intestinal micro-ecological balance of animals and improving the immune performance of the host. L. lactis is known to play a commercially important role in feed fortification, milk fermentation, and vaccine production, but pathogenic L. lactis has been isolated from many clinical cases in recent years, such as the brain of silver carp with Lactococcosis, the liver and spleen of diseased waterfowl, milk samples and padding materials with cow mastitis, and blood and urine from human patients with endocarditis. In dairy farming, where L. lactis has been used as a probiotic in the past, however, some studies have found that L. lactis can cause mastitis in cows, but the lack of understanding of the pathogenesis of mastitis in cows caused by L. lactis has become a new problem. The main objective of this review is to analyze the increasingly serious clinical mastitis caused by L. lactis and combined with the wide application of L. lactis as probiotics, to comprehensively discuss the characteristics and diversity of L. lactis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the last two decades, several cases of infections caused by Lactococcus lactis have been reported. This Gram-positive coccus is considered non-pathogenic for humans. However, in some rare cases, it can cause serious infections such as endocarditis, peritonitis, and intra-abdominal infections. CASE PRESENTATION A 56-year-old Moroccan patient was admitted to the hospital because of diffuse abdominal pain and fever. The patient had no past medical history. Five days before his admission, he developed abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant along with chills and feverish sensations. Investigations showed a liver abscess, which was drained, and the microbiological study of the pus revealed Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris. Three days after admission, control computed tomography objectified splenic infarctions. Cardiac explorations were performed and showed a floating vegetation on the ventricle side of the aortic valve. We retained the diagnosis of infectious endocarditis according to the modified Duke criteria. The patient was declared afebrile on day 5 and the evolution was clinically and biologically favorable. Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, formerly known as Streptococcus cremoris, is a rare cause of human infections. The first case of Lactococcus lactis cremoris endocarditis was reported in 1955. This organism includes three subspecies: lactis, cremoris, and hordniae. A MEDLINE and Scopus search showed only 13 cases of infectious endocarditis due to Lactococcus lactis, with subsp. cremoris identified in four of the cases. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first case report of the co-occurrence of Lactococcus lactis endocarditis and liver abscess. Despite its reported low virulence and good response to antibiotic treatment, Lactococcus lactis endocarditis must be considered a serious disease. It is imperative for a clinician to suspect this microorganism of causing endocarditis when they notice signs of infectious endocarditis in a patient with a history of consumption of unpasteurized dairy products or contact with farm animals. The finding of a liver abscess should lead to an investigation of endocarditis, even in previously healthy patients without obvious clinical signs of endocarditis.

Abstract
A colovesical fistula is a pathological communication between the colon and bladder. The symptoms include pneumaturia, fecaluria, and a lower urinary tract infection. The diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, but the symptoms are not specific. Therefore, confirming the diagnosis is challenging. Urine cultures performed in patients with colovesical fistulas usually show growth of Escherichia coli or mixed growth of bowel organisms. Urinary tract infections caused by Lactococcus lactis are very rare, as it is rarely considered pathogenic in humans. We report the case of a 70-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of a recurrent urinary tract infection. Urine cultures were positive for L. lactis. Abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) revealed focal thickening of the bladder wall and gas in the bladder. Cystoscopic examination and colonoscopy revealed sigmoid colon cancer and a sigmoido-vesical fistula. Laparoscopic surgical treatment was done. The patient recovered and was discharged 3 weeks later without chemoradiotherapy. On follow-up after 6 months, the patient was asymptomatic and stable. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of L. lactis infection of the urinary tract and the first reported case in adults. L. lactis infection usually indicates the presence of serious underlying diseases such as malignancies, uncontrolled diabetes, and organ failure.

Abstract
Lactococcus lactis infections are rarely reported in the medical literature. L. lactis is a commonly used fermenting agent which may be difficult to identify with common microbiology identification processes. This factor may contribute to its lack of recognition in medical journals. We report a case of an immunosuppressed 80-year-old female with L. lactis bacteremia, subsequently, found to have aortic valve vegetation, who responded clinically to a six-week duration of ceftriaxone therapy. Afterward, a brief updated literature review is presented on L. lactis infections.

Abstract
Lactococcus garvieae is a well-known pathogen of fish, but is rarely involved in infections in humans and other mammals. In humans, the main clinical manifestation of L. garvieae infections is endocarditis usually related to the ingestion of contaminated food, such as undercooked fish and shellfish. This study presents the first complete genomic sequence of a clinical L. garvieae strain isolated from a patient with endocarditis and its comparative analysis with other genomes. This human isolate contains a circular chromosome of 2 099 060 bp and one plasmid of 50 557 bp. In comparison with other fully sequenced L. garvieae strains, the chromosomal DNA of L. garvieae Lg-Granada carries a low proportion of insertion sequence elements and a higher number of putative prophages. Our results show that, in general, L. garvieae is a highly recombinogenic species with an open pangenome in which almost 30 % of its genome has undergone horizontal transfers. Within the genus Lactococcus, L. lactis is the main donor of genetic components to L. garvieae but, taking Lg-Granada as a representative, this bacterium tends to import more genes from Bacilli taxa than from other Lactococcus species.

Abstract
Plesiomonas shigelloides is a gram-negative bacillus that commonly causes self-limited diarrhea in humans. We present the case of P shigelloides bacteremia in a 49-year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis who developed septic shock a day after eating Dojo nabe (loach hotpot), a Japanese traditional dish.

Abstract
A 59-year-old woman presented with fever and malaise and was found to have Lactococcus lactis bacteraemia. L. lactis infection is rare in humans with few reported cases, with most associated with dairy food product ingestion. The patient reported use of a multistrain over-the-counter probiotic supplement. After isolation of L. lactis from blood culture, the patient was treated empirically with ertapenem and amoxicillin and displayed clinical improvement. She remained well after completion of antibiotic regimen and discontinued probiotic supplementation use. We review the clinical presentation of L. lactis infection including diagnosis, identification and treatment.

Abstract
The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) was developed to provide a safety pre-assessment within EFSA for microorganisms. Strains belonging to QPS taxonomic units (TUs) still require an assessment based on a specific data package, but QPS status facilitates fast track evaluation. QPS TUs are unambiguously defined biological agents assessed for the body of knowledge, their safety and their end use. Safety concerns are, where possible, to be confirmed at strain or product level, and reflected as 'qualifications'. Qualifications need to be evaluated at strain level by the respective EFSA units. The lowest QPS TU is the species level for bacteria, yeasts and protists/algae, and the family for viruses. The QPS concept is also applicable to genetically modified microorganisms used for production purposes if the recipient strain qualifies for the QPS status, and if the genetic modification does not indicate a concern. Based on the actual body of knowledge and/or an ambiguous taxonomic position, the following TUs were excluded from the QPS assessment: filamentous fungi, oomycetes, streptomycetes, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli and bacteriophages. The list of QPS-recommended biological agents was reviewed and updated in the current opinion and therefore now becomes the valid list. For this update, reports on the safety of previously assessed microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts and viruses (the latter only when used for plant protection purposes) were reviewed, following an Extensive Literature Search strategy. All TUs previously recommended for 2016 QPS list had their status reconfirmed as well as their qualifications. The TUs related to the new notifications received since the 2016 QPS opinion was periodically evaluated for QPS status in the Statements of the BIOHAZ Panel, and the QPS list was also periodically updated. In total, 14 new TUs received a QPS status between 2017 and 2019: three yeasts, eight bacteria and three algae/protists.

Abstract
The qualified presumption of safety (QPS) procedure was developed to provide a harmonised generic pre-evaluation to support safety risk assessments of biological agents performed by EFSA's Scientific Panels. The taxonomic identity, body of knowledge, safety concerns and antimicrobial resistance were assessed. Safety concerns identified for a taxonomic unit (TU) are, where possible and reasonable in number, reflected by 'qualifications' which should be assessed at the strain level by the EFSA's Scientific Panels. During the current assessment, no new information was found that would change the previously recommended QPS TUs and their qualifications. The list of microorganisms notified to EFSA from applications for market authorisation was updated with 47 biological agents, received between October 2018 and March 2019. Of these, 19 already had QPS status, 20 were excluded from the QPS exercise by the previous QPS mandate (11 filamentous fungi) or from further evaluations within the current mandate (9 notifications of Escherichia coli). Sphingomonas elodea, Gluconobacter frateurii, Corynebacterium ammoniagenes, Corynebacterium casei, Burkholderia ubonensis, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Microbacterium foliorum and Euglena gracilis were evaluated for the first time. Sphingomonas elodea cannot be assessed for a possible QPS recommendation because it is not a valid species. Corynebacterium ammoniagenes and Euglena gracilis can be recommended for the QPS list with the qualification 'for production purposes only'. The following TUs cannot be recommended for the QPS list: Burkholderia ubonensis, due to its potential and confirmed ability to generate biologically active compounds and limited of body of knowledge; Corynebacterium casei, Gluconobacter frateurii and Microbacterium foliorum, due to lack of body of knowledge; Phaeodactylum tricornutum, based on the lack of a safe history of use in the food chain and limited knowledge on its potential production of bioactive compounds with possible toxic effects.
