Chitosan with Natural Additives as a Potential Food Packaging

Recently, the development of materials based on natural polymers have been observed. This is the result of increasing environmental degradation, as well as increased awareness and consumer expectations. Many industries, especially the packaging industry, face challenges resulting from legal regulations. Chitin is the most common biopolymer right after cellulose and is used to produce chitosan. Due to the properties of chitosan, such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials are used in many industries. Many studies have been conducted to determine the suitability of chitosan materials as food packaging, and their advantages and limitations have been identified. Thanks to the possibility of modifying the chitosan matrix by using natural additives, it is possible to strengthen the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of chitosan films, which means that, in the near future, chitosan-based materials will be a more environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic packaging used so far. The article presents literature data on the most commonly used natural additives, such as essential oils, plant extracts, or polysaccharides, and their effects on antimicrobial, antioxidant, mechanical, barrier, and optical properties. The application of chitosan as a natural biopolymer in food packaging extends the shelf-life of various food products while simultaneously reducing the use of synthetic plastics, which in turn will have a positive impact on the natural environment. However, further research on chitosan and its combinations with various materials is still needed to extent the application of chitosan in food packaging and bring its application to industrial levels.

Application of biosynthesized metal nanoparticles in electrochemical sensors

Recently, the development of eco-friendly, cost-effective and reliable methods for synthesis of metal nanoparticles has drawn a considerable attention. The so-called green synthesis, using mild reaction conditions and natural resources as plant extracts and microorganisms, has established as a convenient, sustainable, cheap and environmentally safe approach for synthesis of a wide range of nanomaterials. Over the past decade, biosynthesis is regarded as an important tool for reducing the harmful effects of traditional nanoparticle synthesis methods commonly used in laboratories and industry. This review emphasizes the significance of biosynthesized metal nanoparticles in the field of electrochemical sensing. There is increasing evidence that green synthesis of nanoparticles provides a new direction in designing of cost-effective, highly sensitive and selective electrode-catalysts applicable in food, clinical and environmental analysis. The article is based on 157 references and provided a detailed overview on the main approaches for green synthesis of metal nanoparticles and their applications in designing of electrochemical sensor devices. Important operational characteristics including sensitivity, dynamic range, limit of detection, as well as data on stability and reproducibility of sensors have also been covered.

A dual mode photoelectrochemical sensor for nitrobenzene and L-cysteine based on 3D flower-like Cu2SnS3@SnS2 double interfacial heterojunction photoelectrode

In this work, 3D hierarchical Cu₂SnS₃@SnS₂ flower assembled from nanopetals with sandwich-like Cu₂SnS₃-SnS₂-Cu₂SnS₃ double interfacial heterojunction was successfully designed and synthesized on fluoride doped tin oxide (FTO) for photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor by in situ electrodeposition p-type Cu₂SnS₃ nanoparticles on both inner and outer surfaces of n-type SnS₂ nanopetals. The unique double interfacial heterojunction simultaneously combines 3D flower-like architectures to drastically increase the light trapping and absorption in visible-near infrared range (Vis-NIR), and dramatically inhibites the charge carrier recombination, which is crucial for boosting the PEC activity. Benefitting from the shape and compositional merits, the Cu₂SnS₃@SnS₂ heterojunction possess dual-mode signal by controlling the electrodeposition time to manipulate the composition ratio of Cu₂SnS₃ and SnS₂. The Cu₂SnS₃@SnS₂/FTO electrode not only exhibits excellent photoeletro-reduction capacity for ultra-sensitive sensing trace persistent organic pollutant (nitrobenzene, NB), but also presents photoeletro-oxidization activity for high selective detection of L-cysteine (L-Cys) without any auxiliary enzyme under the light illumination. Dual mode sensor displayed superb performance for the detection of NB/L-Cys, showing a wide linear range from 100 pM to 300 μM/10 nM to 100 μM and a low detection limit (3S/N) of 68 pM/8.5 nM, respectively. Such a tunable double interfacial heterojunction design opened up new avenue for constructing multifunction PEC sensing platform.

Sonochemical synthesis of gum guar biopolymer stabilized copper oxide on exfoliated graphite: Application for enhanced electrochemical detection of H2O2 in milk and pharmaceutical samples

A novel and cost-effective synthesis of biopolymer-based organic and inorganic composite materials have received substantial attention in a broad range application including electroanalysis of small molecules. In this perspective, we report the synthesis of gum guar (guar) biopolymer stabilized cupric oxide decorated on exfoliated graphite (GR-guar/CuO) composite. Different physicochemical characterization methods were used to confirm the successful exfoliation of graphite and formation of the GR-guar/CuO composite. A simple sonochemical method has been used for the preparation of guar stabilized exfoliated graphite (GR-guar). The flower-like CuO on GR-guar and guar stabilized CuO (CuO-guar) composites were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed that the GR-guar/CuO composite modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) had enhanced electro-reduction ability towards H₂O₂ than GR-guar and pristine graphite/CuO-guar modified SPCEs. Under optimized experimental conditions, the GR-guar/CuO composite modified electrode detects H₂O₂ in the response ranges from 0.02 to 1296.6 µM. The sensor shows a lower detection limit of 5.8 nM with high sensitivity. The as-prepared GR-guar/CuO composite sensor is highly reproducible and had excellent selectivity and practicality towards the detection of H₂O₂. Consequently, the fabricated sensor can be used for the accurate detection of H₂O₂ in real samples.
