PCDD and PCDF intake through consumption of locally produced seafood by Venice lagoon residents: elements for risk management

Distribution, Risk Assessment and Source of Heavy Metals in Mangrove Wetland Sediments of Dongzhai Harbor, South China

Heavy metals are common environmental contaminants that are toxic, non-biodegradable, and bioaccumulative. They can bioaccumulate through the food chain and present a risk to both public health and ecology. Therefore, this study takes the mangrove wetland of Dongzhai Harbor as an example. The concentrations of heavy metals such as As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the surface sediments of mangrove wetlands were measured to reveal their distribution, the contamination level was assessed, and the sources of contamination were analyzed. The distribution of Cr, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd concentrations are: Yanfeng East River > Sanjiang River > Yanzhou River > Yanfeng West River, while the As concentration in the Yanfeng West River is greater than that in the Yanfeng East River. According to the correlation analysis, the concentrations of Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, and Cd are significantly and positively correlated with total organic carbon (TOC), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and salinity (SAL) and shared a significantly negative correlation with pH. There is moderate contamination risk of As and slight contamination risk of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in most regions within the study area. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn exhibit the same sources, which are mainly influenced by human sources such as aquaculture, agricultural cultivation, and livestock farming, while the source of As comes from aquaculture.

Effect of minerals and heavy metals in sand samples of Ponnai river, Tamil Nadu, India

River sand samples have been collected from Ponnai river, Tamil Nadu, India for characterization of minerals and heavy metals by different spectroscopic techniques. Initially, the samples were subjected by Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR) spectroscopic technique and infra-red absorption bands values are observed in the range of 515–520, 695–700, 775–780 cm⁻¹ which shows the presence of quartz in all the samples. Similarly, infra-red peaks were absorbed for feldspar, kaolinite, calcite, gibbsite and organic carbon and confirmed by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) technique. Additionally, zircon, aragonite, magnetite and kyanite minerals were identified in the samples using only the XRD method. The concentration of heavy metals such as Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, Hg, As, Mn, Cu has been determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). An average metal concentration measured in mg kg⁻¹ were: Pb 0.12, As 0.15, Hg 0.13, Cu 2.80, Zn 10.15 Cr 12.70, Ni 2.86 and Mn 104.94 and hence found in the order of Mn > Cr > Zn > Ni > Cu > As > Hg > Pb. These average values do not exceed the world average value and hence potentially do not affect the quality of sand in the river. In addition to that, presences of heavy metals are confirmed by scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS) analysis. In order to understand the possible natural and anthropogenic sources of heavy metals, multivariate statistical techniques such as Pearson correlation, principal component and cluster analysis were performed. Results obtained from the statistical techniques were good agreement with each other.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in clams Tapes philippinarum cultured in the Venice Lagoon (Italy): Contamination levels and dietary exposure assessment

Total polychlorinated biphenyl (SigmaPCB) concentrations calculated as the sum of 21 and the toxicity equivalent (TEQ) of dioxin-like PCBs calculated on the basis of the toxic equivalent factors were assessed in Manila clams Tapes philippinarum cultured in the Venice Lagoon. The concentrations showed a predominance of hexa-chlorobiphenyls followed by penta-, hepta-, tetra- and tri-chlorobiphenyls. The highest levels of SigmaPCB detected were 4.01 ng/g, 2.71 ng/g and 2.68 ng/g wet weight at a southern lagoon site and two northern lagoon sites, respectively. There was a significant differentiation in toxicity levels between culture sites. The highest value was 0.239 pg TEQ/g at a southern lagoon site; the lowest was 0.004 pg TEQ/g at a central lagoon site.
