Colloidal Stability of PFSA-Ionomer Dispersions Part II: Determination of Suspension pH Using Single-Ion Potential Energies

Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomers serve a vital role in the performance and stability of fuel-cell catalyst layers. These properties, in turn, depend on the colloidal processing of precursor inks. To understand the colloidal structure of fuel-cell catalyst layers, we explore the aggregation of PFSA ionomers dissolved in water/alcohol solutions and relate the predicted aggregation to experimental measurements of solution pH. Not all side chains contribute to measured pH because of burying inside particle aggregates. To account for the measured degree of dissociation, a new description is developed for how PFSA aggregates interact with each other. The developed single-counterion electrostatic repulsive pair potential from Part I is incorporated into the Smoluchowski collision-based kinetics of interacting aggregates with buried side chains. We demonstrate that the surrounding solvent mixture affects the degree of aggregation as well as the pH of the system primarily through the solution dielectric permittivity, which drives the strength of the interparticle repulsive energies. Successful pH prediction of Nafion ionomer dispersions in water/n-propanol solutions validates the numerical calculations. Nafion-dispersion pH measurements serve as a surrogate for Nafion particle-size distributions. The model and framework can be leveraged to explore different ink formulations.

In Situ Studies of Copper-Based CO2 Reduction Electrocatalysts by Scanning Transmission Soft X-ray Microscopy

A microfluidic-enabled electrochemical device has been developed to investigate electrochemically active nanomaterials under reaction conditions using in situ scanning transmission soft X-ray microscopy (STXM). In situ STXM measurements were conducted on electrodeposited Cu catalysts under electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) conditions. The study provides detailed, quantitative results about the changes in the morphology and chemical structure of the catalytic nanoparticles as a function of applied potentials. The deposited Cu nanoparticles initially contain both Cu(0) and Cu(I). As an increasingly cathodic potential is applied, the Cu(I) species gradually convert to Cu(0) over the potential range of +0.4 to 0 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE). During this process, Cu(I) particles of various sizes are converted to metallic Cu at different reaction rates and at slightly different potentials, indicating a degree of heterogeneity in the electrochemical response of discrete particles. At CO2R relevant potentials, only metallic Cu is observed, and the morphology of the particles is fairly stable within the spatial resolution limits of STXM (∼40 nm). We also report in situ STXM studies of a working electrode with relatively thick Cu-based electrodeposits. The spatially resolved chemical analysis identifies that Cu-oxide species can persist under CO2R conditions, but only when the catalytic nanoparticles are electronically isolated from the working electrode and therefore are catalytically irrelevant. In summary, in situ STXM is presented as a technique to gain advanced morphological and spatially resolved chemical structure insights into electrochemically active nanomaterials, which was used to provide improved understanding regarding Cu nanomaterial catalysts under CO2 reduction conditions.

Three-dimensional nanoimaging of fuel cell catalyst layers

Catalyst layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells consist of platinum-group-metal nanocatalysts supported on carbon aggregates, forming a porous structure through which an ionomer network percolates. The local structural character of these heterogeneous assemblies is directly linked to the mass-transport resistances and subsequent cell performance losses; its three-dimensional visualization is therefore of interest. Herein we implement deep-learning-aided cryogenic transmission electron tomography for image restoration, and we quantitatively investigate the full morphology of various catalyst layers at the local-reaction-site scale. The analysis enables computation of metrics such as the ionomer morphology, coverage and homogeneity, location of platinum on the carbon supports, and platinum accessibility to the ionomer network, with the results directly compared and validated with experimental measurements. We expect that our findings and methodology for evaluating catalyst layer architectures will contribute towards linking the morphology to transport properties and overall fuel cell performance.

Dose measurement in the TEM and STEM

Practical aspects of dosimetry are considered, including the measurement of electron-beam current and current density. Complications that arise in the case of a focused probe or a STEM image are discussed and solutions proposed. Advantages of expressing the radiation dose in Grays are listed and a simple formula given for converting electron fluence to Gray units, based on a near constancy of the stopping power per atomic electron. Comparisons with stopping-power calculations and EELS measurements suggest that this formula is accurate to within 5%. Based on the stopping power formula, a new way of measuring the local mass-thickness of light-element specimens is proposed. The average energy loss per inelastic collision is shown to be higher than previous expectations.
