Dielectric behaviour of an epoxy network cured with a phosphonium-based ionic liquid

Thermodynamics of Tri- and Tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2 Amine Polyaddition: A Theoretical Perspective

The thermodynamics of newly designed tri- and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2 monomers reacting with several diamines used as curing agents to form epoxy/amine thermosets was studied. The ability of each epoxy/amine combination to induce cross-linking both through the substitution of multiple epoxy groups and through multiple additions to a single amine was investigated. Through an increased understanding of the thermodynamics of epoxy-amine polymerization in complex polyepoxy-ILs, it is possible to more thoroughly understand the factors affecting the reactivity in these complex systems. These calculations showed that while each possible epoxy-amine combination was exergonic to both forms of cross-linking, the degree to which both amines-induced cross-linking and epoxy-induced cross-linking was favored varied between epoxy-amine combinations. Thermodynamic results obtained using density functional theory were experimentally validated through differential scanning calorimetry results, wherein similar trends were noted between theory and experiment. Among the trends noted in amines-epoxy combinations tested, tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2/PACM (i.e., a cycloaliphatic diamine) was found to be a prime candidate for amine cross-linking, with the addition of a second epoxy to a single amine group being notably the most negative of all epoxy-amine combinations at -77.6 kJ mol-1. While in the case of epoxy cross-linking, the aliphatic polyetheramine denoted Jeffamine-D230-containing systems were found to be the most exergonic, with additions of primary amines to triepoxyimidazolium and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2 averaging -86.9 kJ mol-1. Interaction energy analysis indicated that the aromatic amine named sulfanilamide is the most favorable to engage in reactions due to having the most negative interaction energies with already highly substituted epoxy monomers. These results can be used to adjust the cross-linking possibilities of tri- and tetraepoxyimidazolium NTf2/amine polymerization and give insight into the predominant cross-linking reactions in these unique systems.

Ionic Liquids Facilitate the Dispersion of Branched Polyethylenimine Grafted ZIF-8 for Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been previously shown as an emerging modified class of epoxy resin. In this work, we report a simple strategy for preventing zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles from agglomerating in epoxy resin (EP). Branched polyethylenimine grafted ZIF-8 in ionic liquid (BPEI-ZIF-8) nanofluid with good dispersion was prepared successfully using an ionic liquid as both the dispersant and curing agent. Results indicated that the thermogravimetric curve of the composite material had no noticeable change with increasing BPEI-ZIF-8/IL content. The glass transition temperature (T_g) of the epoxy composite was reduced with the addition of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL. The addition of 2 wt% BPEI-ZIF-8/IL into EP effectively improved the flexural strength to about 21.7%, and the inclusion of 0.5 wt% of BPEI-ZIF-8/IL EP composites increased the impact strength by about 83% compared to pure EP. The effect of adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL on the T_g of epoxy resin was explored, and its toughening mechanism was analyzed in combination with SEM images showing fractures in the EP composites. Moreover, the damping and dielectric properties of the composites were improved by adding BPEI-ZIF-8/IL.

An Experimental Study on the Dielectric Properties of Rubber Materials

According to specific formulas, the mixing of rubber samples occurs by two methods: open mixing and internal mixing. The effects of frequency, mixing process, carbon black (CB) content, zinc oxide (ZnO) content, and stearic acid (SA) content on the dielectric properties of rubber materials were studied. The results showed that the effects of the mixing process on the dielectric properties of the rubber samples cannot be ignored, and the appropriate mixing process should be selected when preparing the required rubber materials. The dielectric constant and loss factor of the rubber samples vary depending on the frequency. The dielectric constant had a peak and valley value, while the loss factor only had a peak. The dielectric constant and loss factor of rubber samples were significantly affected by the content of CB, ZnO, and SA. The peak frequency decreased with the increase in CB content, however, the dielectric constant increased with an increase in CB content. The higher the ZnO content, the lower the peak frequency. In addition, the dielectric constant and loss factor increased with an increase in ZnO content. The higher the SA content, the greater the peak frequency. In addition, the dielectric constant and loss factor decreased with an increase in SA content. It is hoped that the experimental results obtained can provide guidance for the study of the dielectric properties, microwave absorption properties, and microwave heating characteristics of rubber polymers.
