Abstract
BACKGROUND Wide range of ovulation distribution is the main restricting factor in establishing the pregnancy following oestrus synchronization (ES) and fixed time insemination (FTI) in sheep. OBJECTIVES Determining the ovulation time (OVT) following ES with two different vaginal devices, its relation to progesterone and conception upon FTI with frozen/thawed semen. METHODS Oestrus was synchronized using either controlled internal drug release (CIDR) (ewe, n = 6; ewe lamb, n = 5) or vaginal sponge (ewe, n = 6; ewe lamb, n = 5) insertion for 12 days, plus Equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) at devices removal (Day 0). Sizes of the ovarian follicles were measured using transvaginal probe at -12, 0 and 30-33, 53 h and continued every 3-4 h until 75 h after eCG treatment. Serum progesterone amounts were measured at -12, 0, +2 and +11. Laparoscopic FTI was done at 60.5 ± 0.5 h. RESULTS The CIDR-treated group initiated and completed ovulations earlier compared to sponge-treated females (median: 64 vs. 71 h; p < 0.05). Ewe lambs were ovulated earlier compared to ewes in the sponge-treated group (66.71 vs. 71.5; p = 0.017). Mean sizes of ovulatory follicles and corpora lutea were not affected by device types. Higher amounts of progesterone were observed in CIDR group compared to sponge-treated group at device removal (2.68 ± 0.12 vs. 0.30 ± 0.01 ng/mL; p < 0.001). The conception was confirmed in 2/10, and 5/11 females of sponge and CIDR-treated females, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Types of progestogens influence the OVT, and consequently the result of FTI with frozen/thawed semen. The optimum timespan for FTI should be chosen according to the device types during non-breeding season.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of breed and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) on ovarian response and in vitro embryo production from young goats. Thirty-one (12 Alpine, 10 Nubian, and 9 Saanen) were randomly assigned into three treatments of eCG (T1, 0 IU; T2, 500 IU; and T3, 1000 IU). Alpine goats showed the highest amount and largest size of follicles (P = 0.003). The effect of eCG dose 24 h post application was significant (P < 0.05), and was superior in goats undergoing T2. The aspiration rate of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC) was 34% (P > 0.05), except for percentage of denuded oocytes, which obtained the highest number (P = 0.003) in the Saanen goats. The same difference was found (P = 0.02) in oocytes grade III in T2 and T3, with 42.5 and 37.9% respectively. In vitro embryo production was 80.0% of IVF/cleavage in the Alpine goats (P = 0.003). Embryo production was the greatest for T2 (69.2%; P = 0.004). T3 goats had higher percentage of morula stage (66.6%; P = 0.030). It is concluded that the application of eCG has a significant effect on the ovarian status, and quality and quantity of embryos with a differential response depending on the breed.

Abstract
This study was conducted to compare the effect of transient high-energy diet in a short-term period with or without eCG injection on ovarian follicle development, twining rate, serum metabolites and hormones in ewes. A total of 45 estrous cyclic Naeini ewes were randomly assigned to three experimental groups: 1-Control (control), 2-High energy short-term feeding (HE), and 3-high energy short-term feeding + eCG injection (HEe). Ewes were housed in individual pens with free access to feed and water. The stage of the estrous cycle of all ewes was synchronized by insertion of intravaginal progesterone sponges. Focus feeding started from 4 days before until 1 day after sponge removal. Follicle development was monitored from 4 days before until 1 day after sponge removal and blood samples were taken during this time. Results showed that ewes fed high energy diets (HE and HEe) had greater (P < 0.05) large follicle numbers compared with the control group. Feeding high energy diets increased (P < 0.05) serum glucose, cholesterol and insulin, but had lesser (P < 0.05) serum urea nitrogen concentrations near the time of ovulation. After the start of experiment, ewes fed high energy diets had less (P < 0.05) serum estradiol. However, 1 day after sponge removal, serum estradiol in HE and HEe groups increased (P < 0.05). It was concluded that short-term (6-day) changes in amount of dietary energy with or without eCG injection increased twin births and had beneficial effects on the blood metabolites and hormone concentrations in Naeini ewes.

Abstract
Synchronization of estrus and ovulation are of paramount importance in modern livestock improvement programs. These methods are critical for assisted reproduction technologies, including artificial insemination and embryo transfer, that can increase productivity. In the current study, subcutaneous implants containing norgestomet were placed for long (14 days), medium (9 days), and short (5 days) periods of time in 70 crossbred ewes undergoing fixed-time artificial insemination. The resulting effects on estrus synchronization and conception rates were subsequently evaluated. Among the synchronized ewes, 85.7% (60/70) underwent estrus over a period of 72 h after progestagen treatment ceased. The shortest mean interval between withdrawal of the device and onset of estrus (34.2 ± 8.9 h) was observed in the G14 days of P4 group (p < 0.05). The conception rate of the G14 days of P4 group was statistically higher than that of the other groups (83.3% vs. 60.9% vs. 47.8%; p < 0.05). In conclusion, 14 days of norgestomet treatment produced higher conception rates and a greater number of pregnancies at the beginning of the breeding season.
