Improving reduced-order models through nonlinear decoding of projection-dependent outputs

A fundamental hindrance to building data-driven reduced-order models (ROMs) is the poor topological quality of a low-dimensional data projection. This includes behavior such as overlapping, twisting, or large curvatures or uneven data density that can generate nonuniqueness and steep gradients in quantities of interest (QoIs). Here, we employ an encoder-decoder neural network architecture for dimensionality reduction. We find that nonlinear decoding of projection-dependent QoIs, when embedded in a dimensionality reduction technique, promotes improved low-dimensional representations of complex multiscale and multiphysics datasets. When data projection (encoding) is affected by forcing accurate nonlinear reconstruction of the QoIs (decoding), we minimize nonuniqueness and gradients in representing QoIs on a projection. This in turn leads to enhanced predictive accuracy of a ROM. Our findings are relevant to a variety of disciplines that develop data-driven ROMs of dynamical systems such as reacting flows, plasma physics, atmospheric physics, or computational neuroscience.

The open diffusion data derivatives, brain data upcycling via integrated publishing of derivatives and reproducible open cloud services

We describe the Open Diffusion Data Derivatives (O3D) repository: an integrated collection of preserved brain data derivatives and processing pipelines, published together using a single digital-object-identifier. The data derivatives were generated using modern diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data (dMRI) with diverse properties of resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. In addition to the data, we publish all processing pipelines (also referred to as open cloud services). The pipelines utilize modern methods for neuroimaging data processing (diffusion-signal modelling, fiber tracking, tractography evaluation, white matter segmentation, and structural connectome construction). The O3D open services can allow cognitive and clinical neuroscientists to run the connectome mapping algorithms on new, user-uploaded, data. Open source code implementing all O3D services is also provided to allow computational and computer scientists to reuse and extend the processing methods. Publishing both data-derivatives and integrated processing pipeline promotes practices for scientific reproducibility and data upcycling by providing open access to the research assets for utilization by multiple scientific communities.

Human white matter and knowledge representation

Understanding how knowledge is represented in the human brain is a fundamental challenge in neuroscience. To date, most of the work on this topic has focused on knowledge representation in cortical areas and debated whether knowledge is represented in a distributed or localized fashion. Fang and colleagues provide evidence that brain connections and the white matter supporting such connections might play a significant role. The work opens new avenues of investigation, breaking through disciplinary boundaries across network neuroscience, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and classical lesion studies.
