Global citizenship is key to securing global health: the role of higher education

Belonging and Global Citizenship in a STEM University

For the past two decades, there has been a resurgence in the actualization of civic missions in universities; these universities have continued to demonstrate commitment to educate for the purpose of global citizenship. Global citizenship is both a skillset and a mindset. As universities engage in efforts to increase students’ capabilities for living and working in a diverse society, research in this area has often focused on students of social science disciplines in the United States, presenting an opportunity for an investigation into students’ sense of belonging and global citizenship in the STEM university context in the United Kingdom. Building on prior civic scholarship, which defines citizenship in part as a sense of belonging, this paper presents interview data from a longitudinal, mixed-methods study at a STEM university in the United Kingdom to explore the meanings and experiences of students’ belonging in a multicultural institution, and their attitudes about current political issues before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study presents theoretical and practical implications for citizenship education research and practice.

COVID-19 Contact Tracing Apps: A Technologic Tower of Babel and the Gap for International Pandemic Control

As the world struggles with the new COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing apps of various types have been adopted in many jurisdictions for combating the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, even if they are successful in containing the virus within national borders, these apps are becoming ineffective as international travel is gradually resumed. The problem rests in the plurality of apps and their inability to operate in a synchronized manner, as well as the absence of an international entity with the power to coordinate and analyze the information collected by the disparate apps. The risk of creating a useless Tower of Babel of COVID-19 contact tracing apps is very real, endangering global health. This paper analyzes legal barriers for realizing the interoperability of contact tracing apps and emphasizes the need for developing coordinated solutions to promote safe international travel and global pandemic control.

Global citizenship: Defining capabilities for speech-language pathology

Purpose: This paper outlines the findings of a scoping review of the literature relating to global citizenship. The purpose of the review was to develop a working definition and associated capabilities for assessing global citizenship among speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which may also prove helpful to other health professionals and for educating tertiary students. Method: Using Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework, key databases were searched, namely Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library and Google Scholar. Subsequently the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms were applied for coding and categorising initial research findings. Articles were individually appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool (CASP). Result: Of the 2126 articles identified, 21 articles were determined to satisfy the search criteria. The literature revealed nine capabilities associated with global citizenship appropriate for health professionals including SLPs. Conclusion: Based on the findings, a working definition is determined for assessing professional global citizenship capabilities, which will prove useful for improving occupational standards, for charting competencies, and ultimately enhancing professional capability.

Teaching About Climate Change in Medical Education: An Opportunity

Climate change threatens many of the gains in development and health over the last century. However, it could also be a catalyst for a necessary societal transformation to a sustainable and healthy future. Doctors have a crucial role in climate change mitigation and health system adaptation to prepare for emergent health threats and a carbon-constrained future. This paper argues that climate change should be integrated into medical education for three reasons: first, to prepare students for clinical practice in a climate-changing world; secondly, to promote public health and eco-health literacy; and finally, to deepen existing learning and strengthen graduate attributes. This paper builds on existing literature and the authors' experience to outline potential learning objectives, teaching methods and assessment tasks. In the wake of recent progress at the United Nations climate change conference, COP-21, it is hoped that this paper will assist universities to integrate teaching about climate change into medical education. Significance for public healthThere is a strong case for teaching about climate change in medical education. Anthropogenic climate change is accepted by scientists, governments and health authorities internationally. Given the dire implications for human health, climate change is of fundamental relevance to future doctors. Integrating climate change into medical education offers an opportunity for future doctors to develop skills and insights essential for clinical practice and a public health role in a climate-changing world. This echoes a broader call for improved public health literacy among medical graduates. This paper provides medical schools with a rationale and an outline for teaching on climate change.
