Regional Odontodysplasia: A Systematic Review of Case Reports

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare developmental disorder characterised by hypoplasia and hypomineralisation of enamel and dentin. Our systematic review aimed to organise the knowledge on localisation, symptomatology and treatment methods in patients with regional odontodysplasia based on case reports published in the databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Case reports were described in 28 different countries, considering 180 patients (including 91 females). Regional odontodysplasia occurs mainly in both deciduous and permanent dentition (66.1%). The affected teeth were observed more frequently in the maxilla (70.0%), especially on the left side (45.6%). The most common reported symptoms were ghost teeth, poorly developed buds, yellowish-brown colour of crowns and delayed eruption of permanent teeth in affected quadrants. The most popular treatment method was surgical treatment (78.6%) with subsequent prosthetic therapy (34.6%). Based on the review of cases, pathognomonic clinical and radiological signs can be found, however, it is difficult to reach a consensus on the choice of treatment method.

Odontodisplasia regional: relato de caso clínico

A Odontodisplasia Regional é uma anomalia dental rara, que envolve os tecidos dentários de origem ectodérmica (esmalte) e mesodérmica (dentina, polpa e cemento). O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar um caso clínico de odontodisplasia regional em uma criança. Paciente de nove anos, sexo masculino, tendo como queixa principal a ausência de alguns dentes decíduos e a não irrupção dos dentes permanentes em determinada região da maxila. O dente 16, que havia irrompido, apresentava-se clinicamente, com um esmalte hipoplásico e hipomineralizado e uma imagem radiográfica bastante tênue, por isso sendo conhecido como “dente fantasma”. Foram apresentados nesse relato, aspectos clínicos e radiográficos e destacadas as questões envolvidas na elaboração de um plano de tratamento. Há poucos estudos disponíveis sobre a odontodisplasia regional. A anamnese detalhada e o conhecimento das características clínicas e radiográficas são imprescindíveis para um correto diagnóstico.

Mandibular Regional Odontodysplasia in an 8-year-old Boy showing Teeth Disorders, Gubernaculum Tracts, and Altered Bone Fractal Pattern

Regional odontodysplasia (RO) is a rare nonhereditary developmental condition usually affecting maxilla and female patients. A few number of articles have used the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to describe imaging findings in RO. Thus, this article aims to report unusual imaging findings in a Brazilian child who presented with mandibular RO. A healthy 8-year-old boy was referred for evaluation of an anterior mandibular gingival enlargement. Radiographically, all right mandibular teeth showed wide pulp chambers and shortened roots with thin dentinal walls and open apices, featuring a “ghost teeth“ appearance, which indicated a diagnosis of RO. Missing teeth and altered radiopacity were observed. Cone beam computed tomography provided great insight into RO, allowing to identify gubernaculum tracts (GTs) associated with RO teeth. Fractal analysis of the bone surrounding RO teeth revealed an altered trabecular pattern.

Regional odontodysplasia: orthodontic treatment and transplantation of premolars

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare and unique dental anomaly involving both dentitions, but mostly the teeth of 1 quadrant. This report describes the combined surgical and orthodontic treatment of a boy with regional odontodysplasia. The mandibular right central and lateral incisors and the canine (as well as the deciduous predecessors) were affected. In a 2-step procedure, the maxillary right and left second premolars were autotransplanted to the affected area. The extraction sites in the maxilla were closed, and a good functional occlusion was established.

Hemifacial atrophy with bilateral short roots

We present a case in which the patient had both bilateral shortening of the roots, and hemifacial atrophy. As far as we know, this combination has not been described before.

Regional odontodysplasia: an unusual case with a conservative approach

A case of a 14-year-old male with regional odontodysplasia is reported. In this presentation many atypical clinical and radiographical features of this condition are present. The chief complaint of the patient was the enlargement of the gingiva and, according to the literature, inflammatory processes are the main reason why patients look for care. Moreover, there was no radiographic evidence of unerupted teeth in this report. The functional and psychological benefits of the conservative approach are emphasised.

Autotransplantation for treatment of regional odontodysplasia. Case report with 6-year follow-up

Regional odontodysplasia is an uncommon dental malformation with characteristic clinical and radiographic findings. Affected teeth appear discolored with irregularly shaped surfaces. Radiographically wide pulp chambers and thin poorly defined hard tissue outlines are typical features. This report describes a 9-year-old girl with recurrent and recalcitrant periapical infections as a result of unilateral mandibular odontodysplasia. With a 6-year follow-up, this is the longest documented case of regional odontodysplasia treated by tooth autotransplantation.

Regional odontodysplasia. Report of two cases

Two cases of regional odontodysplasia in girls are reported; one affected the lower incisors, and the other the left maxilla. The first case was radiographically followed over a 6-year period, during which time the ghost teeth exhibited significant dentin formation, along with a resultant decrease in pulp size and relative normalization of the radicular anatomy. The second case involved the deciduous molars and the first permanent molar. In addition to tooth alterations, both cases exhibited many odontogenic epithelial islands and extensive areas of calcification in the mucosa. Diagnosis, causes, and treatment are discussed in the light of recent data.

Odontodysplasia, gingival manifestations, and accompanying abnormalities

Regional odontodysplasia is an uncommon developmental dental disorder that may occasionally be accompanied by other abnormalities. A case is described in which the chief report was of a gingival enlargement arising in a female patient who also had dolichocephaly, thin calvarium, clinodactyly and transverse grooving of her fingernails, and a history of abnormal hair. Previously suggested etiologic factors and cases reported in association with other abnormalities are reviewed.
