Abstract
A dinickel(II) complex of the ligand 1,3-bis(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propan-2-ol (HL1) has been prepared and characterized to generate a functional model for nickel(II) phosphoesterase enzymes. The complex, [Ni2(L1)(μ-OAc)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·H2O, was characterized by microanalysis, X-ray crystallography, UV-visible, and IR absorption spectroscopy and solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements. Susceptibility studies show that the complex is antiferromagnetically coupled with the best fit parameters J = -27.4 cm-1, g = 2.29, D = 28.4 cm-1, comparable to corresponding values measured for the analogous dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L1)(μ-OAc)](ClO4)2·0.5 H2O (J = -14.9 cm-1 and g = 2.16). Catalytic measurements with the diNi(II) complex using the substrate bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) demonstrated activity toward hydrolysis of the phosphoester substrate with K m ~10 mM, and k cat ~0.025 s-1. The combination of structural and catalytic studies suggests that the likely mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack on the substrate by a terminal nucleophilic hydroxido moiety.

Abstract
A new class of phenol based unsymmetrical side-off tetra and hexa coordinate homobinuclear Cu(II) and heterobinuclear Cu(II)-Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. The electronic spectra of all the complexes show "Red shift" in LMCT band, for the ligand H(2)L(2) compared to that of the ligand H(2)L(1) due to the relatively higher electron donating nature of their substitutents. The homobinuclear Cu(II) complexes (1 and 2) illustrate an antiferromagnetic interaction (μ(eff): 1.58 and 1.60BM) at 298K with a broad EPR signal. Variable temperature magnetic moment study of the binuclear copper (II) complexes shows that the extent of antiferromagnetic coupling is greater in the case of H(2)L(2) complexes than H(2)L(1) complexes (-2J values: 192cm(-1) and 184cm(-1) respectively). The heterobinuclear Cu(II)-Zn(II) complexes (3 and 4) have a magnetic moment value close to the spin only value with four hyperfine EPR signals. Electrochemical studies of the complexes reveal that all the binuclear complexes show two irreversible one-electron transfer reduction waves in the cathodic region. There is an "anodic shift" in the first reduction potential of the complexes, of the ligand H(2)L(1) when compared to that of the ligand H(2)L(2) due to the presence of relatively higher electron donating N-substituents in the later case than in the former case. The catecholase activity of the complexes reveals that the homobinuclear Cu(II) complexes show higher catalytic activity than the corresponding heterobinuclear Cu(II)-Zn(II) complexes. In the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate, the heterobinuclear Cu(II)-Zn(II) complexes show better catalytic activity than the corresponding homobinuclear Cu(II) complexes.

Abstract
Two new ligands consisting of bis(oxime) amine units tethered by a bridge have been synthesized. Their nickel chloride and nickel nitrate complexes have also been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, FTIR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. One of these ligands, L1 (N,N,N',N'-tetra(1-propan-2-onyl oxime)-diamino-m-xylene), is always dinucleating, while the other ligand, L2 (N,N,N',N'-tetra(1-propan-2-onyl-oxime)-1,3-diaminopropane), shows an unusual anion dependence on the nuclearity. When nickel chloride is used, the ligand acts in a dinucleating manner and coordinates two nickels; however, when nickel nitrate is used, the ligand acts in a monodentate fashion and coordinates only one nickel. Once the mononuclear complex is formed, it is not possible to add a second nickel if Ni(NO(3))(2) is used as the nickel source; it is possible, however, to add a second nickel if NiCl(2) is used as the nickel source. The dinuclear complex can be converted to the mononuclear one by either using silver nitrate to exchange the chloride anions for nitrates or by dissolving the complex in water.
