Abstract
surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of gases has always been difficult due to the low affinity and poor Raman cross section of the moving molecules. To mitigate the impact of these problems on detection of gases, a structure of zinc oxide/silver nanowires coated with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZnO NWs/Ag/ZIF-8) was constructed on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber membrane (PVDF/ZnO NWs/Ag/ZIF-8) and in detail researched in this work. Benefitting from the quadruple synergistic effect of efficient Knudsen diffusion of gas molecules inside ZIF-8, enrichment of ZIF-8 microsponges for gaseous molecules, regulation of ZIF-8 dielectric layer for light and reverse light scattering of ZnO NW/Ag tip, the structure was proven to have precise co-confinement on both hot spots and gaseous molecules. As a result, this PVDF/ZnO NWs/Ag/ZIF-8 achieved excellent detection for hydrogen sulfide (H2S), with a limit of detection of 1 × 10-10 v/v and the minimum relative standard deviation value of ca. 7.13 %. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, in practical application, we designed and assembled our substrate (3.5 cm × 3.5 cm) into a SERS face mask and realized efficient monitoring of H2S in human's exhaled breath.

Abstract
Gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) exhibit broad fluorescent spectra from visible to near-infrared regions and good enzyme-mimicking catalytic activities. Combined with excellent stability and exceptional biocompatibility, the Au NCs have been widely exploited in biomedicine such as biocatalysis and bioimaging. Especially, the long fluorescence lifetime and large Stokes shift attribute Au NCs to good probes for fluorescence sensing and biological detection. In this review, we systematically summarized the molecular structure and fluorescence properties of Au NCs and highlighted the advances in fluorescence sensing and biological detection. The Au NCs display high sensitivity and specificity in detecting iodine ions, metal ions, and reactive oxygen species, as well as certain diseases based on the fluorescence activities of Au NCs. We also proposed several points to improve the practicability and accelerate the clinical translation of the Au NCs.

Abstract
A mesoporous Eu3+-doped zinc/silicate phosphor with a large surface area (>100 m2g-1) and amorphous structure was prepared in an aqueous solution without using any organic template. The residual concentration of the Zn2+ ion in the filtrate is lower than the standard of effluent 3.5 ppm under a pH 8-11 preparation condition. When a sulfide ion (S2-) is present in aqueous solution, the phosphor can react with the sulfide ion to transform from the amorphous structure to the crystalline ZnS, which causes structural transformation and a subsequent decrease in luminescent intensity. This distinct phosphor with a high surface area and amorphous structure can be applied through the structure transformation mechanism for highly selective and sensitive detection of the sulfide ions at low concentrations. In addition, the luminescent efficiency was obtained from adjustments in the pH value, calcination temperature, and Eu3+ ion concentration. The quenching efficiency, the limit of detection (CLOD), S2- ion selectivity, and phosphor regeneration ability were systematically explored in sulfide ion detection tests. Due to the novel S2- ion-induced structural transformation, we found that the amorphous Eu3+-doped zinc/silicate phosphors demonstrate a CLOD sensitivity as low as 1.8 × 10-7 M and a high Stern-Volmer constant (KSV) of 3.1 × 104 M-1. Furthermore, the phosphors were easily regenerated through simple calcination at 500 °C and showed a KSV value of 1.4 × 104 M-1. Overall, the Eu3+-doped zinc/silicates showed many advantageous properties for detecting sulfide ions, including low toxicity, green synthesis, good selectivity, high sensitivity, and good renewability.

Abstract
To ensure real-time validity of the detection of unstable toxic environmental pollutants, such as dissolved sulfides, we developed a portable on-site rapid analysis instrument. Through novel design of the color sensor chip-based core sensing components and the conversion between color signal and absorbance by Lambert's law, the instrument showed great performance for rapid (within 3 min) and sensitive on-site detection of sulfides in the environment. It is easy to achieve user-friendly, sample in-answer out, one-stop operation due to the touch-screen-integrated user interface of the instrument's data terminal. The detection limit of this method is 2.24 μg/L, the linear operation range is 0-1000 μg/L, and the coefficient of determination is 0.999. This instrument has been successfully applied to the on-site determination of sulfides in the Yellow River Delta and the Yantai Guangdang River in China. The portable instrument showed excellent anti-interference, good stability, and simple operation, which showed great prospects for the on-site rapid analysis of unstable targets in the environment.

Abstract
Dissolved sulfide tends to species transformation and loss upon leaving the matrix, thus the development of a practical on-site determination of sulfide is crucial for environmental monitoring and human health. In this work, a novel paper-based ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed for the field analysis of sulfide, which system was constructed by the inner filter effect (IFE) of CdS quantum dots (QDs) toward carbon dots (C-dots). Instead of an aqueous phase system, the conversion of sulfide to its hydride would induce the in-situ formation of CdS QDs on the paper, which acted as an energy acceptor to quench the emission of C-dots, leading to a variation of ratiometric fluorescence from blue to yellow with the increasing concentration of sulfide. Moreover, we proposed a smartphone-based fluorescence capture device integrated with a programmed Python program, accomplishing both color recognition and accurate detection of sulfide. Under the optimal condition, this ratiometric fluorescence sensor allowed for the on-site analysis of sulfide with a limit of detection of 0.05 μM. The accuracy of the sensor was validated via the successful field analysis of environmental water samples with satisfactory recoveries. Compared to other fluorescence methods used for sulfide analysis, this developed system retains the advantages of label-free, low-cost, ease of operation, and miniaturization, showing great potential for the measurement of sulfide on-site, as well as environmental monitoring.

Abstract
A novel ratiometric fluorescence strategy for sulfide ions (S2-) analysis has been developed using metal-organic framework (MOF)-based nanozyme. NH2-Cu-MOF displays blue fluorescence (λem = 435 nm) originating from 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid ligand. Besides, it possesses oxidase-like activity due to Cu2+ node, which can trigger chromogenic reaction. o-Phenylenediamine (OPD), as a common enzyme substrate, can be oxidized by NH2-Cu-MOF to form luminescent products (oxOPD) (λem = 570 nm). Inner filter effect occurs between oxOPD and MOF. Upon exposure to S2-, oxidase-like activity of MOF is depressed significantly because of the generation of CuS. On one hand, the amount of free Cu2+ decreases, affecting the yielding of oxOPD. On the other hand, CuNPs with larger size are obtained during the oxidation-reduction reaction between Cu2+ and OPD, which show weaker autocatalytic ability for OPD oxidation. These result in the decrease and increase of intensities at 570 and 435 nm, respectively. This method exhibits sensitive and selective responses towards S2- with LOD of 0.1 μM. Furthermore, such ratiometric strategy has been applied to detect S2- in food samples.

Abstract
In this work, through the orthogonal design of two fluorophores and two recognition groups, a series of fluorescent probes were developed from the flavone derivatives for hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The probe FlaN-DN stood out from the primarily screening on the selectivity and response intensities. It could respond to H2S with both the chromogenic and fluorescent signals. Among the recent reported probes for the H2S detection, FlaN-DN indicated the most highlighted advantages including the rapid response (within 200 s) and the high response multiplication (over 100 folds). FlaN-DN was sensitive to the pH condition, thus could be applied to distinguish the cancer micro-environment. Moreover, FlaN-DN suggested practical capabilities including a wide linear range (0-400 μM), a relatively high sensitivity (limit of detection 0.13 μM), and high selectivity towards H2S. As a low cytotoxic probe, FlaN-DN achieved the imaging in living HeLa cells. FlaN-DN could detect the endogenous generation H2S and visualize the dose-dependent responses to the exogenous H2S level. This work provided a typical case of natural-sourced derivatives as functional implements, which might inspire the future investigations.

Abstract
A highly structured fluorescent-SERS dual-probe nanocomposites were synthesized for the determination of sulfur-containing gases in water and beer samples. Initially, Au@Ag NPs were prepared by growing the Ag shell on the Au core in situ, modified with surfactant and fabricated with Zn2+. Then, MOF-5-NH2 assembled Au@Ag NPs were obtained through coordination between Zn sites and 2-aminoterephthalic acid. The principle was based on redox reaction between H2S and Au@Ag NPs, and the fluorescence turn-on effects were due to the charge transfer between SO2 and amino groups. The SERS intensity was related to the concentration of H2S (5 ∼ 60 nM), and an ultra-low detection limit of 2.26 nM was achieved. Importantly, the fluorescence performance was applied for SO2 analysis and exhibited good linear response. Moreover, the platform for H2S and SO2 in real samples revealed satisfactory results (95.6 ∼ 101.6% and 99.0 ∼ 104.4%). Therefore, the proposed system offered a precise detection of H2S/SO2 in food/environmental settings.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule, is involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. H2S has been proven to play a beneficial role in lung diseases, and the relationship between perturbations in endogenous H2S synthesis and degree with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has attacted increasing attention. However, the changes in endogenous lung H2S levels in the pathological progression of chronic pulmonary diseases remain unclear. To this end, we synthesized a fluorescent probe (Bcy-HS) for the selective imaging of H2S in living cells and mice. This probe was mainly used for in situ in vivo and cellular imaging as well as a systematic assessment of intrapulmonary H2S levels at different stages of IPF. In addition, we also discussed the potential of H2S supplementation in the treatment of pulmonary fibrotic diseases. Our results confirmed the key role of H2S in pulmonary fibrosis. In cellular and mice models of pulmonary fibrosis, intracellular H2S levels are reduced. However, the severity of oxidative damage and pulmonary fibrosis decreased after NaSH (H2S donor). Therefore, we concluded that increasing the H2S content in vivo may be a novel strategy for IPF treatment.

Abstract
The development of reliable probes for in vivo detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) with high sensitivity and selectivity is of great significance due to its key roles in many pathological and physiological processes. Herein, it was found that H2S could finely regulate surface structure of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) through reduction of surface Au(I)-ligand motifs and further quench their fluorescence by a two-stage kinetic reaction process. Stage I showed the H2S-assisted surface Au(I)-ligand reduction and Au(0) core growth with a rapid fluorescence decrease; stage II showed the surface structure optimization and reconstruction with a relatively slow fluorescence quenching. By virtue of the excellent fluorescence response of AuNCs to H2S, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe (RBDA) for sensing H2S was designed through electrostatic attraction-induced fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between AuNCs and rhodamine B. The probe was facilely prepared, showing a straightforward, rapid ratiometric fluorescence response to H2S with built-in self-calibration. It presented the high detection sensitivity with a detection limit (LOD) of 56 nM and an excellent sensing selectivity for H2S over various other biological species. The probe was demonstrated to possess high biostability, low cytotoxicity, good cell and issue penetrability, and favorable biocompatibility. It realizes successful monitoring of both exogenous and endogenous H2S levels in living cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a vital endogenous gas signal molecule undertaking numerous physiological functions such as biological regulation and cytoprotection. Herein, we developed an electrochemical (EC) and photothermal (PT) dual-readout signals method for H2S detection based on a novel biosynthesis-mediated Ni-Fe-Cu LDH-to-sulfides transformation strategy. Interestingly, the Cu2+-based Ni-Fe LDH (Ni-Fe-Cu LDH) can act as the Cu2+ source to react with H2S, resulting in the in-situ generation of CuxS on Ni-Fe-Cu LDH surfaces. Because of the EC signal and intrinsic near-infrared (NIR) PT conversion ability of CuxS under 808 nm laser irradiation, the obtained CuxS@Ni-Fe-Cu LDH is applied to stimulate EC signal and temperature readout. By this means, a dual-readout signal mode is established for H2S detection. Under the optimum conditions, this combination of EC and PT methods displays a wide linear range for H2S to 0.1 μM-90 μM and 50 μM-400 μM, respectively, with a low detection limit of 0.09 μM. In addition, the practicality of Ni-Fe-Cu LDH is verified by determination of endogenous H2S in living cells. This work not only provides a promising application for H2S diagnosis but also exhibits the new characteristic of Ni-Fe-Cu LDH nanomaterials as signal transduction tags.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as an important biological gasotransmitter plays a pivotal role in many physiological and pathological processes. The sensitive and quantitative detection of H2S level is therefore crucial for precise diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of various diseases but remains a huge challenge due to the lack of accurate and reliable analytical methods in vivo. In this work, we report a smart, H2S-responsive and depleting nanoplatform (ZNNPs) for quantitative and real-time imaging of endogenous H2S for early diagnosis and treatment of H2S-associated diseases. We show that ZNNPs exhibit unexpected NIR conversion (F1070 → F720) and ratiometric photoacoustic (PA680/PA900) signal responsiveness towards H2S, allowing for sensitive and quantitative visualization of H2S in acute hepatotoxicity, cerebral hemorrhage model as well as colorectal tumors in living mice. ZNNPs@FA simultaneously scavenges the mitochondrial H2S in tumors leading to significant ATP reduction and severe mitochondrial damage, together with the activated photodynamic effect, resulting in efficient suppression of colorectal tumor growth in mice. We believe that this platform may provide a powerful tool for studying the vital impacts of H2S in related diseases.

Abstract
Calorimetric chemosensors are found to be advantageous sensing systems due to their simplicity and favorable responsive properties. Although some colorimetric probes have been reported to detect hydrogen sulfide (H2 S), the creation of rapid, highly selective, and sensitive probes for the detection of H2 S remains a challenging target. In this work, we established dinitrosulphonamide decorated phenanthridine, 2,4-dinitro-N-(4-(7,8,13,14-tetrahydrodibenzo[a, i]phenanthridin-5-yl)phenyl)benzenesulfonamide (PHSH), for the calorimetric detection of H2 S. H2 S triggered thiolysis of PHSH resulted in a marked absorption enhancement alongside a visual color change from colorless to dark yellow. The result indicated that the chemosensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity with a fast response of less than 10 s with a detection limit as low as 6.5 nM. The chemosensor reaction mechanism with H2 S was studied by UV-vis, 1 H NMR, mass and HPLC analysis. In addition, the chemosensor has been used for the determination of H2 S in many real-time samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), proved to be potential carcinogenic threats to human health, have received great concerns in food field. It was essential to develop effective methods to detect EDCs in food samples. The present study proposed an efficient method to determine trace EDCs including estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3) and bisphenol A (BPA) based on magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in meat samples. RESULTS Fe3 O4 @COF(TpBD)/TiO2 nanocomposites were synthesized via functionalization of magnetic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanoparticles, and used as absorbents of MSPE to enrich EDCs. The efficient EDCs enrichment relies on π-π stacking interaction, hydrogen bonding, and the interaction between titanium ions (IV, Ti4+ ) and hydroxyl groups in EDCs, which improves the selectivity and sensitivity. Under the optimized conditions, target EDCs were rapidly extracted through MSPE with 5 min. Combining Fe3 O4 @COF(TpBD)/TiO2 based MSPE and HPLC-MS/MS to determine EDCs, good linearities were observed with correlation coefficient (R2 ) ≥ 0.9989. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were 0.13-0.41 μg kg-1 and 0.66-1.49 μg kg-1 , respectively. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to real samples analysis. CONCLUSIONS The established MSPE-HPLC-MS/MS method was successfully applied to determine EDCs in meat samples with rapidness, improved selectivity and sensitivity. It shows great prospects for EDCs detection in other complicated matrices. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide is typical metabolic marker and environmental pollutant which is worthwhile to determine. Herein, a low background and high sensitivity fluorescent strategy based on double modifications of metal organic framework material CAU-10-NH2 is proposed for the determination of hydrogen sulfide. Firstly, a functional monomer 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid is employed to modify on the CAU-10-NH2, the product CAU-10-NH-dAba has strong fluorescent performance at 412 nm under an excitation wavelength of 320 nm. Subsequently, it is further modified by the azide group to form CAU-10-NH-dAba-N3. This azidation inhibits the fluorescent signal. However, in the presence of hydrogen sulfide, the azide group is specifically reduced to amidogen, and results in the recovery of the fluorescence. The CAU-10-NH-DABA-N3 was characterized by solid state NMR, XPS, fluorescence, IR, XRD, SEM and specific surface area. After the optimization of pH value, temperature and interaction time, the detection results of hydrogen sulfide demonstrate the linear range of this strategy is from 20 to 140 nM with a detection limit of 1.51 nM, which is significantly better than that of the CAU-10-NH2 merely modified by 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid. Meanwhile, the satisfactory assay results of hydrogen sulfide in serum sample and Pearl river water suggest a potential application prospect of this strategy in clinical diagnosis and environment monitoring.

Abstract
Forensic science requires a fast, sensitive, and anti-interfering imaging tool for on-site investigation and bio-analysis. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon exhibits remarkable luminescence properties (large Stokes shift, diverse molecular structures, and high photo-stability), which can provide a viable solution for on-site analysis, while at the same time overcoming the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Based on the outstanding performance in chemical analysis and bio-sensing, AIE materials have great prospects in the field of forensic science. Therefore, the application of AIE in forensic science has been summarized for the first time in this article. After a brief introduction to the concept and development of AIE, its applications in the determination of toxic or hazardous substances, based on data on poisoning deaths, has been summarized. Subsequently, besides the bio-imaging function, other applications of AIE in analyzing markers related to forensic genetics, forensic pathology, (focusing on the corpse) and clinical forensics (focusing on the living) have been discussed. In addition, applications of AIE molecules in criminal investigations, including recognition of fingerprints and blood stains, detection of explosives and chemical warfare agents, and anti-counterfeiting have also been presented. It is hoped that this review will light up the future of forensic science by stimulating more research work on the suitability of AIE materials in advancing forensic science.
