Fabrication of a Carbonized Cellulose Nanofibrils/Ti3C2Tx MXene/g-C3N4 Heterojunction for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis

Enhancing photocatalytic destruction of lignin via cellulose derived carbon quantum dots/g-C3N4 heterojunctions

Lignocellulosic biomass exhibits a promising potential for production of carbon materials. Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots (N,P-CQDs) were fabricated via (NH4)2HPO4 assisted hydrothermal treatment of cellulose pulp fibers. The as-prepared N,P-CQDs were characterized by HRTEM, FTIR, fluorescence and UV-vis, and then incorporated into g-C3N4 (CN) through sonication and liquid deposition, forming N,P-CQDs/sonication treated g-C3N4 (C-SCN) composites, which were then explored as photocatalysts. The photocatalytic ability of C-SCN towards model lignin was further analyzed. The results showed that, the fluorescence intensity and photoluminescence performance of N,P-CQDs were much higher than that of CQDs; the heterojunction was successfully constructed between the composites of N,P-CQDs and SCN; the incorporation of N,P-CQDs enhanced the visible light absorption, but reduced the band gap of the composite heterojunction; the resultant photocatalysts exhibited a good photocatalytic ability of model lignin via catalyze the fracture of β-O-4' ether bond and CC bond, i.e., the photocatalytic degradation ratio reached up to 95.5 %; and the photocatalytic reaction generated some valuable organics such as phenyl formate, benzaldehyde, and benzoic acid. This study would promote the high value-added utilization of lignocellulosic resources especially in the transformation of lignin, conforming the concept of sustainable development.

Composites of W18O49 Nanowires with g-C3N4/RGO Nanosheets for Broadband Light-Driven Photocatalytic Wastewater Purification

Developing a photocatalyst that can effectively utilize the full solar spectrum remains a high-priority objective in the ongoing pursuit of efficient light-to-chemical energy conversion. Herein, the ternary nanocomposite g-C3N4/RGO/W18O49 (CN/RGO/WO) was constructed and characterized by a variety of techniques. Remarkably, under the excitation of photon energies ranging from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR) region, the photocatalytic performance of the CN/RGO/WO nanocomposite exhibited a significant enhancement compared with single component g-C3N4 or W18O49 nanosheets for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). The MO photodegradation rate of the optimal CN/1.0 wt% RGO/45.0 wt% WO catalyst reached 0.816 and 0.027 min-1 under UV and visible light excitation, respectively. Even under low-energy NIR light, which is not sufficient to excite g-C3N4, the MO degradation rate can still reach 0.0367 h-1, exhibiting a significant enhancement than pure W18O49. The outstanding MO removal rate and stability were demonstrated by CN/RGO/WO nanocomposites, which arise from the synergistic effect of localized surface plasmon resonance effect induced by W18O49 under vis-NIR excitation and the Z-scheme nanoheterojunction of W18O49 and g-C3N4. In this work, we have exploited the great potential of integrating nonmetallic plasmonic nanomaterials and good conductor RGO to construct high-performance g-C3N4-based full-solar spectral broadband photocatalysts.

In Situ Fabrication of an S-Scheme NaNbO3/Bi2O2CO3 Heterojunction for Enhanced Performance in Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

In this study, NaNbO3 microcubes were introduced during the preparation of Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets to construct a series of NaNbO3/Bi2O2CO3 heterojunctions with varying NaNbO3 content. Their photoactivities for N2 fixation were examined and compared. Results demonstrated that 7.5% NaNbO3/Bi2O2CO3 had the highest photoactivity. The NH3 production rate under simulated solar light is 453.1 μmol L-1 g-1 h-1, representing 2.0 and 3.8-fold increases compared to those of Bi2O2CO3 and NaNbO3, respectively. A comprehensive investigation encompassing the physical and chemical properties of the NaNbO3/Bi2O2CO3 photocatalyst was conducted. Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets were discovered to be distributed on the NaNbO3 microcubes surface. The addition of NaNbO3 exhibited nearly no effect on the photoabsorption performance and specific surface area of the Bi2O2CO3. However, the tight contact between NaNbO3 and Bi2O2CO3 and their appropriate band positions led to the formation of a heterojunction structure between them. The electron drift occurring in the interface region induces the creation of an internal electric field and energy band bending. This facilitates the transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes through an S-scheme mechanism, achieving efficient separation without compromising the redox performance. As a result, the NaNbO3/Bi2O2CO3 composite exhibits exceptional performance in the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reaction. This study expands the application of S-scheme photocatalysts in the field of N2 reduction and provides insights into the preparation of efficient S-scheme photocatalysts.

Fabrication of Cellulose Filters Incorporating Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Nicotine Adsorption from Cigarette Smoke

To prevent negative effects of smoking, there is constant research on the development of various types of sustainable filter materials, capable of removing toxic compounds present in cigarette smoke. Because of the extraordinary porosity and adsorption properties, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent promising adsorbents for volatile toxic molecules such as nicotine. This study reports new hybrid materials wherein six types of common MOFs of different porosity and particle size are incorporated into sustainable cellulose fiber from bamboo pulp, resulting in a series of cellulose filter samples abbreviated as MOF@CF. The obtained hybrid cellulose filters were fully characterized and investigated in nicotine adsorption from cigarette smoke, using a specially designed experimental setup. The results revealed that the UiO-66@CF material features the best mechanical performance, facile recyclability, and excellent nicotine adsorption efficiency that attains 90% with relative standard deviations lower than 8.80%. This phenomenon may be caused by the large pore size, open metal sites, and high loading of UiO-66 in cellulose filters. Additionally, the high adsorption capacity showed almost 85% removal of nicotine after the third adsorption cycle. The DFT calculation methods allowed further investigation of the nicotine adsorption mechanism, showing that the energy difference between HOMO and LUMO for UiO-66 was the closest to that of nicotine, which further proves the adsorption ability of nicotine by this material. Owing to the flexibility, recyclability, and excellent adsorption performance, the prepared hybrid MOF@CF materials may find prospective applications in nicotine adsorption from cigarette smoke.

Recent advances in the development of MXenes/cellulose based composites: A review

Over the past few years, transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, commonly referred to as MXenes have been discovered and utilized quickly in a range of technical fields due to their distinctive and controlled characteristics. MXenes are a new class of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have found extensive use in a variety of fields, including energy storage, catalysis, sensing, biology, and other scientific disciplines. This is because of their exceptional mechanical and structural characteristics, metal electrical conductivity, and other outstanding physical and chemical properties. In this contribution, we review recent cellulose research advances and show that MXene hybrids are effective composites that benefit from cellulose superior water dispersibility and the electrostatic attraction between cellulose and MXene to prevent MXene accumulation and improve the composite's mechanical properties. Electrical, materials, chemical, mechanical, environmental, and biomedical engineering are all fields in which cellulose/MXene composites are used. These properties and applications-based reviews on MXene/cellulose composite, critically analyze the results and accomplishments in these fields and provide context for potential future research initiatives. It examines newly reported applications for cellulose nanocomposites assisted by MXene. To support their development and future applications, perspectives and difficulties are suggested in the conclusion.

Potassium-Derived Charge Channels in Boron-Doped g-C3N4 Nanosheets for Photocatalytic NO Oxidation and Hydrogen Evolution

The application of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) in photocatalytic NO oxidation was limited due to severe recombination of photogenerated carriers and low concentration of oxidizing species. In this work, K and B were introduced into the interlayer and in-plane framework of g-C3N4 to address this challenge through the thermal polymerization process. The synthesized K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited expanded light absorption and low charge recombination efficiency. In addition, the doping of K and B reduced the band gap of g-C3N4, which corresponded to enhanced light absorption. B was introduced into the in-plane structure by replacing C atoms, which adjusted the in-plane electron distribution. K was inserted into the interlayer by binding to the N and C atoms of adjacent layers. K-derived electron transfer channels were constructed, which increased electron delocalization and expanded the π-conjugate system. More electrons were transferred through the interlayer channels and were involved in the reaction process. The severe carrier recombination and weak transfer were improved due to the synergistic effect of K and B doping. K-doped B-g-C3N4 nanosheets exhibited enhanced generation of superoxide radicals and hydroxyl radicals, which played a key role during NO oxidation. The photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency of codoped g-C3N4 nanosheets reached 61%, which was 2.1 and 1.2 times of that of pristine g-C3N4 and B-doped g-C3N4, respectively. The codoped g-C3N4 sample still exhibited stable photocatalytic NO oxidation efficiency after five cycles. This result provided a potential idea for improving the charge distribution and transfer of layered materials by codoping metallic and nonmetallic elements and for photocatalytic NO oxidation.
