Wetting Behavior of Inkjet-Printed Electronic Inks on Patterned Substrates

In inkjet printing technology, one important factor influencing the printing quality and reliability of printed films is the interaction of the jetted ink with the substrate surface. This short-range interaction determines the wettability and the adhesion of the ink to the solid surface and is hence responsible for the final shape of the deposited ink. Here, we investigate wetting morphologies of inkjet-printed inks on patterned substrates by carefully designed experimental test structures and simulations. The contact angles, the surface properties, and drop shapes, as well as their influence on the device variability, are experimentally and theoretically analyzed. For the simulations, we employ the phase-field method, which is based on the free energy minimization of the two-phase system with the given wetting boundary conditions. Through a systematic investigation of printed drops on patterned substrates consisting of hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas, we report that the printed morphology is related not only to the designed layout and the drop volume but also to the printing strategy and the wettability. Furthermore, we show how one can modify the intrinsic wettability of the patterned substrates to enhance the printing quality and reliability. Based on the present findings, we cast light on the improvement of the fabrication quality of thin film transistors.

Wetting dynamics under periodic switching on different scales: characterization and mechanisms

The development of substrates with a switchable wettability is proceeding and the limit of switching frequencies and contact angle differences between substrate states has developed in the past years. In this paper we investigate the behavior of a droplet on a homogeneous substrate, which is switched between two wettabilities for a large range of switching frequencies. Here, we are particularly interested in the dependence of the wetting behavior on the switching frequency. We show that results obtained on the particle level via molecular dynamics simulations and on the continuum level via the thin-film model are consistent. Predictions of simple models as the molecular theory of wetting (MKT) and analytical calculations based on the MKT also show good agreement and offer deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms.

How do chemical patterns affect equilibrium droplet shapes?

By utilizing a proposed analytical model in combination with the phase-field method, we present a comprehensive study on the effect of chemical patterns on equilibrium droplet morphologies. Here, three influencing factors, the droplet sizes, contact angles, and the ratios of the hydrophilic area to the hydrophobic area, are contemplated. In the analytical model, chemical heterogeneities are described by different non-linear functions. By tuning these functions and the related parameters, the analytical model is capable of calculating the energy landscapes of the system. The chemically patterned surfaces display complex energy landscapes with chemical-heterogeneity-induced local minima, which correspond to the equilibrium morphologies of the droplets. Phase-field (PF) simulations are accordingly conducted and compared with the predicted equilibrium morphologies. In addition, we propose a modified Cassie-Baxter (CB) model to delineate the equilibrium droplet shapes. In contrast to the classic CB model, our extension is not only restricted to the shape with a spherical cap. Both the energy landscape method and the modified CB model are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the PF simulations.

Investigation of Equilibrium Droplet Shapes on Chemically Striped Patterned Surfaces Using Phase-Field Method

We systematically investigate the equilibrium shapes of droplets deposited on a set of chemically striped patterned surfaces by using an Allen?Cahn-type phase-field model. Varying the widths of the stripes d, the volume V, as well as the initial positions of the droplets, we release the droplets on the top of the surfaces and observe the final droplet shapes. It is found that there are either one or two equilibrium shapes for a fixed ratio of d/ V^1/3 and each equilibrium shape corresponds to an energy minimum state. The aspect ratio of the droplets ? shows a periodic oscillation behavior with a decreasing amplitude as d/ V^1/3 decreases, similar to the stick?slip?jump movement of a slowly condensing droplet on a chemically striped patterned surface. Additionally, by comparing the movements of slowly evaporating and condensing droplets, we have observed a hysteresis phenomenon, which reveals that the final shapes of droplets also rely on the moving paths. Through modifying the dynamic contact angle boundary condition, the contact line movements of droplets under condensation and evaporation, which are far from equilibrium, are addressed.

Dynamical Density Functional Theory for the Evaporation of Droplets of Nanoparticle Suspension

We develop a lattice gas model for the drying of droplets of a nanoparticle suspension on a planar surface, using dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) to describe the time evolution of the solvent and nanoparticle density profiles. The DDFT assumes a diffusive dynamics but does not include the advective hydrodynamics of the solvent, so the model is relevant to highly viscous or near to equilibrium systems. Nonetheless, we see an equivalent of the coffee-ring stain effect, but in the present model it occurs for thermodynamic rather the fluid-mechanical reasons. The model incorporates the effect of phase separation and vertical density variations within the droplet and the consequence of these on the nanoparticle deposition pattern on the surface. We show how to include the effect of slip or no-slip at the surface and how this is related to the receding contact angle. We also determine how the equilibrium contact angle depends on the microscopic interaction parameters.

Using evaporation to control capillary instabilities in micro-systems

The instabilities of fluid interfaces represent both a limitation and an opportunity for the fabrication of small-scale devices. Just as non-uniform capillary pressures can destroy micro-electrical mechanical systems (MEMS), so they can guide the assembly of novel solid and fluid structures. In many such applications the interface appears during an evaporation process and is therefore only present temporarily. It is commonly assumed that this evaporation simply guides the interface through a sequence of equilibrium configurations, and that the rate of evaporation only sets the timescale of this sequence. Here, we use Lattice-Boltzmann simulations and a theoretical analysis to show that, in fact, the rate of evaporation can be a factor in determining the onset and form of dynamical capillary instabilities. Our results shed light on the role of evaporation in previous experiments, and open the possibility of exploiting diffusive mass transfer to directly control capillary flows in MEMS applications.

Films, layers, and droplets: The effect of near-wall fluid structure on spreading dynamics

We present a study of the spreading of liquid droplets on a solid substrate at very small scales. We focus on the regime where effective wetting energy (binding potential) and surface tension effects significantly influence steady and spreading droplets. In particular, we focus on strong packing and layering effects in the liquid near the substrate due to underlying density oscillations in the fluid caused by attractive substrate-liquid interactions. We show that such phenomena can be described by a thin-film (or long-wave or lubrication) model including an oscillatory Derjaguin (or disjoining or conjoining) pressure and explore the effects it has on steady droplet shapes and the spreading dynamics of droplets on both an adsorption (or precursor) layer and completely dry substrates. At the molecular scale, commonly used two-term binding potentials with a single preferred minimum controlling the adsorption layer height are inadequate to capture the rich behavior caused by the near-wall layered molecular packing. The adsorption layer is often submonolayer in thickness, i.e., the dynamics along the layer consists of single-particle hopping, leading to a diffusive dynamics, rather than the collective hydrodynamic motion implicit in standard thin-film models. We therefore modify the model in such a way that for thicker films the standard hydrodynamic theory is realized, but for very thin layers a diffusion equation is recovered.

Nanostructure Formation by controlled dewetting on patterned substrates: A combined theoretical, modeling and experimental study

We perform systematic two-dimensional energetic analysis to study the stability of various nanostructures formed by dewetting solid films deposited on patterned substrates. Our analytical results show that by controlling system parameters such as the substrate surface pattern, film thickness and wetting angle, a variety of equilibrium nanostructures can be obtained. Phase diagrams are presented to show the complex relations between these system parameters and various nanostructure morphologies. We further carry out both phase field simulations and dewetting experiments to validate the analytically derived phase diagrams. Good agreements between the results from our energetic analyses and those from our phase field simulations and experiments verify our analysis. Hence, the phase diagrams presented here provide guidelines for using solid-state dewetting as a tool to achieve various nanostructures.
