Free-Standing Ultrafine Nanofiber Papers with High PM0.3 Mechanical Filtration Efficiency by Scalable Blow and Electro-Blow Spinning

Electroactive nanofibrous membrane with antibacterial and deodorizing properties for air filtration

Water vapor from respiration can severely accelerate the charge dissipation of the face mask, reducing filtration efficiency. Moreover, the foul odor from prolonged mask wear tends to make people remove their masks, leading to the risk of infection. In this study, an electro-blown spinning electroactive nanofibrous membrane (Zn/CB@PAN) with antibacterial and deodorization properties was prepared by adding zinc (Zn) and carbon black (CB) nanoparticles to the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, respectively. The filtration efficiency of Zn/CB@PAN for PM0.3 was > 99% and could still maintain excellent durability within 4 h in a high-humidity environment (25 ℃ and RH = 95%). Moreover, the bacterial interception rate of the Zn/CB@PAN could reach 99.99%, and it can kill intercepted bacteria. In addition, the deodorization rate of Zn/CB@PAN in the moist state for acetic acid was 93.75% and ammonia was 95.23%, respectively. The excellent filtering, antibacterial, and deodorizing performance of Zn/CB@PAN can be attributed to the synergistic effect of breath-induced Zn/CB galvanic couples' electroactivity, released metal ions, and generated reactive oxygen species. The developed Zn/CB@PAN could capture and kill airborne environmental pathogens under humid environments and deodorize odors from prolonged wear, holding promise for broad applications as personal protective masks.

One-step fabrication of polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous membranes with spider-web-like structure for high-efficiency PM0.3 capture

High-efficiency air filters are in high demand to protect human health from the threat of ultrafine particulate matters (PM). However, most commercial air filters are less effective for PM0.3 capture and/or still suffer from undesirable pressure drops. They are also typically petroleum-based. Herein, a double-jet synchronous electrospinning technology was demonstrated to fabricate spider-web-like polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous membranes (SPNM) in one step. The properties of spinning solutions were regulated to construct favorable multi-scale nanofiber and bead structures that mimicked the structural units in spider-webs. The as-prepared SPNM exhibited excellent filtration efficiency (99.87 %) and high quality factor (0.321 Pa-1) against the PM0.3, while presenting an attractively low pressure drop (19 Pa). Additionally, the filtration performance of SPNM was almost completely preserved during 10-cycle tests and the 6-month long-term tests, showing excellent function stability and durability. Benefiting from its good hydrophobicity (WCA = 143.2°), SPNM also presented a satisfactory filtration efficiency (>99.37 %) with low pressure drop (18 Pa) at an environment with humidity at 90 % against PM0.3. Furthermore, the unique structure increased the mechanical strength of SPNM, facilitating the processability for practical applications. Overall, this work may shed light on a promising approach for developing biomass-based, highly efficient filtration materials with hierarchical structures.

Research progress in preparation, properties, and applications of medical protective fiber materials

A variety of public health events seriously threaten human life and health, especially the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019 has caused a serious impact on human production and life. Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the most effective ways to prevent infection and stop the spread of the virus. Medical protective fiber materials have become the first choice for PPE because of their excellent barrier properties and breathability. In this article, we systematically review the latest progress in preparation technologies, properties, and applications of medical protective fiber materials. We first summarize the technological characteristics of different fiber preparation methods and compare their advantages and disadvantages. Then the barrier properties, comfort, and mechanical properties of the medical protective fiber materials used in PPE are discussed. After that, the applications of medical protective fibers in PPE are introduced, and protective clothing and masks are discussed in detail. Finally, the current status, future development trend, and existing challenges of medical protective fiber materials are summarized.

P(VDF-TrFE)/BaTiO3 Nanofibrous Membrane with Enhanced Piezoelectricity for High PM0.3 Filtration and Reusable Face Masks

In the background of air pollution and regular COVID-19 prevention, personal protective masks are necessary for our daily life. However, protective masks with high PM_0.3 filtration usually have poor air permeability and are mostly disposable, leading to a heavy burden on the environment. In this work, a reusable membrane based on piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanofibers embedded with BaTiO₃ nanoparticles (BTO NPs) was developed. The P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite nanofibers not only have enhanced piezoelectricity and surface polarity but also have reduced diameters that could be beneficial for electrostatic adhesion, pole-polar interactions, and mechanical sieving to increase the PM_0.3 capture capacity. Moreover, the BTO NPs also improved the charge storage capacity of the composite membrane, which could further enhance the PM_0.3 filtration efficiency after corona treatment. The piezoelectric mask based on P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite nanofibers has high filtration efficiencies of 96% for PM_0.3 and 98% for bacteria, while the pressure drop was only 182 Pa, which is lower than the commercial N95 standard of 343.2 Pa. Furthermore, the piezoelectric mask has a long and stable filtration performance after 5 cycles of 75% alcohol disinfection, demonstrating that the P(VDF-TrFE)/BTO composite membrane has a potential application in personal protective masks with comfortable and reusable properties.

Polyvinylidene fluoride multi-scale nanofibrous membrane modified using N-halamine with high filtration efficiency and durable antibacterial properties for air filtration

HYPOTHESIS

Particulate matter (PM) pollution and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have increased demand for protective masks. However, typical protective masks only intercept particles and produce peculiar odors if worn for extended periods owing to bacterial growth. Therefore, new protective materials with good filtration and antibacterial capabilities are required.

EXPERIMENTS

In this study, we prepared multi-scale polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous membranes for efficient filtration and durable antibacterial properties via N-halamine modification.

FINDINGS

The N-halamine-modified nanofibrous membrane (PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl) had sufficient active chlorine content (800 ppm), and the tensile stress and strain were improved compared with the original membrane, from 6.282 to 9.435 MPa and from 51.3 % to 56.4 %, respectively. To further improve the interception efficiency, ultrafine nanofibers (20-35 nm) were spun on PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes, and multi-scale PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes were prepared. These membranes exhibited good PM_0.3 interception (99.93 %), low air resistance (79 Pa), promising long-term PM_2.5 purification ability, and high bactericidal efficiency (>98 %). After ten chlorination cycles, the antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus exceeded 90 %; hence, the material demonstrated highly efficient filtration and repeatable antibacterial properties. The results of this study have implications for the development of air and water filtration systems and multi-functional protective materials.

Mass Production of Hierarchically Designed Engine-Intake Air Filters by Multinozzle Electroblow Spinning

Particulate matter damages engines of vehicles when blown into the ventilation system. Conventional engine-intake filter is cellulose microfiber board with an average diameter larger than ten microns, which has low removal efficiency of ultrafine particular matter. In this work, we apply ultrafine polyurethane nanofibers (∼122.8 nm) onto pleated cellulose board using scalable multinozzle electroblow spinning technology, which improves filtration efficiency of particulate matter with a diameter of less than 0.3 μm PM_0.3 greatly. The thermoplastic polyurethane 85A nanofiber membranes are transparent, and display superior filtration performance which meets up with the 95% filtration efficiency standard in GB 19083-2010 technical requirements for protective face mask for medical use. The lightweight pleated thermoplastic polyurethane/cellulose composites intercept ∼90% ultrafine PM_0.3 under airflow velocity of 32 L min^-1 and possess great resistance to shock. These hierarchically designed filters follow a mechanical mechanism and can be used in on-road and off-road cars in the long run.
