Influence of Metal Identity on Light-Induced Switchable Adsorption in Azobenzene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Halogen-modified metal-organic frameworks for efficient separation of alkane from natural gas

As a rich green energy source, natural gas is widely used in many fields such as the chemical industry, automobile energy, and daily life. However, it is very challenging to separate and recover C2H6 and C3H8 from natural gas. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as an emerging type of multi-pore porous materials show huge potential in gas adsorption separation. Herein, we report pillar-layered MOFs, Ni (BDC)(DABCO)0.5 (DMOF-X), modified by halogen atoms (F, Cl, Br), and investigate their CH4/C2H6/C3H8 separation performance. The experimental results show that DMOF-Cl exhibited a extremely high adsorption capacity for C3H8 and C2H6. Under the conditions of 298 K and 100 kPa, the adsorption capacities for C3H8 and C2H6 on DMOF-Cl are as high as 6.23 and 4.94 mmol g-1, which are superior to the values for most of the porous materials that have been reported. In addition, DMOF-Cl also shows high C3H8/CH4 (5: 85, V/V) and C2H6/CH4 (10: 85, V/V) separation selectivities, with values of 130.9 and 12.5, respectively. Finally, DMOF-Cl also demonstrated great potential as an adsorbent for separating C3H8/C2H6/CH4.

Design and Construction of an Azo-Functionalized POP for Reversibly Stimuli-Responsive CO2 Adsorption

A porous azo-functionalized organic polymer (JJU-2) was designed and prepared via oxidative coupling polymerization promoted by FeCl3. JJU-2 exhibited reversibly stimuli-responsive CO2 adsorption properties as a result of the trans/cis isomerization of the polymer’s azo-functionalized skeleton. Under UV irradiation and heat treatment, this porous material displayed various porous structures and CO2 adsorption properties. The initial Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of JJU-1 is 888 m2 g−1. After UV irradiation, the BET surface area decreases to 864 m2 g−1, along with the decrease of micropores around 0.50 nm and 1.27 nm during the trans-to-cis isomerization process. In addition, CO2 sorption isotherms demonstrate an 8%t decrease, and the calculated Qst of CO2 has decreased from 29.0 kJ mol−1 to 26.5 kJ mol−1 due to the trans to cis conversion of the azobenzene side group. It is noteworthy that JJU-2′s CO2 uptakes are nearly constant over three cycles of alternating external stimuli. Therefore, this azo-functionalized porous material was a potential carbon capture material that was responsive to stimuli.

Metal-Photoswitch Friendship: From Photochromic Complexes to Functional Materials

Cooperative metal-photoswitch interfaces comprise an application-driven field which is based on strategic coupling of metal cations and organic photochromic molecules to advance the behavior of both components, resulting in dynamic molecular and material properties controlled through external stimuli. In this Perspective, we highlight the ways in which metal-photoswitch interplay can be utilized as a tool to modulate a system's physicochemical properties and performance in a variety of structural motifs, including discrete molecular complexes or cages, as well as periodic structures such as metal-organic frameworks. This Perspective starts with photochromic molecular complexes as the smallest subunit in which metal-photoswitch interactions can occur, and progresses toward functional materials. In particular, we explore the role of the metal-photoswitch relationship for gaining fundamental knowledge of switchable electronic and magnetic properties, as well as in the design of stimuli-responsive sensors, optically gated memory devices, catalysts, and photodynamic therapeutic agents. The abundance of stimuli-responsive systems in the natural world only foreshadows the creative directions that will uncover the full potential of metal-photoswitch interactions in the coming years.

Pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH Composite as a Remarkable Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) represents a highly important electrochemical transformation in energy storage and conversion technologies. Considering the low rate of this four-electron half-reaction, there is a demand for efficient, stable, and noble-metal-free electrocatalysts to improve the kinetic and economical parameters. In this work, a new pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH nanocomposite based on a Co^II metal-organic framework (pillared-MOF) and heterometallic Ni/V-layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) was assembled via a simple protocol, characterized, and explored as an electrocatalyst in OER. A remarkable electrocatalytic efficiency of pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH in 1 M KOH is evidenced by a low overpotential (238 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 current density) and a small value of the Tafel slope (62 mV dec^-1). These parameters are very close to those of the reference IrO₂ electrocatalyst and are superior to the majority of the LDH- and MOF-based systems previously applied for OER. Excellent stability of pillared-MOF@NiV-LDH was confirmed by the chronopotentiometry tests for 70 h and linear-sweep voltammetry after 7000 cycles. Features such as rich electroactive sites, porous structure, high surface area, and synergic effect between pillared-MOF and NiV-LDH are likely responsible for the remarkable electrocatalytic efficiency of this electrocatalyst in OER. Despite prior reports on the application of NiV-LDH in OER, the present study describes the first example where this type of LDH is blended with MOF to generate a nanocomposite material. The interface between the two components of the composite can improve the electronic structure and, in turn, the electrocatalytic behavior. The introduction of this composite paves the way toward the synthesis of other multicomponent materials with potential applications in different energy fields.

Photoinduced movement: how photoirradiation induced the movements of matter

Pioneered by the success on active transport of ions across membranes in 1980 using the regulation of the binding properties of crown ethers with covalently linked photoisomerizable units, extensive studies on the movements by using varied interactions between moving objects and environments have been reported. Photoinduced movements of various objects ranging from molecules, polymers to microscopic particles were discussed from the aspects of the driving for the movements, materials design to achieve the movements and systems design to see and to utilize the movements are summarized in this review.

Hierarchically hollow N-doped carbon-cobalt nanoparticle heterointerface for efficient bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

The rational design and fabrication of high-performance and durable bifunctional non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are still a great challenge in the practical applications of rechargeable zinc-air (Zn-air) batteries. Herein, we report a simple yet robust route to synthesize cobalt nanoparticles rooted in the hierarchically hollow nitrogen-doped carbon frameworks (Co@HNCs). This strategy employs the pyrolysis of nanostructured hollow Co-based metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) precursors produced by selective linker cleaving with pyrazino(2,3-f)(1,10)phenanthroline-2,3-dicarboxylic acid molecules (H₂PPDA). The designed hierarchically architecture is favorable for the accessibility of the active sites in the catalyst, which affords enhanced bifunctional performance for ORR and OER. Moreover, when used as a cathode in liquid and all-solid-state Zn-air batteries, the resultant Co@HNCs delivers high efficiency and outstanding durability, even outperforming the benchmark Pt/C + RuO₂. This work provides a feasible design avenue to achieve advanced dual-phasic oxygen electrocatalyst and promotes the development of rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Phototriggered Desorption of Hydrogen, Ethylene, and Carbon Monoxide from a Cu(I)-Modified Covalent Organic Framework

Materials that are capable of adsorbing and desorbing gases near ambient conditions are highly sought after for many applications in gas storage and separations. While the physisorption of typical gases to high surface area covalent organic frameworks (COFs) occurs through relatively weak intermolecular forces, the tunability of framework materials makes them promising candidates for tailoring gas sorption enthalpies. The incorporation of open Cu(I) sites into framework materials is a proven strategy to increase gas uptake closer to ambient conditions for gases that are capable of π-back-bonding with Cu. Here, we report the synthesis of a Cu(I)-loaded COF with subnanometer pores and a three-dimensional network morphology, namely Cu(I)-COF-301. This study focused on the sorption mechanisms of hydrogen, ethylene, and carbon monoxide with this material under ultrahigh vacuum using temperature-programmed desorption and Kissinger analyses of variable ramp rate measurements. All three gases desorb near or above room temperature under these conditions, with activation energies of desorption (E _des) calculated as approximately 29, 57, and 68 kJ/mol, for hydrogen, ethylene, and carbon monoxide, respectively. Despite these strong Cu(I)-gas interactions, this work demonstrated the ability to desorb each gas on-demand below its normal desorption temperature upon irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) light. While thermal imaging experiments indicate that bulk photothermal heating of the COF accounts for some of the photodriven desorption, density functional theory calculations reveal that binding enthalpies are systematically lowered in the COF-hydrogen matrix excited state initiated by UV irradiation, further contributing to gas desorption. This work represents a step toward the development of more practical ambient temperature storage and efficient regeneration of sorbents for applications with hydrogen and π-accepting gases through the use of external photostimuli.

Rational Design of Smart Metal-Organic Frameworks for Light-Modulated Gas Transport

Smart metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are constructed by introducing stimuli-responsive functional groups into MOF platforms. Through membrane systems containing smart MOFs, external field-modulated gas transport can be achieved, which finds potential applications in chemical engineering. In this work, we design a series of Mg-MOF-74-III-based frameworks functionalized by arylazopyrazole groups. Methyleneamine chains with various lengths are attached to the photoresponsive azopyrazole moiety. Molecular dynamics simulations show that CO₂ diffusion can be remarkably changed by controlling the cis-to-trans isomerization of the functional unit due to the tunable adsorbate-adsorbent and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions of the two states. With the optimal length of the functional chain, the spatial hindrance and adsorbate-adsorbent interaction exhibit a synergetic effect to maximize the stimuli-responsive kinetic separation of N₂ over CO₂. This work provides a promising strategy for elevating smart MOFs' potential in gas separation.

Evaluation of Iron-Based Metal-Organic Framework Activation Temperatures in Acetylene Adsorption

One of the major issues regarding long-term human space exploration is the need for a breathable atmosphere. A major component toward achieving this goal is both the removal of exhaled carbon dioxide (CO₂) and the generation or recovery of oxygen (O₂). NASA's current technology only operates at about 50% efficiency due to the need to vent the methane that is produced during the CO₂ reduction process. One method of improving the efficiency of this process is through plasma pyrolysis, wherein the methane is pyrolyzed to produce hydrogen and various dehydrogenated carbon byproducts. In this process, acetylene is one of the main components of this byproduct stream. Unfortunately, while the concentration of this effluent is generally high in hydrogen (>90% typically), the presence of the acetylene waste product can act as a poison for the ruthenium-alumina catalyst used in the CO₂-reducing Sabatier process, requiring a removal step. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a valuable method for removing these unsaturated hydrocarbons due to their high tunability, particularly through the incorporation of open metal sites. In this study, two common iron-based MOFs, MIL-100 and PCN-250, were studied for their ability to adsorb acetylene. A combination of gas adsorption analysis and density functional theory calculation results shows the ability of these materials to undergo a thermal-induced reduction event, which results in an improvement in gas adsorption performance. This improvement in gas performance appears to be at least partially due to the increased presence of π-backbonding toward the acetylene molecules.
