Improving the Performance and Stability of Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes by a Polymeric Nanothick Interlayer-Assisted Grain Control Process

Hydrogels in Cutaneous Wound Healing: Insights into Characterization, Properties, Formulation and Therapeutic Potential

Hydrogels are polymeric materials that possess a set of characteristics meeting various requirements of an ideal wound dressing, making them promising for wound care. These features include, among others, the ability to absorb and retain large amounts of water and the capacity to closely mimic native structures, such as the extracellular matrix, facilitating various cellular processes like proliferation and differentiation. The polymers used in hydrogel formulations exhibit a broad spectrum of properties, allowing them to be classified into two main categories: natural polymers like collagen and chitosan, and synthetic polymers such as polyurethane and polyethylene glycol. This review offers a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of the key polymers that can constitute hydrogels, beginning with a brief contextualization of the polymers. It delves into their function, origin, and chemical structure, highlighting key sources of extraction and obtaining. Additionally, this review encompasses the main intrinsic properties of these polymers and their roles in the wound healing process, accompanied, whenever available, by explanations of the underlying mechanisms of action. It also addresses limitations and describes some studies on the effectiveness of isolated polymers in promoting skin regeneration and wound healing. Subsequently, we briefly discuss some application strategies of hydrogels derived from their intrinsic potential to promote the wound healing process. This can be achieved due to their role in the stimulation of angiogenesis, for example, or through the incorporation of substances like growth factors or drugs, such as antimicrobials, imparting new properties to the hydrogels. In addition to substance incorporation, the potential of hydrogels is also related to their ability to serve as a three-dimensional matrix for cell culture, whether it involves loading cells into the hydrogel or recruiting cells to the wound site, where they proliferate on the scaffold to form new tissue. The latter strategy presupposes the incorporation of biosensors into the hydrogel for real-time monitoring of wound conditions, such as temperature and pH. Future prospects are then ultimately addressed. As far as we are aware, this manuscript represents the first comprehensive approach that brings together and critically analyzes fundamental aspects of both natural and synthetic polymers constituting hydrogels in the context of cutaneous wound healing. It will serve as a foundational point for future studies, aiming to contribute to the development of an effective and environmentally friendly dressing for wounds.

Enhancing Efficiency in Inverted Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes through Arginine-Modified ZnO Nanoparticle Electron Injection Layer

Many quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) utilize ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) as an electron injection layer (EIL). However, the use of the ZnO NP EIL material often results in a charge imbalance within the quantum dot (QD) emitting layer (EML) and exciton quenching at the interface of the QD EML and ZnO NP EIL. To overcome these challenges, we introduced an arginine (Arg) interlayer (IL) onto the ZnO NP EIL. The Arg IL elevated the work function of ZnO NPs, thereby suppressing electron injection into the QD, leading to an improved charge balance within the QDs. Additionally, the inherent insulating nature of the Arg IL prevented direct contact between QDs and ZnO NPs, reducing exciton quenching and consequently improving device efficiency. An inverted QLED (IQLED) utilizing a 20 nm-thick Arg IL on the ZnO NP EIL exhibited a 2.22-fold increase in current efficiency and a 2.28-fold increase in external quantum efficiency (EQE) compared to an IQLED without an IL. Likewise, the IQLED with a 20 nm-thick Arg IL on the ZnO NP EIL demonstrated a 1.34-fold improvement in current efficiency and a 1.36-fold increase in EQE compared to the IQLED with a 5 nm-thick polyethylenimine IL on ZnO NPs.

All-Solution Processed Single-Layer WOLEDs Using [Pt(salicylidenes)] as Guests in a PFO Matrix

Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of two Pt(II) coordination compounds, the new platinum(II)[N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-3,4-diaminobenzophenone)] ([Pt(sal-3,4-ben)]) and the already well-known platinum(II)[N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-o-phenylenediamine] ([Pt(salophen)]), along with their application as guests in a poly [9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) conjugated polymer in all-solution processed single-layer white organic light-emitting diodes. Completely different performances were achieved: 2.2% and 15.3% of external quantum efficiencies; 2.8 cd A⁻¹ and 12.1 cd A⁻¹ of current efficiencies; and 3103 cd m⁻² and 6224 cd m⁻² of luminance for the [Pt(salophen)] and [Pt(sal-3,4-ben)] complexes, respectively. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE 1931) chromaticity color coordinates are (0.33, 0.33) for both 0.1% mol/mol Pt(II):PFO composites at between approximately 3.2 and 8 V. The optoelectronic properties of doped and neat PFO films have been investigated, using steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence. Theoretical calculations at the level of relativistic density functional theory explained these results, based on the presence of the Pt(II) central ion’s phosphorescence emission, considering spin-orbit coupling relationships. The overall results are explained, taking into account the active layer morphological properties, along with the device’s electric balance and the emitter’s efficiencies, according to deep-trap space-charge models. Considering the very simple structure of the device and the ease of synthesis of such compounds, the developed framework can offer a good trade-off for solution-deposited white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), with further applications in the field of lighting and signage.

Human Skin-Inspired Electrospun Patterned Robust Strain-Insensitive Pressure Sensors and Wearable Flexible Light-Emitting Diodes

Wearable skin-inspired electronic skins present remarkable outgrowth in recent years because their promising comfort device integration, lightweight, and mechanically robust durable characteristics led to significant progresses in wearable sensors and optoelectronics. Wearable electronic devices demand real-time applicability and factors such as complex fabrication steps, manufacturing cost, and reliable and durable performances, severely limiting the utilization. Herein, we nominate a scalable solution-processable electrospun patterned candidate capable of forming ultralong mechanically robust nano-microdimensional fibers with higher uniformity. Nanofibrous patterned substrates present surface energy and silver nanoparticle crystallization shifts, contributing to strain-sensitive and -insensitive conductive electrodes (10 000 cycles of 50% strain). Synergistic robust stress releasing and durable electromechanical behavior engenders stretchable durable health sensors, strain-insensitive pressure sensors (sensitivity of ∼83 kPa^-1 and 5000 durable cycles), robust alternating current electroluminescent displays, and flexible organic light-emitting diodes (20% improved luminescence and 300 flex endurance of 2 mm bend radius).

Recent Progress in Conducting Polymer Composite/Nanofiber-Based Strain and Pressure Sensors

The Conducting of polymers belongs to the class of polymers exhibiting excellence in electrical performances because of their intrinsic delocalized π- electrons and their tunability ranges from semi-conductive to metallic conductive regime. Conducting polymers and their composites serve greater functionality in the application of strain and pressure sensors, especially in yielding a better figure of merits, such as improved sensitivity, sensing range, durability, and mechanical robustness. The electrospinning process allows the formation of micro to nano-dimensional fibers with solution-processing attributes and offers an exciting aspect ratio by forming ultra-long fibrous structures. This review comprehensively covers the fundamentals of conducting polymers, sensor fabrication, working modes, and recent trends in achieving the sensitivity, wide-sensing range, reduced hysteresis, and durability of thin film, porous, and nanofibrous sensors. Furthermore, nanofiber and textile-based sensory device importance and its growth towards futuristic wearable electronics in a technological era was systematically reviewed to overcome the existing challenges.

Simulating the Performance of a Formamidinium Based Mixed Cation Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cell

With the aim of decreasing the number of experiments to obtain a perovskite solar cell (PSC) with maximum theoretical efficiency, in this paper, PSC performance was studied using the program solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS-1D). The PSC with the architecture ITO/TiO₂/perovskite/spiro-MeOTAD/Au was investigated, while the selected perovskite was mixed cation Rb_0.05Cs_0.1FA_0.85PbI₃. The analysis was based on an experimentally prepared solar cell with a power conversion efficiency of ~7%. The PSC performance, verified by short-circuit current density (J_sc), open-circuit voltage (V_oc), fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE), was studied by optimization of the simulation parameters responsible for improvement of the cell operation. The optimized parameters were absorber layer thickness, doping, defect concentration and the influence of the resistivity (the net effect of ohmic loss, R_s and the leakage current loss represented by the resistivity, R_shunt). The results of SCAPS-1D simulations estimated the theoretical power conversion efficiency of 15% for our material. We have showed that the main contribution to improvement of solar cell efficiency comes with lowering ohmic resistivity of the cell as well as doping and defect concentration, because their concentration is proportional to recombination rate.

Formamidinium Lead Iodide Perovskite Films with Polyvinylpyrrolidone Additive for Active Layer in Perovskite Solar Cells, Enhanced Stability and Electrical Conductivity

In this paper, we studied the influence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilization additive on optical and electrical properties of perovskite formamidinium lead iodide (FAPI) polycrystalline thin films on ZnO nanorods (ZNR). FAPI (as an active layer) was deposited from a single solution on ZNR (low temperature processed electron transport layer) using a one-step method with the inclusion of an anti-solvent. The role of PVP in the formation of the active layer was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements to observe the effect on morphology, while X-ray diffraction was used as a method to study the stability of the film in an ambient environment. The effect of the PVP additive on the optical and electrical properties of the perovskite thin films was studied via photoluminescence, UV-Vis measurements, and electrical impedance spectroscopy. We have demonstrated that PVP inclusion in solution-processed perovskite FAPI thin films prevents the degradation of the film in an ambient atmosphere after aging for 2 months. The inclusion of the PVP also improves the infiltration of FAPI perovskite into ZnO nanostructures, increases electrical conductivity and radiative recombination of the photo-generated charge carriers. These results show promising information for promoting PVP stabilized FAPI perovskites for the new generation of photovoltaic devices.

Two-dimensional halide perovskites: synthesis, optoelectronic properties, stability, and applications

Halide perovskites are promising materials for light-emitting and light-harvesting applications. In this context, two-dimensional perovskites such as nanoplatelets or Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson layered structures are important because of their structural flexibility, electronic confinement, and better stability. This review article brings forth an extensive overview of the recent developments of two-dimensional halide perovskites both in the colloidal and non-colloidal forms. We outline the strategy to synthesize and control the shape and discuss different crystalline phases and optoelectronic properties. We review the applications of two-dimensional perovskites in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, photodetectors, and photocatalysis. Besides, we also emphasize the moisture, thermal, and photostability of these materials in comparison to their three-dimensional analogs.

Case Studies on Structure-Property Relations in Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes via Interfacial Engineering with Self-Assembled Monolayers

Metal halide perovskites promise bright and narrow-band light-emitting diodes (LEDs). To this end, reliable understanding on structure-property relations is necessary, yet singling out one effect from others is difficult because photophysical and electronic functions of perovskite LEDs are interwoven each other. To resolve this problem, we herein employ self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for interfacial engineering nanomaterials. Four different molecules that have the same anchor (thiol), different backbone (aryl vs alkyl) and different terminal group (amine vs pyridine vs methyl) are used to form SAMs at the interface with the thin film of a green-color perovskite, CH₃NH₃PbBr₃. SAM-engineered perovskite films are characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), depth-profile X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), time-resolved laser spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopies. This permits access to how the chemical structure of molecule comprising SAM is related to the various chemical and physical features such as quality and grain size, cross-sectional atomic composition (Pb(0) vs Pb(II)), charge carrier lifetime, and charge mobility of perovskite films, leading to inferences of structure-property relations in the perovskite. Finally, we demonstrate that the trends observed in the model system stem from the affinity of SAM over the undercoordinated Pb ions of perovskite, and these are translated into considerably enhanced EQE (from 2.20 to 5.74%) and narrow-band performances (from 21.3 to 15.9 nm), without a noticeable wavelength shift in perovskite LEDs. Our work suggests that SAM-based interfacial engineering holds a promise for deciphering mechanisms of perovskite LEDs.
