Abstract
Rate coefficients for the gas-phase reactions of OH radicals with CH3C(O)CHClC(O)OCH3 (k1) and CH3C(O)CHClC(O)OCH2CH3 (k2) were measured using the relative technique with different reference compounds. The experiments were performed at (298 ± 2) K and 750 Torr of nitrogen or synthetic air by in situ FTIR spectroscopy and GC-FID chromatography. The following rate coefficients (in units of cm3molecule-1 s-1) were obtained: k1FTIR= (2.70 ± 0.51) × 10-11; k1GC-FID= (2.30 ± 0.71) × 10-11 and k2FTIR= (3.37 ± 0.62) × 10-11; k2GC-FID= (3.26 ± 0.85) × 10-11. This work reports the first kinetic study for the reactions of OH radicals with the mentioned chloroacetoacetates. Additionally, product studies are reported in similar conditions of the kinetic experiments. Acetic acid, acetaldehyde, formyl chloride, and methyl 2-chloro-2-oxoacetate were positively identified and quantified as degradation products. According to the identified products, atmospheric chemical mechanisms were proposed. The environmental implications of these reactions were assessed by the tropospheric lifetimes calculations of the title chloroesters. Significant average ozone production of 4.16 ppm for CH3C(O)CHClC(O)OCH3 and 5.98 ppm for CH3C(O)CHClC(O)OCH2CH3, respectively were calculated.

Abstract
The transport and formation of fluorinated compounds are greatly significant due to their possible environmental risks. In this work, the ˙OH-mediated degradation of CF3CF2CF2CH2OH and CF3CHFCF2CH2OH in the presence of O2/NO/NO2 was studied by using density functional theory and the direct kinetic method. The formation mechanisms of perfluorocarboxylic/hydroperfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs/H-PFCAs), which were produced from the reactions of α-hydroxyperoxy radicals with NO/NO2 and the ensuing oxidation of α-hydroxyalkoxy radicals, were clarified and discussed. The roles of water and silica particles in the rate constants and ˙OH reaction mechanism with fluoroalcohols were investigated theoretically. The results showed that water and silica particles do not alter the reaction mechanism but obviously change the kinetic properties. Water could retard fluoroalcohol degradation by decreasing the rate constants by 3-5 orders of magnitude. However, the heterogeneous ˙OH-rate coefficients on the silica particle surfaces, including H4SiO4, H6Si2O7, and H12Si6O18, are larger than that of the naked reaction by 1.20-24.50 times. This finding suggested that these heterogeneous reactions may be responsible for the atmospheric loss of fluoroalcohols and the burden of PFCAs. In addition, fluoroalcohols could be exothermically trapped by H12Si6O18, H6Si2O7, and H4SiO4, in which the chemisorption on H12Si6O18 is stronger than that on H6Si2O7 or H4SiO4. The global warming potentials and radiative forcing of CF3CF2CF2CH2OH/CF3CHFCF2CH2OH were calculated to assess their contributions to the greenhouse effect. The toxicities of individual species were also estimated via the ECOSAR program and experimental measurements. This work enhances the understanding of the environmental formation of PFCAs and the transformation of fluoroalcohols.

Abstract
Organic compounds could be taken up by plants via different pathways, depending on chemical properties and biological species, which is important for the risk assessment and risk control. To investigate the transport pathways of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) by wheat (Triticum acstivnm L.), the uptake of five perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs): TFA (C2), PFPrA (C3), PFBA (C4), PFHxA (C6), PFOA (C8), and a perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acid: PFOS (C8)) were studied using hydroponic experiments. Various inhibitors including a metabolic inhibitor (Na3VO4), two anion channel blockers (9-AC, DIDS), and two aquaporin inhibitors (AgNO3, glycerol) were examined. The wheat root and shoot showed different concentration trends with the carbon chain length of PFAAs. The uptake of TFA was inhibited by Na3VO4 and 9-AC whereas PFPrA was inhibited by Na3VO4, AgNO3 and 9-AC. For the other four PFAAs, only Na3VO4 was effective. These results together with the result of concentration-dependent uptake, which followed the Michaelis-Menten model, indicate that the uptake of PFAAs by wheat is mainly an energy-dependent active process mediated by carriers. For the ultra-short chain PFCAs (C2 and C3), aquaporins and anion channels may also be involved. A competition between TFA and PFPrA was determined during the plant uptake but no competition was observed between these two shorter chain analogues with other analogues, neither between PFBA and PFHxA, PFBA and PFBS, PFOA and PFOS.

Abstract
The atmospheric reaction of methyldichloroacetate (MDCA) with OH radical is studied using electronic structure calculations. Five different pathways were considered for the initial reactions, which results in the formation of alkyl radical of MDCA along with H2O, HOCl, and CH3O•. Among the five pathways studied, the α-carbon atom (-CHCl2 site) H atom abstraction reaction, which leads to the formation of the alkyl radical intermediate •CCl2C(O)OCH3 (I1) is found to be more favorable with an energy barrier of 7.3 kcal/mol, and Cl-atom abstraction reaction is having high energy barrier of 21.3 kcal/mol at M06-2X/6-311++G(2df,2p) level. The calculated thermochemical parameters show that except Cl-atom abstraction channel the other initial reaction channels are highly exothermic. The rate constant is calculated for the initial H atom abstraction reactions using canonical variational transition state theory over the temperature range of 278 to 350 K. The Arrhenius plot shows positive temperature dependence for both the reactions. The results from the calculated thermochemical parameters and rate constants show that the formation of the alkyl radical intermediate (I1) is more favorable with the rate constant of 2.07 × 10-13 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 298 K. The calculated atmospheric lifetime of MDCA is 28 days at normal atmospheric OH concentration. The results obtained from secondary reactions show that the major product formed from the oxidation chemistry of MDCA is methyl-2-chloro-2-oxoacetate (or) methyl oxalyl chloride.

Abstract
In this study, the mechanistic and kinetic analysis for reactions of CF3OCH(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H with OH radicals and Cl atoms have been performed at the CCSD(T)//B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Kinetic isotope effects for reactions CF3OCH(CF3)2/CF3OCD(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2H/CF3OCF2CF2D with OH and Cl were estimated so as to provide the theoretical estimation for future laboratory investigation. All rate constants, computed by canonical variational transition state theory (CVT) with the small-curvature tunneling correction (SCT), are in reasonable agreement with the limited experimental data. Standard enthalpies of formation for the species were also calculated. Atmospheric lifetime and global warming potentials (GWPs) of the reaction species were estimated, the large lifetimes and GWPs show that the environmental impact of them cannot be ignored. The organic nitrates can be produced by the further oxidation of CF3OC(•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2• in the presence of O2 and NO. The subsequent decomposition pathways of CF3OC(O•)(CF3)2 and CF3OCF2CF2O• radicals were studied in detail. The derived Arrhenius expressions for the rate coefficients over 230–350 K are: kT(1) = 5.00 × 10−24T3.57 exp(−849.73/T), kT(2) = 1.79 × 10−24T4.84 exp(−4262.65/T), kT(3) = 1.94 × 10−24T4.18 exp(−884.26/T), and kT(4) = 9.44 × 10−28T5.25 exp(−913.45/T) cm3 molecule−1 s−1.

Abstract
Decomposition of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) is of great significance due to their global distribution, persistence and toxicity to organisms. In this study, the photodegradation of a series of PFCAs (∼C2C12) in water by a medium-pressure mercury lamp was experimentally and theoretically examined. We found that photolysis of PFCAs all follow pseudo-first-order kinetics with the rate constant (kapp) increasing with carbon chain lengths, except for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) which cannot be degraded by the polychromatic irradiation. Product analysis showed that the PFCAs were mainly decomposed into shorter carbon chain length PFCAs in a stepwise manner, with the accumulation of TFA and fluoride ions as the end products. Moreover, a small amount of perfluoroolefins (CnF2n) was determined as gas-phase products. Wiberg bond order calculations confirmed the cleavage of the CC bond between carboxylic carbon and the adjacent carbon as the first reaction step, and density functional theory-based calculations revealed that kapp value is correlated with some molecular structural parameters. In the case of mixture irradiation, the evolution profiles of individual PFCAs were different from that in single-component systems, due to the dynamic balance between production and degradation. This work reveals the main molecular descriptors controlling the degradation rate of different PFCAs species, and improves the general understanding on the photodegradation mechanisms, which will provide useful information for future researches.

Perfluorinated surfactants and repellents are synthetic substances that have found numerous industrial and customer applications. Due to their persistence, at least two groups of these substances-perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSAs)-are diffused widely in the environment. It is hypothesized that the Tibetan Plateau, is one of few unique places on the Earth, due to its topography, specifically the vast space and high elevation above sea level, geographic location, climate, high solar radiation, lack of industry, little urbanization and general lack of significant direct sources of pollution. There it is believed possible to gain an insight into atmospheric fate (possible photochemical degradation of higher molecular mass and formation of lower molecular mass PFCAs and PFSAs) of PFASs under un-disturbed environmental conditions. Ultratrace analytical method for PFCAs and PFSAs and use of transportation and field blanks, laboratory blanks and isotopically labelled surrogates for recovery control has allowed the determination of nine perfluorinated carboxylic acids and six perfluorinated sulfonic acids at ultra-trace levels in water based samples from the alpine dimension regions of the Tibetan Plateau, the eastern slope of Minya Konka peak at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and also from the city of Chengdu from the lowland of the Sichuan Province in China. The specific compositional pattern of PFCAs and PFSAs and low levels of pollution with those compounds were observed in the central region of the Tibetan Plateau and in the region adjacent to the peaks of Minya Konka in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau. The fingerprint of the compositional pattern of PFCAs and PFSAs in water samples in the central region of the Tibetan Plateau and in the alpine region adjacent to the peaks of Minya Konka in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau may be explained by the result of photochemical degradation with dealkylation of longer chain compounds and formation of shorter chain compounds, which are more resistant to photochemical degradation.

Abstract
Theoretical investigations were carried out on the gas-phase reactions of CF3C(O)OCH2CH3, ethyl trifluoroacetate (ETFA) with Cl atoms by means of modern density functional theory methods. The optimized geometries, frequencies and minimum energy path were obtained with the hybrid density functional model MPWB1K using the 6-31+G(d,p) basis set. The single point energy calculations were refined further using the G2(MP2) method. Two conformers relatively close in energy were identified for ETFA; both are likely to be important in the temperature range of our study. The existence of transition states on the corresponding potential energy surface was ascertained by performing intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations. The rate constant at 298 K calculated theoretically using canonical transition state theory was found to be in good agreement with experimentally measured values. Our calculations suggest that H abstraction from the -CH2 group is kinetically and thermodynamically more favorable than abstraction from the -CH3 group. The atmospheric lifetime of ETFA with Cl atoms was determined to be 1.98 years. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first determination of the rate coefficients for the gas-phase reaction of chlorine atoms in ETFA.

Abstract
A theoretical study on the mechanism of the thermal decomposition of CF(3)C(O)OCH(2)O radical is presented for the first time. Geometry optimization and frequency calculations were performed at the MPWB1K/6-31 + G(d, p) level of theory and energetic information further refined by calculating the energy of the species using G2(MP2) theory. Three plausible decomposition pathways including α-ester rearrangement, reaction with O(2) and thermal decomposition (C-O bond scission) were considered in detail. Our results reveal that reaction with O(2) is the dominant path for the decomposition of CF(3)C(O)OCH(2)O radical in the atmosphere, involving the lowest energy barrier, which is in accord with experimental findings. Our theoretical results also suggest that α-ester rearrangement leading to the formation of trifluoroacetic acid TFA makes a negligible contribution to decomposition of the title alkoxy radical. The thermal rate constants for the above decomposition pathways were evaluated using canonical transition state theory (CTST) at 298 K.

Abstract
Detailed theoretical investigation has been performed on the mechanism, kinetics and thermochemistry of the gas phase reactions of CF3CH2OCH3 (HFE-263fb2) with OH radicals using ab-initio and DFT methods. Reaction profiles are modeled including the formation of pre-reactive and post-reactive complexes at entrance and exit channels, respectively. Our calculations reveal that hydrogen abstraction from the CH2 group is thermodynamically and kinetically more facile than that from the CH3 group. Using group-balanced isodesmic reactions, the standard enthalpies of formation for CF3CH2OCH3 and radicals (CF3CHOCH3 and CF3CH2OCH2) are also reported for the first time. The calculated bond dissociation energies for the CH bonds are in good agreement with experimental results. At 298K, the calculated total rate coefficient for CF3CH2OCH3+OH reactions is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The atmospheric fate of the alkoxy radicals, CF3CH(O)OCH3 and CF3CH2OCH2O are also investigated for the first time using the same level of theory. Out of three plausible decomposition channels, our results clearly point out that reaction with O2 is not the dominant path leading to the formation of CF3C(O)OCH3 for the decomposition of CF3CH(O)OCH3 radical in the atmosphere. This is in accord with the recent report of Osterstrom et al. [CPL 524 (2012) 32] but found to be in contradiction with experimental finding of Oyaro et al. [JPCA 109 (2005) 337].

Abstract
A field study on the photolysis of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was conducted at high altitudes in Mt. Mauna Kea (Hawaii, USA; 4200 m) and Mt. Tateyama (Toyama, Japan; 2500 m). Results of photolysis of PFASs in the field were further confirmed in laboratory studies. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), which is perceived as a non-degradable chemical in the environment, can undergo photolysis. Long chain PFASs can be successively dealkylated to short chain compounds such as perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), but the short chain compounds were relatively more resistant to photodegradation. These results suggest that environmental levels of short chain PFASs would increase both due to their formation from photolysis of long chain PFASs and from direct releases. Earlier studies on photolysis of PFASs were focused on the formation of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs) from precursor compounds (such as fluorotelomer alcohols) under laboratory conditions. Our study suggests that PFSAs and PFCAs themselves can undergo photodegradation in the environment.

Abstract
The indistinct origins of some ubiquitous perfluorinated alkyl acids have attracted great attention in recent decades. In this present work, even-chained polyfluorinated iodides (PFIs), a group of volatile perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), including four perfluorinated iodine alkanes (FIAs) and three polyfluorinated telomer iodides (FTIs) were confirmed to be present in the environment. A wide concentration range was found for FIAs at 1.41 to 3.08x10(4) pg/L, and for FTIs at 1.39 to 1.32x10(3) pg/L in the ambient air collected around a fluorochemical manufacturing plant in Shandong province, northern China. Whereas for surface soils, most of these PFIs were below detection limits and only small amounts of analytes with higher carbon chain (such as perfluorododecyl iodide and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl iodide, 16.6-499 pg/g) could be sporadically detected. The presence of the PFIs in different environmental matrices in the investigated area and calculated vapor pressures (0.095-20.4 Torr) verify that they can be considered as volatile organic chemicals and easily be released into the atmosphere. Together with reported degradation ability and long-range transport potential, the identification of these PFIs indicates that unintentional release during the telomer reaction process might also be another route for the formation and distribution of certain polyfluorinated alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acid derivatives under oxidative conditions in the environment.
