Abstract
Herein, we report an efficient and sustainable approach for the selective synthesis of ketones by palladium pincer catalyzed β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with aromatic primary alcohols via the borrowing hydrogen (BH) approach for the first time. A set of new Pd(II) ONO pincer complexes was synthesized and characterised by elemental analysis and spectral techniques (FT-IR, NMR and HRMS). The solid-state molecular structure of one the complexes was corroborated by X-ray crystallography. A range of α-alkylated ketone derivatives (25 examples) was obtained in excellent yields up to 95% through sequential dehydrogenative coupling of secondary and primary alcohols with 0.5 mol% catalyst loading with a substoichiometric amount of the base. Control experiment studies were carried out for the coupling reactions which revealed that the reaction involves an aldehyde, a ketone and chalcone intermediates, and eventually established the borrowing hydrogen strategy. Gratifyingly, this protocol is simple and atom economical, with water/hydrogen as byproducts. In addition, large-scale synthesis also demonstrated the synthetic usefulness of the present protocol.

Abstract
Salicylaldehyde hydrazones are weaker copper extractants than their oxime derivatives, which are used in hydrometallurgical processes to recover ~20 % of the world’s copper. Their strength, based on the extraction equilibrium constant Ke, can be increased by nearly three orders of magnitude by incorporating electron-withdrawing or hydrogen-bond acceptor groups (X) ortho to the phenolic OH group of the salicylaldehyde unit. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the effects of the 3-X substituents arise from a combination of their influence on the acidity of the phenol in the pH-dependent equilibrium, Cu2+ + 2Lorg ⇌ [Cu(L–H)2]org + 2H+, and on their ability to ‘buttress’ interligand hydrogen bonding by interacting with the hydrazone N–H donor group. X-ray crystal structure determination and computed structures indicate that in both the solid state and the gas phase, coordinated hydrazone groups are less planar than coordinated oximes and this has an adverse effect on intramolecular hydrogen-bond formation to the neighbouring phenolate oxygen atoms.

Abstract
Four symmetrical N-acylsubstituted dihydrazones containing bithiophene core were synthesized from condensation of 2,2'-bithiophene-5,5'-dicarboxyaldehyde with benzoic, isonicotinoyl, 2-thiophenic and 2-furoic hydrazide. The obtained compounds were characterized through the data from (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analysis, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements. Additionally, the electronic properties including orbital energies and resulting energy gaps were calculated by density functional theory (DFT). Their thermal behavior was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). They were thermal sable up to 320°C. The prepared N-acylsubstituted dihydrazones emitted light with λ(em) in the range of 499-530 nm in solution, whereas, in solid state as blend with PMMA blue emission was observed. They undergo quasi-reversible and irreversible electrochemical reduction and oxidation processes, respectively. Additionally, the selected compounds were tested preliminary as component of active layer in organic photovoltaic cells. The highest value of power conversion efficiency, equal to 1.68% under simulated 100 mW/cm(2) AM 1.5G irradiation was found for device with the architecture ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:PCBM:FBTH (1:2:2)/Al.

Abstract
In this work, a novel catalytic system is developed, consisting of palladium nanoclusters homogenously dispersed on the surface of nanostructured polymer nanofibers based on poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS). Indeed, PLLA nanofibers containing amino-functionalized silsesquioxane molecules (POSS-NH2), potentially capable of interacting with the metal precursor, are prepared by means of electrospinning. Conversely to the polymer matrix, which does not show any tendency to retain the metal precursor, the submicrometric dispersion of POSS-NH2 in the PLLA nanofibers, as demonstrated by SEM-EDS analysis, turns out to promote the formation of metal nanoclusters. TEM measurements show a uniform distribution of Pd nanoparticles, characterized by an average dimension of ca. 4 nm, along the fibers. The prepared system proves a relevant catalytic activity toward the hydrogenation of stilbene under heterogeneous conditions. Moreover, as demonstrated by XPS measurements, the support is capable of retaining the catalyst during the hydrogenation reaction, thus preventing its leaching.

Abstract
A new aroyl hydrazone, N-2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde-N'-4-nitrobenzoyl hydrazone (H2L) and its mixed ligand Cu(II) complex [CuLpy] [py, pyridine] have been prepared. The ligand is characterized by elemental analysis, electronic, infrared and NMR spectral studies and the complex by electronic, infrared, EPR spectral studies and the magnetic susceptibility data. The structures of the compounds were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Both the ligand and the Cu complex crystallize into a triclinic lattice with a space group of PI. From the crystal studies, it is concluded that the ligand molecule exits in the keto form in the solid state, while at the time of complexation, it tautomerises into the enol form. The complex is formed by the double deprotonation of the ligand molecule--both the phenolic and the enolic protons.

Abstract
A new aroyl hydrazone, N-2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone-N'-4-nitrobenzoyl hydrazine was prepared by the condensation reaction of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone and 4-nitrobenzoyl hydrazine. Characterization of the compound was done by elemental analysis and electronic, infrared and NMR spectral analyses. The complete structural assignment of the compound was done by NMR studies by using COSY homonuclear and HSQC heteronuclear techniques. The crystal and molecular structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies: crystallized in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n, Z=4, a=7.3343(9)A, b=20.3517(9)A, c=10.1375(5)A, alpha=90.00 degrees, beta=95.735(7) degrees and gamma=90.00 degrees. From the crystal structure, it is concluded that the compound exists as the keto isomer in the solid state. There is a completely extended conformation in the central part of the molecule C5C8N1N2C10O2 with an E configuration at the double bond of the hydrazinic bridge.

Abstract
New unsymmetrical [N2O2] tetradentate Schiff base complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and VO(II) were synthesized by template condensation of the tetradentate precursor 1-phenylbutane-1,3-dione mono-S-methylisothiosemicarbazone with o-hydroxybenzaldehyde or its 5-phenylazo derivative. They were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, electron spin resonance, and NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and magnetic measurements. The crystal structures of five of them have been determined by X-ray diffraction using, in some cases, synchrotron radiation. These compounds are characterized by a large thermal stability; their decomposition temperatures range from 240 up to 310 degrees C. Complexes with the phenylazo substituent were found to possess a large second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response, as determined both by measurements of solution-phase direct current electric-field-induced second harmonic generation and by theoretical time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The molecular hyperpolarizability was found to decrease in the order Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) approximately VO(II). The active role of the metal in determining the NLO properties of the complexes was shown through an analysis of their UV-vis spectra, which revealed the presence of metal-to-ligand (in closed-shell complexes) and ligand-to-metal (in open-shell complexes) charge-transfer bands together with intra-ligand charge-transfer transitions. Assignment of the bands was based on the analysis of the TDDFT computed spectra.

Abstract
The directed assembly of six different M(II) complexes (M = Cu, Co, and Ni) into infinite chains has been achieved by combining anionic chelating ligands (for controlling the coordination geometry) with bifunctional ligands containing a metal-coordinating pyridyl moiety and a self-complementary hydrogen-bonding moiety. Six crystal structures are presented, and in each case, the chelating acac ligand occupies the four equatorial coordination sites leaving room for the bifunctional ligand to coordinate in the axial positions. The supramolecular chemistry, which organizes the coordination complexes into the desired infinite 1-D chains, is driven by a combination of N-H...N and N-H...O hydrogen bonds.
