Magnetooptical and Structural Investigations of Five Dimeric Cobalt(II) Complexes Mimicking Metalloenzyme Active Sites

Synthesis, polymorphism, and shape complementarity-induced co-crystallization of hexanuclear Co(II) clusters capped by a flexible heteroligand shell

Polymorphism and co-crystallization have gradually gained attention as new tools in the development of modern crystalline functional materials. However, the study on the selective self-assembly of metal clusters into multicomponent crystals is still in its infancy. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of two new heteroleptic hydroxido-acetato and acetato Co(II) clusters [Co6(OH)2(OAc)4(pyret)6] (1) and [Co6(OAc)6(pyret)6] (2) incorporating auxiliary 2-pyrrolidinoethoxylate (pyret) ligands. On this occasion, we revealed that the commonly used thermal procedure for dehydration of cobalt(II) acetate leads to a reagent comprising substantial contamination by cobalt hydroxido moieties. Comprehensive structural analysis of new compounds demonstrated intriguing crystal structure diversity of hydroxido-acetato cluster 1, which represents a rare example of both conformational and packing polymorphism in one compound, originating from the flexibility of organic O,N-ligands in the secondary coordination sphere. Furthermore, both clusters exhibit an interesting propensity for the selective formation of co-crystals 1·2 driven mainly by van der Waals forces and specific shape complementarity between co-formers.

Spectroscopic and computational investigations of Cobalt(II) binding to the innate immune protein human calprotectin

Human calprotectin (CP) is an innate immune protein that participates in the metal-withholding response to infection by sequestering essential metal nutrients from invading microbial pathogens. CP is comprised of S100A8 (α subunit, 10.8 kDa) and S100A9 (β subunit, 13.2 kDa). Two transition-metal binding sites of CP form at the S100A8/S100A9 dimer interface. Site 1 is a His3Asp motif comprised of His83 and His87 from the S100A8 subunit and His20 and Asp30 from the S100A9 subunit. Site 2 is an unusual hexahistidine motif composed of S100A8 residues His17 and His27 and S100A9 residues His91, His95, His103, and His105. In the present study, the His3Asp and His6 sites of CP were further characterized by utilizing Co2+ as a spectroscopic probe. Magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy was employed in conjunction with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and density functional theory computations to characterize the Co2+-bound S100A8(C42S)/S100A9(C3S) CP-Ser variant and six site variants that allowed the His3Asp and His6 sites to be further probed. Our results provide new insight into the metal-binding sites of CP-Ser and the effect of amino acid substitutions on the structure of site 2.

Structural characterization and magnetic property studies of a mixed-valence {CoIIICo} complex with a μ4-oxo tetrahedral {Co} motif

We have synthesized and structurally characterized a new mixed valence pentanuclear Co complex, bearing a rare μ4-O-tetrahedral CoII4 unit, by employing a pyridine-like Schiff base ligand. We have performed DC magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements over polycrystalline samples and chemical quantum computations in order to understand the exchange interaction pattern within Co(ii) sites and ground state magnetic anisotropy. This new complex shows an overall antiferromagnetic exchange interaction whose strength strongly depends on the local symmetry of Co(ii) sites. Also, local ion magnetic anisotropy reveals a strongly axial behaviour with the lowest Kramers doublet (KD) at each Co(ii) ion sufficiently isolated from excited states at low temperatures. Two Co(ii) sites show tetrahedral symmetry and the spin only formalism including axial zero-field splitting (ZFS) term properly described them; on the other hand, the other two Co(ii) sites have distorted octahedral and square base pyramidal coordination spheres, and a strong orbital contribution leads to a failure of the spin only formalism. A model of four Seff = 1/2 exchange interacting sites is necessary in order to account for low temperature magnetization behaviour. In view of the strongly anisotropic KD states, the exchange interactions are forced to be modelled as anisotropic ones. Overall, experimental data and quantum chemical computations are in good agreement, supporting the proposed model for magnetic behaviour.

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties, and Catalytic Properties of a Nickel(II)-Dependent Biomimetic of Metallohydrolases

A dinickel(II) complex of the ligand 1,3-bis(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propan-2-ol (HL1) has been prepared and characterized to generate a functional model for nickel(II) phosphoesterase enzymes. The complex, [Ni2(L1)(μ-OAc)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·H2O, was characterized by microanalysis, X-ray crystallography, UV-visible, and IR absorption spectroscopy and solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements. Susceptibility studies show that the complex is antiferromagnetically coupled with the best fit parameters J = -27.4 cm-1, g = 2.29, D = 28.4 cm-1, comparable to corresponding values measured for the analogous dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L1)(μ-OAc)](ClO4)2·0.5 H2O (J = -14.9 cm-1 and g = 2.16). Catalytic measurements with the diNi(II) complex using the substrate bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) demonstrated activity toward hydrolysis of the phosphoester substrate with K m ~10 mM, and k cat ~0.025 s-1. The combination of structural and catalytic studies suggests that the likely mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack on the substrate by a terminal nucleophilic hydroxido moiety.

A magnetooptical study of (4-(2-dibutylaminoethanolato-N,O,O,O) chlorido copper(II)): a cubane complex with dominant ferromagnetic interactions

This paper reports the experimental and theoretical study of a tetranuclear (CuClOCH2CH2N(C4H9)2)4 complex. Analysis of the magnetic circular dichroism spectrum was performed based on the Hamiltonian that includes the crystal field of the nearest ligands and the spin-orbit interaction. The crystal field parameters were evaluated in the framework of the exchange charge model that accounts for the exchange and covalence effects. The values of the crystal field parameters obtained during the analysis of the magnetic circular dichroism spectrum were used for the calculation of the principal values and the directions of the principal axes of the local g-tensors and for the simulation of both temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and field dependence of the magnetization. The value of the exchange parameter (Jex = 30 cm(-1)) was obtained. It was demonstrated that the description of the low temperature magnetic properties requires taking into account the intercluster interaction.

Magnetic and structural properties of dinuclear singly bridged-phenoxido metal(ii) complexes

Five new dinuclear bridged-phenoxido dichlorido-metal(ii) complexes [M₂(μ-L^ClO)(X)₂Cl₂]PF₆/ClO₄ complexes, where M(ii) = Co, Ni, Cu (1–4) and Zn (5); X = CH₃OH, H₂O or 0 were synthesized and structurally characterized. Complexes 1–4 revealed weak to moderate antiferromagnetic coupling.
