91Zr Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of Solid Zirconium Halides at High Magnetic Field

Achieving 1 ppm field homogeneity above 24 T: Application of differential mapping for shimming Keck and the Series Connected Hybrid magnets at the NHMFL

Powered resistive and resistive-superconductive hybrid magnets can reach fields higher than superconducting NMR magnets but lack the field homogeneity and temporal stability needed for high resolution NMR. Due to field fluctuations in powered magnets, commercially available mapping systems fail to produce maps of these magnets with sufficient reproducibility, thus hampering attempts to improve homogeneity of the field they generate. Starting with a commercial mapper, we built a mapping system which uses a two-channel (measurement + reference) mapper probe. We used this system to map and then to shim two magnets of Florida Bitter type at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, FL. With a combination of passive (ferromagnetic) and active shims we achieved 2.3 ppm homogeneity in 1 cm diameter spherical volume (dsv) at 25.0 T in the Keck resistive magnet, and 0.9 ppm homogeneity in 1 cm dsv at 23.5, 28.2, and 35.2 T in the series-connected resistive-superconductive hybrid (SCH) magnet.

Exploring electrolyte organization in supercapacitor electrodes with solid-state NMR

Supercapacitors are electrochemical energy-storage devices that exploit the electrostatic interaction between high-surface-area nanoporous electrodes and electrolyte ions. Insight into the molecular mechanisms at work inside supercapacitor carbon electrodes is obtained with (13)C and (11)B ex situ magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR). In activated carbons soaked with an electrolyte solution, two distinct adsorption sites are detected by NMR, both undergoing chemical exchange with the free electrolyte molecules. On charging, anions are substituted by cations in the negative carbon electrode and cations by anions in the positive electrode, and their proportions in each electrode are quantified by NMR. Moreover, acetonitrile molecules are expelled from the adsorption sites at the negative electrode alone. Two nanoporous carbon materials were tested, with different nanotexture orders (using Raman and (13)C MAS-NMR spectroscopies), and the more disordered carbon shows a better capacitance and a better tolerance to high voltages.

77Se solid-state NMR investigations on As(x)Se(1-x) glasses using CPMG acquisition under MAS

(77)Se (I=1/2) solid-state NMR is a very sensitive probe of the local structure of selenide glasses, which themselves are promising for optical applications. In this work, we show that although (77)Se has a low natural abundance (7.58%) and a wide spectral range, the sensitivity can be dramatically increased using Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) trains of rotor-synchronized π pulses during the detection of (77)Se magnetization but may be affected by chemical shift anisotropy when the Magic Angle Spinning rate is not fast enough and by offset effects. The indirect dimension of the T(2)(CPMG)-resolved spectrum shows a strong influence of the J-couplings between naturally occurring (77)Se pairs. The resulting spectra show that the structural model known as "chains crossing model" is not entirely suitable to describe the glassy network of the Se-rich compositions.
