Sebaceous adenoma of oral cavity: report of case and comparative proliferation study with sebaceous gland hyperplasia and Fordyce's granules

Near-infrared radiation causes sebaceous gland enlargement along with an ROS-dependent augmentation of epidermal growth factor receptor expression in hamsters

As near-infrared radiation (NIR), which is a composition of sunlight with an 780-1400 nm wavelength, is associated with skin aging such as wrinkles and slacks, the biological actions of NIR with high dermal penetration remains unclear. In the present study, we found that NIR irradiation (40 J/cm2 ) at different levels of irradiance (95-190 mW/cm2 ) using a laboratory device with a xenon flash lamp (780-1700 nm) caused sebaceous gland enlargement concomitantly with skin thickening in the auricle skin of hamsters. The sebaceous gland enlargement resulted from the proliferation of sebocytes due to an increase in the number of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)- and lamin B1-positive cells in vivo. In addition, NIR irradiation transcriptionally augmented the production of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) accompanied with an increase in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in hamster sebocytes in vitro. Furthermore, the administration of hydrogen peroxide increased the level of EGFR mRNA in the sebocytes. Therefore, these results provide novel evidence that NIR irradiation causes the hyperplasia of sebaceous glands in hamsters by mechanisms in which EGFR production is transcriptionally augmented through ROS-dependent pathways in sebocytes.

Fibroepithelial Polyp with Sebaceous Hyperplasia: A Case Report

Fibro epithelial Polyp (FEP) is a polypoid outgrowth of epidermis and dermal fibro vascular tissue. This polyp is most commonly found in oral cavity, neck and axilla, though any skin fold may be affected like groin area. We describe a case of a 25-year-old male patient with a growth over the anterior rugae region of hard palate since 3 years. Based on histological appearance, diagnosis of sebaceous gland hyperplasia in fibroepithelial polyp was given which itself is a rare entity, and in our case, it was encountered at the rarest of sites.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the oral cavity: a case report and review of the literature

We report the clinical and pathologic features of an intraoral sebaceous carcinoma and review the literature. The intraoral buccal mucosal tumor from a 50-year-old man was a poorly differentiated carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation and expression of androgen receptor. Fordyce granules and a minor salivary gland with a duct were identified in vicinity to the tumor. We discuss the differential diagnosis and histogenesis. The patient underwent surgery and adjuvant radiation therapy.

Sebaceous adenoma of the submandibular gland: a case report

Sebaceous adenoma of the salivary gland is a rare tumor comprising 0.1% of all salivary gland neoplasms and less than 0.5% of salivary adenomas. Histologically, sebaceous adenomas are benign neoplasms consisting of sebaceous cells arranged in nests forming acinar and duct-like structures. Oncocytic metaplasia may also occur in some areas. We describe a case of sebaceous adenoma in the submandibular gland. Under a presumptive diagnosis of sialadenitis/sialolithiasis, the patient was administered multiple courses of antibiotics; however, these were not effective. Excisional biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of sebaceous adenoma. A 1-year follow-up showed no recurrence.

Comparative clinicopathological study of intraoral sebaceous hyperplasia and sebaceous adenoma

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to compare the clinicopathological features of oral sebaceous hyperplasia and sebaceous adenoma.

STUDY DESIGN

Clinical data, microscopical characteristics, and ki-67 immunoexpression were comparatively analyzed on 2 intraoral sebaceous adenomas, 6 intraoral sebaceous hyperplasias, and 21 normal intraoral sebaceous glands.

RESULTS

Clinically, sebaceous glands presented as multiple separated papules, sebaceous hyperplasias as a single enlarged papule, and sebaceous adenoma as a well-defined nodule. Microscopically, sebaceous adenoma presented an increased number of lobules, smaller lobules, and a greater number of germinative/squamous cells. Sebaceous hyperplasia also had an increased number of lobules and fewer number of germinative/squamous cells, as compared to normal oral sebaceous glands. Ki-67 expression was seen only in germinative cells and counts were higher in sebaceous adenomas followed by hyperplasias and normal glands.

CONCLUSIONS

Sebaceous hyperplasias and adenomas showed different clinical, microscopic, and proliferative characteristics, suggesting the usefulness of the studied criteria on diagnosis of these uncommon oral lesions.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the parotid gland in children: an immunohistochemical and ploidy study

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a rare malignancy, affecting mainly the periocular glands. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first English-language report of parotid SC affecting children; two cases are presented. Immunohistochemical studies included 29 different antibodies (15 of these were cytokeratins, CKs). For each case, DNA ploidy status was determined using isolated nuclei stained with Feulgen and analysed using a DNA image cytometry system. Most of the tumour cells were positive for CKs AE1/AE3, 34B12, 5 and 7. The CK14 pattern depicted the monolayer of basal cells surrounding the islands of malignant tissue, while the more central sebaceous differentiated cells were negative. Epithelial membrane antigen was strongly positive in the well differentiated cells, while most of the basaloid peripheral cells were negative, and only a few cells were positive for carcinoembryonic antigen. beta catenin, E cadherin and C-erb B2 were expressed by most of the cells including the more differentiated sebaceous cells. Tumour cells were negative for muscle or myoepithelial markers, androgen, oestrogen and progesterone receptors. Both SCs were uniformly diploid, and showed low proliferative indices for p53, Ki-67 and Mcm-2, which is consistent with the good clinical course presented by these patients so far.
