Lightness and perceptual transparency

To estimate intrinsic descriptors of objects in the environment, effective biological vision systems must 'discount' extrinsic image properties that arise from changes in viewing conditions. In particular, to estimate the reflectance of surfaces, human vision must discount, or 'take account of', likely differences in the illumination of surfaces between one image region and another. If human vision possesses any significant degree of lightness constancy, then we would expect a target perceived to be in low illumination to appear lighter than an identical target perceived to be in higher illumination. In this paper, I present lightness illusions that run directly counter to this expectation. I suggest that mid-level and higher-level factors such as image junction structure and perceived illumination and transparency, are ineffective for generating strong lightness illusions on their own, and that these factors are not 'stronger' than luminance contrast in determining lightness. I discuss the implications of these results for current models of lightness perception. I also suggest a statistical justification for the highest-luminance anchoring rule for lightness.

The absence of depth constancy in contour stereograms

Stereoscopic surfaces constructed from Kanizsa-type illusory contours or explicit luminance contours were tested for three-dimensional (3-D) shape constancy. The curvature of the contours and the apparent viewing distance between the surface and the observer were manipulated. Observers judged which of two surfaces appeared more curved. Experiment 1 allowed eye movements and revealed a bias in 3-D shape judgment with changes in apparent viewing distance, such that surfaces presented far from the observer appeared less curved than surfaces presented close to the observer. The lack of depth constancy was approximately the same for illusory-contour surfaces and for explicit-contour surfaces. Experiment 2 showed that depth constancy for explicit-contour surfaces improved slightly when fixation was required and eye movements were restricted. These experiments suggest that curvature in depth is misperceived, and that illusory-contour surfaces are particularly sensitive to this distortion.

Depth release of illusory contour shape in the Ehrenstein grid

In the Ehrenstein grid, bright illusory patches delineated by illusory contours are seen. In order to assess whether the illusory patches possess shape constancy, the Ehrenstein grid was viewed straight on and at various angles of slant with respect to the observer. Observers matched the apparent shape of the illusory patches with a circle or an ellipse defined by real lines in a reference stimulus. Results show that, when viewed at a slanted angle, the shape of the bright patches was deformed and became oval. Such deformation was much less when the illusory contours were replaced by real contours. We label this dissociation of shape perception from depth cues depth release to contrast it with the previously described phenomenon of depth capture in which depth cues displace the illusory patches in depth. As a common explanation for both effects, it is proposed that the illusory contours induced by line ends or line ends themselves provide only weak or ineffective depth signals.
