Optimization and modelling of magnesium oxide (MgO) photocatalytic degradation of binary dyes using response surface methodology

Textile industry dye effluent contains a mixture of different kinds of dyes. Many times, photocatalysis is targeted as a solution for the treatment of dye effluent from the textile industry. Many researches have been published related to the photocatalysis of single textile dyes but in the real-world scenario, effluent is a mixture of dyes. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is used as a photocatalyst to treat a mixture (binary solution) of Methylene blue (MB) and Methylene violet (MV) along with individual MB and MV dyes in this article. MgO shows remarkable photocatalytic activity at about 93 and 88% for MB and MV dye in binary solution within 135 min. Furthermore, to study the influence of process parameters, experiments are designed with the help of the central composite design (CCD), and Response surface methodology (RSM) is used to study the interactions between parameters. For this study, five parameters are selected i.e., Photocatalyst dosage, initial concentration of both dyes, time of exposure to the light source, and pH of the binary solution. The photocatalytic process is also optimized and finally optimization of process parameters is validated with an experiment. The result of the validation experiment is very close to the predicted photocatalytic activity.

A new tannin-based adsorbent synthesized for rapid and selective recovery of palladium and gold: Optimization using central composite design

A tannin-based adsorbent was synthesized by pomegranate peel tannin powder modified with ethylenediamine (PT-ED) for the rapid and selective recovery of palladium and gold. To characterize PT-ED, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-Mapping), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used. Central composite design (CCD) was used for optimization. The kinetic, isotherm, interference of coexisting metal ions, and thermodynamics were studied. The optimal conditions, including Au (III) concentration = 30 m g L - 1 , Pd (II) concentration = 30 m g L - 1 , adsorbent mass = 26 mg, pH = 2, and time = 26 min with the sorption percent more than 99 %, were anticipated for both metals using CCD. Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order expressed the isotherm and kinetic adsorption of the both metals. The inhomogeneity of the adsorbent surface and the multi-layer adsorption of gold and palladium ions on the PT-ED surface are depicted by the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic investigation showed that P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions adsorption via PT-ED was an endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible process. The maximum adsorption capacity of P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions on PT-ED was 261.189 m g g - 1 and 220.277 m g g - 1 , respectively. The probable adsorption mechanism of P d 2 + and A u 3 + ions can be ion exchange and chelation. PT-ED (26 mg) recovered gold and palladium rapidly from the co-existing metals in the printed circuit board (PCB) scrap, including Ca, Zn, Si, Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Ba, W, Co, Mn, and Mg with supreme selectivity toward gold and palladium. The results of this work suggest the use of PT-ED with high selectivity and efficiency to recover palladium and gold from secondary sources such as PCB scrap.

Highly efficient activation of periodate by a manganese-modified biochar to rapidly degrade methylene blue

In this study, the manganese oxide/biochar composites (Mn@BC) were synthesized from Phytolacca acinosa Roxb. The Mn@BC was analyzed via techniques of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The results show that MnOx is successfully loaded on the surface of BC, and the load of MnOx can increase the number of surface functional groups of BC. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows that MnOx loaded on BC mainly exists in three valence forms: Mn(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅲ), and Mn(Ⅳ). The ability of Mn@BC to activate periodate (PI) was studied by simulating the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The degradation experiment results showed that the MB removal rate by the Mn@BC/PI system reached 97.4% within 30 min. The quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis confirmed that Mn@BC can activate PI to produce iodate (IO3•), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (•OH), which can degrade MB during the reaction. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was used to determine the interaction between pH, Mn@BC and PI concentration in the Mn@BC/PI system, and the optimum technological parameters were determined. When pH = 5.4, Mn@BC concentration 0.56 mg/L, PI concentration 1.1 mmol/L, MB removal rate can reach 98.05%. The cyclic experiments show that Mn@BC can be reused. After four consecutive runs, the removal rate of MB by the Mn@BC/PI system is still 82%, and the Mn@BC/PI system also shows high performance in treating MB in actual water bodies and degrading other pollutants. This study provides a practical method for degrading dyes in natural sewage.

An experimental design study of photocatalytic activity of the Z-scheme silver iodide/tungstate binary nano photocatalyst

A binary AgI/ Ag2WO4 photocatalyst was fabricated and characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-Vis DRS, and FT-IR. It was then used to photodegrade sodium ceftriaxone (CTX) in an aqueous solution. The band gap energies of 2.95, 2.78, and 2.62 eV were obtained by the Kubelka-Munk model for Ag2WO4, AgI, and AgI/Ag2WO4 catalysts. The samples have pHPZC values of 6.9, 4.2, and 6.6, respectively. The synergistic photocatalytic activity of the coupled system depended on the AgI:Ag2WO4 mole ratio and grinding time (optimums:mole ratio of 4:1 and time 30 min). The experimental design was used for optimizing the conditions and a quadratic model well-processed the data based on the model F value of 131.87 > F0.05,14,13 = 2.55 and LOF F value of 0.78 < F0.05,10,3 = 8.78. The optimized RSM run included the irradiation time of 85 min, 3.5 mg/L of CTX sample at pH 9, and a catalyst dose of 1.0 g/L. Under the optimized conditions, about 63% of CTX molecules were photodegraded. In the study of the scavenging agents, the direct Z-scheme mechanism accumulated electrons in the CB-AgI and the holes in the VB-Ag2WO4 level, as stronger reducing and oxidizing centers than the accumulated electrons and holes of the type (II) heterojunction mechanism. Compared to a CTX oxidation potential of about 0.06 V, the direct Z-scheme mechanism is more favorable to reduce or oxidize it.

Insight into the Effect of Sulfonation Techniques on the Adsorption Properties of -SO3H Surface-Functionalized Coal as Adsorbent for Malachite Green Dye: Steric and Energetic Investigation

Natural coal (N.C) was sulfonated with sulfuric acid by normal stirring (MS.C) and sonication waves (SS.C) to obtain -SO₃H functionalized coal as enhanced adsorbents of malachite green dye (MG). The sulfonated products exhibit enhanced surface area (MS.C (27.2 m²/g) and SS.C (45.8 m²/g)) as compared to N.C. SS.C achieved higher acid density (14.2 mmol/g) and sulfur content (13.2 wt. %) as compared to MS.C. The impact of the sulfonation processes on the adsorption of MG was assessed based on the monolayer isotherm model of one energy. The MG Q _sat of N.C (121.3 mg/g), MS.C (226.3 mg/g), and SS.C (296.4 mg/g) validate the significant effect of the sulfonation processes by the sonication waves. This is in agreement with the active site densities that reflect the saturation of SS.C by more active sites (180.74 mg/g) than MS.C (120.38 mg/g) and N.C (70.84 mg/g). The MS.C and SS.C can adsorb three MG molecules as compared to two molecules per site of N.C. The Gaussian energy (<8 kJ/mol) and adsorption energy (<40 kJ/mol)) reflects the physisorption of MG involving van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and dipole bonding forces. The thermodynamic functions demonstrate the uptake of MG by exothermic, spontaneous, feasible reactions.

Biowaste-Derived, Highly Efficient, Reusable Carbon Nanospheres for Speedy Removal of Organic Dyes from Aqueous Solutions

The current work explores the adsorptive efficiency of carbon nanospheres (CNSs) derived from oil palm leaves (OPL) that are a source of biowaste. CNSs were synthesized at 400, 600, 800 and 1000 °C, and those obtained at 1000 °C demonstrated maximum removal efficiency of ~91% for malachite green (MG). Physicochemical and microscopic characteristics were analysed by FESEM, TEM, FTIR, Raman, TGA and XPS studies. The presence of surface oxygen sites and the porosity of CNSs synergistically influenced the speed of removal of MG, brilliant green (BG) and Congo red (CR) dyes. With a minimal adsorbent dosage (1 mg) and minimum contact time (10 min), and under different pH conditions, adsorption was efficient and cost-effective (nearly 99, 91 and 88% for BG, MG and CR, respectively). The maximum adsorption capacities of OPL-based CNSs for BG were 500 and 104.16 mg/g for MG and 25.77 mg/g for CR. Adsorption isotherms (Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin) and kinetics models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Elovich) for the adsorption processes of all three dyes on the CNSs were explored in detail. BG and CR adsorption the Freundlich isotherm best, while MG showed a best fit to the Temkin model. Adsorption kinetics of all three dyes followed a pseudo-second-order model. A reusability study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of CNSs in removing the MG dye and showed ~92% efficiency even after several cycles. Highly efficient CNSs with surface oxygen groups and speedy removal of organic dyes within 10 min by CNSs are highlighted in this paper.

Adsorption of Safranin-O dye by copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized from Punica granatum leaf extract

The development of new technologies for water and wastewater treatment is a growing need due to the occurrence of micropollutants, such as dyes, in water resources. In this sense, green-synthesized nanoparticles are being extensively studied, due to their low cost, non-toxicity, and high efficiency in adsorption processes. Thus, the present study reports the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP), obtained from pomegranate (Punica granatum) leaf extract, employed for the removal of Safranin-O (SO) dye. CuO-NP was characterized by physicochemical analysis. These analyzes suggested that the redox process occurred efficiently. Also, the material presented interesting elements for the removal of cationic dyes such as negative surface charge, high specific surface area, and predominance of mesopores. The kinetic data fitted the pseudo-second-order model, reaching equilibrium in 480 min. The equilibrium study resulted in a maximum adsorption capacity of 189.54 mg g^-1 at 298 K and the experimental data best fitted the Langmuir model. The effect of pH and ionic strength did not present significant changes, which demonstrates an advantage of this adsorbent over other materials. The regeneration study allowed to verify the possibility of reuse CuO-NP, since after 4 cycles the adsorption capacity was 44% of the initial value. Considering the results found, CuO-NP has a high potential for applicability in the treatment of water contaminated by dyes.

Novel Magnetic Nanocomposites Based on Carboxyl-Functionalized SBA-15 Silica for Effective Dye Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

In this study, three novel magnetic nanocomposites based on carboxyl-functionalized SBA-15 silica and magnetite nanoparticles were prepared through an effective and simple procedure and applied for methylene blue (MB) and malachite green G (MG) adsorption from single and binary solutions. Structure, composition, morphology, magnetic, and textural properties of the composites were thoroughly investigated. The influence of the amount of carboxyl functional groups on the physicochemical and adsorptive properties of the final materials was investigated. The capacity of the synthesized composites to adsorb MB and MG from single and binary solutions and the factors affecting the adsorption process, such as contact time, solution pH, and dye concentration, were assessed. Kinetic modelling showed that the dye adsorption mechanism followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that adsorption was a chemically controlled multilayer process. The adsorption rate was simultaneously controlled by external film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. It was evidenced that the molecular geometry of the dye molecule plays a major role in the adsorption process, with the planar geometry of the MB molecule favoring adsorption. The analysis of equilibrium data revealed the best description of MB adsorption behavior by the Langmuir isotherm model, whereas the Freundlich model described better the MG adsorption.

The Utilization of Mg-Al/Cu as Selective Adsorbent for Cationic Synthetic Dyes

Mg-Al-LDH is a chemical compound produced through co-precipitation technique and modified with Cu(NO3)2.6H2O to form Mg-Al/Cu. However, the research on the capability of these compounds for adsorbing mixtures of cationic dyes as well as malachite green (MG), methylene blue (MB), and Rodhamine-B (Rh-B) has not been carried out. Therefore, this research aims to determine the performance of Mg-Al-LDH and Mg-Al/Cu for removing cationic dyes. The materials used were characterized by using XRD powder, FT-IR, and N2 adsorption desorption. The Adsorption process was conducted by batch system and several effects were investigated, such as kinetic parameter, isotherm, and the temperature condition. The stability feature of Mg-Al-LDH and Mg-Al/Cu was obtained from the regeneration process in the five cycles. The results presented that Mg-Al/Cu was effectively produced, which was indicated by the formation of layer at 10.792° (003), 22.94° (006), 35.53° (112), 55.78° (110), and  56.59° (116). Mg-Al-LDH and Mg-Al/Cu were found to adsorbed MG than the other cationic dyes with adsorption capacity of 68.996 mg/g and 104.167 mg/g, respectively. The unique properties of Mg-Al/Cu includes, structural stability towards the reuse of adsorbent subsequently for five times, without significant decrease of adsorption capacity. Adsorptive removal of eriochrome black T (EBT) dye by using surface active low cost zinc oxide nanoparticles: A comparative overview

The ecological toxicity imparted by non-biodegradable organic dyes has been considered as a major risk to handle in front of mankind. In this view, the low-cost zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) were facially synthesized by coating the surface with surfactant (CTAB) and ionic liquid (BMTF) molecules for the effective removal of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) from aqueous media. Various advanced characterization techniques have given insight into the morphological features, crystalline structure and physio-chemical properties of as-synthesized ZnO-NPs. The systematic analysis of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics models specifies that the adsorption of EBT follow Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. The intraparticle diffusion model displayed a linear relationship (R² = 0.98, 0.97 and 0.94 for BMTF@ZnO, CTAB@ZnO and bare ZnO-NPs), which shows that pore diffusion rate is affected by surface modification and effects the overall EBT adsorption process. Furthermore, after the removal of 87% and 84% of EBT dye by BMTF@ZnO-NPs and CTAB@ZnO-NPs, the fabricated nanoadsorbents of ZnO were successfully regenerated and reused after the treatments up to four times. The adsorption aptitude of ZnO-NPs towards EBT dye was systematically explored in real wastewater samples and interference study of inorganic metallic salts was also performed. The toxicity estimations of the treated dye solutions were made using floral and fungal activities, to ascertain their non-toxic nature before releasing into the environment. These outcomes have supported the immense potential of ZnO-NPs towards the removal of EBT in a cost effective manner.

Mg-Al/Biochar Composite with Stable Structure for Malachite Green Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions

Mg-Al-layered double hydroxide (LDH) was fabricated using a coprecipitation method at pH 10. Thereafter, Mg-Al-LDH was impregnated with biochar to manufacture a Mg-Al/Biochar composite. The composite was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, N2 adsorption—desorption, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) experiments, and was subsequently used for malachite green (MG) adsorption. MG adsorption experiments were performed in a batch system, and the effects of temperature and adsorption kinetic and isotherm parameters on the adsorption process were analyzed. The stability of Mg-Al/Biochar was evaluated using regeneration experiments over three cycles. The peaks at 11.47° (003), 22.86° (002), 34.69° (012), and 61.62° (116), in the XRD profile of Mg-Al/Biochar suggested that Mg-Al/Biochar was successfully fabricated. The surface area of Mg-Al/Biochar was up to five times larger than that of pristine Mg-Al-LDH. The adsorption of MG on Mg-Al/Biochar was dominated by interactions at the surface of the adsorbent and was classified as physical adsorption; moreover the maximum adsorption capacity ofMg-Al/Biochar was 70.922 mg/g. Furthermore, the MG removal of Mg-Al/Biochar during three successive adsorption cycles (i.e. 66.73%, 65.57%, and 65.77% for the first, second, and third adsorption cycle) did not change significantly, which indicated the stable structure of the adsorbent. Insight into the Adsorption and Photocatalytic Behaviors of an Organo-bentonite/Co3O4 Green Nanocomposite for Malachite Green Synthetic Dye and Cr(VI) Metal Ions: Application and Mechanisms

A green composite of organically modified bentonite supported by Co3O4 nanoparticles (OB/Co) was successfully fabricated and investigated as a potential eco-friendly, low-cost adsorbent and photocatalyst for promising removal of both malachite green dye (MG.D) and Cr(VI) ions. The composite showed high adsorption properties and achieved experimental q max values of 223 and 139 mg/g for MG.D and Cr(VI) after equilibration times of 360 min and 480 min for the inspected contaminants, respectively. The kinetic and equilibrium inspection reflected the best description of their adsorption behaviors by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. This revealed favorable and homogeneous uptake of both MG.D and Cr(VI) in a monolayer form with theoretical Langmuir q max values of 343.6 and 194.5 mg/g, respectively. The theoretical adsorption energies of MG.D (0.6 kJ/mol) and Cr(VI) (0.5 kJ/mol) from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model revealed physisorption properties that might be resulted from some types of Coulombic attractive forces, achieving theoretical q max values of 226.5 and 144.6 mg/g, respectively. The suggested adsorption mechanism was confirmed by the main mathematical parameters of thermodynamic studies that revealed physical, spontaneous, and exothermic uptake processes. Also, the composite showed high photocatalytic performance under visible light, which resulted in a 100% removal percentage of 100 mg/L of MG.D and Cr(VI) after about 180 and 240 min, respectively, from the adsorption equilibrium time.

Colorimetric determination of F-, Br- and I- ions by Ehrlich's bio-reagent oxidation over enzyme mimic like gold nanoparticles: Peroxidase-like activity and multivariate optimization

Citrate and polyvinyl alcohol capped gold nanoparticles (PVA-GNPs) were synthesized via chemical reduction technique and fully characterized by DLS, SEM, EDS, XRD, UV-Vis and FT-IR analysis. A simple and practical colorimetric sensor based on red-ox reaction of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DABA) as ehrlich's bio-reagent and Au(III) with H₂O₂ on PVA-GNPs mimic catalyst with enzyme-like activity, has been fabricated for determination of F^-, Br^- and I^- halide anions. Prepared PVA-GNPs, can simultaneously catalyze the disintegration of H₂O₂, that used to reduce Au(III) ions into co-doped Au-NPs and oxidation of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent while in the presence of halide ions Au-X complex can be formed and improved sensor selectivity. Halide ions (F^-, Br^- and I^-) effectively diminishes the catalytic activity of GNPs to disintegrate oxygenated water by the interaction among Au⁺ and Au⁰ and suppressing oxidation of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent. In this system which contains PVA-GNPs, H₂O₂, p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent, and Au(III), increasing the halide ions (F^-, Br^- and I^-) concentration show color changes from deep green to red. In view of this rule, in this work, a novel colorimetric technique for sensitive determination of F^-, Br^- and I^- was developed. This method has the detection limits of 2.60 × 10^-6 M, 6.64 × 10^-8 M and 9.93 × 10^-9 M and linear ranges between 1.98 × 10^-5-1.22 × 10^-3 M, 1.99 × 10^-6-2.0 × 10^-4 M and 1.07 × 10^-7- 2.86 × 10^-5 M for F^-, Br^- and I^-, respectively. Assays are highly selective over other ions. They effectively applied to detection of halide ions in real water samples.

Potential use of ZnO@activated carbon nanocomposites for the adsorptive removal of Cd2+ ions in aqueous solutions

Nowadays, the pollution in water resources has become a major concern, both environmentally and in perspective of human health. The bioaccumulation of pollutants, especially heavy metal ions through the food chain, poses a hazardous risk to humans and other living organisms. Nanomaterials and their composites have been recognized for their potential to resolve such problems. Herein, ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized via different microscopic/spectroscopic techniques. ZnO nanoparticles (i.e., 20 to 50 nm) were obtained in high yield via a facile chemical approach. The ratio of ZnO nanoparticles and activated carbon was optimized to achieve enhanced electrostatic interactions for the effective adsorption of cadmium ions (Cd²⁺). The adsorptive performance of the nanocomposite was further assessed in relation to several key parameters (e.g., contact time, solution pH, and adsorbent/adsorbate dosage). The nanocomposites (1 mg/ml) offered amaximum adsorption capacity of 96.2 mg/g for Cd²⁺ ions as confirmed through adsorption isotherms for a best interpretation of the adsorption phenomenon. The favourable adsorption capacity of the synthesized ZnO/activated carbon (9:1) nanocomposites supported their use as an efficient sorbent material in practical performance metrics (e.g., partition coefficient of 0.54 mg g^-1μM^-1) for the adsorption of Cd²⁺ ions.

Optimization and modeling of simultaneous ultrasound-assisted adsorption of ternary dyes using copper oxide nanoparticles immobilized on activated carbon using response surface methodology and artificial neural network

The present study examines simultaneous adsorption of ternary dyes such as rose bengal (RB), safranin O (SO) and malachite green (MG) from aqueous media on copper oxide nanoparticles immobilized on activated carbon (CuO-NPs-AC) in a batch system. To forecast and optimize the adsorption, artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) were utilized. The effect of various factors, e.g. dye concentration, sonication time, adsorbent dosage and pH on the adsorption process were evaluated through five level six factor central composite design (CCD) using RSM. Maximum removal efficiency of MG, SO and RB dyes were seen 94.26%, 71% and 76% under optimal operating conditions. The suggested quadratic models revealed good fit with the actual data. To testing the data, the coefficients of determination (R²) of 0.9976, 0.9971 and 0.9952 and Fisher F-values of 2048.92, 1660.95 and 926.84 were obtained for MG, SO and RB dyes, respectively. The same data were utilized to construct the ANN models. The results revealed that both models yielded high R² values, while the RSM models were slightly more accurate in predictions as compared to ANN models for MG, SO and RB dyes removal. The equilibrium data followed the Langmuir isotherm model, although the rate of the adsorption process well fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics. The maximum adsorption capacity of the CuO-NPs-AC for MG, SO and RB were found to be 212.79, 149.25 and 172.42 mg/g, respectively.

Recyclable magnetic carbonaceous porous composites derived from MIL-100(Fe) for superior adsorption and removal of malachite green from aqueous solution

Development of novel porous materials for efficient adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants from aqueous solution is of great importance and interest in environmental science and chemistry. Herein, we reported a facile synthesis of recyclable magnetic carbonaceous porous composite derived from iron-based metal–organic framework MIL-100(Fe) for superior adsorption and removal of malachite green (MG) from aqueous solution. Because of large surface area and high porosity, the synthesized magnetic carbonaceous porous material presented a superior adsorption capacity of 2090 mg g⁻¹ for MG. The adsorption of MG on magnetic carbonaceous porous composite is endothermic and spontaneous. The prepared magnetic carbonaceous porous composite could be separated easily and rapidly from the solution matrix by an external magnet. The rapid adsorption, large adsorption capacity and good reusability make it attractive for practical use in the adsorption and removal of dyes from aqueous solutions.

Magnetic carbonaceous porous composites (MCPCs) showed excellent adsorption capacity (up to 2090 mg g⁻¹) for malachite green with good reusability and stability.

Xerogel activated diatoms as an effective hybrid adsorbent for the efficient removal of malachite green

The surface of a naturally available diatom was modified using a xerogel for the enhanced removal of malachite green from aqueous media.

Sonochemical-solvothermal synthesis of guanine embedded copper based metal-organic framework (MOF) and its effect on oprD gene expression in clinical and standard strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The guanine incropped Cu based metal-organic framework (Guanine-Cu-MOF) was synthesized by facile one-step sonochemical method by simply mixing of 4-4, biphenyldicarboxylic, guanine and copper nitrate (Bio-Cu-H₂bpdc-Gu). The prepared guanine-MOF was characterized by using X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques. The morphology of prepared material was sponge-shaped which it was well documented, together with the presence of existing functional groups. The effect of prepared material on oprD Gene Expression was investigated in Clinical and Standard Strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO-1) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of prepared samples against P. aeruginosa strains were determined through the broth micro-dilution method. The expression of oprD gene in strains affected by Cu-H₂bpdc-Gu was quantitatively investigated through real-time PCR. MIC of Bio-Cu-H₂bpdc-Gu was 400 μg/mL for the standard and clinical strains of P. aeruginosa, while, MBC of this compound was 700 μg/mL for standard strain and 800 μg/mL for clinical strains. The highest and the lowest rate of oprD gene expression were found to be 3.6 and 1.1 fold in the strains, respectively.

A simple approach for the sonochemical loading of Au, Ag and Pd nanoparticle on functionalized MWCNT and subsequent dispersion studies for removal of organic dyes: Artificial neural network and response surface methodology studies

In this study, the artificial neural network (ANN) and response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) were applied for modeling and optimization of the simultaneous ultrasound-assisted removal of quinoline yellow (QY) and eosin B (EB). The MWCNT-NH₂ and its composites were prepared by sonochemistry method and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis's. Initial dyes concentrations, adsorbent mass, sonication time and pH contribution on QY and EB removal percentage were investigated by CCD and replication of experiments at conditions suggested by model has results which statistically are close to experimented data. The ultrasound irradiation is associated with raising mass transfer of process so that small amount of the adsorbent (0.025 g) is able to remove high percentage (88.00% and 91.00%) of QY and EB, respectively in short time (6.0 min) at pH = 6. Analysis of experimental data by conventional models is good indication of Langmuir efficiency for fitting and explanation of experimented data. The ANN based on the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LMA) combined of linear transfer function at output layer and tangent sigmoid transfer function at hidden layer with 20 hidden neurons supply best operation conditions for good prediction of adsorption data. Accurate and efficient artificial neural network was obtained by changing the number of neurons in the hidden layer, while data was divided into training, test and validation sets which contained 70, 15 and 15% of data points respectively. The Average absolute deviation (AAD)% of a collection of 128 data points for MWCNT-NH₂ and composites is 0.58%.for EB and 0.55 for YQ.

Preparation and characterization of monoliths HKUST-1 MOF via straightforward conversion of Cu(OH)2-based monoliths and its application for wastewater treatment: artificial neural network and central composite design modeling

Sonochemical-assisted synthesis of CuO/Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles as efficient photocatalyst for simultaneous degradation of pollutant dyes in rotating packed bed reactor: LED illumination and central composite design optimization

CuO/CuO₂/Cu nanoparticles were prepared by sonochemical combined thermal synthesis method and used as new photocatalyst for simultaneous photocatalytic degradation of safranin O (SO) and methylene blue (MB) dyes in rotating packed bed reactor equipped to blue light emitting diode (LED). The physicochemical properties of the synthesized CuO/Cu₂O/Cu nanoparticles were investigated by XRD, SEM and DRS analysis. The band-gap of the prepared CuO/Cu₂O/Cu-NPs was estimated to be about 1.42eV which is appropriate for photodegradation process under blue light irradiation. In rotating packed bed reactors, two key parameters are very important, one high centrifugal field and other porous media, which intensify mass transfer operation leads to photodegradation improvement. The maximum photodegradation efficiency was obtained at pH of 6 and subsequently the effects of CuO/Cu₂O/Cu-NPs dosage, rotational speed, initial dyes concentration, flow rate and reaction time were studied by central composite design (CCD) and optimized values were found to be 0.3g/L, 900rpm, 10mg/L of both dyes, 0.3L/min and 90min, respectively. Finally, results showed that synergistic effects induced by forming Cu₂O/CuO heterojunction containing Cu-NPs co-cocatalyst greatly accelerate electron transfer and effectively retard the reduction of CuO by photo-generated electrons.

Isotherms and kinetic study of ultrasound-assisted adsorption of malachite green and Pb2+ ions from aqueous samples by copper sulfide nanorods loaded on activated carbon: Experimental design optimization

Copper sulfide nanorods loaded on activated carbon (CuS-NRs-AC) was synthesized and used for simultaneous ultrasound-assisted adsorption of malachite green (MG) and Pb²⁺ ions from aqueous solution. Following characterization of CuS-NRs-AC were investigated by SEM, EDX, TEM and XRD, the effects of pH (2.0-10), amount of adsorbent (0.003-0.011g), MG concentration (5-25mgL^-1), Pb²⁺ concentration (3-15mgL^-1) and sonication time (1.5-7.5min) and their interactions on responses were investigated by central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology. According to desirability function on the Design Expert optimum removal (99.4%±1.0 for MG and 68.3±1.8 for Pb²⁺ions) was obtained at pH 6.0, 0.009g CuS-NRs-AC, 6.0min mixing by sonication and 15 and 6mgL^-1 for MG and Pb²⁺ ions, respectively. High determination coefficient (R²>0.995), Pred-R²-value (>0.920) and Adju-R²-value (>0.985) all are good indication of best agreement between the experimental and design modelling. The adsorption kinetics follows the pseudo-second order model and adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacity of 145.98 and 47.892mgg^-1 for MG and Pb²⁺ ions, respectively. This adsorbent over short contact time is good choice for simultaneous removal of large content of both MG and Pb²⁺ ions from wastewater sample.

Design of a new technique based on combination of ultrasound waves via magnetite solid phase and cloud point microextraction for determination of Cr(III) ions

In this work, we focused on development of a new techniques by coupling of ultrasound irradiation, cloud point method and magnetite solid phase microextraction for the extraction and preconcentration of Cr(III) ions from aqueous solutions. In order to reduce cost and improve practicability of proposed process a new efficient and regenerable magnetite sorbent (functionalized chitosan grafted-amino graphene oxide (GO) decorated by zinc ferrite nanoparticles (CS-GO-Zn: Fe₂O₄)) was synthesized through hydrothermal method and then characterized by FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS and XRD analysis. Effect of initial sample volume and type, volume and concentration of eluent on the ER%_Cr(III) were investigated and optimized using one at a time method. Correlation between the main and interaction effects of other operational parameters such as Cr(III) ion concentration, CS-GO-Zn: Fe₂O₄ mass, sonication time, pH and solution temperature on the ER%_Cr(III) were investigated and optimized by central composite design coupled with desirability function approach. The results revealed that there were significant effects for most investigated terms on the ER%_Cr(III) and maximum ER% of 88.09% was obtained in desirability value of 1.0. This maximum efficiency was obtained at 0.035µg/mL Cr(III) ion concentration, 40.16°C temperature, 0.016g of CS-GO-Zn: Fe₂O₄, pH 6.36 and 9.20min sonication time. In addition, under the optimal conditions the linear range, limit of detection, enrichment factor and relative standard deviation were found to be 0.02-4.4µg/mL, 0.002µg/mL, 23.23 and 1.68% respectively. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the separation and preconcentration of Cr(III) ion from tap, river and mineral waters.

Rapid and high-capacity ultrasonic assisted adsorption of ternary toxic anionic dyes onto MOF-5-activated carbon: Artificial neural networks, partial least squares, desirability function and isotherm and kinetic study

The present paper focused on the ultrasonic assisted simultaneous removal of fast green (FG), eosin Y (EY) and quinine yellow (QY) from aqueous media following using MOF-5 as a metal organic framework and activated carbon hybrid (AC-MOF-5). The structure and morphology of AC-MOF-5 was identified by SEM, FTIR and XRD analysis. The interactive and main effects of variables such as pH, initial dyes concentration (mgL^-1), adsorbent dosage (mg) and sonication time (min) on removal percentage were studied by central composite design (CCD), subsequent desirability function (DF) permit to achieved real variable experimental condition. Optimized values were found 7.06, 5.68, 7.59 and 5.04mgL^-1, 0.02g and 2.55min for pH, FG, EY and QY concentration, adsorbent dosage and sonication time, respectively. Under this conditions removal percentage were obtained 98.1%, 98.1% and 91.91% for FG, EY and QY, respectively. Two models, namely partial least squares (PLS) and multi-layer artificial neural network (ANN) model were used for building up to construct an empirical model to predict the dyes under study removal behavior. The obtained results show that ANN and PLS model is a powerful tool for prediction of under-study dyes adsorption by AC-MOF-5. The evaluation and estimation of equilibrium data from traditional isotherm models display that the Langmuir model indicated the best fit to the equilibrium data with maximum adsorption capacity of 21.230, 20.242 and 18.621mgg^-1, for FG, EY and QY, respectively, while the adsorption rate efficiently follows the pseudo-second-order model.

Adsorption removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solution

In this review, the state of the art on the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solution using adsorption technique is presented. The objective is to critically analyze different adsorbents available for malachite green dye removal. Hence, the available recent literature in the area is categorized according to the cost, feasibility, and availability of adsorbents. An extensive survey of the adsorbents, derived from various sources such as low cost biological materials, waste material from industry, agricultural waste, polymers, clays, nanomaterials, and magnetic materials, has been carried out. The review studies on different adsorption factors, such as pH, concentration, adsorbent dose, and temperature. The fitting of the adsorption data to various models, isotherms, and kinetic regimes is also reported.
