Phase Equilibria of the Ti-Nb-Mn Ternary System at 1173K, 1273K and 1373K

Phase equilibria in the Ti-Nb-Mn ternary system at 1173K, 1273K and 1373K were studied through the equilibrated alloy method by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. A new stable ternary phase K was confirmed and the composition was around Ti50Nb7Mn43. A wide-range continuous solid solution phase (Ti,Nb)Mn2 with the C14 Laves structure had been found at these temperatures due to the same phase structures of TiMn2 and NbMn2 phases. The solubility of Nb in TiMn4, αTiMn and βTiMn intermetallic compounds was determined. Based on the experimental results and reasonable extrapolations, the isothermal sections of Ti-Nb-Mn ternary system at 1173K, 1273K and 1373K were constructed.

A review on alloy design, biological response, and strengthening of β-titanium alloys as biomaterials

From the past few years, developments of β-Ti alloys have been the subject of active research in the medical domain. The current paper highlights significant findings in the area of β-Ti alloy design, biological responses, strengthening mechanisms, and developing low-cost implants with a high degree of biocompatibility. It is evident that an astonishing demand for developing the low modulus-high strength implants can be fulfilled by synchronizing β stabilizer content and incorporating tailored thermo-mechanical techniques. Furthermore, the biological response of the implants is as important as the physical properties that regulate healing response; hence, the optimum selection of alloying elements plays a curial role for clinical success. The paper also presents the evolution of patents in this field from the year 2010 to 2020 showing the relevant innovations that may benefit a wide range of researchers.

On the elaboration of the next generation of thermodynamic models of solid solutions

Thermodynamic models of solid solutions used in computational thermochemistry have not been modernized in recent years. With the advent of fast and cheap computers, it is nowadays possible to add, at a minimal computational cost, physical ingredients such as coordination numbers, inter-atomic distances and classical interatomic potentials to the function describing the energetics of ordered and disordered solid solutions. As we show here, the integration of these elements into a robust statistical thermodynamic model of solution establishes natural connections with other deterministic and stochastic atomistic methods such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations. Ultimately, all these numerical approaches need to be self-consistent and generate complementary sets of numerical thermo-physical properties. The present work proposes a new formalism to define the Gibbs free energy of ordered and disordered solid solutions. It allows for a complete prediction of the thermal, volumetric and compositional dependence of the Gibbs free energy by solving a constrained minimization problem. As a proof of concept, we explore the energetic behavior of pure face-centered cubic gold as well as the AuCu L1₀ ordered solution as a function of both temperature and pressure. We finally compare these results with the average properties obtained from classical molecular dynamics simulations and explain the origin of the existing differences between the two approaches based on how the temperature is accounted for in each method.

Probing Nanoscale Phase Separation at Atomic Resolution within β-Type Ti-Mn Alloy: A Potential Candidate for Biomedical Implants

Biocompatible β-type Ti alloys with high ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength are potential candidates for certain orthopedic and cardiovascular implants. Aiming for these applications, Ti alloy with 14 wt % Mn (Ti-14 Mn) as β-stabilizer was processed through thermomechanical treatment along with solutionizing and quenching, followed by 95% cold rolling, which resulted in ultrahigh UTS and yield strength. 3-[4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolimbromide assay with different cell lines suggests efficient cell growth on alloy surface without compromising biocompatibility. Cell adhesion and spreading assay show that cells are not only able to attach to the alloy surface but also able to spread and grow with normal morphology, which projects this material as a potential candidate for biomedical application. Previous studies on binary β-type Ti alloy systems treated with the above-mentioned processing route confirm the presence of nanoscale phase separation, which enhances its mechanical properties. To discover the same phenomena in the alloy of the present study, bright-field and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) imaging experiments were performed and nanoscale contrast-modulated lamella regions were observed. Geometrical phase analysis on complex-valued exit wave, reconstructed using focal series HRTEM images, demonstrates that the lamella is a result of d-spacing modulation. Ab initio calculation indicates that d-spacing modulation with the same crystal structure occurs due to composition modulation and was proved by scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging coupled with quantitative energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Correlating contrast, strain, and composition modulation confirms nanoscale phase separation, which is the first report of this phenomenon in Ti-Mn alloy system.
