Synthesis, Structure and (Photo)Catalytic Behavior of Ce-MOFs Containing Perfluoroalkylcarboxylate Linkers: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

Cerium-based Metal-Organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) are attracting increasing interest due to their similar structural features to zirconium MOFs. The redox behavior of Ce(III/IV) adds a range of properties to the compounds. Recently, perfluorinated linkers have been used in the synthesis of MOFs to introduce new characteristic into the structure. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of Ce(IV)-based MOFs constructed using two perfluorinated alkyl linkers. Their structure, based on hexanuclear Ce6O4(OH)4 12+ clusters linked to each other by the dicarboxylate ions, has been solved ab-initio from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method. The crystallization kinetics and the MOF formation mechanism was also invesitigated by Synchrotron radiation with XAS spectroscopies (EXAFS and XANES). The MOFs present the same fcu cubic topology as observed in MOF-801 and UiO-66, and they showed good stability in water at different pH conditions. The electronic structure of these MOFs has been studied by DFT calculations in order to obtain insights into the density of states structure of the reported compounds, resulting in band gaps in the range of 2.8-3.1 eV. Their catalytic properties were tested both thermally and under visible light irradiation for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye.

Unveiling the mechanisms of carboxylic acid esterification on acid zeolites for biomass-to-energy: A review of the catalytic process through experimental and computational studies

In recent years, there has been significant interest from industrial and academic areas in the esterification of carboxylic acids catalyzed by acidic zeolites, as it represents a sustainable and economically viable approach to producing a wide range of high-value-added products. However, there is a lack of comprehensive reviews that address the intricate reaction mechanisms occurring at the catalyst interface at both the experimental and atomistic levels. Therefore, in this review, we provide an overview of the esterification reaction on acidic zeolites based on experimental and theoretical studies. The combination of infrared spectroscopy with atomistic calculations and experimental strategies using modulation excitation spectroscopy techniques combined with phase-sensitive detection is presented as an approach to detecting short-lived intermediates at the interface of zeolitic frameworks under realistic reaction conditions. To achieve this goal, this review has been divided into four sections: The first is a brief introduction highlighting the distinctive features of this review. The second addresses questions about the topology and activity of different zeolitic systems, since these properties are closely correlated in the esterification process. The third section deals with the mechanisms proposed in the literature. The fourth section presents advances in IR techniques and theoretical calculations that can be applied to gain new insights into reaction mechanisms. Finally, this review concludes with a subtle approach, highlighting the main aspects and perspectives of combining experimental and theoretical techniques to elucidate different reaction mechanisms in zeolitic systems.

Green, Safe, and Reliable Synthesis of Bimetallic MOF-808 Nanozymes With Enhanced Aqueous Stability and Reactivity for Biological Applications

Bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising nanomaterials whose reactivity towards biomolecules remains challenging due to issues related to synthesis, stability, control over metal oxidation state, phase purity, and atomic level characterization. Here, these shortcomings are rationally addressed through development of a synthesis of mixed metal Zr/Ce-MOFs in aqueous environment, overcoming significant hurdles in the development of MOF nanozymes, sufficiently stable on biologically relevant conditions. Specifically, a green and safe synthesis of Zr/Ce-MOF-808 is reported in water/acetic acid mixture which affords remarkably water-stable materials with reliable nanozymatic reactivity, including MOFs with a high Ce content previously reported to be unstable in water. The new materials outperform analogous bimetallic MOF nanozymes, showcasing that rational synthesis modifications could impart outstanding improvements. Further, atomic-level characterization by X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) confirmed superior nanozymes arise from differences in the synthetic method, which results in aqueous stable materials, and Ce incorporation, which perturbs the ligand exchange dynamics of the material, and could ultimately be used to fine tune the intrinsic MOF reactivity. Similar rational strategies which leverage metals in a synergistic manner should enable other water-stable bimetallic MOF nanozymes able to surpass existing ones, laying the path for varied biotechnological applications.

Efficient removal of organic dyes using electrospun nanofibers with Ce-based UiO-66 MOFs

Cerium-based UiO-66 (Ce-UiO-66) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized via a facile solvothermal method and fully characterized using FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM, EDX, and zeta potential techniques. The synthesized Ce-UiO-66 particles were embedded into an electrospun cross-linked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CTS) nanofiber (EPCNF), and then employed to remove organic dyes from water. The adsorption results demonstrated that the adsorption capacities of both anionic (Congo Red (CR), Methyl Orange (MO) and Methyl Red (MR)) and cationic (Methylene Blue (MB)) dyes over the fabricated electrospun nanofibers (ENFs) increased with increasing the loadings of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs. Accordingly, the adsorption performance of EPCNF-10 (containing 10 wt% of Ce-UiO-66 MOFs) adsorbent toward these organic dyes is in the order of CR (102.04 mg/g) > MO (87.71 mg/g) > MR (65.35 mg/g) > MB (34.24 mg/g). Moreover, it was found that the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were appropriate for describing the adsorption behaviors of EPCNF-10 adsorbent toward both anionic and cationic dyes. Thus, it can be proposed that the fabricated EPCNF-10 adsorbent would be effective adsorbent materials for the removal of anionic and cationic dyes from water due to its excellent adsorption performance, facile preparation, good regeneration, and simple separation from aqueous solutions.

Yolk-Shell and Hollow Zr/Ce-UiO-66 for Manipulating Selectivity in Tandem Reactions and Photoreactions

One of the hallmarks of multicomponent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is to finely tune their active centers to achieve product selectivity. In particular, obtaining bimetallic MOF hollow structures with precisely tailored redox centers under the same topology is still challenging despite a recent surge of such efforts. Herein, we present an engineering strategy named "cluster labilization" to generate hierarchically porous MOF composites with hollow structures and tunable active centers. By partially replacing zirconium with cerium in the hexanuclear clusters of UiO-66, unevenly distributed yolk-shell structures (YSS) were formed. Through acid treatment or annealing of the YSS precursor, single-shell hollow structures (SSHS) or double-shell hollow structures (DSHS) can be obtained, respectively. The active centers in SSHS and DSHS differ in their species, valence, and spatial locations. More importantly, YSS, SSHS, and DSHS with distinct active centers and microenvironments exhibit tunable catalytic activity, reversed selectivity, and high stability in the tandem reaction and the photoreaction.

Synergic Effect of Isolated Ce3+ and Ptδ+ Species in UiO-66(Ce) for Heterogeneous Catalysis

In this work, we have synthesized through an efficient electrostatic deposition a Pt single-atom catalyst (SAC) supported on a Ce-MOF. The basic solution employed in the impregnation process favors the deprotonation of the hydroxyl groups allocated on the clusters that can easily interact with the cationic Pt species. The resulting material, denoted as Pt/UiO-66(Ce), shows an increment of Ce³⁺ content, as demonstrated by UV-vis and Ce L₃-edge XANES spectroscopy. These Ce³⁺ species and their corresponding oxygen vacancies are able to accommodate very disperse Pt single sites. Moreover, Pt L₃-edge XANES and CO-FTIR spectroscopy confirm the cationic nature of the supported Pt^δ+ (2+ < δ < 4+). For comparison purpose, we have synthesized and characterized a well-known Pt single-site catalyst supported on nanocrystalline ceria, denoted as Pt/nCeO₂. Since the simultaneous presence of Ce³⁺ and Pt^δ+ on the MOF clusters were able to activate the oxygen molecules and the CO molecule, respectively, we tested Pt/UiO-66(Ce) for the CO oxidation reaction. Interestingly, this catalyst showed ∼six-fold increment in activity in comparison with the traditional Pt/nCeO₂ material. Finally, the characterization after catalysis reveals that the Pt nature is preserved and that the activity is maintained during 14 h at 100 °C without any evidence of deactivation.

Cooperative CO2 adsorption mechanism in a perfluorinated CeIV-based metal organic framework

Adsorbents able to uptake large amounts of gases within a narrow range of pressure, i.e., phase-change adsorbents, are emerging as highly interesting systems to achieve excellent gas separation performances with little energy input for regeneration. A recently discovered phase-change metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbent is F4_MIL-140A(Ce), based on Ce^IV and tetrafluoroterephthalate. This MOF displays a non-hysteretic step-shaped CO₂ adsorption isotherm, reaching saturation in conditions of temperature and pressure compatible with real life application in post-combustion carbon capture, biogas upgrading and acetylene purification. Such peculiar behaviour is responsible for the exceptional CO₂/N₂ selectivity and reverse CO₂/C₂H₂ selectivity of F4_MIL-140A(Ce). Here, we combine data obtained from a wide pool of characterisation techniques - namely gas sorption analysis, in situ infrared spectroscopy, in situ powder X-ray diffraction, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, multinuclear solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and adsorption microcalorimetry - with periodic density functional theory simulations to provide evidence for the existence of a unique cooperative CO₂ adsorption mechanism in F4_MIL-140A(Ce). Such mechanism involves the concerted rotation of perfluorinated aromatic rings when a threshold partial pressure of CO₂ is reached, opening the gate towards an adsorption site where CO₂ interacts with both open metal sites and the fluorine atoms of the linker.

Interstitial Water Improves Structural Stability of Iron Hexacyanoferrate for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) are considered one of the promising cathodes for sodium-ion batteries because of their low cost and tunable structure. As an intrinsic characteristic, the influence of structured water in PBAs on the electrochemical properties is still controversial. Herein, low-vacancy iron hexacyanoferrate with different interstitial water contents is synthesized through the citric acid-assisted single iron source method. Ex situ Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction characterization reveals that the interstitial water can stably exist in the Prussian blue framework during repeated cycling. The long-standing interstitial water can reduce the volume change during the Na⁺ insertion/extraction process, resulting in improved cycling stability. Thanks to the low Fe(CN)₆^4- vacancies and pillar role of interstitial water in the crystal framework, the HW-PB exhibits a high reversible capacity of 117 mAh g^-1 and excellent long cycle performance with a capacity retention of 91% after 1380 cycles. This work broadens the understanding of the relationship between the interstitial water in PBAs and Na-storage performances, providing guidance for the precise synthesis of high-quality PBAs.

The chemistry of Ce-based metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained widespread attention due to their modular construction that allows the tuning of their properties. Within this vast class of compounds, metal carboxylates containing tri- and tetravalent metal ions have been in the focus of many studies due to their often high thermal and chemical stabilities. Cerium has a rich chemistry, which depends strongly on its oxidation state. Ce(iii) exhibits properties typically observed for rare earth elements, while Ce(iv) is mostly known for its oxidation behaviour. In MOF chemistry this is reflected in their unique optical and catalytic properties. The synthetic parameters for Ce(iii)- and Ce(iv)-MOFs also differ substantially and conditions must be chosen to prevent reduction of Ce(iv) for the formation of the latter. Ce(iii)-MOFs are usually reported in comprehensive studies together with those constructed with other RE elements and normally they are isostructural. They exhibit a greater structural diversity, which is reflected in the larger variety of inorganic building units. In contrast, the synthesis conditions of Ce(iv)-MOFs were only recently (2015) established. These lead selectively to hexanuclear Ce-O clusters that are well-known for Zr-MOFs and therefore very similar structural and isoreticluar chemistry is found. Hence Ce(iv)-MOFs exhibit often high porosity, while only a few porous Ce(iii)-MOFs have been described. Some of these show structural flexibility which makes them interesting for separation processes. For Ce(iv)-MOFs the redox properties are most relevant. Thus, they are intensively discussed for catalytic, photocatalytic and sensing applications. In this perspective, the synthesis, structural chemistry and properties of Ce-MOFs are summarized.
