Synthesis, Structure and (Photo)Catalytic Behavior of Ce-MOFs Containing Perfluoroalkylcarboxylate Linkers: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

Cerium-based Metal-Organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) are attracting increasing interest due to their similar structural features to zirconium MOFs. The redox behavior of Ce(III/IV) adds a range of properties to the compounds. Recently, perfluorinated linkers have been used in the synthesis of MOFs to introduce new characteristic into the structure. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of Ce(IV)-based MOFs constructed using two perfluorinated alkyl linkers. Their structure, based on hexanuclear Ce6O4(OH)4 12+ clusters linked to each other by the dicarboxylate ions, has been solved ab-initio from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method. The crystallization kinetics and the MOF formation mechanism was also invesitigated by Synchrotron radiation with XAS spectroscopies (EXAFS and XANES). The MOFs present the same fcu cubic topology as observed in MOF-801 and UiO-66, and they showed good stability in water at different pH conditions. The electronic structure of these MOFs has been studied by DFT calculations in order to obtain insights into the density of states structure of the reported compounds, resulting in band gaps in the range of 2.8-3.1 eV. Their catalytic properties were tested both thermally and under visible light irradiation for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye.

Two-Dimensional Moiré Polaronic Electron Crystals

Two-dimensional moiré materials have emerged as the most versatile platform for realizing quantum phases of electrons. Here, we explore the stability origins of correlated states in WSe_{2}/WS_{2} moiré superlattices. We find that ultrafast electronic excitation leads to partial melting of the Mott states on timescales 5 times longer than predictions from the charge hopping integrals and that the melting rates are thermally activated, with activation energies of 18±3 and 13±2  meV for the one- and two-hole Mott states, respectively, suggesting significant electron-phonon coupling. A density functional theory calculation of the one-hole Mott state confirms polaron formation and yields a hole-polaron binding energy of 16 meV. These findings reveal a close interplay of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in stabilizing the polaronic Mott insulators at transition metal dichalcogenide moiré interfaces.

Ligand-Induced Chirality in ClMBA2 SnI4 2D Perovskite

Chiral perovskites possess a huge applicative potential in several areas of optoelectronics and spintronics. The development of novel lead-free perovskites with tunable properties is a key topic of current research. Herein, we report a novel lead-free chiral perovskite, namely (R/S-)ClMBA2 SnI4 (ClMBA=1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethanamine) and the corresponding racemic system. ClMBA2 SnI4 samples exhibit a low band gap (2.12 eV) together with broad emission extending in the red region of the spectrum (∼1.7 eV). Chirality transfer from the organic ligand induces chiroptical activity in the 465-530 nm range. Density functional theory calculations show a Rashba type band splitting for the chiral samples and no band splitting for the racemic isomer. Self-trapped exciton formation is at the origin of the large Stokes shift in the emission. Careful correlation with analogous lead and lead-free 2D chiral perovskites confirms the role of the symmetry-breaking distortions in the inorganic layers associated with the ligands as the source of the observed chiroptical properties providing also preliminary structure-property correlation in 2D chiral perovskites.

A universal ligand for lead coordination and tailored crystal growth in perovskite solar cells

Chemical environment and precursor-coordinating molecular interactions within a perovskite precursor solution can lead to important implications in structural defects and crystallization kinetics of a perovskite film. Thus, the opto-electronic quality of such films can be boosted by carefully fine-tuning the coordination chemistry of perovskite precursors via controllable introduction of additives, capable of forming intermediate complexes. In this work, we employed a new type of ligand, namely 1-phenylguanidine (PGua), which coordinates strongly with the PbI2 complexes in the perovskite precursor, forming new intermediate species. These strong interactions effectively retard the perovskite crystallization process and form homogeneous films with enlarged grain sizes and reduced density of defects. In combination with an interfacial treatment, the resulted champion devices exhibit a 24.6% efficiency with outstanding operational stability. Unprecedently, PGua can be applied in various PSCs with different perovskite compositions and even in both configurations: n-i-p and p-i-n, highlighting the universality of this ligand.

Multifunctional sulfonium-based treatment for perovskite solar cells with less than 1% efficiency loss over 4,500-h operational stability tests

The stabilization of grain boundaries and surfaces of the perovskite layer is critical to extend the durability of perovskite solar cells. Here we introduced a sulfonium-based molecule, dimethylphenethylsulfonium iodide (DMPESI), for the post-deposition treatment of formamidinium lead iodide perovskite films. The treated films show improved stability upon light soaking and remains in the black α phase after two years ageing under ambient condition without encapsulation. The DMPESI-treated perovskite solar cells show less than 1% performance loss after more than 4,500 h at maximum power point tracking, yielding a theoretical T80 of over nine years under continuous 1-sun illumination. The solar cells also display less than 5% power conversion efficiency drops under various ageing conditions, including 100 thermal cycles between 25 °C and 85 °C and an 1,050-h damp heat test.

Synergistic Role of Water and Oxygen Leads to Degradation in Formamidinium-Based Halide Perovskites

Mixed-cation metal halide perovskites have shown remarkable progress in photovoltaic applications with high power conversion efficiencies. However, to achieve large-scale deployment of this technology, efficiencies must be complemented by long-term durability. The latter is limited by external factors, such as exposure to humidity and air, which lead to the rapid degradation of the perovskite materials and devices. In this work, we study the mechanisms causing Cs and formamidinium (FA)-based halide perovskite phase transformations and stabilization during moisture and air exposure. We use in situ X-ray scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to study these chemical interactions and their effects on structure. We unravel a surface reaction pathway involving the dissolution of FAI by water and iodide oxidation by oxygen, driving the Cs/FA ratio into thermodynamically unstable regions, leading to undesirable phase transformations. This work demonstrates the interplay of bulk phase transformations with surface chemical reactions, providing a detailed understanding of the degradation mechanism and strategies for designing durable and efficient perovskite materials.

Origin of Broad Emission Induced by Rigid Aromatic Ditopic Cations in Low-Dimensional Metal Halide Perovskites

The development of broadband emitters based on metal halide perovskites (MHPs) requires the elucidation of structure-emission property correlations. Herein, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on a series of novel low-dimensional lead chloride perovskites, including ditopic aromatic cations. Synthesized lead chloride perovskites and their bromide analogues show both narrow and broad photoluminescence emission properties as a function of their cation and halide nature. Structural analysis shows a correlation between the rigidity of the ditopic cations and the lead halide octahedral distortions. Density functional theory calculations reveal, in turn, the pivotal role of octahedral distortions in the formation of self-trapped excitons, which are responsible for the insurgence of broad emission and large Stokes shifts together with a contribution of halide vacancies. For the considered MHP series, the use of conventional octahedral distortion parameters allows us to nicely describe the trend of emission properties, thus providing a solid guide for further materials design.

Modeling the Interaction of Coronavirus Membrane Phospholipids with Photocatalitically Active Titanium Dioxide

The outbreak of viral infectious diseases urges airborne droplet and surface disinfection strategies, which may rely on photocatalytic semiconductors. A lipid bilayer membrane generally encloses coronaviruses and promotes the anchoring on the semiconductor surface, where, upon photon absorption, electron-hole pairs are produced, which can react with adsorbed oxygen-containing species and lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). The photogenerated ROSs may support the disruptive oxidation of the lipidic membrane and pathogen death. Density functional theory calculations are employed to investigate adsorption modes, energetics, and electronic structure of a reference phospholipid on anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles. The phospholipid covalently bound on TiO₂, engaging a stronger adsorption on the (101) than on the (001) surface. The energetically most stable structure involves the formation of four covalent bonds through phosphate and carbonyl oxygen atoms. The adsorbates show a reduction of the band gap compared with standalone TiO₂, suggesting a significant interfacial coupling.

High frame-rate contrast enhanced ultrasound (HIFR-CEUS) in the characterization of small hepatic lesions in cirrhotic patients

BACKGROUND

To show the effectiveness of plane wave HighFrame-Rate CEUS (HiFR-CEUS) compared with "conventional" (plane wave) CEUS (C-CEUS) in the characterization of small (< 2 cm) focal liver lesions (FLLs) not easily detected by CT in cirrhotic patients. HiFR-CEUS exploit an ultra-wideband nonlinear process to combine fundamental, second and higher-order harmonic signals generated by ultrasound contrast agents to increase the frame rate. C-CEUS is limited by the transmission principle, and its frame-rate is around 10 FPS. With HiFR-CEUS (Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co., China), the frame-rate reached 60 FPS.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ultrasound detected small FLLs (< 2 cm) in 63 cirrhotic patients during follow-up (June 2019-February 2020); (7 nodules < 1 cm and were not evaluable by spiral CT). Final diagnosis was obtained with MRI (47) or fine needle aspiration (16 cases) C-CEUS was performed and HiFR-CEUS was repeated after 5 min; 0.8-1.2 ml of contrast media (SonoVue, Bracco, Italy) was used. 57 nodules were better evaluable with HiFR-CEUS; 6 nodules were equally evaluable by both techniques; final diagnosis was: 44 benign lesions (29 hemangiomas, 1 amartoma, 2 hepatic cysts; 2 focal nodular hyperplasias, 3 regenerative macronodules, 3 AV-shunts, 3 hepatic sparing areas and 1 focal steatosis) and 19 malignant one (17 HCCs, 1 cholangioca, 1 metastasis); statistical evaluation for better diagnosis with X2 test (SPSS vers. 26); we used LI-RADS classification for evaluating sensitivity, specificity PPV, NPV and diagnostic accuracy of C- and HFR-CEUS. Corrispective AU-ROC were calculated.

RESULTS

C-CEUS and HiFR-CEUS reached the same diagnosis in 29 nodules (13 nodules > 1 < 1.5 cm; 16 nodules > 1.5 < 2 cm); HiFR-CEUS reached a correct diagnosis in 32 nodules where C-CEUS was not diagnostic (6 nodules < 1 cm; 17 nodules > 1 < 1.5 cm; 9 nodules > 1.5 < 2 cm); C-CEUS was better in 2 nodules (1 < 1 cm and 1 > 1 < 1.5 cm). Some patient's (sex, BMI, age) and nodule's characteristics (liver segment, type of diagnosis, nodule's dimensions (p = 0.65)) were not correlated with better diagnosis (p ns); only better visualization (p 0.004) was correlated; C-CEUS obtained the following LI-RADS: type-1: 18 Nodules, type-2: 21; type-3: 7, type-4: 7; type-5: 8; type-M: 2; HiFR-CEUS: type-1: 38 Nodules, type-2: 2; type-3:4, type-4: 2; type-5: 15; type-M: 2; In comparison with final diagnosis: C-CEUS: TP: 17; TN: 39; FP: 5; FN:2; HIFR-CEUS: TP: 18; TN: 41; FP: 3; FN:1; C-CEUS: sens: 89.5%; Spec: 88.6%, PPV: 77.3%; NPV: 95.1%; Diagn Acc: 88.6% (AU-ROC: 0.994 ± SEAUC: 0.127; CI: 0.969-1.019); HiHFR CEUS: sens: 94.7%; Spec: 93.2%, PPV: 85.7%; NPV: 97.6%; Diagn Acc: 93.2% (AU-ROC: 0.9958 ± SEAUC: 0.106; CI: 0.975-1.017) FLL vascularization in the arterial phase was more visible with HiFR-CEUS than with C-CEUS, capturing the perfusion details in the arterial phase due to a better temporal resolution. With a better temporal resolution, the late phase could be evaluated longer with HiFR-CEUS (4 min C-CEUS vs. 5 min HiFR-CEUS).

CONCLUSION

Both C-CEUS and HIFR-CEUS are good non invasive imaging system for the characterization of small lesions detected during follow up of cirrhotic patients. HiFR-CEUS allowed better FLL characterization in cirrhotic patients with better temporal and spatial resolution capturing the perfusion details that cannot be easily observed with C-CEUS.

Air- and water-stable and photocatalytically active germanium-based 2D perovskites by organic spacer engineering

There is increasing interest in the role of metal halide perovskites for heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report a Ge-based 2D perovskite material that shows intrinsic water stability realized through organic cation engineering. Incorporating 4-phenylbenzilammonium (PhBz) we demonstrate, by means of extended experimental and computational results, that PhBz₂GeBr₄ and PhBz₂GeI₄ can achieve relevant air and water stability. The creation of composites embedding graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) allows a proof of concept for light-induced hydrogen evolution in an aqueous environment by 2D Ge-based perovskites thanks to the effective charge transfer at the heterojunction between the two semiconductors.

Increased CO2 Affinity and Adsorption Selectivity in MOF-801 Fluorinated Analogues

The novel Zr^IV-based perfluorinated metal-organic framework (PF-MOF) [Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(TFS)₆] (ZrTFS) was prepared under solvent-free conditions using the commercially available tetrafluorosuccinic acid (H₂TFS) as a bridging ditopic linker. Since H₂TFS can be seen as the fully aliphatic and perfluorinated C₄ analogue of fumaric acid, ZrTFS was found to be isoreticular to zirconium fumarate (MOF-801). The structure of ZrTFS was solved and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data. Despite this analogy, the gas adsorption capacity of ZrTFS is much lower than that of MOF-801; in the former, the presence of bulky fluorine atoms causes a considerable window size reduction. To have PF-MOFs with more accessible porosity, postsynthetic exchange (PSE) reactions on (defective) MOF-801 suspended in H₂TFS aqueous solutions were carried out. Despite the different H₂TFS concentrations used in the PSE process, the exchanges yielded two mixed-linker materials of similar minimal formulae [Zr₆O₄(μ₃-OH)₄(μ₁-OH)_2.08(H₂O)_2.08(FUM)_4.04(HTFS)_1.84] (PF-MOF1) and [Zr₆O₄(μ₃-OH)₄(μ₁-OH)_1.83(H₂O)_1.83(FUM)_4.04(HTFS)_2.09] (PF-MOF2) (FUM^2- = fumarate), where the perfluorinated linker was found to fully replace the capping acetate in the defective sites of pristine MOF-801. CO₂ and N₂ adsorption isotherms collected on all samples reveal that both CO₂ thermodynamic affinity (isosteric heat of adsorption at zero coverage, Q_st) and CO₂/N₂ adsorption selectivity increase with the amount of incorporated TFS^2-, reaching the maximum values of 30 kJ mol^-1 and 41 (IAST), respectively, in PF-MOF2. This confirms the beneficial effect coming from the introduction of fluorinated linkers in MOFs on their CO₂ adsorption ability. Finally, solid-state density functional theory calculations were carried out to cast light on the structural features and on the thermodynamics of CO₂ adsorption in MOF-801 and ZrTFS. Due to the difficulties in modeling a defective MOF, an intermediate structure containing both linkers in the framework was also designed. In this structure, the preferential CO₂ adsorption site is the tetrahedral pore in the "UiO-66-like" structure. The extra energy stabilization stems from a hydrogen bond interaction between CO₂ and a hydroxyl group on the inorganic cluster.

Stability of Tin- versus Lead-Halide Perovskites: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Perovskite/Water Interfaces

Tin-halide perovskites (THPs) have emerged as promising lead-free perovskites for photovoltaics and photocatalysis applications but still fall short in terms of stability and efficiency with respect to their lead-based counterpart. A detailed understanding of the degradation mechanism of THPs in a water environment is missing. This Letter presents ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to unravel atomistic details of THP/water interfaces comparing methylammonium tin iodide, MASnI₃, with the lead-based MAPbI₃. Our results reveal facile solvation of surface tin-iodine bonds in MASnI₃, while MAPbI₃ remains more robust to degradation despite a larger amount of adsorbed water molecules. Additional AIMD simulations on dimethylammonium tin bromide, DMASnBr₃, investigate the origins of their unprecedented water stability. Our results indicate the presence of amorphous surface layers of hydrated zero-dimensional SnBr₃ complexes which may protect the inner structure from degradation and explain their success as photocatalysts. We believe that the atomistic details of the mechanisms affecting THP (in-)stability may inspire new strategies to stabilize THPs.

First-Principles Molecular Dynamics in Metal-Halide Perovskites: Contrasting Generalized Gradient Approximation and Hybrid Functionals

First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) represents a valuable tool to probe dynamical properties of metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) which are key to their success in optoelectronic devices. Most FPMD studies rely on generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals for computational efficiency matters, while hybrid functionals, although computationally demanding, are usually needed to accurately describe structural and electronic properties of MHPs. This Letter reports FPMD simulations on CsPbI₃ based on the hybrid PBE0 functional. Our results demonstrate that PBE0 leads to lattice parameters and phonon modes in excellent agreement with experimental data, while GGA results overestimate the lattice parameter and the electronic band gap and underestimate the phonon energies. Our FPMD results also shed light on anharmonic effects and double-well instabilities in the octahedral tilting, highlighting a lowered free energy barrier for PBE0 and farther separated potential wells. Our results suggest that hybrid functionals are required to accurately describe crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and anharmonicity in MHPs.

Designing New Indene-Fullerene Derivatives as Electron-Transporting Materials for Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

The synthesis and characterization of a family of indene-C₆₀ adducts obtained via Diels-Alder cycloaddition [4 + 2] are reported. The new C₆₀ derivatives include indenes with a variety of functional groups. These adducts show lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels to be at the right position to consider these compounds as electron-transporting materials for planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells. Selected derivatives were applied into inverted (p-i-n configuration) perovskite device architectures, fabricated on flexible polymer substrates, with large active areas (1 cm²). The highest power conversion efficiency, reaching 13.61%, was obtained for the 6'-acetamido-1',4'-dihydro-naphtho[2',3':1,2][5,6]fullerene-C₆₀ (NHAc-ICMA). Spectroscopic characterization was applied to visualize possible passivation effects of the perovskite's surface induced by these adducts.

Real Space-Real Time Evolution of Excitonic States Based on the Bethe-Salpeter Equation Method

We introduce a method for constructing localized excitations and simulating the real time dynamics of excitons at the Many-Body Perturbation Theory Bethe-Salpeter Equation level. We track, on the femto-seconds scale, electron injection from a photoexcited dye into a semiconducting slab. From the time-dependent many-body wave function we compute the spatial evolution of the electron and of the hole; full electron injection is attained within 5 fs. Time-resolved analysis of the electron density and electron-hole interaction energy hints at a two-step charge transfer mechanism through an intermediary partially injected state. We adopt the Von-Neumann entropy for analyzing how the electron and hole entangle. We find that the excitation of the dye-semiconductor model may be represented by a four-level system and register a decrease in entanglement upon electron injection. At full injection, the electron and the hole exhibit only a small degree of entanglement indicative of pure electron and hole states.

Energy vs Charge Transfer in Manganese-Doped Lead Halide Perovskites

Mn-doped lead halide perovskites exhibit long-lived dopant luminescence and enhanced host excitonic quantum yield. The contention between energy and charge transfer in sensitizing dopant luminescence in Mn-doped perovskites is investigated by state-of-the-art DFT calculations on APbX₃ perovskites (X = Cl, Br, and I). We quantitatively simulate the electronic structure of Mn-doped perovskites in various charge and spin states, providing a structural/mechanistic analysis of Mn sensitization as a function of the perovskite composition. Our analysis supports both energy- and charge-transfer mechanisms, with the latter probably preferred in Mn:CsPbCl₃ due to small energy barriers and avoidance of spin and orbital restrictions. An essential factor determining the dopant luminescence quantum yield in the case of charge transfer is the energetics of intermediate oxidized species, while bandgap resonance can well explain energy transfer. Both aspects are mediated by perovskite host band edge energetics, which is tuned in turn by the nature of the halide X.

Cation Engineering for Resonant Energy Level Alignment in Two-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites

Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites are being intensively investigated because of their higher stability and chemical versatility in comparison to their 3D counterparts. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of the electronic and charge transport properties, limited by the reduced perovskite dimensionality. Cation engineering can be envisaged as a solution to tune and possibly further improve the material's optoelectronic properties. In this work, we screen and design new electronically active A-site cations that can promote charge transport across the inorganic layers. We show that hybridization of the valence band electronic states of the perovskite inorganic sublattice and the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the A-site organic cations can be tuned to exhibit a variety of optoelectronic properties. A significant interplay of A-cation size, electronic structure, and steric constraints is revealed, suggesting intriguing means of further tuning the 2D perovskite electronic structure toward achieving stable and efficient solar cell devices.

Ligand-engineered bandgap stability in mixed-halide perovskite LEDs

Lead halide perovskites are promising semiconductors for light-emitting applications because they exhibit bright, bandgap-tunable luminescence with high colour purity^1,2. Photoluminescence quantum yields close to unity have been achieved for perovskite nanocrystals across a broad range of emission colours, and light-emitting diodes with external quantum efficiencies exceeding 20 per cent-approaching those of commercial organic light-emitting diodes-have been demonstrated in both the infrared and the green emission channels^1,3,4. However, owing to the formation of lower-bandgap iodide-rich domains, efficient and colour-stable red electroluminescence from mixed-halide perovskites has not yet been realized^5,6. Here we report the treatment of mixed-halide perovskite nanocrystals with multidentate ligands to suppress halide segregation under electroluminescent operation. We demonstrate colour-stable, red emission centred at 620 nanometres, with an electroluminescence external quantum efficiency of 20.3 per cent. We show that a key function of the ligand treatment is to 'clean' the nanocrystal surface through the removal of lead atoms. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the binding between the ligands and the nanocrystal surface suppresses the formation of iodine Frenkel defects, which in turn inhibits halide segregation. Our work exemplifies how the functionality of metal halide perovskites is extremely sensitive to the nature of the (nano)crystalline surface and presents a route through which to control the formation and migration of surface defects. This is critical to achieve bandgap stability for light emission and could also have a broader impact on other optoelectronic applications-such as photovoltaics-for which bandgap stability is required.

Water-Stable DMASnBr3 Lead-Free Perovskite for Effective Solar-Driven Photocatalysis

Water-stable metal halide perovskites could foster tremendous progresses in several research fields where their superior optical properties can make differences. In this work we report clear evidence of water stability in a lead-free metal halide perovskite, namely DMASnBr₃ , obtained by means of diffraction, optical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Such unprecedented water-stability has been applied to promote photocatalysis in aqueous medium, in particular by devising a novel composite material by coupling DMASnBr₃ to g-C₃ N₄ , taking advantage from the combination of their optimal photophysical properties. The prepared composites provide an impressive hydrogen evolution rate >1700 μmol g^-1  h^-1 generated by the synergistic activity of the two composite costituents. DFT calculations provide insight into this enhancement deriving it from the favorable alignment of interfacial energy levels of DMASnBr₃ and g-C₃ N₄ . The demonstration of an efficient photocatalytic activity for a composite based on lead-free metal halide perovskite in water paves the way to a new class of light-driven catalysts working in aqueous environments.

Combined Computational and Experimental Investigation on the Nature of Hydrated Iodoplumbate Complexes: Insights into the Dual Role of Water in Perovskite Precursor Solutions

Water is generally considered an enemy of metal halide perovskites, being responsible for their rapid degradation and, consequently, undermining the long-term stability of perovskite-based solar cells. However, beneficial effects of liquid water have been surprisingly observed, and synthetic routes including water treatments have shown to improve the quality of perovskite films. This suggests that the interactions of water with perovskites and their precursors are far from being completely understood, as water appears to play a puzzling dual role in perovskite precursor solutions. In this context, studying the basic interactions between perovskite precursors in the aqueous environment can provide a deeper comprehension of this conundrum. In this context, it is fundamental to understand how water impacts the chemistry of iodoplumbate perovskite precursor species, PbI_x^2–x. Here, we investigate the chemistry of these complexes using a combined experimental and theoretical strategy to unveil their peculiar structural and optical properties and eventually to assign the species present in the solution. Our study indicates that iodide-rich iodoplumbates, which are generally key to the formation of lead halide perovskites, are not easily formed in aqueous solutions because of the competition between iodide and solvent molecules in coordinating Pb²⁺ ions, explaining the difficulty of depositing lead iodide perovskites from aqueous solutions. We postulate that the beneficial effect of water when used as an additive is then motivated by its behavior being similar to high coordinative polar aprotic solvents usually employed as additives in one-step perovskite depositions.

Structural and Optical Properties of Solvated PbI2 in γ-Butyrolactone: Insight into the Solution Chemistry of Lead Halide Perovskite Precursors

We employ a fine-tuned theoretical framework, combining ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), density functional theory (DFT), and time-dependent (TD) DFT methods, to investigate the interactions and optical properties of the iodoplumbates within the low coordinative γ-butyrolactone (GBL) solvent environment, widely employed in the perovskite synthesis. We uncover the extent of GBL coordination to PbI2 investigating its relation to the solvated PbI2 optical properties. The employed approach has been further validated by comparison with the experimental UV-vis absorption spectrum of PbI2 in GBL solvent. A comparison with other solvents, commonly employed in the perovskite synthesis, such as N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is also reported. The methodology developed in this work can be reasonably extended to the investigation of similar systems.

Electronic Properties and Carrier Trapping in Bi and Mn Co-doped CsPbCl3 Perovskite

Metal halide perovskites exhibit impressive optoelectronic properties with applications in solar cells and light-emitting diodes. Co-doping the high-band gap CsPbCl3 perovskite with Bi and Mn enhances both material stability and luminescence, providing emission on a wide spectral range. To discuss the role of Bi3+ and Mn2+ dopants in tuning the CsPbCl3 perovskite energy levels and their involvement in carrier trapping, we report state-of-the-art hybrid density functional theory calculations, including spin-orbit coupling. We show that co-doping the perovskite with Bi and Mn delivers essentially the sum of the electronic properties of the single dopants, with no significant interaction or the preferential mutual location of them. Furthermore, we identify the structural features and energetics of transitions of electrons trapped at Bi and holes trapped at Mn dopant ions, respectively, and discuss their possible role in determining the optical properties of the co-doped perovskite.

Stabilizing halide perovskite surfaces for solar cell operation with wide-bandgap lead oxysalts

We show that converting the surfaces of lead halide perovskite to water-insoluble lead (II) oxysalt through reaction with sulfate or phosphate ions can effectively stabilize the perovskite surface and bulk material. These capping lead oxysalt thin layers enhance the water resistance of the perovskite films by forming strong chemical bonds. The wide-bandgap lead oxysalt layers also reduce the defect density on the perovskite surfaces by passivating undercoordinated surface lead centers, which are defect-nucleating sites. Formation of the lead oxysalt layer increases the carrier recombination lifetime and boosts the efficiency of the solar cells to 21.1%. Encapsulated devices stabilized by the lead oxysalt layers maintain 96.8% of their initial efficiency after operation at maximum power point under simulated air mass (AM) 1.5 G irradiation for 1200 hours at 65°C.

Transition Dipole Moments of n = 1, 2, and 3 Perovskite Quantum Wells from the Optical Stark Effect and Many-Body Perturbation Theory

Metal halide perovskite quantum wells (PQWs) are quantum and dielectrically confined materials exhibiting strongly bound excitons. The exciton transition dipole moment dictates absorption strength and influences interwell coupling in dipole-mediated energy transfer, a process that influences the performance of PQW optoelectronic devices. Here we use transient reflectance spectroscopy with circularly polarized laser pulses to investigate the optical Stark effect in dimensionally pure single crystals of n = 1, 2, and 3 Ruddlesden-Popper PQWs. From these measurements, we extract in-plane transition dipole moments of 11.1 (±0.4), 9.6 (±0.6) and 13.0 (±0.8) D for n = 1, 2 and 3, respectively. We corroborate our experimental results with density functional and many-body perturbation theory calculations, finding that the nature of band edge orbitals and exciton wave function delocalization depends on the PQW "odd-even" symmetry. This accounts for the nonmonotonic relationship between transition dipole moment and PQW dimensionality in the n = 1-3 range.

The Doping Mechanism of Halide Perovskite Unveiled by Alkaline Earth Metals

Halide perovskites are a strong candidate for the next generation of photovoltaics. Chemical doping of halide perovskites is an established strategy to prepare the highest efficiency and most stable perovskite-based solar cells. In this study, we unveil the doping mechanism of halide perovskites using a series of alkaline earth metals. We find that low doping levels enable the incorporation of the dopant within the perovskite lattice, whereas high doping concentrations induce surface segregation. The threshold from low to high doping regime correlates to the size of the doping element. We show that the low doping regime results in a more n-type material, while the high doping regime induces a less n-type doping character. Our work provides a comprehensive picture of the unique doping mechanism of halide perovskites, which differs from classical semiconductors. We proved the effectiveness of the low doping regime for the first time, demonstrating highly efficient methylammonium lead iodide based solar cells in both n-i-p and p-i-n architectures.

Band Gap Engineering in MASnBr3 and CsSnBr3 Perovskites: Mechanistic Insights through the Application of Pressure

Here we report on the first structural and optical high-pressure investigation of MASnBr₃ (MA = [CH₃NH₃]⁺) and CsSnBr₃ halide perovskites. A massive red shift of 0.4 eV for MASnBr₃ and 0.2 eV for CsSnBr₃ is observed within 1.3 to 1.5 GPa from absorption spectroscopy, followed by a huge blue shift of 0.3 and 0.5 eV, respectively. Synchrotron powder diffraction allowed us to correlate the upturn in the optical properties trend (onset of blue shift) with structural phase transitions from cubic to orthorhombic in MASnBr₃ and from tetragonal to monoclinic for CsSnBr₃. Density functional theory calculations indicate a different underlying mechanism affecting the band gap evolution with pressure, a key role of metal-halide bond lengths for CsSnBr₃ and cation orientation for MASnBr₃, thus showing the impact of a different A-cation on the pressure response. Finally, the investigated phases, differently from the analogous Pb-based counterparts, are robust against amorphization showing defined diffraction up to the maximum pressure used in the experiments.

Solvent-Free Synthetic Route for Cerium(IV) Metal-Organic Frameworks with UiO-66 Architecture and Their Photocatalytic Applications

A near solvent-free synthetic route for Ce-UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is presented. The MOFs are obtained by energetically grinding the reagents, cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and the carboxylic linkers, in a mortar for a few minutes with the addition of a small amount of acetic acid (AcOH) as a modulator (8.75 equiv, 0.5 mL). The slurry is then transferred into a 2 mL vial and heated at 120 °C for 1 day. The MOFs have been characterized for their composition, crystallinity, and porosity and employed as heterogeneous catalysts for the photo-oxidation reaction of substituted benzylic alcohols to benzaldaldehydes under near-ultraviolet light irradiation. The catalytic performances, such as selectivity, conversion, and kinetics, exceed those of similar systems studied by chemical oxidation using similar Ce-MOFs as a catalyst. Moreover, the MOFs were found to be reusable up to three cycles without loss of activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to fully describe the electronic structure of the best performing MOFs and to provide useful information on the catalytic activity experimentally observed.

Electronic structure of MAPbI3 and MAPbCl3: importance of band alignment

Since their first appearance, organic-inorganic perovskite absorbers have been capturing the attention of the scientific community. While high efficiency devices highlight the importance of band level alignment, very little is known on the origin of the strong n-doping character observed in the perovskite. Here, by means of a highly accurate photoemission study, we shed light on the energy alignment in perovskite-based devices. Our results suggest that the interaction with the substrate may be the driver for the observed doping in the perovskite samples.

Charge Carriers Are Not Affected by the Relatively Slow-Rotating Methylammonium Cations in Lead Halide Perovskite Thin Films

Recently, several studies have investigated dielectric properties as a possible origin of the exceptional optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs). In this study we investigated the temperature-dependent dielectric behavior of different MHP films at different frequencies. In the gigahertz regime, dielectric losses in methylammonium-based samples are dominated by the rotational dynamics of the organic cation. Upon increasing the temperature from 160 to 300 K, the rotational relaxation time, τ, decreases from 400 (200) to 6 (1) ps for MAPb-I₃ (-Br₃). By contrast, we found negligible temperature-dependent variations in τ for a mixed cation/mixed halide FA_0.85MA_0.15Pb(I_0.85Br_0.15)₃. From temperature-dependent time-resolved microwave conductance measurements we conclude that the dipolar reorientation of the MA cation does not affect charge carrier mobility and lifetime in MHPs. Therefore, charge carriers do not feel the relatively slow-moving MA cations, despite their great impact on the dielectric constants.

An Oxa[5]helicene-Based Racemic Semiconducting Glassy Film for Photothermally Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Attaining the durability of high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs) operated under concomitant light and thermal stresses is still a serious concern before large-scale application. It is crucial to maintain the phase stability of the organic hole-transporting layer for thermostable PSCs across a range of temperatures sampled during device operation. To address this issue, we propose a racemic semiconducting glassy film with remarkable morphological stability, exemplified here by a low-molecular symmetry oxa[5]helicene-centered organic semiconductor (O5H-OMeDPA). The helical configuration of O5H-OMeDPA confers the trait of multiple-dimension charge transfer to the solid, resulting in high hole mobility of 6.7 × 10^-4 cm² V^-1 s^-1 of a solution-processed glassy film. O5H-OMeDPA is combined with a triple-cation dual-halide lead perovskite to fabricate PSCs with power conversion efficiencies of 21.03%, outperforming the control cells with spiro-OMeTAD (20.44%). Moreover, the cells using O5H-OMeDPA exhibit good long-term stability during full-sunlight soaking at 60°C.

Ionotronic Halide Perovskite Drift-Diffusive Synapses for Low-Power Neuromorphic Computation

Emulation of brain-like signal processing is the foundation for development of efficient learning circuitry, but few devices offer the tunable conductance range necessary for mimicking spatiotemporal plasticity in biological synapses. An ionic semiconductor which couples electronic transitions with drift-diffusive ionic kinetics would enable energy-efficient analog-like switching of metastable conductance states. Here, ionic-electronic coupling in halide perovskite semiconductors is utilized to create memristive synapses with a dynamic continuous transition of conductance states. Coexistence of carrier injection barriers and ion migration in the perovskite films defines the degree of synaptic plasticity, more notable for the larger organic ammonium and formamidinium cations than the inorganic cesium counterpart. Optimized pulsing schemes facilitates a balanced interplay of short- and long-term plasticity rules like paired-pulse facilitation and spike-time-dependent plasticity, cardinal for learning and computing. Trained as a memory array, halide perovskite synapses demonstrate reconfigurability, learning, forgetting, and fault tolerance analogous to the human brain. Network-level simulations of unsupervised learning of handwritten digit images utilizing experimentally derived device parameters, validates the utility of these memristors for energy-efficient neuromorphic computation, paving way for novel ionotronic neuromorphic architectures with halide perovskites as the active material.

Large electrostrictive response in lead halide perovskites

Lead halide perovskites have demonstrated outstanding performance in photovoltaics, photodetectors, radiation detectors and light-emitting diodes. However, the electromechanical properties, which are the main application of inorganic perovskites, have rarely been explored for lead halide perovskites. Here, we report the discovery of a large electrostrictive response in methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI₃) single crystals. Under an electric field of 3.7 V µm^-1, MAPbI₃ shows a large compressive strain of 1%, corresponding to a mechanical energy density of 0.74 J cm^-3, comparable to that of human muscles. The influences of piezoelectricity, thermal expansion, intrinsic electrostrictive effect, Maxwell stress, ferroelectricity, local polar fluctuation and methylammonium cation ordering on this electromechanical response are excluded. We speculate, using density functional theory, that electrostriction of MAPbI₃ probably originates from lattice deformation due to formation of additional defects under applied bias. The discovery of large electrostriction in lead iodide perovskites may lead to new potential applications in actuators, sonar and micro-electromechanical systems and aid the understanding of other field-dependent material properties.

Infrared Dielectric Screening Determines the Low Exciton Binding Energy of Metal-Halide Perovskites

The performance of lead-halide perovskites in optoelectronic devices is due to a unique combination of factors, including highly efficient generation, transport, and collection of photogenerated charge carriers. The mechanism behind efficient charge generation in lead-halide perovskites is still largely unknown. Here, we investigate the factors that influence the exciton binding energy (E_b) in a series of metal-halide perovskites using accurate first-principles calculations based on solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation, coupled to ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We find that E_b is strongly modulated by screening from low-energy phonons, which account for a factor ∼2 E_b reduction, while dynamic disorder and rotational motion of the organic cations play a minor role. We calculate E_b = 15 meV for MAPbI₃, in excellent agreement with recent experimental estimates. We then explore how different material combinations (e.g., replacing Pb → Pb:Sn→ Sn; and MA → FA → Cs) may lead to different E_b values and highlight the mechanisms underlying E_b tuning.

Globularity-Selected Large Molecules for a New Generation of Multication Perovskites

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) use perovskites with an APbX₃ structure, where A is a monovalent cation and X is a halide such as Cl, Br, and/or I. Currently, the cations for high-efficiency PSCs are Rb, Cs, methylammonium (MA), and/or formamidinium (FA). Molecules larger than FA, such as ethylammonium (EA), guanidinium (GA), and imidazolium (IA), are usually incompatible with photoactive "black"-phase perovskites. Here, novel molecular descriptors for larger molecular cations are introduced using a "globularity factor", i.e., the discrepancy of the molecular shape and an ideal sphere. These cationic radii differ significantly from previous reports, showing that especially ethylammonium (EA) is only slightly larger than FA. This makes EA a suitable candidate for multication 3D perovskites that have potential for unexpected and beneficial properties (suppressing halide segregation, stability). This approach is tested experimentally showing that surprisingly large quantities of EA get incorporated, in contrast to most previous reports where only small quantities of larger molecular cations can be tolerated as "additives". MA/EA perovskites are characterized experimentally with a band gap ranging from 1.59 to 2.78 eV, demonstrating some of the most blue-shifted PSCs reported to date. Furthermore, one of the compositions, MA_0.5 EA_0.5 PbBr₃ , shows an open circuit voltage of 1.58 V, which is the highest to date with a conventional PSC architecture.

Large polarons in lead halide perovskites

Lead halide perovskites show marked defect tolerance responsible for their excellent optoelectronic properties. These properties might be explained by the formation of large polarons, but how they are formed and whether organic cations are essential remain open questions. We provide a direct time domain view of large polaron formation in single-crystal lead bromide perovskites CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ and CsPbBr₃. We found that large polaron forms predominantly from the deformation of the PbBr₃^- frameworks, irrespective of the cation type. The difference lies in the polaron formation time, which, in CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (0.3 ps), is less than half of that in CsPbBr₃ (0.7 ps). First-principles calculations confirm large polaron formation, identify the Pb-Br-Pb deformation modes as responsible, and explain quantitatively the rate difference between CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ and CsPbBr₃. The findings reveal the general advantage of the soft [PbX₃]^- sublattice in charge carrier protection and suggest that there is likely no mechanistic limitations in using all-inorganic or mixed-cation lead halide perovskites to overcome instability problems and to tune the balance between charge carrier protection and mobility.

One-Year stable perovskite solar cells by 2D/3D interface engineering

Despite the impressive photovoltaic performances with power conversion efficiency beyond 22%, perovskite solar cells are poorly stable under operation, failing by far the market requirements. Various technological approaches have been proposed to overcome the instability problem, which, while delivering appreciable incremental improvements, are still far from a market-proof solution. Here we show one-year stable perovskite devices by engineering an ultra-stable 2D/3D (HOOC(CH₂)₄NH₃)₂PbI₄/CH₃NH₃PbI₃ perovskite junction. The 2D/3D forms an exceptional gradually-organized multi-dimensional interface that yields up to 12.9% efficiency in a carbon-based architecture, and 14.6% in standard mesoporous solar cells. To demonstrate the up-scale potential of our technology, we fabricate 10 × 10 cm² solar modules by a fully printable industrial-scale process, delivering 11.2% efficiency stable for >10,000 h with zero loss in performances measured under controlled standard conditions. This innovative stable and low-cost architecture will enable the timely commercialization of perovskite solar cells.

Up-scaling represents a key challenge for photovoltaics based on metal halide perovskites. Using a composite of 2D and 3D perovskites in combination with a printable carbon black/graphite counter electrode; Grancini et al., report 11.2% efficient modules stable over 10,000 hours.

Rashba Band Splitting in Organohalide Lead Perovskites: Bulk and Surface Effects

A Rashba/Dresselhaus band splitting has been recently measured in organohalide perovskites and invoked in various experiments as a possible cause for the reduced electron-hole recombination rates observed in this class of materials. In this Perspective, we discuss the interplay of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in defining such an effect in realistic methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) models. We distinguish between bulk and surface effects and find that, while a spatially local (in time and space) effect may be at work in the bulk, a "static" band-splitting effect is found at surfaces due to structural distortion. The proposed surface effect is consistent with the low surface recombination reported for MAPbI₃ single crystals and might contribute to the success of organohalide perovskites.

Nearly Monodisperse Insulator Cs4PbX6 (X = Cl, Br, I) Nanocrystals, Their Mixed Halide Compositions, and Their Transformation into CsPbX3 Nanocrystals

We have developed a colloidal synthesis of nearly monodisperse nanocrystals of pure Cs₄PbX₆ (X = Cl, Br, I) and their mixed halide compositions with sizes ranging from 9 to 37 nm. The optical absorption spectra of these nanocrystals display a sharp, high energy peak due to transitions between states localized in individual PbX₆^4- octahedra. These spectral features are insensitive to the size of the particles and in agreement with the features of the corresponding bulk materials. Samples with mixed halide composition exhibit absorption bands that are intermediate in spectral position between those of the pure halide compounds. Furthermore, the absorption bands of intermediate compositions broaden due to the different possible combinations of halide coordination around the Pb²⁺ ions. Both observations are supportive of the fact that the [PbX₆]^4- octahedra are electronically decoupled in these systems. Because of the large band gap of Cs₄PbX₆ (>3.2 eV), no excitonic emission in the visible range was observed. The Cs₄PbBr₆ nanocrystals can be converted into green fluorescent CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals by their reaction with an excess of PbBr₂ with preservation of size and size distributions. The insertion of PbX₂ into Cs₄PbX₆ provides a means of accessing CsPbX₃ nanocrystals in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and compositions, an important aspect for the development of precisely tuned perovskite nanocrystal inks.

Chlorine Incorporation in the CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite: Small Concentration, Big Effect

The role of chlorine doping in CH₃NH₃PbI₃ represents an important open issue in the use of hybrid perovskites for photovoltaic applications. In particular, even if a positive role of chlorine doping on perovskite film formation and on material morphology has been demonstrated, an inherent positive effect on the electronic and photovoltaic properties cannot be excluded. Here we carried out periodic density functional theory and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations, going down to ∼1% doping, to investigate the effect of chlorine on CH₃NH₃PbI₃. We found that such a small doping has important effects on the dynamics of the crystalline structure, both with respect to the inorganic framework and with respect to the cation libration motion. Together, we observe a dynamic spatial localization of the valence and conduction states in separated spatial material regions, which takes place in the 10^-1 ps time scale and which could be the key to ease of exciton dissociation and, likely, to small charge recombination in hybrid perovskites. Moreover, such localization is enhanced by chlorine doping, demonstrating an inherent positive role of chlorine doping on the electronic properties of this class of materials.

First Principles Modeling of Perovskite Solar Cells: Interplay of Structural, Electronic and Dynamical Effects

The impressive surge of perovskite solar cells has been accompanied by a comparable effort to unveil the basics properties of this class of materials. Theoretical and computational modeling is playing a major role in providing scientists an in depth atomistic view of the intimate perovskite properties contributing to the success of this class of materials. In this chapter we discuss recent advances in our understanding of organohalide perovskites based on first principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. Emphasis is placed on the interplay of electronic and structural features and on the important role of the organic cation and of its dynamics in dictating the peculiar material’s properties. The role of chlorine doping in methylammonium lead iodide and of interfaces with TiO2 in solar cells models are finally described.

Dynamical Origin of the Rashba Effect in Organohalide Lead Perovskites: A Key to Suppressed Carrier Recombination in Perovskite Solar Cells?

The presence of a Rashba band-splitting mechanism mediated by spin-orbit coupling and breaking of inversion symmetry has been suggested as a possible cause for the reduced recombination rates observed in organohalide perovskites. Here, we investigate the interplay of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in defining the Rashba splitting in realistic MAPbI3 models. Our simulations disclose a "dynamical Rashba effect", allowing for a quantification of its magnitude under thermal conditions. We find that even in globally centrosymmetric structures the dynamics of the coupled inorganic-organic degrees of freedom give rise to a spatially local Rashba effect which fluctuates on the subpicosecond time scale typical of the methylammonium cation dynamics. This effect is progressively quenched in globally centrosymmetric structures, likely representing the MAPbI3 perovskite at room temperature, on increasing the probed spatial scale up to 32 MAPbI3 units (∼3 nm size) because of the incoherent nuclear thermal motion mediated by the disorder of the organic cations.

Solution Synthesis Approach to Colloidal Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanoplatelets with Monolayer-Level Thickness Control

We report a colloidal synthesis approach to CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs). The nucleation and growth of the platelets, which takes place at room temperature, is triggered by the injection of acetone in a mixture of precursors that would remain unreactive otherwise. The low growth temperature enables the control of the plate thickness, which can be precisely tuned from 3 to 5 monolayers. The strong two-dimensional confinement of the carriers at such small vertical sizes is responsible for a narrow PL, strong excitonic absorption, and a blue shift of the optical band gap by more than 0.47 eV compared to that of bulk CsPbBr3. We also show that the composition of the NPLs can be varied all the way to CsPbBr3 or CsPbI3 by anion exchange, with preservation of the size and shape of the starting particles. The blue fluorescent CsPbCl3 NPLs represent a new member of the scarcely populated group of blue-emitting colloidal nanocrystals. The exciton dynamics were found to be independent of the extent of 2D confinement in these platelets, and this was supported by band structure calculations.
