Optimization of Electrochemical Sensitivity in Anticancer Drug Quantification through ZnS@CNS Nanosheets: Synthesis via Accelerated Sonochemical Methodology

Zinc sulfide/graphitic Carbon Nitride binary nanosheets were synthesized by using a novel sonochemical pathway with high electrocatalytic ability. The as- obtained samples were characterized by various analytical methods such as Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to evaluate the properties of ZnS@CNS synthesized by this new route. Subsequently, the electrical and electrochemical performance of the proposed electrodes were characterized by using EIS and CV to establish an electroactive ability of the nanocomposites. The complete properties like structural and physical of ZnS@CNS were analyzed. As-prepared binary nanocomposite was applied towards the detection of anticancer drug (flutamide) by various electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and amperometry. The glassy carbon electrode modified with a ZnS@CNS composite demonstrates a remarkable electrocatalytic efficiency for detecting flutamide in a pH 7.0 (PBS). The composite modified electrode shows synergistic effect of ZnS and CNS catalyst. The electrochemical sensing performance of the linear range was improved significantly due to high electroactive sites and rapid electron transport pathways. Crucially, the electrochemical method was successfully demonstrated in biological fluids which reveals its potential real-time applicability in the analysis of drug.

Synthesis, Structure and (Photo)Catalytic Behavior of Ce-MOFs Containing Perfluoroalkylcarboxylate Linkers: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

Cerium-based Metal-Organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs) are attracting increasing interest due to their similar structural features to zirconium MOFs. The redox behavior of Ce(III/IV) adds a range of properties to the compounds. Recently, perfluorinated linkers have been used in the synthesis of MOFs to introduce new characteristic into the structure. We report the synthesis and structural characterization of Ce(IV)-based MOFs constructed using two perfluorinated alkyl linkers. Their structure, based on hexanuclear Ce6O4(OH)4 12+ clusters linked to each other by the dicarboxylate ions, has been solved ab-initio from X-ray powder diffraction data and refined by the Rietveld method. The crystallization kinetics and the MOF formation mechanism was also invesitigated by Synchrotron radiation with XAS spectroscopies (EXAFS and XANES). The MOFs present the same fcu cubic topology as observed in MOF-801 and UiO-66, and they showed good stability in water at different pH conditions. The electronic structure of these MOFs has been studied by DFT calculations in order to obtain insights into the density of states structure of the reported compounds, resulting in band gaps in the range of 2.8-3.1 eV. Their catalytic properties were tested both thermally and under visible light irradiation for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye.

CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite layers perform as an ultrasensitive electrochemical sensor for the detection of antioxidant rutin

The focus of this paper is laid on synthesizing layered compounds of CuMoO4 and Ti3C2Tx using a simple wet chemical etching method and sonochemical method to enable rapid detection of rutin using an electrochemical sensor. Following structural examinations using XRD, surface morphology analysis using SEM, and chemical composition state analysis using XPS, the obtained CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite electrocatalyst was confirmed and characterized. By employing cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, the electrochemical properties of rutin on a CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx modified electrode were examined, including its stability and response to variations in pH, loading, sweep rate, and interference. The CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx modified electrode demonstrates rapid rutin sensing under optimal conditions and offers a linear range of 1 µΜ to 15 µΜ, thereby improving the minimal detection limit (LOD) to 42.9 nM. According to electrochemical analysis, the CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx electrode also demonstrated cyclic stability and long-lasting anti-interference capabilities. The CuMoO4/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite demonstrated acceptable recoveries when used to sense RT in apple and grape samples. In comparison to other interfering sample analytes encountered in the current study, the developed sensor demonstrated high selectivity and anti-interference performance. As a result, our research to design of high-performance electrochemical sensors in the biomedical and therapeutic fields.

Hydrothermal Synthesis, Phase Analysis, and Magneto-Electronic Characterizations of Lead-Free Ferroelectric BM2+(Zn, Ca, Mg)T-BFO System

In this study, lead-free BiM2+(Zn, Ca, Mg)Ti-BiFeO3 ceramics are fabricated under eco-friendly hydrothermal reaction conditions at 250 °C. XRD patterns show that all the synthesized compounds exhibit a phase coexistence of monoclinic and tetragonal perovskite-type structures with a morphotropic phase boundary at x = 0.4, with minimum impurity. The calculated average crystallite/grain size of the samples was close to 50 nm at full width at half-maximum of the main peak. The corresponding bonds of the constituent elements were observed by FTIR analysis, which further supports the formation of the local structure. EDS analyses detect all of the elements, their quantities, and compositional homogeneity. SEM data show agglomerated and nearly spherical morphology with an average particle size of about 128 nm. All synthesized ceramic powders revealed thermal stability with trivial mass loss up to investigated high temperatures (1000 οC). The dielectric constant reached its maximum at 38.7 MHz and finally remained constant after 80 MHz for all nanoceramics. Because of the complementary impact of different compositions, the most effective piezoelectric characteristics of d33 = 136 pCN-1, Pr = 8.6 pCN-1 cm-2, and kp = 11% at 30 °C were attained at x = 0.4 content for 0.4BiCaTi-0.6BiFeO3 ceramic. The measured magnetic hysteresis data (M-H curve) showed a weak ferromagnetic nature with the highest moment of ∼0.23 emu/g for 0.4BiCaTi-0.6BiFeO3, and other samples exhibited negligible ferromagnetic to diamagnetic transition. The optical response study shows that the 0.4BiMgTi-0.6BiFeO3 sample yielded the maximal transmittance (50%), whereas the 0.4BiCaTi-0.6BiFeO3 compound exhibited the highest refractive index. The calculated large band gap shows a high insulating or dielectric nature. Our findings demonstrate that the BiM2+Ti-BiFeO3 system, which was fabricated using a low-temperature hydrothermal technique, is an excellent lead-free piezoelectric and multiferroic nanoceramic.

A universal ligand for lead coordination and tailored crystal growth in perovskite solar cells

Chemical environment and precursor-coordinating molecular interactions within a perovskite precursor solution can lead to important implications in structural defects and crystallization kinetics of a perovskite film. Thus, the opto-electronic quality of such films can be boosted by carefully fine-tuning the coordination chemistry of perovskite precursors via controllable introduction of additives, capable of forming intermediate complexes. In this work, we employed a new type of ligand, namely 1-phenylguanidine (PGua), which coordinates strongly with the PbI2 complexes in the perovskite precursor, forming new intermediate species. These strong interactions effectively retard the perovskite crystallization process and form homogeneous films with enlarged grain sizes and reduced density of defects. In combination with an interfacial treatment, the resulted champion devices exhibit a 24.6% efficiency with outstanding operational stability. Unprecedently, PGua can be applied in various PSCs with different perovskite compositions and even in both configurations: n-i-p and p-i-n, highlighting the universality of this ligand.

Investigation of gadolinium doped manganese nano spinel ferrites via magnetic hypothermia therapy effect towards MCF-7 breast cancer

Magnetic spinel ferrite nanoparticles (MSF-NPs) are potential candidates for biomedical applications, especially in cancer diagnosis and therapy due to their excellent physiochemical and magnetic properties. In the current study, MSF-NPs were fabricated by sol-gel auto combustion method. The crystal structure and surface morphology were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The magnetic properties were studied by VSM (vibrating sample magnetometer). As increasing Gd3+ concentration, the saturation magnetization values decreased from (17.8-2.3) emu/g, while the coercivity decreased from (499-133) Oe at room temperature. Finally, the fabricated MSF-NPs were tested against anticancer activity by MTT assay. The IC50 = 21.27 μg/mL value was observed, showing the strong antiproliferative activity of these nanoparticles. These results suggested that the obtained MSF-NPs would be useful for remote-controlled hyperthermia therapy for cancer treatment and MRI application due to their excellent magnetic properties. These distinct properties make MSF-NPs most suitable for cancer treatment and bright Contrast Agents (T1-MRI).

Optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of novel stable lead-free cubic double perovskites A2NaIO6 (A = Ca, Sr) for renewable energy applications

Over the past decade, perovskites have received considerable attention because of their record power conversion efficiency (25.7%) in solar cells. These materials have also received recent research interest in thermoelectrics, most likely due to their high carrier mobility, large power factor, and ultralow thermal conductivity. Therefore, in the present work, we have examined the optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of A2NaIO6 (A = Ca, Sr) double perovskites using first-principles calculations. Stability has been confirmed using reliable and accurate descriptors of formation energy and phonon calculations. The optimized lattice constant and volume show an increasing tendency with changing A site cation (Ca → Sr). The computed band structures depict the semiconducting nature with direct band gap values of 2.64 eV (Ca2NaIO6) and 2.48 eV (Sr2NaIO6). The absorption was found to start in the visible range where the reflectivity was less than 10%. Moreover, the high Seebeck coefficient, large electrical conductivity, and fairly low thermal conductivity result in ZT values of 0.724 for Ca2NaIO6 and 0.686 for Sr2NaIO6 at 1000 K. With their optimum band gap, excellent light absorption capacity, and high ZT values, A2NaIO6 emerge as promising candidates for optoelectronic and thermoelectric applications.

A promising sensing platform for explosive markers: Zeolite-like metal-organic framework based monolithic composite as a case study

Preconcentration for on-site detection or subsequent determination is a promising technique for selective sensing explosive markers at low concentrations. Here, we report divinylbenzene monolithic polymer in its blank form (neat-DVB) and as a composite incorporated with sodalite topology zeolite-like metal-organic frameworks (3-ZMOF@DVB), as a sensitive, selective, and cost-effective porous preconcentrator for aliphatic nitroalkanes in the vapor phase as explosive markers at infinite dilution. The developed materials were fabricated as 18 cm gas chromatography (GC) monolithic capillary columns to study their separation performance of nitroalkane mixture and the subsequent physicochemical study of adsorption using the inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique. A strong preconcentration effect was indicated by a specific retention volume adsorption/desorption ratio equal to 3 for nitromethane on the neat-DVB monolith host-guest interaction, and a 14% higher ratio was observed using the 3-ZMOF@DVB monolithic composite despite the low percentage of 0.7 wt.% of sod-ZMOF added. Furthermore, Incorporating ZMOF resulted in a higher percentage of micropores, increasing the degree of freedom more than bringing stronger adsorption and entropic-driven interaction more than enthalpic. The specific free energy of adsorption (ΔGS) values increased for polar probes and nitroalkanes, denoting that adding ZMOFs earned the DVB monolithic matrix a more specific character. Afterward, Lewis acid-base properties were calculated, estimating the electron acceptor (KA) and electron donor (KB) constants. The neat-DVB was found to have a Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 7.71, and the 3-ZMOF@DVB had a less Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 3.82. An increased electron-accepting nature can be directly related to incorporating sod-ZMOF into the DVB monolithic matrix. This work considers the initial step in presenting a portable explosives detector or preconcentrating explosive markers trace prior to more sophisticated analysis. Additionally, the IGC technique allows for understanding the factors that led to the superior adsorption of nitroalkanes for the developed materials.

Gadolinium doped zinc ferrite nanoarchitecture reinforced with a carbonaceous matrix: a novel hybrid material for next-generation flexible capacitors

Herein, nanostructured Gd-doped ZnFe2O4 (GZFO) has been synthesized via the sol-gel route and its CNT-reinforced nanohybrid was formed via an advanced ultrasonication method. The as-synthesized, hybrid electroactive materials have been supported on aluminum foil (AF) to design a flexible electrode for hybrid capacitor (HC) applications. Nanostructured material synthesis, Gd-doping, and CNT reinforcement approaches have been adopted to develop a rationally designed electrode with a high surface area, boosted electrical conductivity, and enhanced specific capacitance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic charge/discharge, and cyclic voltammetry processes have been used to measure the electrochemical performance of the prepared ferrite material-based working electrodes in a 3M KOH solution. A nanohybrid-based working electrode (GZFO/C@AF) shows superior rate capacitive and electrochemical aptitude (specific capacitance, rate performance, and cyclic activity) than its counterpart working electrodes (ZFO@AF and GZFO@AF). The hybrid working electrode (GZFO/C@AF electrode) shows a high specific capacitance of 887 F g-1 and good retention of 94.5% for 7000 cycles (at 15 Ag-1). The maximum energy density and power density values for the GZFO/C@AF electrode are 40.025 Wh Kg-1 and 279.78 W Kg-1, respectively. Based on the findings of the electrochemical experiments, GZFO/C@AF shows promise as an electrode material for hybrid capacitors that provide energy to wearable electronic devices.

Fabrication of photoluminescent electrically conductive and flame-retardant cellulose fabric incorporating polyaniline/strontium aluminate nanocomposite for a plethora of useful applications

The pad dry cure method was used to coat linen fibers with a smart nanocomposite that has photoluminescence, electrical conductivity, flame resistance, and hydrophobic properties. Environmentally benign silicone rubber (RTV) was utilized to encapsulate nanoparticles of rare-earth activated strontium aluminate nanoparticles (RESAN; 10-18 nm), polyaniline (PANi) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) into linen surface. The flame resistance of the treated linen fabrics was evaluated for their self-extinguishing capabilities. The flame-retardant qualities of linen were retained for 24 washings. Additionally, the superhydrophobicity of the treated linen has marked improved upon increasing the concentration of RESAN. The colorless luminous film deposited onto linen surface was excited at 365 nm and emitted a wavelength of 518 nm. In accordance with the results of CIE (Commission internationale de l'éclairage) Lab and luminescence analysis, the photoluminescent linen gave rise to diverse colors, including off-white in daylight, green beneath UV radiation and greenish-yellow in a darkened room. The treated linen displayed sustained phosphorescence, as evidenced by decay time spectroscopy. The bending length and air permeability of linen were evaluated for their mechanical and comfort assessment. Finally, the coated linens exhibited remarkable antibacterial activity along with strong UV protection.

Electrophoretic Fabrication of ZnO/CuO and ZnO/CuO/rGO Heterostructures-based Thin Films as Environmental Benign Flexible Electrode for Supercapacitor

Sustainable fabrication of flexible hybrid supercapacitor electrodes is extensively investigated during the current era to solve global energy problems. Herein, we used a cost-effective and efficient electrophoretic deposition (EPD) approach to fabricate a hybrid supercapacitor electrode. ZnO/CuO and ZnO/CuO/rGO heterostructure were prepared by sol-gel synthesis route and were electrophoretically deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate as a thin uniform layer using 1 V for 20 min at 50 mV/s. ZnO/CuO and ZnO/CuO/rGO heterostructure coated ITOs were then employed as the working electrode in a three-electrode setup for supercapacitor measurements. The fabricated electrodes have been investigated by Galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV) to study their charge storage properties. ZnO/CuO revealed a specific capacitance of 1945 F g^-1 at 2 mV/s and 999 F g^-1 at 5 A g^-1. However, an increased specific capacitance of 2305 F g^-1 was measured for ZnO/CuO/rGO heterostructure at 2 mV/s and 1235 F g^-1 at 5 A g^-1. The lower internal resistance was observed for ZnO/CuO/rGO heterostructure, indicating good conductivity of the electrode material. Thus, the overall results of the current study suggest that EPD-assisted ZnO/CuO/rGO heterostructure hybrid electrode possess a substantial potential for energy storage as a supercapacitor.

Hydrothermally synthesized Ag-TiO2 nanofibers (NFs) for photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activity

This work successfully utilised eco-friendly green synthesis to produce Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs). As pollution and energy limitations have become global issues, there is an ongoing need to develop more effective catalysts through straightforward and environmentally friendly methods. The Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) XRD pattern exhibits an anatase TiO₂ and FCC crystal structure of Ag nanoparticles. The SEM investigation revealed a nanofiber-like surface morphology. The Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) exhibits an optical band gap energy is 2.5 eV. Methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), Congo red (CR), and crystal violet (CV) dye aqueous solutions were used to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized Ag-modified TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) under direct sunlight irradiation. The effects of catalyst size on the efficient breakdown of MB dye were also investigated. The optimum catalyst concentration was found to be at 0.02 mg/mL. At 120 min of direct sunlight, the highest photosynthetic degradation efficiency (DE percentage) of 94% was achieved for MB dye. Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) have been demonstrated to have exceptional antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria E-Coli. Because of these great qualities, it seems likely that the Ag-TiO₂ nanofibers (NFs) made could be a great photocatalyst for getting dye pollutants out of wastewater.

Graphene loaded TiO2 submicron spheres scattering layer for efficient dye-sensitized solar cell

Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) have attracted great attention due to environmentally friendly low-cost processing, excellent working ability in diffuse light, and potential to meet the power demands of future buildings due the true class of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Nevertheless, DSSCs have relatively low photoconversion efficiency (PCE) due to multiple issues. Several strategies have been employed to enhance its PCE. For instance, bi-layered structure of photoelectrode i.e., mesoporous TiO₂ transparent layer with top scattering layer was introduced which scatter light inside on large angles improves the harvesting ability of photoelectrode thus enhanced PCE. However, scattering layer is composed of aggregated small particles which offer sluggish electron transport due to multiple grain boundaries, consequently, unwanted recombination reaction which leads to poor PCE. This issue has been addressed for transparent layer immensely but ignored for scattering layer. Mostly for scattering layer in previous studies novel structures have been proposed to enhance scattering properties and dye adsorption only. Therefore, in this study for the first time presenting dual functional graphene/TiO₂ scattering layer in which solvent exfoliated graphene is incorporated in TiO₂ submicron spheres which enhanced electron transport properties, while submicron spheres scatter light effectively. Scattering and electron transport characteristics of DSSCs are thoroughly investigated with the function of graphene loading. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has revealed that diffusion coefficient length and coefficient and conductivity attained maximum value at 0.01 wt%. while other important parameters such as electron lifetime and electron density in conduction band have been improved till 0.020 wt% graphene loading. However, results indicated that with 0.01 w% graphene 33% higher PCE was achieved than without scattering layer and 13% higher than scattering layer without graphene. The depraving in PCE at >0.01 wt% graphene despite of excellent electron transport improvement is attributed to the loss of diffuse reflectance and higher optical absorption by graphene.

Biomolecule Protective and Photocatalytic Potential of Cellulose Supported MoS2/GO Nanocomposite

In the current study, cellulose/MoS2/GO nanocomposite has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Reports published regarding efficiency of Mo and graphene oxide-based nanocomposites for environmental remediation motivated to synthesize cellulose supported MoS2/GO nanocomposite. Formation of nanocomposite was initially confirmed by UV-visible and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. Particle size and morphology of the nanocomposite were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and it was found having particle size ranging from 50 to 80 nm and heterogeneous structure. The XRD analysis also confirmed the structure of the nanocomposite having cellulose, MoS2, and GO. The synthesized nanocomposite was further tested for biomolecule protective potential employing different radical scavenging assays. Results of radical DPPH● (50%) and ABTS ●+ (51%) scavenging studies indicate that nanocomposites can be used as a biomolecule protective agent. In addition, nanocomposite was also evaluated for photocatalytic potential, and the results showed excellent photocatalytic properties for the degradation of 4-nitrophenol up to 75% and methylene blue and methyl orange up to 85% and 70%, respectively. So, this study confirmed that cellulose supported/stabilized MoS2/GO nanocomposite can be synthesized by an ecofriendly, cost-effective, and easy hydrothermal method having promising biomolecule protective and photocatalytic potential.

Comparative study of ZIF-8-materials for removal of hazardous compounds using physio-chemical remediation techniques

The inherent toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity of dyes that are discharged into aquatic ecosystems, harming the health of humans and animals. ZIF-8 based composites are regarded as good adsorbents for the breakdown of dyes in order to remove or degrade them. In the course of this research, metal-organic framework materials known as ZIF-8 and its two stable composites, ZIF-8/BiCoO₃ (MZBC) and ZIF-8/BiYO₃ (MZBY), were produced via a hydrothermal process and solvothermal process, respectively, for the dangerous Congo red (CR) dye removal from the solution in water using adsorption method. According to the findings, the most significant amount of CR dye that could be adsorbed is onto MZBC, followed by MZBY and ZIF-8. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model was used effectively to match the data for adsorption behavior and was confirmed using the Langmuir isotherm equation. There is a possibility that the pH and amount of adsorbent might influence the adsorption behavior of the adsorbents. According to the experiment results, the technique featured an endothermic adsorption reaction that spontaneously occurred. The higher adsorption capability of MZBC is because of the large surface area. This results in strong interactions between the functional groups on the surface of MZBC and CR dye molecules. In addition to the electrostatic connection between functional group Zn-O-H on the surface of ZIF-8 in MZBC and the -NH₂ or SO₃ functional group areas in CR molecules, it also includes the strong π-π interaction of biphenyl rings.

Facile synthesis and comparative study of the enhanced photocatalytic degradation of two selected dyes by TiO2-g-C3N4 composite

Photocatalysis is considered a useful technique employed for the dye degradation through solar light, visible or UV light irradiation. In this study, TiO₂, g-C₃N₄, and TiO₂-g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites were successfully synthesized and studied for their ability to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and Reactive Orange 16 (RO-16), when exposed to visible light. The analytical techniques including XRD, TEM, SEM, DRS, BET, XPS, and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to explore the characteristics of all the prepared semiconductors. The photocatalytic performance of synthesized materials has been tested against both the selected dyes, and various experimental parameters were studied. The experimental results demonstrate that, in comparison to other fabricated composites, the TiO₂-g-C₃N₄ composite with the optimal weight ratio of g-C₃N₄ (15 wt%) to TiO₂ has shown outstanding degrading efficiency against RhB (89.62%) and RO-16 (97.20%). The degradation experiments were carried out at optimal conditions such as a catalyst load of 0.07 g, a dye concentration of 50 ppm, and a temperature of 50 ℃ at neutral pH in 90 min. In comparison to pure TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄, the TiO₂-g-C₃N₄, a semiconductor, has shown higher degradation efficiency due to its large surface area and decreased electron-hole recombination. The scavenger study gave an idea about the primary active species (^-OH radicals), responsible for dye degradation. The reusability of TiO₂-g-C₃N₄ was also examined in order to assess the composite sustainability.

CuO-decorated MOF derived ZnO polyhedral nanostructures for exceptional H2S gas detection

Considering that H₂S is a hazardous gas that poses a significant risk to people's lives, research into H₂S gas sensors has garnered a lot of interest. This work reports a CuO/ZnO multifaceted nanostructures(NS) created by heat treating Cu²⁺/ZIF-8 impregnation precursors, and their microstructure and gas sensing characteristics were examined using various characterization techniques (XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and BET). The as-prepared hollow CuO/ZnO multifunctional nanostructures had a high gas response value (425@50 ppm H₂S gas), quick response and recovery times (57/191s @20 ppm), a low limit of detection (1.6@500 ppb H₂S), good humidity resistance and highly selective towards H₂S gas. The hollow CuO/ZnO multifaceted nanostructures possessed enhanced gas sensing capabilities which may be related to their porous hollow nanostructures, the manufactured p-CuO/n-ZnO heterojunctions, and the spillover effect between CuO and H₂S.

Metal-organic frameworks-derived In2O3/ZnO porous hollow nanocages for highly sensitive H2S gas sensor

The detection of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is critical because of its potential harm and widespread presence in the oil and gas sectors. The zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) derived ZnO nanostructures manufactured as gas sensors have exceptional sensitivity and selectivity for H₂S gas. In/Zn-ZIF-8 template material was synthesized by a simple one-step co-precipitation method followed by thermal annealing in air. The heat treatment resulted in In₂O₃/ZnO nanostructures with mixed heterostructures. The crystal structure (XRD), morphology (SEM/TEM), chemical state (XPS), surface area (BET), etc were investigated to ascertain the nature of the as-prepared material. SEM imagery revealed that the as-prepared In₂O₃/ZnO sensitive material had a microstructure of porous hollow nanocages with an average particle size of about 200 nm, which is beneficial to the diffusion and adsorption of gas molecules. The gas sensing performance test results of the In₂O₃/ZnO hollow nanocages show that their response to H₂S gas is significantly improved 67.5 @50 ppm H₂S (about 11 times that of pure ZnO nanocages) at an optimal temperature of 200 °C, better selectivity, lower theoretical detection limit and good linearity between gas concentration and response values. The enhanced gas sensing feat to H₂S gas is mainly attributed to the formation of n-n heterojunction and the wide surface area of the newly formed In₂O₃/ZnO porous hollow nanocages.

Recyclable Cu-Ag bimetallic nanocatalyst for radical scavenging, dyes removal and antimicrobial applications

An ecofriendly and cost effective green method has been used for the synthesis of recyclable, high functional nanoparticles. Bimetallic nanoparticles (BmNPs), Cu-Ag, have been synthesized using beetroot extract as reducing and capping agent. Formation of BmNPs was initially confirmed by UV-visible analysis, having distinct peaks of Ag at 429 nm and Cu at 628 nm. FTIR analysis also confirmed the association of bioactive phytochemicals with Cu-Ag nanoparticles. Crystallinity and morphology of BmNPs was determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The size of spherical shape Cu-Ag BmNPs was found to be 75.58 nm and EDAX studies confirmed the percent elemental composition of Cu and Ag in synthesized nanocatalyst. Results of different analysis provided supported evidences regarding the formation of BmNPs. Catalytic potential of BmNPs was tested for the degradation of rhodamine B (Rh-B), methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes. Cu-Ag BmNPs exhibited outstanding catalytic activity for the degradation of selected organic dyes and percent degradation was recorded more than 90% for each dye. In addition, antiradical property of BmNPs was tested employing DPPH^● and ABTS^●+ assays and it was found to be promising. Synthesized BmNPs also exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus subtilis. Recyclability of nanoparticles was also evaluated and recovery from dye degradation reaction mixture was successfully achieved. The recovered nanoparticles exhibited same catalytic potential for the degradation of Rh-B. The objective of the current study was to synthesize BmNPs Cu-Ag employing a cost effective green method having promising catalytic, antiradical and antimicrobial potential. Further, BmNPs were reused after recovery from catalytic reactions, proving that BmNPs can be recycled having the same efficiency as that of a freshly prepared Cu-Ag BmNPs.

In-situ construction of binder-free MnO2/MnSe heterostructure membrane for high-performance energy storage in pseudocapacitors

Manganese (Mn)-based oxides are considered suitable positive electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs). However, their cycle stability and specific capacitance are significantly hindered by key restrictions such as structural instability and low conductivity. Herein, we demonstrated a novel nanorod (NR)-shaped heterostructured manganese dioxide/manganese selenide membrane (MnO2/MnSe) on carbon cloth (CC) (denoted as MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC) with a high aspect ratio by a straightforward and facile hydrothermal process. Experiments have demonstrated that doping selenium atoms to oxygen sites reduce electronegativity, increasing the intrinsic electronic conductivity of MnO2, decreasing electrostatic interactions with electrolyte ions, and thus boosting the reaction kinetics. Further, the selenium doping results in an amorphous surface with extensive oxygen defects, which contributed to the emergence of additional charge storage sites with pseudocapacitive characteristics. As expected, novel heterostructured MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC as an electrode for SC exhibits a high capacitance of 740.63 F/g at a current density of 1.5 A/g, with excellent cycling performance (93% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). The MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC exhibited outstanding charge storage capability, dominating capacitive charge storage (84.6% capacitive at 6 mV/s). To examine the practical applications of MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC-ASC as a positive electrode, MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC//AC device was fabricated. The MnO2/MnSe-NR@CC//AC-ASC device performed exceptionally well, with a maximum capacitance of 166.66 F/g at 2 A/g, with a capacitance retention of 94%, after 500 GCD cycles. Additionally, it delivers an energy density of 75.06 Wh/kg at a power density of 1805.1 W/kg and maintains 55.044 Wh/kg at a maximum power density of 18,159 W/kg. This research sheds fresh information on the anionic doping method and has the potential to be applied to the synthesis of positive electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Sonochemical construction of hierarchical strontium doped lanthanum trisulfide electrocatalyst: An efficient electrode for highly sensitive detection of ecological pollutant in food and water

Herbicides are used constantly in agriculture to enhance productivity across the globe. This herbicide monitoring requires utmost importance since its high dose leads to ecological imbalance and a negative impact on the environment. Moreover, a quantification of toxic herbicide is one of the important problems in the food analysis. In this work, deals with the development of a simple, and facile one-pot sonochemical synthesis of strontium doped La₂S₃ (Sr@La₂S₃). Morphological and structural characterization confirms the doping of Sr@La₂S₃ to generate a hierarchical layered structure. The electrochemical performance of modified with rotating disk electrode (RDE) using Sr@La₂S₃ composite is high, compared to La₂S₃ and bare electrodes towards the quantitative detection of mesotrione (MTO) in phosphate buffer. Sr@La₂S₃/RDE showed good sensitivity for MTO detection and it exhibit a range of 0.01-307.01 μM and limit of detection of 2.4 nM. Besides, the selectivity of fabricated electrode is high as it can electrochemically reduce MTO particularly, even in the presence of other chemicals, biological molecules and inorganic ions. The repeatability of MTO detection is high even after 30 days with a lower RSD values. Hence, simple fabrication of Sr@La₂S₃/RDE could be a novel electrode for the sensitive, selective, and reproducible determination of herbicides in real-time applications.

A New CuSe-TiO2-GO Ternary Nanocomposite: Realizing a High Capacitance and Voltage for an Advanced Hybrid Supercapacitor

A high capacitance and widened voltage frames for an aqueous supercapacitor system are challenging to realize simultaneously in an aqueous medium. The severe water splitting seriously restricts the narrow voltage of the aqueous electrolyte beyond 2 V. To overcome this limitation, herein, we proposed the facile wet-chemical synthesis of a new CuSe-TiO₂-GO ternary nanocomposite for hybrid supercapacitors, thus boosting the specific energy up to some maximum extent. The capacitive charge storage mechanism of the CuSe-TiO₂-GO ternary nanocomposite electrode was tested in an aqueous solution with 3 M KOH as the electrolyte in a three-cell mode assembly. The voltammogram analysis manifests good reversibility and a remarkable capacitive response at various currents and sweep rates, with a durable rate capability. At the same time, the discharge/charge platforms realize the most significant capacitance and a capacity of 920 F/g (153 mAh/g), supported by the impedance analysis with minimal resistances, ensuring the supply of electrolyte ion diffusion to the active host electrode interface. The built 2 V CuSe-TiO₂-GO||AC-GO||KOH hybrid supercapacitor accomplished a significant capacitance of 175 F/g, high specific energy of 36 Wh/kg, superior specific power of 4781 W/kg, and extraordinary stability of 91.3% retention relative to the stable cycling performance. These merits pave a new way to build other ternary nanocomposites to achieve superior performance for energy storage devices.

Evaluation of methyl orange adsorption potential of green synthesized chitosan-silver nanocomposite (CS-AgNC) and its notable biocompatibility on freshwater Tilapia (Oreochromis nitoticus)

Nanomaterials mainly nanocomposites possess unique physical and chemical properties which makes them superior and indispensable. Though much research has been focused on the properties and application of nanocomposites, the eco-toxicity assessment is one among top priority, which aims to protect the population of concerned biological component and their ecosystem. With this objective, the present study has undertaken an initiation to evaluate the efficacy of chitosan-silver nanocomposite for methyl orange adsorption property (CS-AgNC) and also assessed the toxicity impact on growth parameters of freshwater Tilapia. Batch in vitro studies showed that all the tested dosages of the nanocomposite were effectively adsorbing maximum concentration of methyl orange. The synthesized nanocomposite was administrated to the tested fishes followed by the determination of various growth, nutritional parameters, gene expression of enzymatic antioxidants and liver, and intestinal tissues histology. Obtained results indicated that nanocomposite treatment was not projected as a toxic impact on all the tested growth, and nutritional parameters. Histology study showed that the exposure of Tilapia to nanocomposite has not shown any detrimental effect on antioxidants gene expression and liver, intestinal tissue architecture. Hence, all these findings indicated that chitosan-silver nanocomposite prepared in our present system was found to be biocompatible which suggested the possible utilization and release of the nanocomposite into the divergent ecosystem without affecting non-target organisms (NTO).

Development of Efficient and Recyclable ZnO-CuO/g-C3N4 Nanocomposite for Enhanced Adsorption of Arsenic from Wastewater

Arsenic (III) is a toxic contaminant in water bodies, especially in drinking water reservoirs, and it is a great challenge to remove it from wastewater. For the successful extraction of arsenic (III), a nanocomposite material (ZnO-CuO/g-C₃N₄) has been synthesized by using the solution method. The large surface area and plenty of hydroxyl groups on the nanocomposite surface offer an ideal platform for the adsorption of arsenic (III) from water. Specifically, the reduction process involves a transformation from arsenic (III) to arsenic (V), which is favorable for the attachment to the -OH group. The modified surface and purity of the nanocomposite were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, HRTEM, and BET models. Furthermore, the impact of various aspects (temperatures, pH of the medium, the concentration of adsorbing materials) on adsorption capacity has been studied. The prepared sample displays the maximum adsorption capacity of arsenic (III) to be 98% at pH ~ 3 of the medium. Notably, the adsorption mechanism of arsenic species on the surface of ZnO-CuO/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite at different pH values was explained by surface complexation and structural variations. Moreover, the recycling experiment and reusability of the adsorbent indicate that a synthesized nanocomposite has much better adsorption efficiency than other adsorbents. It is concluded that the ZnO-CuO/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposite can be a potential candidate for the enhanced removal of arsenic from water reservoirs.

Stability of Tin- versus Lead-Halide Perovskites: Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Perovskite/Water Interfaces

Tin-halide perovskites (THPs) have emerged as promising lead-free perovskites for photovoltaics and photocatalysis applications but still fall short in terms of stability and efficiency with respect to their lead-based counterpart. A detailed understanding of the degradation mechanism of THPs in a water environment is missing. This Letter presents ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations to unravel atomistic details of THP/water interfaces comparing methylammonium tin iodide, MASnI₃, with the lead-based MAPbI₃. Our results reveal facile solvation of surface tin-iodine bonds in MASnI₃, while MAPbI₃ remains more robust to degradation despite a larger amount of adsorbed water molecules. Additional AIMD simulations on dimethylammonium tin bromide, DMASnBr₃, investigate the origins of their unprecedented water stability. Our results indicate the presence of amorphous surface layers of hydrated zero-dimensional SnBr₃ complexes which may protect the inner structure from degradation and explain their success as photocatalysts. We believe that the atomistic details of the mechanisms affecting THP (in-)stability may inspire new strategies to stabilize THPs.

First-Principles Molecular Dynamics in Metal-Halide Perovskites: Contrasting Generalized Gradient Approximation and Hybrid Functionals

First-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) represents a valuable tool to probe dynamical properties of metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) which are key to their success in optoelectronic devices. Most FPMD studies rely on generalized gradient approximation (GGA) functionals for computational efficiency matters, while hybrid functionals, although computationally demanding, are usually needed to accurately describe structural and electronic properties of MHPs. This Letter reports FPMD simulations on CsPbI₃ based on the hybrid PBE0 functional. Our results demonstrate that PBE0 leads to lattice parameters and phonon modes in excellent agreement with experimental data, while GGA results overestimate the lattice parameter and the electronic band gap and underestimate the phonon energies. Our FPMD results also shed light on anharmonic effects and double-well instabilities in the octahedral tilting, highlighting a lowered free energy barrier for PBE0 and farther separated potential wells. Our results suggest that hybrid functionals are required to accurately describe crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and anharmonicity in MHPs.

Lanthanide type of cerium sulfide embedded carbon nitride composite modified electrode for potential electrochemical detection of sulfaguanidine

Environmental sustainability is threatened by the widespread exploitation and unfettered release of chemical pollutants that require immediate detection and eradication. An instantaneous quantification technique is essential to understand the physiological roles of the antibacterial drug sulfaguanidine (SGN) in biological systems. The present work features the green and environmentally benign synthesis of rare earth metal sulfide nanorods incorporated carbon nitrides sheets (Ce₂S₃@CNS) by deep eutectic solvent-based fabrication with remarkable electrochemical properties. The morphological and structural analyses of the prepared electrocatalyst were characterized using various techniques including SEM, XRD, XPS, and EIS. The heterojunction of regimented structures bids synergistic quantum confinement effects and refines charge carriers endorsing enormous active sites. Furthermore, the obtained Ce₂S₃@CNS/GCE possess an exceedingly lower limit of detection (0.0053 μM) and high sensitivity of 8.685 μA·μM^-1·cm^-2 with superior electrocatalytic action and virtuous stability for the detection of SGN. This modified electrode could afford linearity in the range 0.01-1131.5 μM measured at 0.95 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) correlated to the concentration of SGN. Examining the real samples with this advanced electrocatalyst would support its hands-on applications in everyday life. Development of such innovative architectures with fewer energy necessities and nominal by-products scripts the superiority in characteristic synthetic methodology following the guidelines of green chemistry.

Multi-biological combined system: A mechanistic approach for removal of multiple heavy metals

In this work, interactions of diverse fungal species by the manipulation of cell concentrations has been utilized as the driving feature for the removal of hazardous multi-metals from the aqueous solutions. This study is focused on the exploitation of internal structures of microbes as a repository of lead (Pb(II)) and nickel (Ni(II)). For the concerned purpose 24 heavy metal resistant fungi are isolated from different industrial waste sites to form different microbial combinations as a single unit 'consortia' for achieving highest possible removal rates. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing are involved for the biochemical characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the screened isolates. The identification and screening studies reveal isolated strains as two Pb resistant fungi viz. K₁SF-Pb15 (Aspergillus terreus) and SEF-Pb (Talaromyces islandicus) which have shown metal removal up to 93% and two Ni(II) tolerant fungal isolates namely, MEF-Ni-11 (Neurospora crassa) and Ni-1 (Aspergillus flavus) with removal efficiency of more than 91%. Relationship has been validated between the biosorption capacity and efficiency of the novel consortium under the influence of variable pH, time duration, initial concentration of Pb(II) and Ni(II), and inoculum size which has led to the foundation of effective and economical parameters for its exploitation in practical fields. The fungal consortia when applied on various industrial effluents has exhibited more than 95% of removal for both Pb(II) and Ni(II) simultaneously. The detailed mechanistic insight has shown the involvement of physical, chemical and ionic forces for the removal of heavy metals. So the designed novel multi-biological combined system acted as a repository for Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions with a greater potential which can be guided by the mechanistic methodology for the retrieval and remediation of multiple heavy metals from the real waste water samples.

Bismuth telluride decorated on graphitic carbon nitrides based binary nanosheets: Its application in electrochemical determination of salbutamol (feed additive) in meat samples

The design and fabrication of effective electrochemical sensor for ultrasensitive detection of feed additive and multidrug are highly significant in food analysis. In this work, we explored to develop the possibility for rapid detection of feed additive drug using bismuth telluride (Bi₂Te₃) decorated graphitic carbon nitrides (GCN) nanostructures as a modified electrode for electrochemical sensing. Herein, the modified electrode was focused on the development of electrocatalytic performances for the determination of salbutamol in food products. The electrochemical sensors are developed by bismuth telluride sheets interconnected with graphitic carbon nitrides sheets (Bi₂Te₃/GCN) on to a screen-printed carbon electrode. The binary nanosheets of Bi₂Te₃/GCN exhibited an enhanced electrocatalytic ability towards salbutamol detection owing to their selective adsorption, by the combination of electrostatic interaction of binary nanosheets and the formation of charge assisted interactions between salbutamol and Bi₂Te₃/GCN surfaces. A nanomolar limit of detection (1.36 nM) was calculated in 0.05 M phosphate buffer (PB) supporting electrolyte (pH 7.0) using differential pulse voltammetry. The linear dynamic ranges with respect to salbutamol concentration were 0.01-892.5 μM, and the sensitivity of the sensor was 36.277 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. The sensor stability and reproducibility performances were observed. However, the obtained results are highly satisfactory which suggest the application of binary nanosheets in real-time food analysis.

Aggregation behavior and thermodynamic properties of the mixture of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide in numerous temperatures and mixed solvents

Interaction of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB; cationic in nature) in H2O and additives (alcohols and diols) media has been investigated using conductivity technique. The micellar parameters such as critical micelle concentration (cmc), fraction of counter ion binding (β), thermodynamic parameters, transfer properties, and enthalpy-entropy compensation parameters of CTAB + SCMC mixture have been assessed in water and aq. alcohols/diols media. One cmc value was achieved for CTAB + SCMC mixtures in the entire circumstances and the attendance of SCMC disfavors the CTAB micellization. The cmc values were obtained to be greater in alcohols and diols media compared to H2O medium. The cmc values also exhibit a dependency on the solvent composition and temperature variation. In all the cases, the ΔG 0 m values were achieved to be negative which signifying the spontaneous formation of micelles while the extent of spontaneity is decreased in alcohols and diols media. Both the ΔH 0 m and ΔS 0 m reveal that hydrophobic, ion-dipole as well as electrostatic interactions are the proposed binding forces between CTAB and SCMC. The compensation parameters (ΔH 0* m and T c ) are in decent agreement with the biological fluid.

Energy vs Charge Transfer in Manganese-Doped Lead Halide Perovskites

Mn-doped lead halide perovskites exhibit long-lived dopant luminescence and enhanced host excitonic quantum yield. The contention between energy and charge transfer in sensitizing dopant luminescence in Mn-doped perovskites is investigated by state-of-the-art DFT calculations on APbX₃ perovskites (X = Cl, Br, and I). We quantitatively simulate the electronic structure of Mn-doped perovskites in various charge and spin states, providing a structural/mechanistic analysis of Mn sensitization as a function of the perovskite composition. Our analysis supports both energy- and charge-transfer mechanisms, with the latter probably preferred in Mn:CsPbCl₃ due to small energy barriers and avoidance of spin and orbital restrictions. An essential factor determining the dopant luminescence quantum yield in the case of charge transfer is the energetics of intermediate oxidized species, while bandgap resonance can well explain energy transfer. Both aspects are mediated by perovskite host band edge energetics, which is tuned in turn by the nature of the halide X.

Facile Electrochemical Determination of Methotrexate (MTX) Using Glassy Carbon Electrode-Modified with Electronically Disordered NiO Nanostructures

Recently, the oxidative behavior of methotrexate (MTX) anticancer drug is highly demanded, due to its side effects on healthy cells, despite being a very challenging task. In this study, we have prepared porous NiO material using sodium sulfate as an electronic disorder reagent by hydrothermal method and found it highly sensitive and selective for the oxidation of MTX. The synthesized NiO nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. These physical characterizations delineated the porous morphology and cubic crystalline phase of NiO. Different electrochemical approaches have been utilized to determine the MTX concentrations in 0.04 M Britton-Robinson buffer (BRB) at pH 2 using glassy carbon electrode (GCE)-modified with electronically disordered NiO nanostructures. The linear range for MTX using cyclic voltammetry (CV) was found to be from 5 to 30 nM, and the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 1.46 nM and 4.86 nM, respectively, whereas the linear range obtained via linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) was estimated as 15-90 nM with LOD and LOQ of 0.819 nM and 2.713 nM, respectively. Additionally, amperometric studies revealed a linear range from 10 to70 nM with LOD and LOQ of 0.1 nM and 1.3 nM, respectively. Importantly, MTX was successfully monitored in pharmaceutical products using the standard recovery method. Thus, the proposed approach for the synthesis of active metal oxide materials could be sued for the determination of other anticancer drugs in real samples and other biomedical applications.

Nanoporous carbon nitride with a high content of inbuilt N site for the CO2 capture

We report the nanoconfinement-mediated graphitic nanoporous carbon nitride (gNPCN) adsorbents with a high content of inbuilt basic nitrogen (N) (48%) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for efficient CO₂ adsorption. The gNPCNs (gNPCN-150 and gNPCN-130) are synthesized using the mesoporous SBA-15 silica template and a single carbon-nitrogen (C-N) precursor (guanidine hydrochloride). The various adsorbents were utilized for investigating the influence of pore size (PS), surface area (SA), and type of adsorbent for CO₂ adsorption performance. The capacity for CO₂ capturing of gNPCN-150 reached 23.1 mmol/g at 0 °C under 30 bar pressure. This CO₂ capturing capacity value was higher than the capacity gNPCN-130, SBA15, activated carbon (AC), and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCN) under identical conditions. The gNPCN materials exhibited superior CO₂ adsorption ability that is ascribed to the presence of the highly organized mesoporosity, inbuilt high content of basic N site for adsorbing more CO₂ through acid-base interaction, and tunable surface-structural properties. Moreover, the synthesis strategy is remarkably flexible in selecting C-N sources. This study features graphitic high-ordered nanoporous CN materials as a resourceful platform towards the efficient CO₂ capture.

Increased Crystallization of CuTCNQ in Water/DMSO Bisolvent for Enhanced Redox Catalysis

Controlling the kinetics of CuTCNQ (TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) crystallization has been a major challenge, as CuTCNQ crystallizing on Cu foil during synthesis in conventional solvents such as acetonitrile simultaneously dissolves into the reaction medium. In this work, we address this challenge by using water as a universal co-solvent to control the kinetics of crystallization and growth of phase I CuTCNQ. Water increases the dielectric constant of the reaction medium, shifting the equilibrium toward CuTCNQ crystallization while concomitantly decreasing the dissolution of CuTCNQ. This allows more CuTCNQ to be controllably crystallized on the surface of the Cu foil. Different sizes of CuTCNQ crystals formed on Cu foil under different water/DMSO admixtures influence the solvophilicity of these materials. This has important implications in their catalytic performance, as water-induced changes in the surface properties of these materials can make them highly hydrophilic, which allows the CuTCNQ to act as an efficient catalyst as it brings the aqueous reactants in close vicinity of the catalyst. Evidently, the CuTCNQ synthesized in 30% (v/v) water/DMSO showed superior catalytic activity for ferricyanide reduction with 95% completion achieved within a few minutes in contrast to CuTCNQ synthesized in DMSO that took over 92 min.

Mesoporous gold-silver alloy films towards amplification-free ultra-sensitive microRNA detection

Herein, we report the preparation of mesoporous gold (Au)-silver (Ag) alloy films through the electrochemical micelle assembly process and their applications as microRNA (miRNA) sensors. Following electrochemical deposition and subsequent removal of the templates, the polymeric micelles can create uniformly sized mesoporous architectures with high surface areas. The resulting mesoporous Au-Ag alloy films show high current densities (electrocatalytic activities) towards the redox reaction between potassium ferrocyanide and potassium ferricyanide. Following magnetic isolation and purification, the target miRNA is adsorbed directly on the mesoporous Au-Ag film. Electrochemical detection is then enabled by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) using the [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- redox system (the faradaic current for the miRNA-adsorbed Au-Ag film decreases compared to the bare film). The films demonstrate great advantages towards miRNA sensing platforms to enhance the detection limit down to attomolar levels of miR-21 (limit of detection (LOD) = 100 aM, s/n = 3). The developed enzymatic amplification-free miniaturized analytical sensor has promising potential for RNA-based diagnosis of diseases.

Hydrothermally synthesized cubical zinc manganite nanostructure for electrocatalytic detection of sulfadiazine

An electrocatalyst modified electrode has been investigated to develop the rapid detection of antibiotics. The modified electrocatalyst was intended for the determination of sulfadiazine (SFZ) in biological fluids by electrochemical methods. Nanocube of zinc manganite (ZnMn₂O₄-NC) is prepared by hydrothermal method and a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) has been modified with the zinc manganite. The ZnMn₂O₄/GCE exhibit enhanced detection performances towards SFZ drug owing to their selective adsorption ability and the combination of electrostatic attraction of nanocube with SFZ. The modified electrocatalyst shows excellent electrocatalytic interactions with antibiotic drug. Besides, the modified sensors exhibit nanomolar detection limit (0.0021 μM) in 0.05 M phosphate buffer (pH = 7.0) using differential pulse voltammetric method. The working range of the modified electrode is 0.008-1264 μM, and the sensitivity of the SFZ sensor is 11.44 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. The modified sensor stability and reproducibility performances have been examined by electrochemical method. In addition, the obtained results of real sample analysis with different concentrations of SFZ in biological fluids are satisfactory with good recovery.

Design and fabrication of green and sustainable vapochromic cellulose fibers embedded with natural anthocyanin for detection of toxic ammonia

Exposure to colorless ammonia gas may lead to damage in human organs or even death. Herein, we describe facile fabrication of an environmentally-friendly, portable, reversible, and sensitive solid-state colorimetric cellulose (Cell)/anthocyanin (Anth) vapochromic sensor that exhibits instant visual color change to both gaseous and aqueous phases of ammonia. The naturally occurring anthocyanin can be easily extracted from the red-cabbage plant and applied as a direct dyestuff onto viscose fibers in the presence of potassium aluminum sulfate as mordant to generate nanoparticles of mordant/anthocyanin coordinated complex. Thus, upon exposure to aqueous ammonia, an instant color change of the smart (Cell-Anth) diagnostic assays, from purple to colorless, was noted and quantitatively probed via both CIE Lab coordinates and UV-Vis spectral measurements. Importantly, the fabricated (Cell-Anth) viscose fabric showed rapid responses, fraction of second, with a good limit of detection (LOD) in the range of 200-1200 mg L^-1. This receptor also demonstrated ratiometric changes in the UV-Vis absorbance spectra, giving a hypsochromic shift from 611 to 375 nm upon increasing the total content of ammonia in an aqueous media. The morphologies of Cell-Anth fabrics as well as particle size of the generated mordant/dye complex on the fabric surface have been characterized by transmission electron microscopic (TEM), scan electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray patterns (EDX) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic (FT-IR). The comfortability of the dyed cellulose fibers was also investigated in terms of their bend length, air-permeability and colorfastness properties. Significantly, the present study offers a promising onsite vapochromic device that enables detection of ammonia in either aqueous or gas phase in various environments and products.

An electrochemical sensing of phenolic derivative 4-Cyanophenol in environmental water using a facile-constructed Aurivillius-structured Bi2MoO6

Harmful chemicals are always found in the environment and it is necessary to construct a viable sensor to detect those chemicals. In order to construct an electrochemical sensing platform, designing an electrode using bismuth mixed oxides are more important and which grabbed more attention due to its high electrocatalytic ability and conductivity. In this literature, we report a facile synthesis of thorn apple like structured pure bismuth molybdate (Bi₂MoO₆) using a simple hydrothermal assisted one-step calcination method and we report a facile method to sense 4-cyanophenol by electrochemical technique. Bi₂MoO₆ modified (Glassy Carbon electrode) GCE possess two linear ranges 0.1-39.1 µM and 46.6-110.1 µM with excellent detection limit 0.008297 µM and 0.01097 µM. Also, this novel sensor is steady with good stability, repeatability, and reproducibility. Successfully, the environmental water sample is analyzed as a real sample with a feasible and quantification results which were compared with HPLC analysis.

Tunable Concave Surface Features of Mesoporous Palladium Nanocrystals Prepared from Supramolecular Micellar Templates

Concave metallic nanocrystals with a high density of low-coordinated atoms on the surface are essential for the realization of unique catalytic properties. Herein, mesoporous palladium nanocrystals (MPNs) that possess various degrees of curvature are successfully synthesized following an approach that relies on a facile polymeric micelle assembly approach. The as-prepared MPNs exhibit larger surface areas compared to conventional Pd nanocrystals and their nonporous counterparts. The MPNs display enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation when compared to state-of-the-art commercial palladium black and conventional palladium nanocubes used as catalysts. Interestingly, as the degree of curvature increases, the surface-area-normalized activity also increases, demonstrating that the curvature of MPNs and the presence of high-index facets are crucial considerations for the design of electrocatalysts.
