How Reproducible is the Synthesis of Zr-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Frameworks? An Interlaboratory Study

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a rapidly growing class of materials that offer great promise in various applications. However, the synthesis remains challenging: for example, a range of crystal structures can often be accessed from the same building blocks, which complicates the phase selectivity. Likewise, the high sensitivity to slight changes in synthesis conditions may cause reproducibility issues. This is crucial, as it hampers the research and commercialization of affected MOFs. Here, it presents the first-ever interlaboratory study of the synthetic reproducibility of two Zr-porphyrin MOFs, PCN-222 and PCN-224, to investigate the scope of this problem. For PCN-222, only one sample out of ten was phase pure and of the correct symmetry, while for PCN-224, three are phase pure, although none of these show the spatial linker order characteristic of PCN-224. Instead, these samples resemble dPCN-224 (disordered PCN-224), which has recently been reported. The variability in thermal behavior, defect content, and surface area of the synthesised samples are also studied. The results have important ramifications for field of metal-organic frameworks and their crystallization, by highlighting the synthetic challenges associated with a multi-variable synthesis space and flat energy landscapes characteristic of MOFs.

Design of Mixed-Matrix MOF Membranes with Asymmetric Filler Density and Intrinsic MOF/Polymer Compatibility for Enhanced Molecular Sieving

The separation of high-value-added chemicals from organic solvents is important for many industries. Membrane-based nanofiltration offers a more energy-efficient separation than the conventional thermal processes. Conceivably, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), encompassing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers, are poised to promote selective separation via molecular sieving, synergistically combining polymers flexibility and fine-tuned porosity of MOFs. Nevertheless, conventional direct mixing of MOFs with polymer solutions results in underutilization of the MOF fillers owing to their uniform cross-sectional distribution. Therefore, in this work, a multizoning technique is proposed to produce MMMs with an asymmetric-filler density, in which the MOF fillers are distributed only on the surface of the membrane, and a seamless interface at the nanoscale. The design strategy demonstrates five times higher MOF surface coverage, which results in a solvent permeance five times higher than that of conventional MMMs while maintaining high selectivity. Practically, MOFs are paired with polymers of similar chemical nature to enhance their adhesion without the need for surface modification. The approach offers permanently accessible MOF porosity, which translates to effective molecular sieving, as exemplified by the polybenzimidazole and Zr-BI-fcu-MOF system. The findings pave the way for the development of composite materials with a seamless interface.

Copper nanoparticles encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 as a stable and selective CO2 hydrogenation catalyst

Metal-organic frameworks have drawn attention as potential catalysts owing to their unique tunable surface chemistry and accessibility. However, their application in thermal catalysis has been limited because of their instability under harsh temperatures and pressures, such as the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. Herein, we use a controlled two-step method to synthesize finely dispersed Cu on a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). This catalyst suffers a series of transformations during the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, leading to ~14 nm Cu nanoparticles encapsulated on the Zn-based MOF that are highly active (2-fold higher methanol productivity than the commercial Cu-Zn-Al catalyst), very selective (>90%), and remarkably stable for over 150 h. In situ spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and kinetic results reveal the preferential adsorption sites, the preferential reaction pathways, and the reverse water gas shift reaction suppression over this catalyst. The developed material is robust, easy to synthesize, and active for CO2 utilization.

Rare Earth -MOFs: From Synthesis to Their Deployment for Amine-Sensing Application in Aqueous Media

The pursuit of developing sensors, characterized by their fluorescence-intensity enhancement or "turn-on" behavior, for accurately detecting noxious small molecules, such as amines, at minimal levels remains a significant challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates as sensors as a result of their diverse structural features and tunable properties. This study introduces the rational synthesis of a new highly coordinated (6,12)-connected rare earth (RE) alb-MOF-3, by combining the nonanuclear 12-connected hexagonal prismatic building units, [RE9(μ3-O)2(μ3-X)12(OH)2(H2O)7(O2C-)12], with the 6-connected rigid trigonal prismatic extended triptycene ligand. The resulting Y-alb-MOF-3 material is distinguished by its high microporosity and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of approximately 1282 m2/g, which offers notable hydrolytic stability. Remarkably, it demonstrates selective detection capabilities for primary aliphatic amines in aqueous media, as evidenced by fluorescence turn-on behavior and photoluminescence (PL) titration measurements. This work emphasizes the potential of MOFs as sensors in advancing their selectivity and sensitivity toward various analytes.

Charge Transfer Process of a Solvated Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Network

We show the first example of an organic linker (OL) terminated by carboxylic groups that can form a hydrogen-bonded network/polymer (HBN) in solution under controlled conditions in which the photogenerated charges can hop from a monomer OL to the hydrogen-bonded backbone of OLs, as probed by transient absorption (fs-TA). While fs-TA reveals a slow twisting process in the monomer form of the OL, the formation of a hydrogen-bonded network in solution suppresses such process and favors instead a charge transfer (CT) state along the low-lying hydrogen-bonded backbone. Theoretical calculations show that such solvated HBN in a specific polar solvent is stabilized due to the huge change of the dipole moment from monomer compared to the network, leading to a charge delocalization character due to the symmetry breaking. Our findings will open new avenues for implementing solvated hydrogen-bonded molecules in applications such as sensing and photocatalysis.

A promising sensing platform for explosive markers: Zeolite-like metal-organic framework based monolithic composite as a case study

Preconcentration for on-site detection or subsequent determination is a promising technique for selective sensing explosive markers at low concentrations. Here, we report divinylbenzene monolithic polymer in its blank form (neat-DVB) and as a composite incorporated with sodalite topology zeolite-like metal-organic frameworks (3-ZMOF@DVB), as a sensitive, selective, and cost-effective porous preconcentrator for aliphatic nitroalkanes in the vapor phase as explosive markers at infinite dilution. The developed materials were fabricated as 18 cm gas chromatography (GC) monolithic capillary columns to study their separation performance of nitroalkane mixture and the subsequent physicochemical study of adsorption using the inverse gas chromatography (IGC) technique. A strong preconcentration effect was indicated by a specific retention volume adsorption/desorption ratio equal to 3 for nitromethane on the neat-DVB monolith host-guest interaction, and a 14% higher ratio was observed using the 3-ZMOF@DVB monolithic composite despite the low percentage of 0.7 wt.% of sod-ZMOF added. Furthermore, Incorporating ZMOF resulted in a higher percentage of micropores, increasing the degree of freedom more than bringing stronger adsorption and entropic-driven interaction more than enthalpic. The specific free energy of adsorption (ΔGS) values increased for polar probes and nitroalkanes, denoting that adding ZMOFs earned the DVB monolithic matrix a more specific character. Afterward, Lewis acid-base properties were calculated, estimating the electron acceptor (KA) and electron donor (KB) constants. The neat-DVB was found to have a Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 7.71, and the 3-ZMOF@DVB had a less Lewis basic character with KB/KA = 3.82. An increased electron-accepting nature can be directly related to incorporating sod-ZMOF into the DVB monolithic matrix. This work considers the initial step in presenting a portable explosives detector or preconcentrating explosive markers trace prior to more sophisticated analysis. Additionally, the IGC technique allows for understanding the factors that led to the superior adsorption of nitroalkanes for the developed materials.

Optimized Charge Storage in Aza-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks by Tuning Electrolyte Proton Activity

Proton activity in electrolytes plays a crucial role in deciding the electrochemical performance of aqueous batteries. On the one hand, it can influence the capacity and rate performance of host materials because of the high redox activity of protons. On the other hand, it can also cause a severe hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) when the protons are aggregated near the electrode/electrolyte interface. The HER dramatically limits the potential window and the cycling stability of the electrodes. Therefore, it is critical to clarify the impact of electrolyte proton activity on the battery macro-electrochemical performance. In this work, using an aza-based covalent organic framework (COF) as a representative host material, we studied the effect of electrolyte proton activity on the potential window, storage capacity, rate performance, and cycle stability in various electrolytes. A tradeoff relationship between proton redox reactions and the HER in the COF host is revealed by utilizing various in situ and ex situ characterizations. Moreover, the origin of proton activity in near-neutral electrolytes is discussed in detail and is confirmed to be related to the hydrated water molecules in the first solvation shell. A detailed analysis of the charge storage process in the COFs is presented. These understandings can be of importance for utilizing the electrolyte proton activity to build high-energy aqueous batteries.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tunable Colors for High-Performance Wireless Communication

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as excellent platforms possessing tunable and controllable optical behaviors that are essential in high-speed and multichannel data transmission in optical wireless communications (OWCs). Here, we demonstrate a novel approach to achieving a tunable wide modulation bandwidth and high net data rate by engineering a combination of organic linkers and metal clusters in MOFs. More specifically, two organic linkers of different emission colors, but equal molecular length and connectivity, are successfully coordinated by zirconium and hafnium oxy-hydroxy clusters to form the desired MOF structures. The precise change in the interactions between these different organic linkers and metal clusters enables control over fluorescence efficiency and excited state lifetime, leading to a tunable modulation bandwidth from 62.1 to 150.0 MHz and a net data rate from 303 to 363 Mb/s. The fabricated color converter MOFs display outstanding performance that competes, and in some instances surpasses, those of conventional materials commonly used in light converter devices. Moreover, these MOFs show high practicality in color-pure wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), which significantly improved the data transmission link capacity and security by the contemporary combining of two different data signals in the same path. This work highlights the potential of engineered MOFs as a game-changer in OWCs, with significant implications for future high-speed and secure data transmission.

Deployment of Superhydrophilic and Super-antifouling Cr--MOF-1-Based Membrane for Ultrafast Separation of Stabilized Oil-in-Water Emulsions

In spite of massive progress in oil-water separation, attributable to the use of advanced materials, the separation process faces challenges such as low permeance and fouling problems. Therefore, superwettable materials used in several fields are considered potential candidates for oily wastewater treatment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are receiving more and more interest in various separation applications due to their wide potential applications. Nevertheless, MOFs have been rarely explored for separating stabilized oil-in-water emulsions due to the difficulty in finding highly hydrolytic stable MOF candidates for this application. Furthermore, oil can clog water-stable materials owing to its high density, causing the degradation of MOF particles. As a result, there is a need to develop better MOF materials that can fulfill these requirements. Herein, we have explored Cr-soc-MOF-1 as a candidate for this application and deployed it as a membrane, which exhibited superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity for separating stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. The Cr-soc-MOF-1 membranes were synthesized by assembling the as-prepared MOF particles on a mixed cellulose ester substrate using a vacuum-assisted self-assembly technique. The Cr-soc-MOF-1 membrane exhibited ultrahigh water permeance (7465.9 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1), very high oil rejection (99.9%), and excellent anti-oil-fouling properties. The Cr-soc-MOF-1 membranes also exhibited excellent recyclability over 10 continuous separation cycles. Further, they exhibited an outstanding performance in separating various surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. Thus, the Cr-soc-MOF-1 membranes exhibit a high potential in treating oily wastewater.

Copper Organometallic Iodide Arrays for Efficient X-ray Imaging Scintillators

Lead-free organic metal halide scintillators with low-dimensional electronic structures have demonstrated great potential in X-ray detection and imaging due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. Herein, the zero-dimensional organic copper halide (18-crown-6)₂Na₂(H₂O)₃Cu₄I₆ (CNCI) which exhibits negligible self-absorption and near-unity green-light emission was successfully deployed into X-ray imaging scintillators with outstanding X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution. In particular, we fabricated a CNCI/polymer composite scintillator with an ultrahigh light yield of ∼109,000 photons/MeV, representing one of the highest values reported so far for scintillation materials. In addition, an ultralow detection limit of 59.4 nGy/s was achieved, which is approximately 92 times lower than the dosage for a standard medical examination. Moreover, the spatial imaging resolution of the CNCI scintillator was further improved by using a silicon template due to the wave-guiding of light through CNCI-filled pores. The pixelated CNCI-silicon array scintillation screen displays an impressive spatial resolution of 24.8 line pairs per millimeter (lp/mm) compared to the resolution of 16.3 lp/mm for CNCI-polymer film screens, representing the highest resolutions reported so far for organometallic-based X-ray imaging screens. This design represents a new approach to fabricating high-performance X-ray imaging scintillators based on organic metal halides for applications in medical radiography and security screening.

Mixed Matrix Membranes with Surface Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Sieves for Efficient Propylene/Propane Separation

Membrane technology, regarded as an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach, offers great potential to address the large energy penalty associated with the energy-intensive propylene/propane separation. Quest for molecular sieving membranes for this important separation is of tremendous interest. Here, a fluorinated metal-organic framework (MOF) material, known as KAUST-7 (KAUST: King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) with well-defined narrow 1D channels that can effectively discriminate propylene from propane based on a size-sieving mechanism, is successfully incorporated into a polyimide matrix to fabricate molecular sieving mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Markedly, the surface functionalization of KAUST-7 nanoparticles with carbene moieties affords the requisite interfacial compatibility, with minimal nonselective defects at polymer-filler interfaces, for the fabrication of a molecular sieving MMM. The optimal membrane with a high MOF loading (up to 45 wt.%) displays a propylene permeability of ≈95 barrer and a mixed propylene/propane selectivity of ≈20, far exceeding the state-of-the-art upper bound limits. Moreover, the resultant membrane exhibits robust structural stability under practical conditions, including high pressures (up to 8 bar) and temperatures (up to 100 °C). The observed outstanding performance attests to the importance of surface engineering for the preparation and plausible deployment of high-performance MMMs for industrial applications.

A Tailored COF for Visible-Light Photosynthesis of 2,3-Dihydrobenzofurans

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is considered as an ecofriendly and sustainable approach for addressing energy and environmental persisting issues. Recently, heterogeneous photocatalysts based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained considerable attention due to their remarkable performance and recyclability in photocatalytic organic transformations, offering a prospective alternative to homogeneous photocatalysts based on precious metal/organic dyes. Herein, we report Hex-Aza-COF-3 as a metal-free, visible-light-activated, and reusable heterogeneous photocatalyst for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, as a pharmaceutically relevant structural motif, via the selective oxidative [3+2] cycloaddition of phenols with olefins. Moreover, we demonstrate the synthesis of natural products (±)-conocarpan and (±)-pterocarpin via the [3+2] cycloaddition reaction as an important step using Hex-Aza-COF-3 as a heterogeneous photocatalyst. Interestingly, the presence of phenazine and hexaazatriphenylene as rigid heterocyclic units in Hex-Aza-COF-3 strengthens the covalent linkages, enhances the absorption in the visible region, and narrows the energy band, leading to excellent activity, charge transport, stability, and recyclability in photocatalytic reactions, as evident from theoretical calculations and real-time information on ultrafast spectroscopic measurements.

Tunable Photoinduced Charge Transfer at the Interface between Benzoselenadiazole-Based MOF Linkers and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Chromophore

Structural modifications to molecular systems that lead to the control of photon emission processes at the interfaces between photoactive materials play a key role in the development of fluorescence sensors, X-ray imaging scintillators, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, two donor-acceptor systems were used to explore and reveal the effects of slight changes in chemical structure on interfacial excited-state transfer processes. A thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule was chosen as the molecular acceptor. Meanwhile, two benzoselenadiazole-core MOF linker precursors, Ac-SDZ and SDZ, with the presence and absence of a C≡C bridge, respectively, were carefully chosen as energy and/or electron-donor moieties. We found that the SDZ -TADF donor-acceptor system exhibited efficient energy transfer, as evidenced by steady-state and time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that the Ac-SDZ-TADF system exhibited both interfacial energy and electron transfer processes. Femtosecond-mid-IR (fs-mid-IR) transient absorption measurements revealed that the electron transfer process takes place on the picosecond timescale. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations confirmed that photoinduced electron transfer occurred in this system and demonstrated that it takes place from C≡C in Ac-SDZ to the central unit of the TADF molecule. This work provides a straightforward way to modulate and tune excited-state energy/charge transfer processes at donor-acceptor interfaces.

A Zeolite-Like Metal-Organic Framework Based Membrane for Reverse Selective Hydrogen Separation and Butane Isomer Sieving

Here, the fabrication of a defect-free membrane that is based on a zeolite-like metal-organic framework (ZMOF) with the underlying ana topology is reported. The unique ana-ZMOF structure provides high degree of pore connectivity, which is reflected by the fast transport of gases. Prominently, it offers an optimum pore-aperture size, affording notable sieving selectivity for butane/isobutane, and optimal pore energetics for reverse CO₂ /H₂ separation. This emphasize the potential for the application of pure MOF membranes, paving the way to more sustainability of energy resources.

Institution of Metal-Organic Frameworks as a Highly Sensitive and Selective Layer In-Field Integrated Soil-Moisture Capacitive Sensor

The ongoing global industrialization along with the notable world population growth is projected to challenge the global environment as well as pose greater pressure on water and food needs. Foreseeably, an improved irrigation management system is essential and the quest for refined chemical sensors for soil-moisture monitoring is of tremendous importance. Nevertheless, the persisting challenge is to design and construct stable materials with the requisite sensitivity, selectivity, and high performance. Here, we report the introduction of porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as the receptor layer, in capacitive sensors to efficiently sense moisture in two types of soil. Namely, our study unveiled that Cr-soc-MOF-1 offers the best sensitivity (≈24,000 pF) among the other tested MOFs for any given range of soil-moisture content, outperforming several well-known oxide materials. The corresponding increase in the sensitivities for tested MOFs at 500 Hz are ≈450, ≈200, and ≈30% for Cr-soc-MOF-1, Al-ABTC-soc-MOF, and Zr-fum-fcu-MOF, respectively. Markedly, Cr-soc-MOF-1, with its well-known water capacity, manifests an excellent sensitivity of ≈450% in clayey soil, and the analogous response time was 500 s. The noted unique sensing properties of Cr-soc-MOF-1 unveils the great potential of MOFs for soil-moisture sensing application.

High-Rate and Selective CO2 Electrolysis to Ethylene via Metal-Organic-Framework-Augmented CO2 Availability

High-rate conversion of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) to ethylene (C₂ H₄ ) in the CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) requires fine control over the phase boundary of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) to overcome the limit of CO₂ solubility in aqueous electrolytes. Here, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-functionalized GDE design is presented, based on a catalysts:MOFs:hydrophobic substrate materials layered architecture, that leads to high-rate and selective C₂ H₄ production in flow cells and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyzers. It is found that using electroanalysis and operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), MOF-induced organic layers in GDEs augment the local CO₂ concentration near the active sites of the Cu catalysts. MOFs with different CO₂ adsorption abilities are used, and the stacking ordering of MOFs in the GDE is varied. While sputtering Cu on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) (Cu/PTFE) exhibits 43% C₂ H₄ Faradaic efficiency (FE) at a current density of 200 mA cm^{- 2} in a flow cell, 49% C₂ H₄ FE at 1 A cm^{- 2} is achieved on MOF-augmented GDEs in CO₂ RR. MOF-augmented GDEs are further evaluated in an MEA electrolyzer, achieving a C₂ H₄ partial current density of 220 mA cm^-2 for CO₂ RR and 121 mA cm^-2 for the carbon monoxide reduction reaction (CORR), representing 2.7-fold and 15-fold improvement in C₂ H₄ production rate, compared to those obtained on bare Cu/PTFE.

Metal-Organic Frameworks Meet Molecularly Imprinted Polymers: Insights and Prospects for Sensor Applications

The use of porous materials as the core for synthesizing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) adds significant value to the resulting sensing system. This review covers in detail the current progress and achievements regarding the synergistic combination of MIPs and porous materials, namely metal/covalent-organic frameworks (MOFs/COFs), including the application of such frameworks in the development of upgraded sensor platforms. The different processes involved in the synthesis of MOF/COF-MIPs are outlined, along with their intrinsic properties. Special attention is paid to debriefing the impact of the morphological changes that occur through the synergistic combination compared to those that occur due to the individual entities. Thereafter, the strategies used for building the sensors, as well as the transduction modes, are overviewed and discussed. This is followed by a full description of research advances for various types of MOF/COF-MIP-based (bio)sensors and their applications in the fields of environmental monitoring, food safety, and pharmaceutical analysis. Finally, the challenges/drawbacks, as well as the prospects of this research field, are discussed in detail.

Advances in metal-organic framework-based membranes

Membrane-based separations have garnered considerable attention owing to their high energy efficiency, low capital cost, small carbon footprint, and continuous operation mode. As a class of highly porous crystalline materials with well-defined pore systems and rich chemical functionalities, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated great potential as promising membrane materials over the past few years. Different types of MOF-based membranes, including polycrystalline membranes, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), and nanosheet-based membranes, have been developed for diversified applications with remarkable separation performances. In this comprehensive review, we first discuss the general classification of membranes and outline the historical development of MOF-based membranes. Subsequently, particular attention is devoted to design strategies for MOF-based membranes, along with detailed discussions on the latest advances on these membranes for various gas and liquid separation processes. Finally, challenges and future opportunities for the industrial implementation of these membranes are identified and outlined with the intent of providing insightful guidance on the design and fabrication of high-performance membranes in the future.

Asymmetric pore windows in MOF membranes for natural gas valorization

To use natural gas as a feedstock alternative to coal and oil, its main constituent, methane, needs to be isolated with high purity¹. In particular, nitrogen dilutes the heating value of natural gas and is, therefore, of prime importance for removal². However, the inertness of nitrogen and its similarities to methane in terms of kinetic size, polarizability and boiling point pose particular challenges for the development of energy-efficient nitrogen-removing processes³. Here we report a mixed-linker metal-organic framework (MOF) membrane based on fumarate (fum) and mesaconate (mes) linkers, Zr-fum₆₇-mes₃₃-fcu-MOF, with a pore aperture shape specific for effective nitrogen removal from natural gas. The deliberate introduction of asymmetry in the parent trefoil-shaped pore aperture induces a shape irregularity, blocking the transport of tetrahedral methane while allowing linear nitrogen to permeate. Zr-fum₆₇-mes₃₃-fcu-MOF membranes exhibit record-high nitrogen/methane selectivity and nitrogen permeance under practical pressures up to 50 bar, removing both carbon dioxide and nitrogen from natural gas. Techno-economic analysis shows that our membranes offer the potential to reduce methane purification costs by about 66% for nitrogen rejection and about 73% for simultaneous removal of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, relative to cryogenic distillation and amine-based carbon dioxide capture.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for High-Speed Visible-Light Communication

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) based on luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and emissive polymers with the combination of their unique advantages have great potential in separation science, sensing, and light-harvesting applications. Here, we demonstrate MMMs for the field of high-speed visible-light communication (VLC) using a very efficient energy transfer strategy at the interface between a MOF and an emissive polymer. Our steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved experiments, supported by high-level density functional theory calculations, revealed that efficient and ultrafast energy transfer from the luminescent MOF to the luminescent polymer can be achieved. The resultant MMMs exhibited an excellent modulation bandwidth of around 80 MHz, which is higher than those of most well-established color-converting phosphors commonly used for optical wireless communication. Interestingly, we found that the efficient energy transfer further improved the light communication data rate from 132 Mb/s of the pure polymer to 215 Mb/s of MMMs. This finding not only showcases the promise of the MMMs for high-speed VLC but also highlights the importance of an efficient and ultrafast energy transfer strategy for the advancement of data rates of optical wireless communication.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Ultrafast Aggregation-Induced Tunable Emission Enhancement in a Benzothiadiazole-Based Fluorescent Metal-Organic Framework Linker

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) is a process recently exploited in solid-state materials and organic luminophores, and it is explained by tight-molecular packaging. However, solution-phase AIEE and its formation mechanism have not been widely explored. This work investigated AIEE phenomena in two donor-acceptor-donor-type benzodiazole-based molecules (the organic building block in metal-organic frameworks) with an acetylene and phenyl π-conjugated backbone tapered with a carboxylic acid group at either end. This was done using time-resolved electronic and vibrational spectroscopy in conjunction with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Fluorescence up-conversion spectroscopy and time-correlated single-photon counting conclusively showed an intramolecular charge transfer-driven aggregate emission enhancement. This is shown by a red spectral shift of the emission spectra as well as an increase in the fluorescence lifetime from 746 ps at 1.0 × 10^-11 to 2.48 ns at 2.0 × 10^-3 M. The TD-DFT calculations showed that a restricted intramolecular rotation mechanism is responsible for the enhanced emission. The femtosecond infrared (IR) transient absorption results directly revealed the structural dynamics of aggregate formation, as evident from the evolution of the C≡C vibrational marker mode of the acetylene unit upon photoexcitation. Moreover, the IR data clearly indicated that the aggregation process occurred over a time scale of 10 ps, which is consistent with the fluorescence up-conversion results. Interestingly, time-resolved results and DFT calculations clearly demonstrated that both acetylene bonds and the sulfur atom are the key requirements to achieve such a controllable aggregation-induced fluorescence enhancement. The finding of the work not only shows how slight changes in the chemical structure of fluorescent chromophores could make a tremendous change in their optical behavior but also prompts a surge of research into a profound understanding of the mechanistic origins of this phenomenon. This may lead to the discovery of new chemical strategies that aim to synthesize novel chromophores with excellent optical properties for light-harvesting applications.

High-Capacity NH4+ Charge Storage in Covalent Organic Frameworks

Ammonium ions (NH₄⁺), as non-metallic charge carriers, have spurred great research interest in the realm of aqueous batteries. Unfortunately, most inorganic host materials used in these batteries are still limited by the sluggish diffusion kinetics. Here, we report a unique hydrogen bond chemistry to employ covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for NH₄⁺ ion storage, which achieves a high capacity of 220.4 mAh g^-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g^-1. Combining the theoretical simulation and materials analysis, a universal mechanism for the reaction of nitrogen and oxygen bridged by hydrogen bonds is revealed. In addition, we explain the solvation behavior of NH₄⁺, leading to a relationship between redox potential and desolvation energy barrier. This work provides a new insight into NH₄⁺ ion storage in host materials based on hydrogen bond chemistry. This mechanism can be leveraged to design and develop COFs for electrochemical energy storage.

Molecular Engineering of Covalent Organic Framework Cathodes for Enhanced Zinc-Ion Batteries

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are potentially promising electrode materials for electrochemical charge storage applications thanks to their pre-designable reticular chemistry with atomic precision, allowing precise control of pore size, redox-active functional moieties, and stable covalent frameworks. However, studies on the mechanistic and practical aspects of their zinc-ion storage behavior are still limited. In this study, a strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of COF cathodes in zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) by introducing the quinone group into 1,4,5,8,9,12-hexaazatriphenylene-based COFs is reported. Electrochemical characterization demonstrates that the introduction of the quinone groups in the COF significantly pushes up the Zn²⁺ storage capability against H⁺ and elevates the average (dis-)charge potential in aqueous ZIBs. Computational and experimental analysis further reveals the favorable redox-active sites that host Zn²⁺ /H⁺ in COF electrodes and the root cause for the enhanced electrochemical performance. This work demonstrates that molecular engineering of the COF structure is an effective approach to achieve practical charge storage performance.

Insights into the Enhancement of MOF/Polymer Adhesion in Mixed-Matrix Membranes via Polymer Functionalization

MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) prepared using standard routes often exhibit poor adhesion between polymers and MOFs. Herein, we report an unprecedented systematic exploration on polymer functionalization as the key to achieving defect-free MMMs. As a case study, we explored computationally MMMs based on the combination of the prototypical UiO-66(Zr) MOF with polymer of intrinsic porosity-1 (PIM-1) functionalized with various groups including amidoxime, tetrazole, and N-((2-ethanolamino)ethyl)carboxamide. Distinctly, the amidoxime-derivative PIM-1/UiO-66(Zr) MMM was predicted to express the desired enhanced MOF/polymer interfacial interactions and thus subsequently prepared and evaluated experimentally. Prominently, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed optimal adhesion between the two components in contrast to the nanometer-sized voids/defects shown by the pristine PIM-1/UiO-66(Zr) MMM. Notably, single-gas permeation measurements further corroborated the need of optimal MOF/polymer adhesion in order to effectively enable the MOF to play a role in the gas transport of the resulting MMM.

Directional Exciton Migration in Benzoimidazole-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Highly luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently received great attention due to their potential applications as sensors and light-emitting devices. In these MOFs, the highly ordered fluorescent organic linkers positioning prevents excited-state self-quenching and rotational motion, enhancing their light-harvesting properties. Here, the exciton migration between the organic linkers with the same chemical structure but different protonation degrees in Zr-based MOFs was explored and deciphered using ultrafast laser spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. First, we clearly demonstrate how hydrogen-bonding interactions between free linkers and solvents affect the twisting changes, internal conversion processes, and luminescent behavior of a benzoimidazole-based linker. Second, we provide clear evidence of an ultrafast energy transfer between well-aligned adjacent linkers with different protonation states inside the MOF. These findings provide a new fundamental photophysical insight into the exciton migration dynamics between linkers with different protonation states coexisting at different locations in MOFs and serve as a benchmark for improving light-harvesting MOF architectures.

In situ assembled ZIF superstructures via an emulsion-free soft-templating approach

Assembling well-defined MOF superstructures remains challenging as it requires easily removable hard templates or readily available immiscible solutions for an emulsion-based soft-template approach. In this work, a single-step emulsion-free soft templating approach is reported to spontaneously prepare hollow ZIF-8 and ZIF-67 colloidosomes with no further purification. These superstructures can load different enzymes regardless of the size and charge with a high encapsulation efficiency of 99%. We envisage that this work will expand the repertoires of MOF superstructures by the judicious selection of precursors and the reaction medium.

Realization of an Ultrasensitive and Highly Selective OFET NO2 Sensor: The Synergistic Combination of PDVT-10 Polymer and Porphyrin-MOF

Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are emerging as competitive candidates for gas sensing applications due to the ease of their fabrication process combined with the ability to readily fine-tune the properties of organic semiconductors. Nevertheless, some key challenges remain to be addressed, such as material degradation, low sensitivity, and poor selectivity toward toxic gases. Appropriately, a heterojunction combination of different sensing layers with multifunctional capabilities offers great potential to overcome these problems. Here, a novel and highly sensitive receptor layer is proposed encompassing a porous 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) based on isostructural-fluorinated MOFs acting as an NO₂ specific preconcentrator, on the surface of a stable and ultrathin PDVT-10 organic semiconductor on an OFET platform. Here, with this proposed combination we have unveiled an unprecedented 700% increase in sensitivity toward NO₂ analyte in contrast to the pristine PDVT-10. The resultant combination for this OFET device exhibits a remarkable lowest detection limit of 8.25 ppb, a sensitivity of 680 nA/ppb, and good stability over a period of 6 months under normal laboratory conditions. Further, a negligible response (4.232 nA/%RH) toward humidity in the range of 5%-90% relative humidity was demonstrated using this combination. Markedly, the obtained results support the use of the proposed novel strategy to achieve an excellent sensing performance with an OFET platform.

Molecular enhancement of heterogeneous CO2 reduction

The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂RR) addresses the need for storage of renewable energy in valuable carbon-based fuels and feedstocks, yet challenges remain in the improvement of electrosynthesis pathways for highly selective hydrocarbon production. To improve catalysis further, it is of increasing interest to lever synergies between heterogeneous and homogeneous approaches. Organic molecules or metal complexes adjacent to heterogeneous active sites provide additional binding interactions that may tune the stability of intermediates, improving catalytic performance by increasing Faradaic efficiency (product selectivity), as well as decreasing overpotential. We offer a forward-looking perspective on molecularly enhanced heterogeneous catalysis for CO₂RR. We discuss four categories of molecularly enhanced strategies: molecular-additive-modified heterogeneous catalysts, immobilized organometallic complex catalysts, reticular catalysts and metal-free polymer catalysts. We introduce present-day challenges in molecular strategies and describe a vision for CO₂RR electrocatalysis towards multi-carbon products. These strategies provide potential avenues to address the challenges of catalyst activity, selectivity and stability in the further development of CO₂RR.

Methanol and Humidity Capacitive Sensors Based on Thin Films of MOF Nanoparticles

The successful development of modern gas sensing technologies requires high sensitivity and selectivity coupled to cost effectiveness, which implies the necessity to miniaturize devices while reducing the amount of sensing material. The appealing alternative of integrating nanoparticles of a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) onto capacitive sensors based on interdigitated electrode (IDE) chips is presented. We report the deposition of MIL-96(Al) MOF thin films via the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method on the IDE chips, which allowed the study of their gas/vapor sensing properties. First, sorption studies of several organic vapors like methanol, toluene, chloroform, etc. were conducted on bulk MOF. The sorption data revealed that MIL-96(Al) presents high affinity toward water and methanol. Later on, ordered LB monolayer films of MIL-96(Al) particles of ∼200 nm were successfully deposited onto IDE chips with homogeneous coverage of the surface in comparison to conventional thin film fabrication techniques such as drop-casting. The sensing tests showed that MOF LB films were selective for water and methanol, and short response/recovery times were achieved. Finally, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of a porous thin film of Parylene C (thickness ∼250-300 nm) was performed on top of the MOF LB films to fabricate a thin selective layer. The sensing results showed an increase in the water selectivity and sensitivity, while those of methanol showed a huge decrease. These results prove the feasibility of the LB technique for the fabrication of ordered MOF thin films onto IDE chips using very small MOF quantities.

A Comparative Study of Interdigitated Electrode and Quartz Crystal Microbalance Transduction Techniques for Metal⁻Organic Framework-Based Acetone Sensors

We present a comparative study of two types of sensor with different transduction techniques but coated with the same sensing material to determine the effect of the transduction mechanism on the sensing performance of sensing a target analyte. For this purpose, interdigitated electrode (IDE)-based capacitors and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM)-based resonators were coated with a zeolitic⁻imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) metal⁻organic framework thin films as the sensing material and applied to the sensing of the volatile organic compound acetone. Cyclic immersion in methanolic precursor solutions technique was used for depositing the ZIF-8 thin films. The sensors were exposed to various acetone concentrations ranging from 5.3 to 26.5 vol % in N₂ and characterized/compared for their sensitivity, hysteresis, long-term and short-term stability, selectivity, detection limit, and effect of temperature. Furthermore, the IDE substrates were used for resistive transduction and compared using capacitive transduction.

Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films on High-Curvature Nanostructures Toward Tandem Electrocatalysis

In tandem catalysis, two distinct catalytic materials are interfaced to feed the product of one reaction into the next one. This approach, analogous to enzyme cascades, can potentially be used to upgrade small molecules such as CO₂ to more valuable hydrocarbons. Here, we investigate the materials chemistry of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films grown on gold nanostructured microelectrodes (AuNMEs), focusing on the key materials chemistry challenges necessary to enable the applications of these MOF/AuNME composites in tandem catalysis. We applied two growth methods-layer-by-layer and solvothermal-to grow a variety of MOF thin films on AuNMEs and then characterized them using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The MOF@AuNME materials were then evaluated for electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction. The morphology and crystallinity of the MOF thin films were examined, and it was found that MOF thin films were capable of dramatically suppressing CO production on AuNMEs and producing further-reduced carbon products such as CH₄ and C₂H₄. This work illustrates the use of MOF thin films to tune the activity of an underlying CO₂RR catalyst to produce further-reduced products.

Enhanced CO2/CH4 Separation Performance of a Mixed Matrix Membrane Based on Tailored MOF-Polymer Formulations

Membrane-based separations offer great potential for more sustainable and economical natural gas upgrading. Systematic studies of CO2/CH4 separation over a wide range of temperatures from 65 °C (338 K) to as low as -40 °C (233 K) reveals a favorable separation mechanism toward CO2 by incorporating Y-fum-fcu-MOF as a filler in a 6FDA-DAM polyimide membrane. Notably, the decrease of the temperature from 308 K down to 233 K affords an extremely high CO2/CH4 selectivity (≈130) for the hybrid Y-fum-fcu-MOF/6FDA-DAM membrane, about four-fold enhancement, with an associated CO2 permeability above 1000 barrers. At subambient temperatures, the pronounced CO2/CH4 diffusion selectivity dominates the high permeation selectivity, and the enhanced CO2 solubility promotes high CO2 permeability. The differences in adsorption enthalpy and activation enthalpy for diffusion between CO2 and CH4 produce the observed favorable CO2 permeation versus CH4. Insights into opportunities for using mixed-matrix membrane-based natural gas separations at extreme conditions are provided.

Zeolite-like Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Encaged Pt(II)-Porphyrin for Anion-Selective Sensing

The selectivity and sensitivity of sensors are of great interest to the materials chemistry community, and a lot of effort is now devoted to improving these characteristics. More specifically, the selective sensing of anions is one of the largest challenges impeding the sensing-research area due to their similar physical and chemical behaviors. In this work, platinum-metalated porphyrin (Pt(II)TMPyP) was successfully encapsulated in a rho-type zeolite-like metal-organic framework (rho-ZMOF) and applied for anion-selective sensing. The sensing activity and selectivity of the MOF-encaged Pt(II)TMPyP for various anions in aqueous and methanolic media were compared to that of the free (nonencapsulated) Pt(II)TMPyP. While the photoinduced triplet-state electron transfer of Pt(II)TMPyP showed a very low detection limit for anions with no selectivity, the Pt(II)TMPyP encapsulated in the rho-ZMOF framework possessed a unique chemical structure to overcome such limitations. This new approach has the potential for use in other complex sensing applications, including biosensors, which require ion selectivity.

Mixed matrix formulations with MOF molecular sieving for key energy-intensive separations

Membrane-based separations can improve energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impacts associated with traditional approaches. Nevertheless, many challenges must be overcome to design membranes that can replace conventional gas separation processes. Here, we report on the incorporation of engineered submicrometre-sized metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals into polymers to form hybrid materials that successfully translate the excellent molecular sieving properties of face-centred cubic (fcu)-MOFs into the resultant membranes. We demonstrate, simultaneously, exceptionally enhanced separation performance in hybrid membranes for two challenging and economically important applications: the removal of CO₂ and H₂S from natural gas and the separation of butane isomers. Notably, the membrane molecular sieving properties demonstrate that the deliberately regulated and contracted MOF pore-aperture size can discriminate between molecular pairs. The improved performance results from precise control of the linkers delimiting the triangular window, which is the sole entrance to the fcu-MOF pore. This rational-design hybrid approach provides a general toolbox for enhancing the transport properties of advanced membranes bearing molecular sieve fillers with sub-nanometre-sized pore-apertures.

MOFs for the Sensitive Detection of Ammonia: Deployment of fcu-MOF Thin Films as Effective Chemical Capacitive Sensors

This work reports on the fabrication and deployment of a select metal-organic framework (MOF) thin film as an advanced chemical capacitive sensor for the sensing/detection of ammonia (NH₃) at room temperature. Namely, the MOF thin film sensing layer consists of a rare-earth (RE) MOF (RE-fcu-MOF) deposited on a capacitive interdigitated electrode (IDE). Purposely, the chemically stable naphthalene-based RE-fcu-MOF (NDC-Y-fcu-MOF) was elected and prepared/arranged as a thin film on a prefunctionalized capacitive IDE via the solvothermal growth method. Unlike earlier realizations, the fabricated MOF-based sensor showed a notable detection sensitivity for NH₃ at concentrations down to 1 ppm, with a detection limit appraised to be around 100 ppb (at room temperature) even in the presence of humidity and/or CO₂. Distinctly, the NDC-Y-fcu-MOF based sensor exhibited the required stability to NH₃, in contrast to other reported MOFs, and a remarkable detection selectivity toward NH₃ vs CH₄, NO₂, H₂, and C₇H₈. The NDC-Y-fcu-MOF based sensor exhibited excellent performance for sensing ammonia for simulated breathing system in the presence of the mixture of carbon dioxide and/or humidity (water vapor), with no major alteration in the detection signal.

Liquid phase epitaxial growth of heterostructured hierarchical MOF thin films

Through combining the supermolecular building layer (SBL) approach for designing MOFs with the liquid phase epitaxy growth method, we demonstrate that it is possible to precisely control the epitaxial growth of MOF-on-MOF thin films, for ordered hierarchical tbo-type structures.
