Suppressing Dielectric Loss in MXene/Polymer Nanocomposites through Interfacial Interactions

Although numerous polymer-based composites exhibit excellent dielectric permittivity, their dielectric performance in various applications is severely hampered by high dielectric loss induced by interfacial space charging and a leakage current. Herein, we demonstrate that embedding molten salt etched MXene into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE))/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid matrix induces strong interfacial interactions, forming a close-packed inner polymer layer and leading to significantly suppressed dielectric loss and markedly increased dielectric permittivity over a broad frequency range. The intensive molecular interaction caused by the dense electronegative functional terminations (-O and -Cl) in MXene results in restricted polymer chain movement and dense molecular arrangement, which reduce the transportation of the mobile charge carriers. Consequently, compared to the neat polymer, the dielectric constant of the composite with 2.8 wt % MXene filler increases from ∼52 to ∼180 and the dielectric loss remains at the same value (∼0.06) at 1 kHz. We demonstrate that the dielectric loss suppression is largely due to the formation of close-packed interfaces between the MXene and the polymer matrix.

Ultrafast Coherent Hole Injection at the Interface between CuSCN and Polymer PM6 Using Femtosecond Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy

Tracking the dynamics of ultrafast hole injection into copper thiocyanate (CuSCN) at the interface can be experimentally challenging. These challenges include restrictions in accessing the ultraviolet spectral range through transient electronic spectroscopy, where the absorption spectrum of CuSCN is located. Time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy solves this problem by tracking marker modes at specific frequencies and allowing direct access to dynamical information at the molecular level at donor-acceptor interfaces in real time. This study uses photoabsorber PM6 (poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl-3-fluoro)thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7'-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))]) as a model system to explore and decipher the hole transfer dynamics of CuSCN using femtosecond (fs) mid-infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The time-resolved results indicate that excited PM6 exhibits a sharp vibrational mode at 1599 cm-1 attributed to the carbonyl group, matching the predicted frequency position obtained from time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The fs mid-IR spectroscopy demonstrates a fast formation (<168 fs) and blue spectral shift of the CN stretching vibration from 2118 cm-1 for CuSCN alone to 2180 cm-1 for PM6/CuSCN, confirming the hole transfer from PM6 to CuSCN. The short interfacial distance and high frontier orbital delocalization obtained from the interfacial DFT models support a coherent and ultrafast regime for hole transfer. These results provide direct evidence for hole injection at the interface of CuSCN for the first time using femtosecond mid-IR spectroscopy and serve as a new investigative approach for interfacial chemistry and solar cell communities.

Leveraging Intermolecular Charge Transfer for High-Speed Optical Wireless Communication

Intermolecular charge transfer (CT) complexes have emerged as versatile platforms with customizable optical properties that play a pivotal role in achieving tunable photoresponsive materials. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach for enhancing the modulation bandwidth and net data rates in optical wireless communications (OWCs) by manipulating combinations of monomeric molecules within intermolecular CT complexes. Concurrently, we extensively investigate the intermolecular charge transfer mechanism through diverse steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved spectral techniques in the mid-infrared range complemented by theoretical calculations using density functional theory. These intermolecular CT complexes empower precise control over the -3 dB bandwidth and net data rates in OWC applications. The resulting color converters exhibit promising performance, achieving a net data rate of ∼100 Mb/s, outperforming conventional materials commonly used in the manufacture of OWC devices. This research underscores the substantial potential of engineering intermolecular charge transfer complexes as an ongoing progression and commercialization within the OWC. This carries profound implications for future initiatives in high-speed and secure data transmission, paving the way for promising endeavors in this area.

Sustainable Dual-Ion Batteries beyond Li

The limitations of resources used in current Li-ion batteries may hinder their widespread use in grid-scale energy storage systems, prompting the search for low-cost and resource-abundant alternatives. "Beyond-Li cation" batteries have emerged as promising contenders; however, they confront noteworthy challenges due to the scarcity of suitable host materials for these cations. In contrast, anions, the other crucial component in electrolytes, demonstrate reversible intercalation capacity in specific materials like graphite. The convergence of anion and cation storage has given rise to a new battery technology known as dual-ion batteries (DIBs). This comprehensive review presents the current status, advancements, and future prospects of sustainable DIBs beyond Li. Notably, most DIBs exhibit similar cathode reaction mechanisms involving anion intercalation, while the distinguishing factor lies in the cation types functioning at the anode. Accordingly, the review is organized into sections by various cation types, including Na-, K-, Mg-, Zn-, Ca-, Al-, NH4 + -, and proton-based DIBs. Moreover, a perspective on these novel DIBs is presented, along with proposed protocols for investigating DIBs and promising future research directions. It is envisioned that this review will inspire fresh concepts, ideas, and research directions, while raising important questions to further tailor and understand sustainable DIBs, ultimately facilitating their practical realization.

Highly Stable ZnS Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries Enabled by Structure and Electrolyte Engineering

Zinc sulfide is a promising high-capacity anode for practical sodium-ion batteries, considering its high capacity and the low cost of zinc and sulfur sources. However, the pulverization of particulate zinc sulfide causes active mass collapse and penetration-induced short circuits of batteries. Herein, a zinc sulfide encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon shell (ZnS@NC) was developed for high-performance anodes. The confinement effect of nitrogen-doped carbon stabilizes the active mass structure during cycling thanks to the robust chemically and electronically bonded connections between nitrogen-doped carbon and zinc sulfide nanoparticles. Furthermore, the cycling stability of the ZnS@NC anode is boosted by the robust inorganic-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed in cyclic and linear ether-based electrolytes. The ZnS@NC anode displayed a reversible specific capacity of 584 mAh g-1, an excellent rate capability of 327 mAh g-1 at 70 A g-1, and a highly stable cycling performance over 10000 cycles. This work provides a practical and promising approach to designing stable conversion anodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Real-Time Tracking of Hot Carrier Injection at the Interface of FAPbBr3 Perovskite Using Femtosecond Mid-IR Spectroscopy

One of the most effective approaches to optimizing the performance of perovskite solar cells is to fully understand the ultrafast carrier dynamics at the interfaces between absorber and transporting layers at both the molecular and atomic levels. Here, the injection dynamics of hot and relaxed charge carriers at the interface between the hybrid perovskite, formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3), and the organic electron acceptor, IEICO-4F, are investigated and deciphered by using femtosecond (fs) mid-infrared (IR), transient absorption (TA), and fluorescence spectroscopies. The visible femtosecond-TA measurements reveal the generation of hot carriers and their transition to free carriers in the pure FAPbBr3 film. Meanwhile, the efficient extraction of hot carriers in the mixed FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F film is clearly evidenced by the complete disappearance of their spectral signature. More specifically, the time-resolved results reveal that hot carriers are injected from FAPbBr3 to IEICO-4F within 150 fs, while the transfer time for the relaxed carriers is about 205 fs. The time-resolved mid-IR experiments also demonstrate the ultrafast formation of two peaks at 2115 and 2233 cm-1, which can be attributed to the C≡N symmetrical and asymmetrical vibrational modes of anionic IEICO-4F, thus providing crystal clear evidence for the electron transfer process between the donor and acceptor units. Moreover, photoluminescence (PL) lifetime measurements reveal an approximately 10-fold decrease in the donor lifetime in the presence of IEICO-4F, thereby confirming the efficient electron injection from the perovskite to the acceptor unit. In addition, the efficient electron injection at the FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F interface and its impact on the C≡N bond character are experimentally evidenced and align with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work offers new insights into the electron injection process at the FAPbBr3/IEICO-4F interface, which is crucial for developing efficient optoelectronic devices.

Peptide Gel Electrolytes for Stabilized Zn Metal Anodes

The rechargeable aqueous Zn ion battery (AZIB) is considered a promising candidate for future energy storage applications due to its intrinsic safety features and low cost. However, Zn dendrites and side reactions (e.g., corrosion, hydrogen evolution reaction, and inactive side product (Zn hydroxide sulfate) formation) at the Zn metal anode have been serious obstacles to realizing a satisfactory AZIB performance. The application of gel electrolytes is a common strategy for suppressing these problems, but the normally used highly cross-linked polymer matrix (e.g., polyacrylamide (PAM)) brings additional difficulties for battery assembly and recycling. Herein, we have developed a gel electrolyte for Zn metal anode stabilization, where a peptide matrix, a highly biocompatible material, is used for gel construction. Various experiments and simulations elucidate the sulfate anion-assisted self-assembly gel formation and its effect in stabilizing Zn metal anodes. Unlike polymer gel electrolytes, the peptide gel electrolyte can reversibly transform between gel and liquid states, thus facilitating the gel-involved battery assembly and recycling. Furthermore, the peptide gel electrolyte provides fast Zn ion diffusion (comparable to conventional liquid electrolyte) while suppressing side reactions and dendrite growth, thus achieving highly stable Zn metal anodes as validated in various cell configurations. We believe that our concept of gel electrolyte design will inspire more future directions for Zn metal anode protection based on gel electrolyte design.

Anisotropic Superconducting Nb2 CTx MXene Processed by Atomic Exchange at the Wafer Scale

Superconductivty has recently been induced in MXenes through surface modification. However, the previous reports have mostly been based on powders or cold-pressed pellets, with no known reports on the intrinsic superconsucting properties of MXenes at the nanoale. Here, it is developed a high-temperature atomic exchange process in NH3 atmosphere which induces superconductivity in either singleflakes or thin films of Nb2 CTx MXene. The exchange process between nitrogen atoms and fluorine, carbon, and oxygen atoms in the MXene lattice and related structural adjustments are studied using both experiments and density functional theory. Using either single-flake or thin-film devices, an anisotropic magnetic response of the 2D superconducting transformation has been successfully revealed. The anisotropic superconductivity is further demonstrated using superconducting thin films uniformly deposited over a 4 in. wafers, which opens up the possibility of scalable MXene-based superconducting devices.

High-performance van der Waals antiferroelectric CuCrP2S6-based memristors

Layered thio- and seleno-phosphate ferroelectrics, such as CuInP2S6, are promising building blocks for next-generation nonvolatile memory devices. However, because of the low Curie point, the CuInP2S6-based memory devices suffer from poor thermal stability (<42 °C). Here, exploiting the electric field-driven phase transition in the rarely studied antiferroelectric CuCrP2S6 crystals, we develop a nonvolatile memristor showing a sizable resistive-switching ratio of ~ 1000, high switching endurance up to 20,000 cycles, low cycle-to-cycle variation, and robust thermal stability up to 120 °C. The resistive switching is attributed to the ferroelectric polarization-modulated thermal emission accompanied by the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling across the interfaces. First-principles calculations reveal that the good device performances are associated with the exceptionally strong ferroelectric polarization in CuCrP2S6 crystal. Furthermore, the typical biological synaptic learning rules, such as long-term potentiation/depression and spike amplitude/spike time-dependent plasticity, are also demonstrated. The results highlight the great application potential of van der Waals antiferroelectrics in high-performance synaptic devices for neuromorphic computing.

Highly Reversible Zn Anodes Achieved by Enhancing Ion-Transport Kinetics and Modulating Zn (002) Deposition

Uncontrolled dendrite growth and water-related side reactions in mild electrolytes are the main causes of poor cycling stability of zinc anodes, resulting in the deterioration of aqueous zinc-based batteries. Herein, a multifunctional fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F) aerogel (FAG) interface layer is proposed to realize highly stable zinc anodes via the integrated regulation of Zn2+ migration kinetics and Zn (002) orientation deposition. Owing to the well-defined aerogel nanochannels and the rich Zn2+ adsorption sites resulting from the ion exchange between Ca2+ and Zn2+, the FAG interface layer could significantly accelerate the Zn2+ migration and effectively homogenize the Zn2+ flux and nucleation sites, thus promoting rapid and uniform Zn2+ migration at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Additionally, during the cycling process, the F atoms from FAG promote the in situ generation of ZnF2, which facilitates the manipulation of the preferred Zn (002) orientation deposition, thus efficiently suppressing dendrite growth and side reactions by combining with the above synergistic effects. Consequently, the FAG-modified Zn anode displays a stable cycle life of over 4000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and exhibits highly reversible Zn plating/stripping behavior. Meanwhile, the Zn||MnO2 full cells exhibit improved cycle stability over 2000 cycles compared with that of the bare Zn, highlighting the virtues of the FAG protective layer for highly reversible Zn anodes. Our work brings the insight in to stabilize Zn anodes and power the commercial applications of aqueous zinc-based batteries.

Discovery of a three-proton insertion mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide leading to enhanced charge storage capacity

The α-molybdenum trioxide has attracted much attention for proton storage owing to its easily modified bilayer structure, fast proton insertion kinetics, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the fundamental science of the proton insertion mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide has not been fully understood. Herein, we uncover a three-proton intercalation mechanism in α-molybdenum trioxide using a specially designed phosphoric acid based liquid crystalline electrolyte. The semiconductor-to-metal transition behavior and the expansion of the lattice interlayers of α-molybdenum trioxide after trapping one mole of protons are verified experimentally and theoretically. Further investigation of the morphology of α-molybdenum trioxide indicates its fracture behavior upon the proton intercalation process, which creates diffusion channels for hydronium ions. Notably, the observation of an additional redox behavior at low potential endows α-molybdenum trioxide with an improved specific discharge capacity of 362 mAh g-1.

A Laser-Induced Mo2 CTx MXene Hybrid Anode for High-Performance Li-Ion Batteries

MXenes, a fast-growing family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides/nitrides, are promising for electronics and energy storage applications. Mo2 CTx MXene, in particular, has demonstrated a higher capacity than other MXenes as an anode for Li-ion batteries. Yet, such enhanced capacity is accompanied by slow kinetics and poor cycling stability. Herein, it is revealed that the unstable cycling performance of Mo2 CTx is attributed to the partial oxidation into MoOx with structural degradation. A laser-induced Mo2 CTx /Mo2 C (LS-Mo2 CTx ) hybrid anode has been developed, of which the Mo2 C nanodots boost redox kinetics, and the laser-reduced oxygen content prevents the structural degradation caused by oxidation. Meanwhile, the strong connections between the laser-induced Mo2 C nanodots and Mo2 CTx nanosheets enhance conductivity and stabilize the structure during charge-discharge cycling. The as-prepared LS-Mo2 CTx anode exhibits an enhanced capacity of 340 mAh g-1 vs 83 mAh g-1 (for pristine) and an improved cycling stability (capacity retention of 106.2% vs 80.6% for pristine) over 1000 cycles. The laser-induced synthesis approach underlines the potential of MXene-based hybrid materials for high-performance energy storage applications.

Structure and Interface Engineering of Ultrahigh-Rate 3D Bismuth Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted tremendous attention as promising low-cost energy storage devices in future grid-scale energy management applications. Bismuth is a promising anode for SIBs due to its high theoretical capacity (386 mAh g-1 ). Nevertheless, the huge volume variation of Bi anode during (de)sodiation processes can cause the pulverization of Bi particulates and rupture of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in quick capacity decay. It is demonstrated that rigid carbon framework and robust SEI are two essentials for stable Bi anodes. A lignin-derived carbonlayer wrapped tightly around the bismuth nanospheres provides a stable conductive pathway, while the delicate selection of linear and cyclic ether-based electrolytes enable robust and stable SEI films. These two merits enable the long-term cycling process of the LC-Bi anode. The LC-Bi composite delivers outstanding sodium-ion storage performance with an ultra-long cycle life of 10 000 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g-1 and an excellent rate capability of 94% capacity retention at an ultrahigh current density of 100 A g-1 . Herein, the underlying origins of performance improvement of Bi anode are elucidated, which provides a rational design strategy for Bi anodes in practical SIBs.

TADF-Based X-ray Screens with Simultaneously Efficient Singlet and Triplet Energy Transfer for High Spatial Imaging Resolution

X-ray imaging scintillators play a crucial role in medical examinations and safety inspections, making them an essential technology in our modern lives. However, commercially available high-performance scintillators are fabricated exclusively from ceramic materials that require harsh preparation conditions and are costly to produce. Organic scintillators have emerged as a promising alternative due to their transparency and ease of fabrication at a low cost. Unfortunately, organic scintillators suffer from inefficient exciton utilization efficiency, leading to poor performance in X-ray imaging screens and hindering their commercialization. In this study, we explore the use of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) chromophores (4CzIPN-I and 4CzTPN) to enhance the absorption of ionizing radiation in X-ray imaging screens by an order of magnitude. By leveraging the unique features of TADF chromophores through simultaneously singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet efficient energy transfers at the interface between two different TADF systems, we demonstrate an impressive X-ray sensitivity and radioluminescence intensity. Our time-resolved experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide further evidence for the effectiveness of this approach. The resulting X-ray imaging screens based on this efficient interfacial energy transfer process in TADF systems exhibit outstanding X-ray imaging resolution of 20 line pairs/mm, the highest resolution reported thus far for organic scintillators. This resolution is at least two times higher than that achieved by commonly used commercial inorganic scintillators in the X-ray imaging market. These findings introduce a new component for greatly improving the performance of organic X-ray imaging scintillators, supporting a wide range of emerging X-ray applications with exceptional spatial resolution.

Optimized Charge Storage in Aza-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks by Tuning Electrolyte Proton Activity

Proton activity in electrolytes plays a crucial role in deciding the electrochemical performance of aqueous batteries. On the one hand, it can influence the capacity and rate performance of host materials because of the high redox activity of protons. On the other hand, it can also cause a severe hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) when the protons are aggregated near the electrode/electrolyte interface. The HER dramatically limits the potential window and the cycling stability of the electrodes. Therefore, it is critical to clarify the impact of electrolyte proton activity on the battery macro-electrochemical performance. In this work, using an aza-based covalent organic framework (COF) as a representative host material, we studied the effect of electrolyte proton activity on the potential window, storage capacity, rate performance, and cycle stability in various electrolytes. A tradeoff relationship between proton redox reactions and the HER in the COF host is revealed by utilizing various in situ and ex situ characterizations. Moreover, the origin of proton activity in near-neutral electrolytes is discussed in detail and is confirmed to be related to the hydrated water molecules in the first solvation shell. A detailed analysis of the charge storage process in the COFs is presented. These understandings can be of importance for utilizing the electrolyte proton activity to build high-energy aqueous batteries.

Ti3 C2 Tx MXene van der Waals Gate Contact for GaN High Electron Mobility Transistors

Gate controllability is a key factor that determines the performance of GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). However, at the traditional metal-GaN interface, direct chemical interaction between metal and GaN can result in fixed charges and traps, which can significantly deteriorate the gate controllability. In this study, Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene films are integrated into GaN HEMTs as the gate contact, wherein van der Waals heterojunctions are formed between MXene films and GaN without direct chemical bonding. The GaN HEMTs with enhanced gate controllability exhibit an extremely low off-state current (I_OFF ) of 10^-7 mA mm^-1 , a record high I_ON /I_OFF current ratio of ≈10¹³ (which is six orders of magnitude higher than conventional Ni/Au contact), a high off-state drain breakdown voltage of 1085 V, and a near-ideal subthreshold swing of 61 mV dec^-1 . This work shows the great potential of MXene films as gate electrodes in wide-bandgap semiconductor devices.

Constructing Active BN Sites in Carbon Nanosheets for High-Capacity and Fast Charging Toward Potassium Ion Storage

Nitrogen doping is an effective strategy to improve potassium ion storage of carbon electrodes via the creation of adsorption sites. However, various undesired defects are often uncontrollably generated during the doping process, limiting doping effect on capacity enhancement and deteriorating the electric conductivity. Herein, boron element is additionally introduced to construct 3D interconnected B, N co-doped carbon nanosheets to remedy these adverse effects. This work demonstrates that boron incorporation preferentially converts pyrrolic N species into BN sites with lower adsorption energy barrier, further enhancing the capacity of B, N co-doped carbon. Meanwhile, the electric conductivity is modulated via the conjugation effect between the electron-rich N and electron-deficient B, accelerating the charge-transfer kinetics of potassium ions. The optimized samples deliver a high specific capacity, high rate capability, and long-term cyclic stability (532.1 mAh g^-1 at 0.05 A g^-1 , 162.6 mAh g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 over 8000 cycles). Furthermore, hybrid capacitors using the B, N co-doped carbon anode deliver a high energy and power density with excellent cycle life. This study demonstrates a promising approach using BN sites for adsorptive capacity and electric conductivity enhancement in carbon materials for electrochemical energy storage applications.

Singlet Fission-Based High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging Scintillation Screens

X-ray imaging technology is critical to numerous different walks of daily life, ranging from medical radiography and security screening all the way to high-energy physics. Although several organic chromophores are fabricated and tested as X-ray imaging scintillators, they generally show poor scintillation performance due to their weak X-ray absorption cross-section and inefficient exciton utilization efficiency. Here, a singlet fission-based high-performance organic X-ray imaging scintillator with near unity exciton utilization efficiency is presented. Interestingly, it is found that the X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution of the singlet fission-based scintillator are dramatically improved by an efficient energy transfer from a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer, in which both singlet and triplet excitons can be efficiently harnessed. The fabricated singlet fission-based scintillator exhibits a high X-ray imaging resolution of 27.5 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm^-1 ), which exceeds that of most commercial scintillators, demonstrating its high potential use in medical radiography and security inspection.

Large-Area Metal-Semiconductor Heterojunctions Realized via MXene-Induced Two-Dimensional Surface Polarization

Direct MXene deposition on large-area 2D semiconductor surfaces can provide design versatility for the fabrication of MXene-based electronic devices (MXetronics). However, it is challenging to deposit highly uniform wafer-scale hydrophilic MXene films (e.g., Ti₃C₂T_x) on hydrophobic 2D semiconductor channel materials (e.g., MoS₂). Here, we demonstrate a modified drop-casting (MDC) process for the deposition of MXene on MoS₂ without any pretreatment, which typically degrades the quality of either MXene or MoS₂. Different from the traditional drop-casting method, which usually forms rough and thick films at the micrometer scale, our MDC method can form an ultrathin Ti₃C₂T_x film (ca. 10 nm) based on a MXene-introduced MoS₂ surface polarization phenomenon. In addition, our MDC process does not require any pretreatment, unlike MXene spray-coating that usually requires a hydrophilic pretreatment of the substrate surface before deposition. This process offers a significant advantage for Ti₃C₂T_x film deposition on UV-ozone- or O₂-plasma-sensitive surfaces. Using the MDC process, we fabricated wafer-scale n-type Ti₃C₂T_x-MoS₂ van der Waals heterojunction transistors, achieving an average effective electron mobility of ∼40 cm²·V^-1·s^-1, on/off current ratios exceeding 10⁴, and subthreshold swings of under 200 mV·dec^-1. The proposed MDC process can considerably enhance the applications of MXenes, especially the design of MXene/semiconductor nanoelectronics.

A Tailored COF for Visible-Light Photosynthesis of 2,3-Dihydrobenzofurans

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is considered as an ecofriendly and sustainable approach for addressing energy and environmental persisting issues. Recently, heterogeneous photocatalysts based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained considerable attention due to their remarkable performance and recyclability in photocatalytic organic transformations, offering a prospective alternative to homogeneous photocatalysts based on precious metal/organic dyes. Herein, we report Hex-Aza-COF-3 as a metal-free, visible-light-activated, and reusable heterogeneous photocatalyst for the synthesis of 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans, as a pharmaceutically relevant structural motif, via the selective oxidative [3+2] cycloaddition of phenols with olefins. Moreover, we demonstrate the synthesis of natural products (±)-conocarpan and (±)-pterocarpin via the [3+2] cycloaddition reaction as an important step using Hex-Aza-COF-3 as a heterogeneous photocatalyst. Interestingly, the presence of phenazine and hexaazatriphenylene as rigid heterocyclic units in Hex-Aza-COF-3 strengthens the covalent linkages, enhances the absorption in the visible region, and narrows the energy band, leading to excellent activity, charge transport, stability, and recyclability in photocatalytic reactions, as evident from theoretical calculations and real-time information on ultrafast spectroscopic measurements.

Tunable Photoinduced Charge Transfer at the Interface between Benzoselenadiazole-Based MOF Linkers and Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Chromophore

Structural modifications to molecular systems that lead to the control of photon emission processes at the interfaces between photoactive materials play a key role in the development of fluorescence sensors, X-ray imaging scintillators, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, two donor-acceptor systems were used to explore and reveal the effects of slight changes in chemical structure on interfacial excited-state transfer processes. A thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule was chosen as the molecular acceptor. Meanwhile, two benzoselenadiazole-core MOF linker precursors, Ac-SDZ and SDZ, with the presence and absence of a C≡C bridge, respectively, were carefully chosen as energy and/or electron-donor moieties. We found that the SDZ -TADF donor-acceptor system exhibited efficient energy transfer, as evidenced by steady-state and time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that the Ac-SDZ-TADF system exhibited both interfacial energy and electron transfer processes. Femtosecond-mid-IR (fs-mid-IR) transient absorption measurements revealed that the electron transfer process takes place on the picosecond timescale. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations confirmed that photoinduced electron transfer occurred in this system and demonstrated that it takes place from C≡C in Ac-SDZ to the central unit of the TADF molecule. This work provides a straightforward way to modulate and tune excited-state energy/charge transfer processes at donor-acceptor interfaces.

Preferential Pyrolysis Construction of Carbon Anodes with 8400 h Lifespan for High-Energy-Density K-ion Batteries

Carbonaceous materials are promising anodes for practical potassium-ion batteries, but fail to meet the requirements for durability and high capacities at low potentials. Herein, we constructed a durable carbon anode for high-energy-density K-ion full cells by a preferential pyrolysis strategy. Utilizing S and N volatilization from a π-π stacked supermolecule, the preferential pyrolysis process introduces low-potential active sites of sp² hybridized carbon and carbon vacancies, endowing a low-potential "vacancy-adsorption/intercalation" mechanism. The as-prepared carbon anode exhibits a high capacity of 384.2 mAh g^-1 (90 % capacity locates below 1 V vs. K/K⁺ ), which contributes to a high energy density of 163 Wh kg^-1 of K-ion full battery. Moreover, abundant vacancies of carbon alleviate volume variation, boosting the cycling stability over 14 000 cycles (8400 h). Our work provides a new synthesis approach for durable carbon anodes of K-ion full cells with high energy densities.

Non-Flammable Electrolyte Enables High-Voltage and Wide-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries with Fast Charging

Electrolyte design has become ever more important to enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the flammability issue and high reactivity of the conventional electrolytes remain a major problem, especially when the LIBs are operated at high voltage and extreme temperatures. Herein, we design a novel non-flammable fluorinated ester electrolyte that enables high cycling stability in wide-temperature variations (e.g., -50 °C-60 °C) and superior power capability (fast charge rates up to 5.0 C) for the graphite||LiNi_0.8 Co_0.1 Mn_0.1 O₂ (NCM811) battery at high voltage (i.e., >4.3 V vs. Li/Li⁺ ). Moreover, this work sheds new light on the dynamic evolution and interaction among the Li⁺ , solvent, and anion at the molecular level. By elucidating the fundamental relationship between the Li⁺ solvation structure and electrochemical performance, we can facilitate the development of high-safety and high-energy-density batteries operating in harsh conditions.

MoS2 -Mediated Epitaxial Plating of Zn Metal Anodes

Metal-based anodes (Li, Zn, etc.) are regarded as promising solutions for next-generation advanced batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacities. However, most of these metal anodes suffer from dendrite growth, which severely restricts their practical applications. Recently, epitaxial anode metal deposition by choosing a suitable substrate has received tremendous attention as an effective strategy to suppress dendrites. However, the epitaxial relationship between plated metal and the substrate has been a subject of debate. Herein, large-area, mono-orientated 2D material (MoS₂ ) is used, for the first time, to electrodeposit truly epitaxial Zn anodes. The continuous (without edges) mono-orientated MoS₂ films are shown to be an effective strategy for suppressing metal dendrites. In addition, the epitaxial nature of the electrodeposited Zn anode is proven by pole figure analysis, which provides the first demonstration of truly epitaxial Zn anode growth over large area as metal anode protection strategy through epitaxy.

Defect Engineering of Disordered Carbon Anodes with Ultra-High Heteroatom Doping Through a Supermolecule-Mediated Strategy for Potassium-Ion Hybrid Capacitors

Amorphous carbons are promising anodes for high-rate potassium-ion batteries. Most low-temperature annealed amorphous carbons display unsatisfactory capacities. Heteroatom-induced defect engineering of amorphous carbons could enhance their reversible capacities. Nevertheless, most lignocellulose biomasses lack heteroatoms, making it a challenge to design highly heteroatom-doped carbons (> 10 at%). Herein, we report a new preparation strategy for amorphous carbon anodes. Nitrogen/sulfur co-doped lignin-derived porous carbons (NSLPC) with ultra-high nitrogen doping levels (21.6 at% of N and 0.8 at% of S) from renewable lignin biomacromolecule precursors were prepared through a supramolecule-mediated pyrolysis strategy. This supermolecule/lignin composite decomposes forming a covalently bonded graphitic carbon/amorphous carbon intermediate product, which induces the formation of high heteroatom doping in the obtained NSLPC. This unique pyrolysis chemistry and high heteroatom doping of NSLPC enable abundant defective active sites for the adsorption of K+ and improved kinetics. The NSLPC anode delivered a high reversible capacity of 419 mAh g‒1 and superior cycling stability (capacity retention of 96.6% at 1 A g‒1 for 1000 cycles). Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors assembled by NSLPC anode exhibited excellent cycling stability (91% capacity retention for 2000 cycles) and a high energy density of 71 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 92 W kg-1.

A Sustainable NH4 + Ion Battery by Electrolyte Engineering

Aqueous ammonium ion battery is a promising sustainable energy storage system. However, the side reactions originating from electrolytes (the water decomposition and host material dissolution) preclude its practical applications. Unlike the metal-based aqueous batteries, the idea of "ultrahigh concentrated electrolyte" is not feasible due to the strong hydrolysis of ammonium ions. Therefore, we propose an effective and sustainable strategy for the water hydrogen bond network modulation by adding sucrose into the electrolytes. The sucrose can form sucrose-water hydrogen bond networks to break the continuous water hydrogen bond network, thereby inhibiting water decomposition significantly. Moreover, the weak hydrogen bond interaction between ammonium and sucrose facilitates rapid ion migration, leading to an improved ionic conductivity. This work presents a new electrolyte modulating strategy for the practical application of aqueous ammonium ion batteries.

A 2.75 V ammonium-based dual-ion battery

The popular metal-ion batteries (MIBs) suffer from environmental and economic issues because of their heavy dependency on nonrenewable metals. Here, we propose a metal-free ammonium (NH₄ ⁺ )-based dual-ion battery with a record-breaking operation voltage of 2.75 V. The working mechanism of this sustainable battery involves the reversible anion (PF₆ ^- ) intercalation chemistry in graphite cathode and NH₄ ⁺ intercalation behavior in PTCDI (3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide) anode. This new battery configuration successfully circumvented the reduction susceptibility of NH₄ ⁺ and the lack of mature NH₄ ⁺ -rich cathodes for NH₄ ⁺ ion batteries (AIBs). The customized organic NH₄ ⁺ electrolyte endows the graphite||PTCDI full battery with durable longevity (over 1000 cycles) and a high energy density (200 Wh kg^-1 ). We show that the development of AIBs should be high-voltage-oriented while circumventing low operation potential to avoid NH₄ ⁺ reduction.

High-Yield Ti3 C2 Tx MXene-MoS2 Integrated Circuits

It is very challenging to employ solution-processed conducting films in large-area ultrathin nanoelectronics. Here, spray-coated Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene films as metal contacts are successfully integrated into sub-10 nm gate oxide 2D MoS₂ transistor circuits. Ti₃ C₂ T_x films are spray coated on glass substrates followed by vacuum annealing. Compared to the as-prepared sample, vacuum annealed films exhibit a higher conductivity (≈11 000 S cm^-1 ) and a lower work function (≈4.5 eV). Besides, the annealed Ti₃ C₂ T_x film can be patterned through a standard cleanroom process without peeling off. The annealed Ti₃ C₂ T_x film shows a better band alignment for n-type transport in MoS₂ channel with small work function mismatch of 0.06 eV. The MoS₂ film can be uniformly transferred on the patterned Ti₃ C₂ T_x surface and then readily processed through the cleanroom process. A large-area array of Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene-MoS₂ transistors is fabricated using different dielectric thicknesses and semiconducting channel sizes. High yield and stable performance for these transistor arrays even with an 8 nm-thick dielectric layer are demonstrated. Besides, several circuits are demonstrated, including rectifiers, negative-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor (NMOS) inverters, and voltage-shift NMOS inverters. Overall, this work indicates the tremendous potential for solution-processed Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene films in large-area 2D nanoelectronics.

Porous Metal Current Collectors for Alkali Metal Batteries

Alkali metals (i.e., Li, Na, and K) are promising anode materials for next-generation high-energy-density batteries due to their superior theoretical specific capacities and low electrochemical potentials. However, the uneven current and ion distribution on the anode surface probably induces undesirable dendrite growth, which leads to significant safety hazards and severely hinders the commercialization of alkali metal anodes. A smart and versatile strategy that can accommodate alkali metals into porous metal current collectors (PMCCs) has been well established to resolve the issues as well as to promote the practical applications of alkali metal anodes. Moreover, the proposal of PMCCs can meet the requirement of the dendrite-free battery fabrication industry, while the electrode material loading exactly needs the metal current collector component as well. Here, a systematic survey on advanced PMCCs for Li, Na, and K alkali metal anodes is presented, including their development timeline, categories, fabrication methods, and working mechanism. On this basis, some significant methodology advances to control pore structure, surface area, surface wettability, and mechanical properties are systematically summarized. Further, the existing issues and the development prospects of PMCCs to improve anode performance in alkali metal batteries are discussed.

Quantum Tunneling Effect in CsPbBr3 Multiple Quantum Wells

Two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have garnered incredible attention thanks to their exciting optoelectronic properties and intrinsic strong quantum confinement effect. Herein, we carefully investigate and decipher the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between CsPbBr₃ multiple quantum wells (MQWs) as the photoactive layer and TiO₂ and Spiro-OMeTAD as electron and hole transporting materials, respectively. The fabricated MQWs comprise three monolayers of CsPbBr₃ separated by 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) as barriers. By varying the BCP thickness, we show that charge carrier extraction from MQWs to the corresponding extracting layer occurs through a quantum tunneling effect, as elaborated by steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements and further verified by femtosecond transient absorption experiments. Ultimately, we have investigated the impact of the barrier-thickness-dependent quantum tunneling effect on the photoelectric behavior of the synthesized QW photodetector devices. Our findings shed light on one of the most promising approaches for efficient carrier extraction in quantum-confined systems.

Electrically and optically erasable non-volatile two-dimensional electron gas memory

The high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) generated at the interface between two wide-band insulators, LaAlO₃ (LAO) and SrTiO₃ (STO), is an extensively researched topic. In this study, we have successfully realized reversible switching between metallic and insulating states of the 2DEG system via the application of optical illumination and positive pulse voltage induced by the introduction of oxygen vacancies as reservoirs for electrons. The positive pulse voltage irreversibly drives the electron to the defect energy level formed by the oxygen vacancies, which leads to the formation of the insulating state. Subsequently, the metallic state can be achieved via optical illumination, which excites the trapped electron back to the 2DEG potential well. The ON/OFF state is observed to be robust with a ratio exceeding 10⁶; therefore, the interface can be used as an electrically and optically erasable non-volatile 2DEG memory.

Electrolyte Solvation Structure Design for Sodium Ion Batteries

Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are considered the most promising battery technology in the post-lithium era due to the abundant sodium reserves. In the past two decades, exploring new electrolytes for SIBs has generally relied on the "solid electrolyte interphase (SEI)" theory to optimize the electrolyte components. However, many observed phenomena cannot be fully explained by the SEI theory. Therefore, electrolyte solvation structure and electrode-electrolyte interface behavior have recently received tremendous research interest to explain the improved performance. Considering there is currently no review paper focusing on the solvation structure of electrolytes in SIBs, a systematic survey on SIBs is provided, in which the specific solvation structure design guidelines and their consequent impact on the electrochemical performance are elucidated. The key driving force of solvation structure formation, and the recent advances in adjusting SIB solvation structures are discussed in detail. It is believed that this review can provide new insights into the electrolyte optimization strategies of high-performance SIBs and even other emerging battery systems.

Memristive technologies for data storage, computation, encryption, and radio-frequency communication

Memristive devices, which combine a resistor with memory functions such that voltage pulses can change their resistance (and hence their memory state) in a nonvolatile manner, are beginning to be implemented in integrated circuits for memory applications. However, memristive devices could have applications in many other technologies, such as non-von Neumann in-memory computing in crossbar arrays, random number generation for data security, and radio-frequency switches for mobile communications. Progress toward the integration of memristive devices in commercial solid-state electronic circuits and other potential applications will depend on performance and reliability challenges that still need to be addressed, as described here.

Plasmonic Nb2CTx MXene-MAPbI3 Heterostructure for Self-Powered Visible-NIR Photodiodes

The ability of MXenes to efficiently absorb light is greatly enriched by the surface plasmons oscillating at their two-dimensional (2D) surfaces. Thus far, MXenes have shown impressive plasmonic absorptions spanning the visible and infrared (IR) regimes. However, their potential use in IR optoelectronic applications, including photodiodes, has been marginally investigated. Besides, their relatively low resistivity has limited their use as photosensing materials due to their intrinsic high dark current. Herein, heterostructures made of methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI₃) perovskite and niobium carbide (Nb₂CT_x) MXene are prepared with a matching band structure and exploited for self-powered visible-near IR (NIR) photodiodes. Using MAPbI₃ has expanded the operation range of the MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x photodiode to the visible regime while suppressing the relatively large dark current of the NIR-absorbing Nb₂CT_x. In consequence, the fabricated MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x photodiode has responded linearly to white light illumination with a responsivity of 0.25 A/W and a temporal photoresponse of <4.5 μs. Furthermore, when illuminated by NIR laser (1064 nm), our photodiode demonstrates a higher on/off ratio (∼10³) and faster response times (<30 ms) compared to that of planar Nb₂CT_x-only detectors (<2 and 20 s, respectively). The performed space-charge-limited current (SCLC) and capacitance measurements reveal that such an efficient and enhanced charge transfer depends on the coordinate bonding between the surface groups of the MXene and the undercoordinated Pb²⁺ ions of the MAPbI₃ at the passivated MAPbI₃/Nb₂CT_x interface.

MXenes for Energy Harvesting

Energy harvesting modules play an increasingly important role in the development of autonomous self-powered microelectronic devices. MXenes (i.e., 2D transition metal carbide/nitride) have recently emerged as promising candidates for energy applications due to their excellent electronic conductivity, large specific surface area, and tunable properties. Herein, a perspective on using MXenes to harvest energy from various sources in the environment is presented. First, the characteristics of MXenes that facilitate energy capturing are systematically introduced and the preparation strategies of MXenes and their derived nanostructures tailored toward such applications are summarized. Subsequently, the harvesting mechanism of different energy sources (e.g., solar energy, thermoelectric energy, triboelectric energy, piezoelectric energy, salinity-gradient energy, electrokinetic energy, ultrasound energy, and humidity energy) are discussed. Then, the recent progress of MXene-based nanostructures in energy harvesting, as well as their applications, is introduced. Finally, opinions on the existing challenges and future directions of MXene-based nanostructure for energy harvesting are presented.

Co-Solvent Electrolyte Engineering for Stable Anode-Free Zinc Metal Batteries

Anode-free metal batteries can in principle offer higher energy density, but this requires them to have extraordinary Coulombic efficiency (>99.7%). Although Zn-based metal batteries are promising for stationary storage, the parasitic side reactions make anode-free batteries difficult to achieve in practice. In this work, a salting-in-effect-induced hybrid electrolyte is proposed as an effective strategy that enables both a highly reversible Zn anode and good stability and compatibility toward various cathodes. The as-prepared electrolyte can also work well under a wide temperature range (i.e., from -20 to 50 °C). It is demonstrated that in the presence of propylene carbonate, triflate anions are involved in the Zn²⁺ solvation sheath structure, even at a low salt concentration (2.14 M). The unique solvation structure results in the reduction of anions, thus forming a hydrophobic solid electrolyte interphase. The waterproof interphase along with the decreased water activity in the hybrid electrolyte effectively prevents side reactions, thus ensuring a stable Zn anode with an unprecedented Coulombic efficiency (99.93% over 500 cycles at 1 mA cm^-2). More importantly, we design an anode-free Zn metal battery that exhibits excellent cycling stability (80% capacity retention after 275 cycles at 0.5 mA cm^-2). This work provides a universal strategy to design co-solvent electrolytes for anode-free Zn metal batteries.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for High-Speed Visible-Light Communication

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) based on luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and emissive polymers with the combination of their unique advantages have great potential in separation science, sensing, and light-harvesting applications. Here, we demonstrate MMMs for the field of high-speed visible-light communication (VLC) using a very efficient energy transfer strategy at the interface between a MOF and an emissive polymer. Our steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved experiments, supported by high-level density functional theory calculations, revealed that efficient and ultrafast energy transfer from the luminescent MOF to the luminescent polymer can be achieved. The resultant MMMs exhibited an excellent modulation bandwidth of around 80 MHz, which is higher than those of most well-established color-converting phosphors commonly used for optical wireless communication. Interestingly, we found that the efficient energy transfer further improved the light communication data rate from 132 Mb/s of the pure polymer to 215 Mb/s of MMMs. This finding not only showcases the promise of the MMMs for high-speed VLC but also highlights the importance of an efficient and ultrafast energy transfer strategy for the advancement of data rates of optical wireless communication.

Growth of 2D Materials at the Wafer Scale

Wafer-scale growth has become a critical bottleneck for scaling up applications of van der Waal (vdW) layered 2D materials in high-end electronics and optoelectronics. Most vdW 2D materials are initially obtained through top-down synthesis methods, such as exfoliation, which can only prepare small flakes on a micrometer scale. Bottom-up growth can enable 2D flake growth over a large area. However, seamless merging of these flakes to form large-area continuous films with well-controlled layer thickness and lattice orientation is still a significant challenge. This review briefly introduces several vdW layered 2D materials covering their lattice structures, representative physical properties, and potential roles in large-scale applications. Then, several methods used to grow vdW layered 2D materials at the wafer scale are reviewed in depth. In particular, three strategies are summarized that enable 2D film growth with a single-crystalline structure over the whole wafer: growth of an isolated domain, growth of unidirectional domains, and conversion of oriented precursors. After that, the progress in using wafer-scale 2D materials in integrated devices and advanced epitaxy is reviewed. Finally, future directions in the growth and scaling of vdW layered 2D materials are discussed.

Hierarchical Nanocapsules of Cu-Doped MoS2@H-Substituted Graphdiyne for Magnesium Storage

Hierarchical nanocomposites, which integrate electroactive materials into carbonaceous species, are significant in addressing the structural stability and electrical conductivity of electrode materials in post-lithium-ion batteries. Herein, a hierarchical nanocapsule that encapsulates Cu-doped MoS₂ (Cu-MoS₂) nanopetals with inner added skeletons in an organic-carbon-rich nanotube of hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) has been developed for rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB). Notably, both the incorporation of Cu in MoS₂ and the generation of the inner added nanoboxes are developed from a dual-template of Cu-cysteine@HsGDY hybrid nanowire; the synthesis involves two morphology/composition evolutions by CuS@HsGDY intermediates both taking place sequentially in one continuous process. These Cu-doped MoS₂ nanopetals with stress-release skeletons provide abundant active sites for Mg²⁺ storage. The microporous HsGDY enveloped with an extended π-conjugation system offers more effective electron and ion transfer channels. These advantages work together to make this nanocapsule an effective cathode material for RMB with a large reversible capacity and superior rate and cycling performance.

Three-Dimensional Ti3C2Tx MXene-Prussian Blue Hybrid Microsupercapacitors by Water Lift-Off Lithography

The construction of electrochemical energy-storage devices by scalable thin-film microfabrication methods with high energy and power density is urgently needed for many emerging applications. Herein, we demonstrate an in-plane hybrid microsupercapacitor with a high areal energy density by employing a battery-type CuFe-Prussian blue analogue (CuFe-PBA) as the positive electrode and pseudocapacitive titanium carbide MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) as the negative electrode. A three-dimensional lignin-derived laser-induced graphene electrode was prepared as the substrate by laser exposure combined with an environmentally friendly water lift-off lithography. The designed hybrid device achieved enhanced electrochemical performance thanks to the ideal match of the two types of high-rate performance materials in proton-based electrolytes and the numerous electrochemically active sites. In particular, the device delivers a high areal capacitance of 198 mF cm^-2, a wide potential window (1.6 V), an ultrahigh rate performance (75.8 mF cm^-2 retained even at a practical/high current density of 100 mA cm^-2), and a competitive energy density of 70.5 and 27.6 μWh cm^-2 at the power densities 0.74 and 52 mW cm^-2, respectively. These results show that the Ti₃C₂T_x/CuFe-PBA hybrid microsupercapacitors are promising energy storage devices in miniaturized portable and wireless applications.

Scaled Deposition of Ti3C2Tx MXene on Complex Surfaces: Application Assessment as Rear Electrodes for Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) are of great interest as electrode materials for a variety of applications, including solar cells, due to their tunable optoelectronic properties, high metallic conductivity, and attractive solution processability. However, thus far, MXene electrodes have only been exploited for lab-scale device applications. Here, to demonstrate the potential of MXene electrodes at an industry-relevant level, we implemented a scalable spray coating technique to deposit highly conductive (ca. 8000 S/cm, at a ca. 55 nm thickness) Ti₃C₂T_x films (T_x: surface functional groups, i.e., -OH, -O, -F) via an automated spray system. We employed these Ti₃C₂T_x films as rear electrodes for silicon heterojunction solar cells as a proof of concept. The spray-deposited MXene flakes have formed a conformal coating on top of the indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated random pyramidal textured silicon wafers, leading to >20% power conversion efficiency (PCE) over both medium-sized (4.2 cm²) and large (243 cm², i.e., industry-sized 6 in. pseudosquare wafers) cell areas. Notably, the Ti₃C₂T_x-rear-contacted devices have retained around 99% of their initial PCE for more than 600 days of ambient air storage. Their performance is comparable with state-of-the-art solar cells contacted with sputtered silver electrodes. Our findings demonstrate the high-throughput potential of spray-coated MXene-based electrodes for solar cells in addition to a wider variety of electronic device applications.

MXene-Coated Membranes for Autonomous Solar-Driven Desalination

Clean water supply in off-grid locations remains a stumbling stone for socio-economic development in remote areas where solar energy is abundant. In this regard, several technologies have already introduced various solutions to the off-grid freshwater predicament; however, most of them are either costly or complex to operate. Nonetheless, photothermal membrane distillation (PMD) has emerged as a promising candidate with great potential to be autonomously driven by solar energy. Instead of using energy-intensive bulk feed heating in conventional MD systems, PMD membranes can directly harvest the incident solar light at the membrane interface as an alternative driving energy resource for the desalination process. Because of its excellent photothermal properties and stability in ionic environments, herein, Ti₃C₂T_x MXene was coated onto commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes to allow for a self-heated PMD process. An average water vapor flux of 0.77 kg/m² h with an excellent temporal response under intermitting lighting and a photothermal efficiency of 65.3% were achieved by the PMD membrane under one-sun irradiation for a feed salinity of 0.36 g/L. Naturally, the efficiency of the process decreased with higher feed concentrations due to the reduction of the evaporation rate and the scattering of incident sunlight toward the membrane photothermal surface, especially at rates above 10 g/L. Notably, with such performance, 1 m² of the MXene-coated PMD membrane can fulfill the recommended daily potable water intake for a household, that is, ca. 6 L/day.

Porous Ti3C2Tx MXene Membranes for Highly Efficient Salinity Gradient Energy Harvesting

Extracting osmotic energy through nanoporous membranes is an efficient way to harvest renewable and sustainable energy using the salinity gradient between seawater and river water. Despite recent advances of nanopore-based membranes, which have revitalized the prospect of blue energy, their energy conversion is hampered by nanomembrane issues such as high internal resistance or low selectivity. Herein, we report a lamellar-structured membrane made of nanoporous Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets, exhibiting simultaneous enhancement in permeability and ion selectivity beyond their inherent trade-off. The perforated nanopores formed by facile H2SO4 oxidation of the sheets act as a network of cation channels that interconnects interplanar nanocapillaries throughout the lamellar membrane. The constructed internal nanopores lower the energy barrier for cation passage, thereby boosting the preferential ion diffusion across the membrane. A maximum output power density of the nanoporous Ti3C2Tx MXene membranes reaches up to 17.5 W·m-2 under a 100-fold KCl gradient at neutral pH and room temperature, which is as high as by 38% compared to that of the pristine membrane. The membrane design strategy employing the nanoporous two-dimensional sheets provides a promising approach for ion exchange, osmotic energy extraction, and other nanofluidic applications.

Lattice Orientation Heredity in the Transformation of 2D Epitaxial Films

The ability to control lattice orientation is often an essential requirement in the growth of both 2D van der Waals (vdW) layered and nonlayered thin films. Here, a unique and universal phenomenon termed "lattice orientation heredity" (LOH) is reported. LOH enables product films (including 2D-layered materials) to inherit the lattice orientation from reactant films in a chemical conversion process, excluding the requirement on the substrate lattice order. The process universality is demonstrated by investigating the lattice transformations in the carbonization, nitridation, and sulfurization of epitaxial MoO₂ , ZnO, and In₂ O₃ thin films. Their resultant compounds all inherit the mono-oriented crystal feature from their precursor oxides, including 2D vdW-layered semiconductors (e.g., MoS₂ ), metallic films (e.g., MXene-like Mo₂ C and MoN), wide-bandgap semiconductors (e.g., hexagonal ZnS), and ferroelectric semiconductors (e.g., In₂ S₃ ). Using LOH-grown MoN as a seeding layer, mono-oriented GaN is achieved on an amorphous quartz substrate. The LOH process presents a universal strategy capable of growing epitaxial thin films (including 2D vdW-layered materials) not only on single-crystalline but also on noncrystalline substrates.
