CIRSE Clinical Practice Manual

Background

Interventional radiology (IR) has come a long way to a nowadays UEMS-CESMA endorsed clinical specialty. Over the last decades IR became an essential part of modern medicine, delivering minimally invasive patient-focused care.

Purpose

To provide principles for delivering high quality of care in IR.

Methods

Systematic description of clinical skills, principles of practice, organizational standards and infrastructure needed for the provision of professional IR services.

Results

There are IR procedures for almost all body parts and organs, covering a broad range of medical conditions. In many cases IR procedures are the mainstay of therapy, e.g. in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. In parallel the specialty moved from the delivery of a procedure towards taking care for a patient’s condition with the interventional radiologists taking ultimate responsibility for the patient’s outcomes.

Conclusions

The evolution from a technical specialty to a clinical specialty goes along with changing demands on how clinical care in IR is provided. The CIRSE Clinical Practice Manual provides interventional radiologist with a starting point for developing his or her IR practice as a clinician.

The Provision of Interventional Radiology Services in Europe: CIRSE Recommendations

Interventional Radiology (IR) is an essential part of modern medicine, delivering minimally invasive patient-focused care, which has been proven to be safe and effective in both elective and emergency settings. The aim of this document is to outline the core requirements and standards for the provision of Interventional Radiological services, including training, certification, manpower, and accreditation. The ultimate challenge will be the adoption of these recommendations by different countries and health economies around the world, in turn ensuring equal access to IR treatments for all patients, the appropriate distribution of resources for IR service provision as well as the continued development of safe and high-quality IR services in Europe and beyond.

Perirenal hemorrhage secondary to interventional radiology operation against head and neck vessels: two cases report and review of the literature

Due to the hidden hemorrhage and a lack of specificity in its manifestations, perirenal hemorrhage as a complication of interventional radiology procedures is not always diagnosed in a timely manner; furthermore, the cause of hemorrhage is often misidentified or uncertain. In this report, two cases of elderly male patients who each had a perirenal hemorrhage on the same side after an interventional radiology operation against head and neck vessels by the same operator on the same day are described. This study demonstrated that the perirenal hemorrhages in both patients were related to the interventional radiology operations, providing a reminder that operating gently and always keeping the guide wire in sight during the insertion are critical for reducing the incidence rate of perirenal hemorrhage.
