Abstract
![]()
In this work, we
employed broad-band dielectric spectroscopy to
determine the solubility limits of nimesulide in the Kollidon VA64
matrix at ambient and elevated pressure conditions. Our studies confirmed
that the solubility of the drug in the polymer matrix decreases with
increasing pressure, and molecular dynamics controls the process of
recrystallization of the excess of amorphous nimesulide from the supersaturated
drug–polymer solution. More precisely, recrystallization initiated
at a certain structural relaxation time of the sample stops when a
molecular mobility different from the initial one is reached, regardless
of the temperature and pressure conditions. Finally, based on the
presented results, one can conclude that by transposing vertically
the results obtained at elevated pressures, one can obtain the solubility
limit values corresponding to low temperatures. This approach was
validated by the comparison of the experimentally determined points
with the theoretically obtained values based on the Flory–Huggins
theory.

Abstract
A series of five alcohols (3-methyl-2-butanol, 1-cyclopropylethanol, 1-cyclopentylethanol, 1-cyclohexylethanol, and 1-phenylethanol) was used to study the impact of the size of steric hindrance and its aromaticity on self-assembling phenomena in the liquid phase. In this Letter, we have explicitly shown that the phenyl ring exerts a much stronger effect on the self-organization of molecules via the O-H···O scheme than any other type of steric hindrance, leading to a significant decline in the size and concentration of the H-bonded clusters. Given the combination of calorimetric, dielectric, infrared, and diffraction studies, this phenomenon was ascribed to its additional proton-acceptor function for the competitive intermolecular O-H···π interactions. The consequence of this is a different packing of molecules on the short- and medium-range scale.

Abstract
The ability to control crystallization is of central importance to many technologies and pharmaceutical materials. Electric fields have been shown to impact crystallization, but little is known about the mechanism of such effects. Here we report on our observations of how the frequency of an external electric (ac) field changes the crystallization rate and the partitioning into distinct polymorphs of vinylethylene carbonate. We find that the field effects are pronounced only for frequencies below a certain threshold, which is orders of magnitude below that characterizing molecular orientation but consistent with the reorientation of polar crystal nuclei of radius r < 3 nm. We conclude that the electric field opens an additional nucleation pathway by lowering the free-energy barrier to form a polymorph that melts at a temperature ∼20 K below that of the ordinary crystal. This lower melting polymorph is not obtained at zero electrical field.

Abstract
Frustration of crystallisation by locally favoured structures is critically important in linking the phenomena of supercooling, glass formation, and liquid-liquid transitions. Here we show that the putative liquid-liquid transition in n-butanol is in fact caused by geometric frustration associated with an isotropic to rippled lamellar liquid-crystal transition. Liquid-crystal phases are generally regarded as being “in between” the liquid and the crystalline state. In contrast, the liquid-crystal phase in supercooled n-butanol is found to inhibit transformation to the crystal. The observed frustrated phase is a template for similar ordering in other liquids and likely to play an important role in supercooling and liquid-liquid transitions in many other molecular liquids.
