Measurement of Pulsating Flow Using a Self-Attachable Flexible Strain Sensor Based on Adhesive PDMS and CNT

Accurate monitoring is needed for pulsating flow in many healthcare and bio applications. Specifically, real-time monitoring of pulsating blood flow provides rich information regarding a patient’s health conditions. This paper proposes a flexible strain sensor capable of detecting the pulsating fluid flow by directly measuring the circumferential strain induced by a rapid change in the flow rate. The thin and flexible strain sensor consists of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a Triton-X treatment to enhance the adhesive property and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) as the piezoresistive sensing layer. MWCNT integration implements a simple spray-coating method. The adhesive PDMS/CNT strain sensor exhibits a highly adhesive nature and can be attached to a silicone tube’s curved surface. By analyzing the theoretical modeling based on fluid energy equation and solid mechanics, strains induced on the soft tube by the change in flow rate, viscosity, and fluid density can be predicted. We performed the flow rate measurement at varying fluid-flow rates and liquid viscosities, and the results match our prediction. The sensitivity and limit of detection of the presented strain sensor are about 0.55 %min/L and 0.4 L/min, respectively. Both the calculation and experiment confirm that the sensor resistance is most sensitive to the fluid-flow rate, thus, enabling the accurate tracking of pulsating fluids’ flow rate, regardless of the viscosity or density.

Evaluation of Human Ear Anatomy and Functionality by Axiomatic Design

The design of the human ear is one of nature's engineering marvels. This paper examines the merit of ear design using axiomatic design principles. The ear is the organ of both hearing and balance. A sensitive ear can hear frequencies ranging from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The vestibular apparatus of the inner ear is responsible for the static and dynamic equilibrium of the human body. The ear is divided into the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear, which play their respective functional roles in transforming sound energy into nerve impulses interpreted in the brain. The human ear has many modules, such as the pinna, auditory canal, eardrum, ossicles, eustachian tube, cochlea, semicircular canals, cochlear nerve, and vestibular nerve. Each of these modules has several subparts. This paper tabulates and maps the functional requirements (FRs) of these modules onto design parameters (DPs) that nature has already chosen. The "independence axiom" of the axiomatic design methodology is applied to analyze couplings and to evaluate if human ear design is a good design (i.e., uncoupled design) or a bad design (i.e., coupled design). The analysis revealed that the human ear is a perfect design because it is an uncoupled structure. It is not only a perfect design but also a low-cost design. The materials that are used to build the ear atom-by-atom are chiefly carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, calcium, and nitrogen. The material cost is very negligible, which amounts to only a few of dollars. After a person has deceased, materials in the human system are upcycled by nature. We consider space requirements, materials cost, and upcyclability as "constraints" in the axiomatic design. In terms of performance, the human ear design is very impressive and serves as an inspiration for designing products in industrial environments.

Configuration optimization of bionic piezoelectric hair sensor for acoustic/tactile detection

Specialized sensory hairs are important biological sensors for arthropods to detect and recognize environmental conditions including acoustic, pressure and airflow signals. However, the present design methodology of such biomimic micro devices are mainly depending on shape mimicking, which greatly restricts their performance. In this paper, a novel genetic algorithm based optimization model for design of piezoelectric functional hair is developed for improving its acoustic pressure or tactile sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism of axially polarized piezoelectric hair is explored and the main influencing factors on sensitivity including hair configuration and axial strain distribution are determined. Then, a series of optimized hair configurations are obtained in a specific frequency band from 1 Hz to 500 Hz, whose average sensitivity of 2.21 × 10^-3 V Pa^-1 is 10 times greater than that of the straight hair of 2.15 × 10^-4 V Pa^-1 with the same size. For tactile load detection, the output voltage of the optimized hair is about 1.5 times as much as that of the straight hair. The obtained hairs are similar with the spider's trichobothria and tactile hair, which presents an explanation of biological hairs sensitive to dynamic and static loads.
