Abstract
Some recent papers by P. Lush and colleagues have argued that the rubber hand illusion (RHI), where participants can feel a rubber hand as their own under appropriate multisensory stimulation, may be caused mainly by hypnotic suggestibility and expectations (demand characteristics). These papers rely primarily on a study with 353 participants who took part in a RHI experiment carried out in a classical way with brush stroking. Participants experienced a synchronous condition where the rubber hand was seen to be touched in synchrony with touch felt on their corresponding hidden real hand, or the touches were applied asynchronously as a control. Each participant had a related measure of their hypnotisability on a scale known as the Sussex-Waterloo Scale of Hypnotisability (SWASH). The authors found a correlation between the questionnaire ratings of the RHI in the synchronous condition and the SWASH score. From this, they concluded that the RHI is largely driven by suggestibility and further proposed that suggestibility and expectations may even entirely explain the RHI. Here we examine their claims in a series of extensive new analyses of their data. We find that at every level of SWASH, the synchronous stimulation results in greater levels of the illusion than the asynchronous condition; moreover, proprioceptive drift is greater in the synchronous case at every level of SWASH. Thus, while the level of hypnotisability does modestly influence the subjective reports (higher SWASH is associated with somewhat higher illusion ratings), the major difference between the synchronous and asynchronous stimulation is always present. Furthermore, by including in the model the participants' expectancy ratings of how strongly they initially believed they would experience the RHI in the two conditions, we show that expectations had a very small effect on the illusion ratings; model comparisons further demonstrate that the multisensory condition is two-to-three-times as dominant as the other factors, with hypnotisability contributing modestly and expectations negligibly. Thus, although the results indicate that trait suggestibility may modulate the RHI, presumably through intersubject variations in top-down factors, the findings also suggest that the primary explanation for the RHI is as a multisensory bodily illusion.

Abstract
Three different innovative mathematical models were established to assess the volumetric nitrogen conversion rates of a lab-scale ANAMMOX upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor. Despite the vast technological and economical advantages of ANAMMOX, major challenges in process implementation call for mathematic simulations of the process, optimization of operating conditions, and kinetic/statistical analysis of the entire process. In this study, all developed mathematical models implemented via BioWin®, were calibrated and validated, with adequate representations of a bench-scale micro-granular ANAMMOX process, to understand the potential setbacks of ANAMMOX process start-up and stabilization. Fundamental calculations of the kinetic and stoichiometric constants were integrated in the BioWin® software, and the adjusted parameters based on experimental analysis were applied for the assessments. Based on the results from the statistical approach, one of the models (Model III) exhibited a precise prognosis of the effluent data for the entire operational phases with a mean relative error (MRE) of approximately 1.96, 4.36 and 2.54% for nitrogen removal efficiency, removal rate and loading rate, respectively. Evaluating alkalinity and pH during the operation, led to identifying an acceptable fit between the experiment and Model III results, with a MRE of -7.19 and -0.35%, correspondingly. This study confirms the reliability of ANAMMOX-based process modeling and high predictive ability with BioWin®. The presented simulation constants and modeling outline, can be further employed in full-scale applications design and development.

Abstract
Today, mobile laser scanning and oblique photogrammetry are two standard urban remote sensing acquisition methods, and the cross-source point-cloud data obtained using these methods have significant differences and complementarity. Accurate co-registration can make up for the limitations of a single data source, but many existing registration methods face critical challenges. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a systematic incremental registration method that can successfully register MLS and photogrammetric point clouds in the presence of a large number of missing data, large variations in point density, and scale differences. The robustness of this method is due to its elimination of noise in the extracted linear features and its 2D incremental registration strategy. There are three main contributions of our work: (1) the development of an end-to-end automatic cross-source point-cloud registration method; (2) a way to effectively extract the linear feature and restore the scale; and (3) an incremental registration strategy that simplifies the complex registration process. The experimental results show that this method can successfully achieve cross-source data registration, while other methods have difficulty obtaining satisfactory registration results efficiently. Moreover, this method can be extended to more point-cloud sources.

Abstract
Intervertebral disc degeneration might be amenable to stem cell therapy, but the required cells are scarce. Here, we report the development of a protocol for directed in vitro differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into notochord-like and nucleus pulposus (NP)-like cells of the disc. The first step combines enhancement of ACTIVIN/NODAL and WNT and inhibition of BMP pathways. By day 5 of differentiation, hPSC-derived cells express notochordal cell characteristic genes. After activating the TGF-β pathway for an additional 15 days, qPCR, immunostaining, and transcriptome data show that a wide array of NP markers are expressed. Transcriptomically, the in vitro-derived cells become more like in vivo adolescent human NP cells, driven by a set of influential genes enriched with motifs bound by BRACHYURY and FOXA2, consistent with an NP cell-like identity. Transplantation of these NP-like cells attenuates fibrotic changes in a rat disc injury model of disc degeneration.

Abstract
Among various methods for measuring the plasma volume (PV), the indocyanine green (ICG) dilution technique is a relatively less invasive method. However, the ICG method is rather cumbersome because 10 blood samples need to be obtained within a short time after ICG administration. Thus, reducing the frequency of blood sampling while maintaining the accuracy would facilitate plasma volume measurement in clinical situations. We here developed a modified method to measure plasma volume using 2260 ICG plasma concentration data from 115 surgical patients. The mean relative error (MRE) and the percentage of cases with relative error (RE) greater than 5% in total (PRE) were used to quantify the difference between plasma volumes obtained by the original and modified methods. RE was determined as follows. RE(%) = (PV obtained by original method (PVoriginal)-PV obtained by modified method (PVmodified))/PVoriginal × 100. PVmodified was assumed to be equal to PVoriginal when the RE was < 5%. When the number of samples selected for the plasma volume estimation was 4 or less, the PRE was mostly 10% or more. Five out of the 10 blood samples (order: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 10th) showed similar accuracies with the plasma volume obtained by the original method (original: 2.72 ± 0.64 l, modified: 2.72 ± 0.65 l). This modified method may be able to aptly replace the original method and lead to a wider clinical application of the ICG dilution technique. Further validation is needed to determine if the results of this study may be applied in other populations.
