Beryllium solubility in occupational airborne particles: Sequential extraction procedure and workplace application

Beryllium characterization in soils by selective extraction

In the present work, an analytical method has been developed for the determination of the amount of man-made beryllium metal and/or beryllium compounds in soil in addition to the amount of native beryllium that is present. The method is based on the premise that if high-fired beryllium oxide can be extracted efficiently, then beryllium metal and acid-soluble beryllium salts would also be extracted efficiently. The proposed method involves the addition of 9 mL of an aqueous solution of 5% (wt/vol) ammonium bifluoride (ABF) to a 10-mL tube with 250 mg of dried, sieved soil. The tube is placed in a convection oven at 70 ᵒC and is mechanically rocked for 60 min to mix the sample while it is being heated. Beryllium oxide, beryllium metal and beryllium salts would include virtually all of the anthropogenic (man-made) beryllium compounds that might contaminate soil. Compounds that may be naturally present in soil, such as beryllium silicates and beryllium aluminosilicates, are not extracted efficiently by ABF solution under these conditions. As a second step after the initial extraction of the sample of soil with ABF solution, the soil is completely dissolved in a mixture of strong acids and that acid solution is then analyzed to determine the residual beryllium. The ratio of the extractable to residual beryllium in the same aliquot of native soil can be measured for a soil type in a local region and then used to calculate the amount of anthropogenic beryllium in soil. Therefore, the method may have application in the measurement of beryllium-contaminated soil at sites where beryllium oxide, beryllium metal and/or beryllium salts may have been used.

Mobility and bioaccessibility of risk elements in the area affected by the long-term opencast coal mining

The potential environmental hazards of risk elements in the area affected by the opencast coal mine and/or coal combustion for plants and animals was assessed by using a suite of laboratory bioaccessibility tests. The chosen sampling area was in the vicinity of the largest coal mine spoil in the Sokolov coal basin (Czech Republic). For an estimation of the oral bioaccessibility of the risk elements in soils, the physiologically based extraction tests were applied. Among the available methods for estimating the pulmonary bioaccessibility of elements, the Gamble's and Hatch's tests were chosen. The results showed elevated pseudo-total soil contents of As, Be, Cd, Cu, Pb, V, and Zn. Among these elements, only Cd showed substantial bioaccessibility for plants, as documented by the high Risk Assessment Code, reaching up to 47%, and the highest plant-availability, where the maximum Bioaccumulation Factor in plants reached up to 4.5. The simulated body fluids showed the highest bioaccessibility of Cd, but also substantial bioaccessible pools of As and Be, the elements frequently found at the brown coal mining and processing areas. For better understanding of the risk element bioaccessibility under the specific conditions, the released element pools should be related to the particular soil physicochemical parameters.

Occupational exposure to beryllium in French industries

Beryllium (Be) is a metal mainly used in the form of alloys, with copper (Cu) and aluminium (Al) in the metal industry. Be is an extremely toxic element which must be handled under strictly controlled conditions to avoid health hazards to workers. Exposure to Be can be responsible for Chronic Beryllium Disease, a pulmonary disease preceded by sensitization to the element, and for lung cancer. The goals of the current study were to investigate Be exposure in France, to determine the airborne Be occupational exposure levels, the associated impregnation of employees through their urinary Be levels and the factors that might affect them, and finally to study a possible relation between biomonitoring and airborne data. Seventy-five volunteer subjects were thus atmospherically and biologically monitored in five French companies involved in Cu or Al casting, Al smelting, CuBe machining or AlBe general mechanical engineering. Airborne exposure was quite low with only 2% of measurements above the current French Occupational Exposure Limit (2 µg/m³); the population potentially most exposed was foundry workers. Impregnation with Be was also low with only 10% of quantified urinary Be measurements above the current German BAR value (0.05 µg/L). Using a Bayesian statistical modelling approach, the mean subject-specific urinary excretion of Be was found to increase significantly with the mean subject-specific exposure to airborne Be. From this relationship, and based on the current French OEL-8 hr, a Biological Limit Value of 0.08 µg/L (= 0.06 µg/g creatinine) could be proposed.
