Low temperature magnetothermoelectric effect and magnetoresistance in Te vapor annealed Bi2Te3

Magnetic Transition to Antiferromagnetic Phase in Gadolinium Substituted Topological Insulator Bi2Te3

There are many interests to achieve long-range magnetic order in topological insulators of Bi₂Se₃ or Bi₂Te₃ by doping magnetic transition metals such as Fe and Mn. The transition metals act as not only magnetic dopants but also electric dopants because they are usually divalent. However, if the doping elements are rare-earth metals such as Gd, which are trivalent, only magnetic moments can be introduced. We fabricated single crystals of Bi_2-xGd_xTe₃ (0 ≤ × ≤ 0.2), in which we observed magnetic phase change from paramagnetic (PM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase by increasing x. This PM-to-AFM phase transition agrees with the density functional theory calculations showing a weak and short-ranged Gd-Gd AFM coupling via the intervening Te ions. The critical point corresponding to the magnetic phase transition is x = 0.09, where large linear magnetoresistance and highly anisotropic Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed. These results are discussed with two-dimensional properties of topological surface state electrons.

High temperature superconducting FeSe films on SrTiO3 substrates

Interface enhanced superconductivity at two dimensional limit has become one of most intriguing research directions in condensed matter physics. Here, we report the superconducting properties of ultra-thin FeSe films with the thickness of one unit cell (1-UC) grown on conductive and insulating SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. For the 1-UC FeSe on conductive STO substrate (Nb-STO), the magnetization versus temperature (M-T) measurement shows a drop crossover around 85 K. For the FeSe films on insulating STO substrate, systematic transport measurements were carried out and the sheet resistance of FeSe films exhibits Arrhenius TAFF behavior with a crossover from a single-vortex pinning region to a collective creep region. More intriguing, sign reversal of Hall resistance with temperature is observed, demonstrating a crossover from hole conduction to electron conduction above TC in 1-UC FeSe films.

Observation of huge surface hole mobility in the topological insulator Bi(0.91)Sb(0.09) (111)

We report the first direct measurement of transport properties of surface states in the topological insulator Bi(0.91)Sb(0.09) (111) from the weak-field Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We find that the holelike surface band displays an unexpectedly high mobility 23,000-85,000 cm(2)/V s, which is the highest mobility so far reported in bismuth-based topological insulators. This result provides the first quantitative assessment of the effect of alloy disorder on the mobility of surface states in topological insulators. We show that the 9% alloy disorder decreases the mobility of surface states by a factor of less than 2.3.

Room temperature giant and linear magnetoresistance in topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanosheets

Topological insulators, a new class of condensed matter having bulk insulating states and gapless metallic surface states, have demonstrated fascinating quantum effects. However, the potential practical applications of the topological insulators are still under exploration worldwide. We demonstrate that nanosheets of a Bi(2)Te(3) topological insulator several quintuple layers thick display giant and linear magnetoresistance. The giant and linear magnetoresistance achieved is as high as over 600% at room temperature, with a trend towards further increase at higher temperatures, as well as being weakly temperature-dependent and linear with the field, without any sign of saturation at measured fields up to 13 T. Furthermore, we observed a magnetic field induced gap below 10 K. The observation of giant and linear magnetoresistance paves the way for 3D topological insulators to be useful for practical applications in magnetoelectronic sensors such as disk reading heads, mechatronics, and other multifunctional electromagnetic applications.

Impurity effect on weak antilocalization in the topological insulator Bi2Te3

We study the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in topological insulator Bi(2)Te(3) thin films at low temperatures. The two-dimensional WAL effect associated with surface carriers is revealed in the tilted magnetic field dependence of magnetoconductance. Our data demonstrate that the observed WAL is robust against deposition of nonmagnetic Au impurities on the surface of the thin films, but it is quenched by the deposition of magnetic Fe impurities which destroy the π Berry phase of the topological surface states. The magnetoconductance data of a 5 nm Bi(2)Te(3) film suggests that a crossover from symplectic to unitary classes is observed with the deposition of Fe impurities.
