Characterization of spark plasma sintered Ag nanopowders

Iron oxide-based nanostructured ceramics with tailored magnetic and mechanical properties: development of mechanically robust, bulk superparamagnetic materials

Nanostructured iron-oxide based materials with tailored mechanical and magnetic behavior are produced in bulk form. By applying ultra-fast heating routines via spark plasma sintering (SPS) to supercrystalline pellets, materials with an enhanced combination of elastic modulus, hardness and saturation magnetization are achieved. Supercrystallinity - namely the arrangement of the constituent nanoparticles into periodic structures - is achieved through self-assembly of the organically-functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles. The optimization of the following SPS regime allows the control of organics' removal, necking, iron oxide phase transformations and nano-grain size retention, and thus the fine-tuning of both mechanical properties and magnetic response, up until the production of bulk mm-size superparamagnetic materials.

Electric Current-Assisted Joining of Copper Plates Using Silver Formed by In-Situ Decomposition of Ag2C2O4

Pulsed electric current can be used for the fast sintering of powders as well as joining of macroobjects. In this work, we brazed copper plates using a silver layer that was formed in situ by the decomposition of a silver oxalate Ag2C2O4 powder placed between the plates. Joining was conducted in the chamber of a Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) facility with and without a graphite die. In the die-assisted tooling configuration, indirect heating of the assembly from the graphite die carrying electric current occurred until the brazing layer transformed into metallic silver. The passage of electric current through a Cu/Ag2C2O4/Cu stack placed between the electrodes without a die was possible because of the formation of Cu/Cu contacts in the areas free from the Ag2C2O4 particles. Joints that were formed in the die-assisted experiments showed a slightly higher shear strength (45 MPa) in comparison with joints formed without a die (41 MPa). The shear strength of the reference sample (obtained without a die), a stack of copper plates joined without any brazing layer, was only 31 MPa, which indicates a key role of the silver in producing strong bonding between the plates. This study shows that both die-assisted tooling configurations and those without a die can be used for the SPS brazing of materials by the oxalate-derived silver interlayer.

Micro-mechanics of nanostructured carbon/shape memory polymer hybrid thin film

This paper investigates the mechanics of hybrid shape memory polymer polystrene (PS) based nanocomposites with skeletal structures of CNFs/MWCNTs formed inside. Experimental results showed an increase of glass transition temperature (Tg) with CNF/MWCNT concentrations instead of a decrease of Tg in nanocomposites filled by spherical particles, and an increase in mechanical properties on both macro- and μm-scales. Compared with CNFs, MWCNTs showed a better mechanical enhancement for PS nanocomposites due to their uniform distribution in the nanocomposites. In nanoindentation tests using the Berkovich tips, indentation size effects and pile-up effects appeared obviously for the nanocomposites, but not for pure PS. Experimental results revealed the enhancement mechanisms of CNFs/MWCNTs related to the secondary structures formed by nanofillers, including two aspects, i.e., filler-polymer interfacial connections and geometrical factors of nanofillers. The filler-polymer interfacial connections were strongly dependent on temperature, thus leading to the opposite changing trend of loss tangent with nanofiller concentrations, respectively, at low and high temperature. The geometrical factors of nanofillers were related to testing scales, further leading to the appearance of pile-up effects for nanocomposites in the nanoindentation tests, in which the size of indents was close to the size of the nanofiller skeleton.
