Facile and controllable synthesis of monodisperse gold nanoparticle bipyramid for electrochemical dopamine sensor

We demonstrated potential features of gold nanoparticle bipyramid (AuNB) for an electrochemical biosensor. The facile synthesis method and controllable shape and size of the AuNB are achieved through the optimization of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) surfactant over citric acid (CA) ratio determining the control of typically spherical Au seed size and its transition into a penta-twinned crystal structure. We observe that the optimized ratio of CTAC and CA facilitates flocculation control in which Au seeds with size as tiny as ∼14.8 nm could be attained and finally transformed into AuNB structures with an average length of ∼55 nm with high reproducibility. To improve the electrochemical sensing performance of a screen-printed carbon electrode, surface modification with AuNB via distinctive linking procedures effectively enhanced the electroactive surface area by 40%. Carried out for the detection of dopamine, a neurotransmitter frequently linked to the risk of Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's diseases, the AuNB decorated-carbon electrode shows outstanding electrocatalytic activity that improves sensing performance, including high sensitivity, low detection limit, wide dynamic range, high selectivity against different analytes, such as ascorbic acid, uric acid and urea, and excellent reproducibility.

On the origin of controlled anisotropic growth of monodisperse gold nanobipyramids

We elucidate the crucial role of the cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant in the anisotropic growth mechanism of gold nano-bipyramids, nano-objects with remarkable optical properties and high tunability. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations predict different surface coverages of the CTAB (positively charged) heads and their (bromide) counterions as function of the gold exposed surfaces. High concentration of CTAB surfactant promotes formation of gold nanograins in solution that work as precursors for the smooth anisotropic growth of more elongated nano-bipyramidal objects. Nanobipyramids feature higher index facets with respect to nanorods, allowing higher CTAB coverages that stabilize their formation and leading to narrower inter-micelles channels that smooth down their anisotropic growth. Absorption spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the formation of nanograins and demonstrated the importance of surfactant concentration on driving the growth towards nano-bipyramids rather than nanorods. The outcome explains the formation of the monodisperse bipyramidal nano-objects, the origin of their controlled shapes and sizes along with their remarkable stability.

Plasmonic photocatalysis and SERS sensing using ellipsometrically modeled Ag nanoisland substrates

Silver nanoislands are key platforms for plasmonic photocatalysis, SERS sensing and optical metamaterials due to their localized surface plasmon resonances. The low intrinsic loss in Ag enables high local electromagnetic field enhancements. Solution-based fabrication techniques, while cheap, result in highly non-reproducible plasmonic substrates with wide sample-to-sample variability in geometry, optical resonances and Q-factors. Herein, we present a non-lithographic method of forming silver nanoislands based on sputter deposition of Ag films followed by elevated temperature annealing to induce spontaneous dewetting. The resulting plasmonic substrates show reproducible, well-defined LSPR resonances with high ensemble Q-factors whose optical properties could be modeled using spectroscopic ellipsometry to yield n and k values across the visible range. UV-Vis-NIR, and XRD analyses define the optical and crystallographic characteristics of the Ag nanoisland samples. FESEM was utilized to discern the geometry and architecture of the Ag nanoisland as well as their uniformity and monodispersity. Our vacuum deposited Ag nanoislands demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity for the transformation of 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT) and 4-aminothiophenol (PATP) into p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB).

Beyond the Concentration Limitation in the Synthesis of Nanobipyramids and Other Pentatwinned Gold Nanostructures

Gold nanoparticles offer unique optoelectronic properties relevant for a wide range of processes and products, in biology and medicine (therapeutic agents, diagnostic, drug delivery), as well as in electronics, photovoltaics, and catalysis. So far, various synthesis methods proposed have led to rather limited concentration and purity of the colloidal suspensions, severely hindering their use. Here, we present a simple and versatile procedure for the synthesis of gold pentatwinned nanostructures, including nanobipyramids based on a seed-mediated growth process that overcomes the concentration limitations of current methods by 2 orders of magnitude. Moreover, our novel process offers quantitative yields while easily allowing a fine control of the particles' shape, size (with a high monodispersity), and plasmonic properties. Finally, we demonstrate that our method can be easily upscaled to produce large amounts of nanostructures, up to the gram scale, with minimal waste and postprocessing, thus facilitating their use for further applications and industrial developments.

From gold nanobipyramids to nanojavelins for a precise tuning of the plasmon resonance to the infrared wavelengths: experimental and theoretical aspects

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles and in particular with shapes exhibiting tips are known to present an extremely strong localized electromagnetic field. This field is mostly located at the top of the tips and can be used in various optical applications. Moreover, as a consequence of their anisotropy, they present two plasmon resonance bands corresponding to the transverse and longitudinal resonance modes. Tuning the aspect ratio it becomes possible to display SPR bands near the near infrared region. This was particularly investigated in the case of nanorods and also for bipyramids. In this paper we report a high yield synthesis approach that allows one to precisely control the aspect ratio of bipyramids and to elongate the structure until they adopt a javelin-like aspect. We were able to prepare nano-javelins with surface plasmon resonances up to 1850 nm, opening important perspectives in terms of optical applications in the NIR and IR regions. The synthetic methods are fully reported and the optical properties were correlated with the theoretical approach, taking into consideration not only the aspect ratio but also the truncation of the nano-objects.

Size-controlled synthesis of gold bipyramids using an aqueous mixture of CTAC and salicylate anions as the soft template

One-dimensional (1D) gold (Au) bipyramids are successfully synthesized through a facile seed-mediated method using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), Au seed nanoparticles, Ag(+) ions, and ascorbic acid. The length and optical properties of the synthesized Au bipyramids are controlled with precision by varying the amount of salicylate anions (Sal(-)) added during the synthesis. The micelles formed from CTA(+)-Sal(-) mixtures in aqueous solutions act as effective templates for the size-controlled synthesis of 1D nanocrystals.

Chiral nanocrystals: plasmonic spectra and circular dichroism

The life is inherently chiral. Consequently, chirality plays a pivotal role in biochemistry and the evolution of life itself. Optical manifestation of chirality of biomolecules, so-called circular dichroism, is a remarkable but relatively weak effect appearing typically in the UV. In contrast to the biomolecules, plasmonic nanocrystals offer an interesting opportunity to create strong circular dichroism (CD) in the visible spectral range. Here we describe plasmonic properties of single chiral nanocrystals and focus on a new mechanism of optical chirality originating from a chiral shape of a nanocrystal. After careful examination, we found that this CD mechanism is induced by the mixing between different plasmon harmonics and is qualitatively different from the previously described dipolar CD effect in chiral assemblies of spherical nanoparticles. Chiral plasmonic nanocrystals studied here offer a new approach for the creation of nanomaterials with strong chiroptical responses in the visible spectral interval.

Synthesis, electron tomography and single-particle optical response of twisted gold nano-bipyramids

A great number of works focus their interest on the study of gold nanoparticle plasmonic properties. Among those, sharp nanostructures appear to exhibit the more interesting features for further developments. In this paper, a complete study on bipyramidal-like gold nanostructures is presented. The nano-objects are prepared in high yield using an original method. This chemical process enables a precise control of the shape and the size of the particles. The specific photophysical properties of gold bipyramids in suspension are ripened by recording the plasmonic response of single and isolated objects. Resulting extinction spectra are precisely correlated to their geometrical structure by mean of electron tomography at the single-particle level. The interplay between the geometrical structure and the optical properties of twisted gold bipyramids is further discussed on the basis of numerical calculations. The influence of several parameters is explored such as the structural aspect ratio or the tip truncation. In the case of an incident excitation polarized along the particle long axis, this study shows how the plasmon resonance position can be sensitive to these parameters and how it can then be efficiently tuned on a large wavelength range.
