A dynamic plasmonic manipulation technique assisted by phase modulation of an incident optical vortex beam

Multifunctional Plasmonic Grating Based on the Phase Modulation of Excitation Light

Multifunctional optical devices are desirable at all times due to their features of flexibility and high efficiency. Based on the principle that the phase of excitation light can be transferred to the generated surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), a plasmonic grating with three functions is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The Cherenkov SPPs wake or nondiffracting SPPs Bessel beam or focusing SPPs field can be correspondingly excited for the excitation light, which is modulated by a linear gradient phase or a symmetrical phase or a spherical phase, respectively. Moreover, the features of these functions such as the propagation direction of SPPs wake, the size and direction of the SPPs Bessel beam, and the position of SPPs focus can be dynamically manipulated. In consideration of the fact that no extra fabrication is required to obtain the different SPPs fields, the proposed approach can effectively reduce the cost in practical applications.

Selective excitation of localized surface plasmons by structured light

We investigated the selective excitation of localized surface plasmons by structured light. We derive selection rules using group theory and propose a fitting integral to quantify the contribution of the eigenmodes to the absorption spectra. Based on the result we investigate three nano oligomers of different symmetry (trimer, quadrumer, and hexamer) in detail using finite-difference time-domain simulations. We show that by controlling the incident light polarization and phase pattern we are able to control the absorption and scattering spectra. Additionally, we demonstrate that the fitting between the incident light and the oligomer modes may favor a number of modes to oscillate. Dark modes produce strong changes in the absorption spectrum and bright modes in the scattering spectrum. The experimental precision (axial shift error) may be on the same order as the oligomer diameter making the orbital angular momentum selection rules robust enough for experimental observation.

Dynamical Manipulation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons

As the fundamental and promising branch of nanophotonics, surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) with the ability of manipulating the electromagnetic field on the subwavelength scale are of interest to a wide spectrum of scientists. Composed of metallic or dielectric structures whose shape and position are carefully engineered on the metal surface, traditional SPP devices are generally static and lack tunability. Dynamical manipulation of SPP is meaningful in both fundamental research and practical applications. In this article, the achievements in dynamical SPP excitation, SPP focusing, SPP vortex, and SPP nondiffracting beams are presented. The mechanisms of dynamical SPP devices are revealed and compared, and future perspectives are discussed.

Holographic Plasmonic Nanotweezers for Dynamic Trapping and Manipulation

We demonstrate dynamic trapping and manipulation of nanoparticles with plasmonic holograms. By tailoring the illumination pattern of an incident light beam with a computer-controlled spatial light modulator, constructive and destructive interference of plasmon waves create a focused hotspot that can be moved across a surface. Specifically, a computer-generated hologram illuminating the perimeter of a silver Bull's Eye nanostructure generates surface plasmons that propagate toward the center. Shifting the phase of the plasmon waves as a function of space gives complete control over the location of the focus. We show that 200 nm diameter nanoparticles trapped in this focus can be moved in arbitrary patterns. This allows, for example, circular motion with linearly polarized light. These results show the versatility of holographically generated surface plasmon waves for advanced trapping and manipulation of nanoparticles.

Retrieving orbital angular momentum distribution of light with plasmonic vortex lens

We utilize a plasmonic vortex lens (PVL) to retrieve the orbital angular momentum (OAM) distribution of light. The OAM modes are coupled to the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the form of various Bessel functions respectively. By decomposing the interference pattern of SPPs into these Bessel functions, we can retrieve the relative amplitude and the relative phase of input OAM modes simultaneously. Our scheme shows advantage in integration and can measure hybrid OAM states by one measurement.

A phased antenna array for surface plasmons

Surface plasmon polaritons are electromagnetic waves that propagate tightly bound to metal surfaces. The concentration of the electromagnetic field at the surface as well as the short wavelength of surface plasmons enable sensitive detection methods and miniaturization of optics. We present an optical frequency plasmonic analog to the phased antenna array as it is well known in radar technology and radio astronomy. Individual holes in a thick gold film act as dipolar emitters of surface plasmon polaritons whose phase is controlled individually using a digital spatial light modulator. We show experimentally, using a phase sensitive near-field microscope, that this optical system allows accurate directional emission of surface waves. This compact and flexible method allows for dynamically shaping the propagation of plasmons and holds promise for nanophotonic applications employing propagating surface plasmons.

Anomalous Surface Wave Launching by Handedness Phase Control

Anomalous launch of a surface wave with different handedness phase control is achieved in a terahertz metasurface based on phase discontinuities. The polarity of the phase profile of the surface waves is found to be strongly correlated to the polarization handedness, promising polarization-controllable wavefront shaping, polarization sensing, and environmental refractive-index sensing.

Dynamically generating a large-area confined optical field with subwavelength feature size

By using a prism of high refractive index, free-space cylindrical vector beams can be selectively converted into confined optical fields with large area, such as surface plasmon polaritons or waveguide modes, whose interference will produce optical features at the nanometer scale. Due to the polarization sensitivity of these modes, the macroscopic distribution of the confined field can be dynamically manipulated through an electronically driven liquid crystal. Based on these phenomena, a promising maskless interference nanolithography is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.

Dynamic cosine-Gauss plasmonic beam through phase control

We carry out an approach to dynamic manipulation of a nondiffracting cosine-Gauss plasmonic beam (CGPB) illuminated with an incident phase modulation within nanostructures by a spatial light modulator (SLM). By changing the hologram addressed on the SLM, dynamic control on the lobe width and the propagating direction of the CGPB is experimentally verified. Finally, we demonstrate an application example of this dynamic CGPB in routing optical signals to multichannel subwavelength wave guides through numerical simulation.
